- As part of Guitar Center's Master Class artist program, 10 winners around the country were hand-chosen by Synyster Gates for a unique experience to sit in and experience a private master class with Synyster Gates from Avenged Sevenfold at Guitar Center, Hollywood.
I find it hilarious when metalheads start criticising this guy. I mean, I study guitar and I like to play stuff from Dream Theater, Angra, Guthrie Govan, and those are very complex, yes, but now I got myself into an A7x cover gig and i'm strugling with some synyster solos. This guy is a monster, very sophisticated as guitar player and musician.
+FCValle -me too dude, i mean, i compose my own music, and then cover some Obscura, Scar Symmetry, Megadeth, Adagio, Arch Enemy, etc. etc. .... i tought Syn was sloppy, but damn, some of his solos are really beautifull and complex!
+FCValle And not to mention he even had trouble with one of his own solos that he wrote for the Avenged Sevenfold record because it was all just picked. Almost Easy i'm pretty sure. but he even stated in a behind the scenes video too.
first half of almost easy solo section is a major pain in the ass.
+Thunder Healer the song was Scream. Solo is all picked triplets ^_^
+Charles Muenzner Forté Same dude,I thought it would be easy for me to play synyster solos since i can play some complex stuff from different guitarists,Gotta say Synyster kicked my ass lol
Love or Hate A7X, you have to respect this man as a guitar player. Especially when it comes to his influence on the younger generation of players. I would of loved to have been there!
Completely agree. Whether you think he's the best guitarist out there or not, the guy has talent, a unique style, and he's accessible. Sure there are more technical players out there, and faster ones, but Gates knows his place and he works it. He's like the Slash of our generation of players. Talented, accessible, and influential. He also knows exactly what he's doing. His theory is sound, and he might introduce a lot of his fans to things they might've not found, like gypsy jazz. Avenged gets a bad rep, but they really shouldn't.
Absolutely. The whole band are incredibly solid musicians, and it shows live; they're one of, if not the best live rock act of today
I used to love A7X. Don't listen to them much these days but they're the reason I've continued to play, especially Synyster. Because of that, I consider him to be my biggest influence even if it isn't musically.
nickpro11 And now even shit core bands are beating them in Cage Matches WTF!
most cage matches and music awards now are popularity contests; just look at the AP and Kerrang! awards, the nominees are far from being the best in their categories, it's ridiculous
Yeah, when I'm not so busy touring with Avenged Sevenfold I'll take some time to practice, thanks for the tip Brian.
+TheSamuraiApocalypse I'm finishing the tour right now .
TheSamuraiApocalypse i
I think he’s saying do more than you have to lol don’t just learn some songs you wanna play and play them over and over, try new and weird stuff
To everyone who's about to say he's just a mindless shredder, listen to the ballads he has written with A7X. Hell, even listening to this you can hear the melody and SOUL of what he's playing so clearly. Synyster Gates is one of the rare shredders who can actually play incredibly fast while still retaining the soul of the jazz and blues work he knows so well. People keep ripping on Avenged Sevenfold, and not to be a fanboy, but its just a bunch of trolls. They're not bound by the laws of your stupid genres. They write what they write because that's who they are. Not everyone is as bone crushing as Ola Englund's writing every day of the week, not even Ola Englund. They're a band that are open to whatever they FEEL they want to express. That is why they're an excellent group of musicians. They don't set boundaries for themselves, neither should you.
He puts a lot of soul in his solos and work
Koedix Ola england actually commented on Syn's gypsy jazz video AND said "this is awesome!"
Those same people that criticize Synyster Gates for mindless shredding are the same people that praise Dimebag Darrel. Im not hating on him, I love pantera but he's a shredder.
One only needs to listen to the solos in The Stage. They are shredding at one moment, and slow and emotional at others.. the contrast makes the song one of the most beautiful metal ballads i've heard :)
Damn right!!
It really upsets me how underrated he is. He should already be known as one of the best guitarrists ever, despite if you like avenged or not, no one ever can deny he is a beast of a player
He did take cues from the best.
@@matthewboyer7401 so do we all, right? new generations expand on what is laid out. be it in sports, music, research.
yeah a friend of mine had to push me to pay attention to Gates, and i am glad he did, i was surprised to see someone who seemed so young at the time playing what i considered to be more mature and complicated styles musically than a lot of others.
And listening here i can hear a lot of influences, when he mentions Frank Gambale i hit the roof! everyone should check out Frank Gambale, he might just be the smartest guitar player ever....maybe
He is really good for sure, but one of the best ever? No way.
He is not underrated
His guitar says REV *wipes tear*
Daniel Romero its also in so far away
Daniel Romero *lay on ground, try not to cry, CRY A LOT*
Im a newbie whos REV?
Viel Gwapa his, and everyone in the bands best friend. Also the old drummer of the band. Who unfortunately passed away. His nickname was The Rev (there’s a longer version but I don’t feel like figuring out how to spell it xD) amazing and super talented drummer and amazing person.
Nathan Wolf jimmy (the revolution ) sullivan..
Synyster Gates needs a solo album without anyone else from A7x. He's that good at guitar. Like a Slash, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, John Mayer, etc.
with jim root!!
+Chrisataur fuck yea
he means he is good like eddie
Zach Harless he hates instrumentals
Zach Harless marty friedman
rev's name is engraved on his fretboard... rip man
he also has a tattoo of "Rev" on his chest
+Aaron Devoy inlay not engrave
+Steven Carlson I know ahah
+samsquantch14 ...I totally knew that bro... eh heh.. heh...
Aaron Devoy
lol i get it mixed up too...that is a sick inlay
Synyster Gates is a fucking Legend. He and A7X are huge inspirations to me.
Look into martin Rønning
@@frankcastle4715
A perfect mimic of Synyster Gates.
What about him
Synyster Gates is a damn legend!
I don't care what anyone says- For my money, Synyster Gates is the best in the biz right now. The guy is just one of those rare talents that comes along once in a generation and advances the field. Listen to him when he talks about his process. I love that he basically says, "I still love playing the guitar and I always will... I need my time off to stop being 'Synyster Gates', and go be Brian Davis again- just another student of music who enjoys listening to other genres for ideas on arrangements & melodies." The rock/metal genre is a field populated with guys who've just gotten burnt-out from playing their instruments all the time and rarely pick them up during their down time away from the recording studio or the stage. Not this guy though. He's a sincere, genuine student of the art form who has a curiosity for learning more and a passion for making it happen. He's never satisfied. He always wants to learn more and push new boundaries. You've just got to love that about him!
Amen
Amen
The best in the world.
I write comments like this all the time. That's exactly how I feel about him, and he's an inspiration. He is way underrated, and not like he's not getting any recognition cause he totally is, but he is better than so many metal guitarists today. Even Kirk Hammett from Metallica, he's not of the current generation, but I'd definitely say Brian is a much better guitarist. Kirk Hammetts just kinda burnt out. Brian beats out every metal guitarist that has been prominent only since the past 2 and a half decades by a landslide. It's a shame that we don't have nearly as many great guitarists as we used to. We're not seeing any new incredible guitarists emerge other than Brian. I say that because I feel like he still has a lot of years and albums ahead of him to really put a stamp in everyone's heads that he deserves all the recognition that every amazing and influential artist/guitarist receives.
+Evan Faraday lmao, no. Paul Gilbert, Buckethead, Malmsteen, Satch, Vai, Jeff Loomis, Guthrie Govan, Tony Mcalpine, Alex Skolnick, John Petrucci are just some of the great players that are much, much better than Synyster all around and in pretty much every catagory, Hetfield for riffs. I can also name many more. Anyone who plays guitar would agree. Not to take anything away from him, but you should expand your horizons musically.
Greatest guitarist of our generation. Hall of famer. Guitar master. Bro I am impressed by the discipline this dude has mastered. 🤯
I got the "Fuck up all over the place." part down pretty good. HA!
yeah same.. my record was two chords!! beat that!
Perfectly describes my playing
Synester would make a badass high school music teacher
I like your attitude bro
i truly believe he is one of the best guitar minds in metal for the last 20 years. So much emotion in his guitar playing, you can FEEL what hes trying to put out. Its a no brainer every time. the MASTER GATES
just came back to this years later and i finally realize how syn gets better with every album. his masterclass wasnt even about what he does. it was about how he learns. he is telling people HOW to learn and be unique at the same time. with this thought process, everyone will go down a different path and sound different, BUT everyone will be better musicians.
i wish i was half as good as him lol
GuitarGeek ikr! my buddies always tell me im really good and im always like.. dude no i suck.. this is why i have thst attitude XD
GuitarGeek if you were half as good as him, you would be the second best guitarist in the world
lol true
That 8 finger tapping man.... sweet jeebus....
I'm tired of the "real" metal heads always giving Synyster Gates and the rest of a7x shit about not being metal. how the hell are these guys not metal? or that syn is nothing compared to other guitarist. gates is gonna be a fucking legend. The Rev is a drumming legend as well as synyster gates with guitar. I know if an asshole metal see's this comment he'll get pissed. but in some ways I find synyster to be better or at least on the level of dimebag darrell. they all just don't wanna admit it and they wanna get mad and call all of us avenged sevenfold fans scene and emo kids. I'm far from an emo or scene kid and Avenged sevenfold, the entire group is such a wonderful and very fucking talented metal band. they are my favorite band ever and always will be. I've been listening to them for years and years sense city of evil came out. I still love them
+Suh DUDE I did say at least on the level of dimebag darrell too. but hey this is just my opinion
don't worry man, people will never appreciate talent
TOTALLY WITH YOU IN EVERY WORD! Ivery also expressed that years back.. haha just don't take the heights of comparing dime lol.. BUUUT I know what you mean 😊 \m/ .. I guess with the comparison, it's just about dime being the upperclass man that anyone can't ever beat :)
I agree. I'd even go so far as to say that Dimebag wouldn't be half as hyped up as he is if he wasn't killed. Sue me.
Geoff Tighe dimebag is incredible. gates is sloppy man. any of his live guitar solos will demonstrate that. or even his pitiful attempt at the solo to walk
Always knew Syn was damn good but didn't know he could play such insane licks.
He should really consider a solo project
Guys got a college degree in music lol mad respect for him because he's actually a true musician 😎👌🏻
If you didn’t know he could play like this, have you ever listened to his music? His parts are nuts.
@@heavymetal_cutting_fabricationafterlife's solo is enough for me to skip learning his other solos. Ik that's a bad habit and I'm still fighting this kind of guitar practicing attitude.
Damn, Papa Gates must be beyond himself as a proud Father watching Brian do this along with everything else he has accomplished.🤙🏻🔥
His style and tone reminds me of like a 1980s shredder guitar player. Or I could totally see him playing like neo classical metal too.
His reminds me of Hank Shermann of Mercyful Fate
If the next album sounded something like that, I would be thoroughly impressed :D
X3nonEyez Would be great!
Funny enough the same style that influenced this is the same that inspired the guitar work in Hail to the King and some of the Deathbat game's soundtrack.
This guy is one of the best guitar players I have ever heard
I don't listen to A7X as much as I did years ago, but seems like this guy still has a special place in my heart being the reason I started learning to play the guitar 👍
Syn is the Beethoven of guitar. I could listen to him play all day, just amazing. So many different influential genres that show in his playing along with his passion. Cool dude and from Huntington Beach like I am. I would love it if he did a solo album in the future like John 5 just did.
After that he definitely needs his own album he could easily be the next slash or john Petrucci
On a scale from 0-100, with zero being utter shit and 100 being fucking insane, Slash is like a strong 25, and Petrucci is like a strong 90. Your statement makes no sense.
Libsoc Bruh I would put Slash higher than that, dude, come on. Slash should be at least at 75. He's perfectly capable of shredding and all that, he just choses a simpler route
Dave Grohl Slash plays modal pentatonics mostly, and really by accident. His technique is shit. He's really not a 75 dude.
***** What a fucking ridiculous statement. Where are your songs on youtube ya fucking idiot?? Several million albums sold, still arguably the most popular guitarist on the planet (whether you love him or hate him, he is)... and you, insignificant little no-one comes on here and say he's shit? If he's shit, you lemme know when you are touring buddy, 'coz I cant fucking WAIT to hear what you can produce. Arserag!!
+boberson33 he did so accidentally. He's admitted that. He literally just played licks over similar chord progressions. His use of modes was beginner level at best. That and "using a mode" and using a mode correctly are two different things. Really modes serve as a framework for actually anticipating chord changes and helping you better pick the proper chord tones to create specific emotions over certain chords. It's not just playing a C major scale over a Gmaj or G7 chord. Highlighting the sound of a mode or modal chord progression is so much more than that. Slash played an Em pentatonic box pattern over a G major chord progression most of the time. It created a bluesy sound so he went with it. I'm not knocking Slash as a musician, but he's not in the same league with petrucci by any means. Pretrucci does write shit that I don't find melodically appealing, but he's more than capable of doing so. I mean listen to the solo from his first instructional video, or the solos from their early albums...or the Under A Glass Moon solo. His playing style has changed over the years. I don't enjoy his stuff much any more. Slash is good for beginners to learn, but as your ear evolves, Slash becomes boring and more than predictable. BB King, a "blues" player, was less predictable than slash in his later years.
He's the best out there right now, in my opinion.
and he just keeps getting better. Gates is a master at setting a mood with his playing. Crazy melodic with an edge.
Syn Gates is honestly the reason why I’m getting into guitar, now! The Scream solo just sounds like it’s brutal and I would love to learn it someday!
Incredible. Amazing guitar musician. Probably the most influential of the past decade.
When Syn says "Jazz fusion" he doesn't mean fusion jazz. He means he uses elements of Jazz in his playing when writing for Avenged. Maybe not in a lot of their earlier stuff, but starting in CoE you can start to hear what he's talking about. The odd tensions, the chromatic's, the technique, that's what he means by Jazz fusion.
I love the brass in Sunny Disposition (I know it’s not on CoE). I love that proggy shit. Hope to see more on their new album
I have always liked this guy since I saw the Bat Country video on MTV. Love his playing.
I love how he doesn't say, "like" and "ummm" all over the place. He definitely knows what he's talking about and he's not afraid to try and encourage people to get better.
Very impressive stuff, I'd love to hear these tracks on their next album! Maybe as instrumentals; they seem kinda hard to put under lyrics without wrecking it.
What if Syn did an instrumental album?
Thtd be so fucking dope.
Shrizzle ikr
he talked to fieldy of korn cuz fieldy is working on a jazz instrumental album
that would be awesome
Listen to the song called Exist, of their new album The Stage ;)
Always inspiring to see his videos
His practice shows. I would have never thought he was capable of this level of skill with such clean technique. Truly a man who defies all expectations. 10 years younger Syn would be gawking at how much better he is with practice.
Oh god, please upload Syn's performance only !!! (and the interview part only too, of course)
I would love you so much Guitar Center ! Pleeeeease
4 months after... And nothing changed.
3 years later
ShinyCLEM You legit think they're gonna listen?
There's a small chance that they might. Not at this point but at first... Yeah
4 years later..
Such an amazing player I live this man biggest influence and whole reason I started playing
my favorite guitarist of all time! love this man
A amazing Guitar Player...this is a throw back to the 80's style of guitar playing. Great to see rock is very much alive in 2017.
As a guitarist, 0:58-1:08 is orgasmic to me. Sounds trippy and reminds me of RoS
i think RoS its Rings on Saturn
hes correct ^ it sucks that Synyster doesn't have a solo album where he can play technical stuff like this.
exactly what I was thinking when I first heard it
Seriously, how the hell does he come up with that??
You'd like building the church by Steve Val
We need to see more of this today. What an incredible talent Synyster Gates is and so well rounded in all genre's of music composition. Definitely one best guitarists I have seen in years. Pure raw gifted talent. 🤘🤘💪💪
This guy is my fucking inspiration and when I listen to his solos/riffs, I get so fucking motivated... great player
He's a really solid player and writer... he has musicality built in, his melodies are thoughtful and expressive without being dumbed down and he mentions Holdsworth so he's a fellow traveler for sure. Nothing but respect for this dudes schtick
I personally don't care for his band, but this guy knows what he's fuckin doing!
biggest inspiration for me to play guitar 😂
He is a really really really goog player, everytime I watch this, I'm just..oh my god this is so awesome, how someone can play like this?? I admire...
Syn and Malmsteen always been my favorite guitarists. GUITAR GODS
i love that solo
As if I couldn't love this man anymore. He really knows his jazz theory.
wow he's so amazing and talent! love u Syn
Synyster gates is my biggest idol. He keeps my motivation up when I'm about to give up guitar playing
Amazing player. Starting to look more and more like his dad too..
Our friends Avenged Sevenfold’s 'Waking The Fallen: Resurrected' is in stores TODAY. Check it out here: smarturl.it/getresurrected + Here’s a clip of Synyster Gates' recent Master Class at Guitar Center Hollywood.
hey could you guys post only the solo video please
KeremK would be awesome
Is there any DVD out from this?
khalid filali but why is this filmed?
yeah it is i m just asking if they can upload full solo with hq audio that's all
I really love the stuff he's playing here.
That technique he has is unreal...
Best guitarist of modern hard rock.
hes playing the rev guitar :D
"The Stage" solo is a classic not to mention the rhythm work and fills.
Amazing! Great guitar player for the next metal years!
favourite guitar player. brian is amazing!
Love the interview portion, and the guitar solo... but not both of them on top of each other. I hate when videos do this. Let me watch both separately instead of trying to focus on two things at once.
they did the same when they did the Interview with James Hetfield lol
it's a trailer to the whole master class!
George Sevnv I hope the whole thing gets posted, or at least the instrumental performances alone
It's called production, and it's quite popular among people that want to make a career of the industry
2inchfromtheground Production also occurs when people edit solely instrumental sections... Audio mixing... Shot transitioning... Yeah, this video is cool and all. But the guitarist in me would like to watch one where the talking doesn't sit on top of the musical performance. You can only listen to Gates talk so much about the same things, but you can listen to a piece of music endlessly...
I’ll just go ahead and say it… this guy is going places.
Fuck, man. He’s still underrated.
This is why I love playing guitar
It's like he's ringing a bell.
But fucc the effortlessness of this is just amazing to witness.
he's playing with the rev model, that's cool:)
#REV FRET INLAYS💪💪 RIP foREVer in our hearts
Now he’s an inspiration for guitarists like me all over the world.
Life is but a dream…..
My favorite A7X release and I’ve been a fan since STST
Synyster, you are the Monster. Humble, melodic, sentimental solos... You are! Greetings from Brazil.
1:25 to my eyes, his fingers literally started moving like dragonball z characters punching at each other.
They literally moved so fast that they had motion blur. That was insane.
I have always loved this guy and has been one of my favourite guitarists, but in the earlier days his playing could be a bit sloppy at times but god he has tightened up his playing so much. Also his melodic solo's are easily some of the best
this man is fabulous
This is why I love A7X - they aren't afraid to push themselves musically. They are obviously fantastic musicians, but those bands that take some chances and go in different musical directions, sometimes strike gold. And that is my opinion of their last album - absolute gold. Gates and Jason Hook are 2 of my favorite guitar players and it was well worth the money to see them on the same stage last year. What these 2 guys do on guitar just keep making hard rock and metal so much better. We are very lucky to live in times with this much talent, new and old, currently making great music.
0:57 you can see his finger is shaking..
he was so fuckin nervous. its his first master class
noticed it too, but he is still the best!
You can also see him looking at his feet for the whole thing. He appears really nervous. Personally, I'd be a lot less afraid here than on stage in front of a ton of people playing the really tough stuff.
Feisal Irfansyah ok, and? on stage, all eyes aren't on him. here, they are.
Aww, made me feel bad for him😆 he nailed it tho🔥🔥 best guitarist evr
One of the best guitarists in the world, and THE best for me :) Love his style.
I love how he just mashes the genres together, and how he really understands what he's doing yet it still sounds insane to listen to. And ppl say metalheads are stupid...
Not a big Avenged Sevenfold fan, but this dude is seriously talented.
Sin Has Gotten So Much More Better Ever Since The Revs Death..
Right now, he is on top of the lead guitar position on the metal world. He is really my favorite guitar player of all times.
Seyse the day é um dos solos mais lindos.... Parabéns.
That song should definitely be available for download!
This confirms what I've been saying for ages, whether you like A7X or not but Brian is certainly a great guitar player and has huge potential,I only wish he would show it a bit more in A7X,if he could breathe a bit more and incorporate more of this stuff he was talking about in their music I'm sure their compositions would become more interesting, using the full potential and leaving no stone unturned in any creative mind can make any band explode beyond comprehension.
there in his solos, not so much hail to the king (was more of a rock album) but there other stuff, anyway i agree 100% so far away was truly a beautiful song...that he wrote... entirely...
we had a taste of it on City of Evil. He's a better guitar player now so if he uses his full potential on the next album they could write a masterpiece. I really hope they do.
@@theashes7149 Well, i Hope you liked The Stage lol 😁😁
Just noticed that the letters on syn's guitar are REV😭❤️
He really emphasized his jazz in their side project of the rev they are mezmer and pinkly smooth
Ah! I want to find this song, without his words! Only music!
Easily the greatest shredder of all time!
SYNYSTER GATES EL MEJOR DE TODOS!!!
Didnt thought he would be hated , i just feel huge freaking admiration , above any guitarist you name it.
I love this instrument,
before killing someone I always listen to this.
Is there a site where I can see the full master class session with the HD multi-angled cameras, and mixed audio like this clip? It doesn't seem like they would put so much effort into equipment for just a 4:48 minute clip...any help would be appreciated.
Such a soft handsomeness about his face, aside from that crazy dexterity on that guitar.
Really don't care for his band's music, but he is such a great player it's sick!
deathbastardable they're a good band tho try checking their earlier stuff
Waking the Fallen: Resurrected it's all you need!!
Braedon Morrissey no. Its not their best album they became legends with city of evil
WhiteBoyWithAnIpod I actually think it’s self titled is their best work
Emily Abrams you really can’t go wrong with any album except in my mind I don’t care to much for the first record and hail to the king has a few good songs but I wouldn’t put it up with the others
I wonder if this was a factor to the style used in The Stage. Some of it sounds very similar to it
Seen the band in concert, & they were decent! I've seen a lot of bands over the years, & I still haven't seen anyone who can play like the Late, Darrel Abbott "Dimebag" of Pantera! That man was a Monster on the Guitar!
8 years ago and I’m hearing “the stage” in some of this
Coming from a jazz fusion background. I think this guy really has the style and the potential to make the first ever jazz metal band. It could be his side project?
They already exist, they're called pinkly smooth
Matt7811 Pinkly Smooth was Goblin Metal.. Or at least thats what he said
Jazz metal already exists. They're called Exivious.
Ming Wu Yeah Exivious is the closest to jazz metal that exists
Synyster Gates made it to the hall of fame. Just wait...
Its crazy how clean he is playing that fast
Maybe not the best guitarist of all time, but definitely my greatest inspiration and motivation to keep playing guitar. Much love
I need this backing track. So cool
Seriously GC, it's been a year or two; post the full solo of him playing. We all want it for a long time! :(
Dude's gotta make this shit into a song.. absolutely ridiculous
