Band members said "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'" and "If someone died in a car accident, you’d say, ‘Oh, poor thing.’ But if they died in a car accident while they were drunk, that would change your whole perception of how they died, and judging his or her death a in a different way". This view of different perspective is related to chop suey as it has a vast array of different ingredients. Also Suey can be used as slang for suicide. In my opinion, Its about putting a different perspective of a person who struggles with their mental health and how others perceive them. As soon as the person wakes up they "grab a brush and put a little makeup" to "hide the scars and fade away the shakeup" so people around them can't see or judge them. The use of "You wanted to" being screamed in an accusatory tone reflects how the person blames themselves for their own struggle or how others blame the person for what they've done to themselves. The lines "I don't think you'll trust in my self righteous suicide" is about how this person feels others would see their suicide attempt as shallow and self-righteous, instead of someone who needed help and was desperate to stop their pain. The song here also uses a lot of biblical imagery, kind of showing how a different perspective of Jesus' death could be viewed as suicide by some and how that can change peoples perception. The biblical imagery shows the similarities and differences between martyrdom and suicide and how they can be warped depending on the perspective of society. This comparison continues with "father, into your hands, I commend my spirit" and "father, into your hands, why have you forsaken me" being among the last words Jesus said as he died. It also shows that the person this song is about, feels alone, abandoned and judged. The bitterness in the end's "trust in my self righteous suicide" can either mean that the person chose to commit suicide or that they refuse to die and be labelled self righteous and have the ability to feel for others and cry for people who die, even if society said they deserved to.
From what I've heard, the working title of the song was "Suicide" but later they decided against it in favor of something less potentially controversial, so they literally needed to "chop" Suey(cide) - hence the actual title.
Crazy thing is the Biblical lines were selected by pure chance. They didnt have lyrics and the Producer told him to grab a random book and select a random line.
@@Treadstone7 They were actually told by the label to change it because "suicide wasn't radio friendly." This is also why there is the scene in the video where they just look bored eating chop suey... it a giant middle finger to the label.
SOAD is intelligent music. They were able to do hits, and even hide quite controversial subjects to there, like critisizing war inside a party song. B.Y.O.B is the song.
"Felt like chaos to lullaby" beautifully said❤ That is a great way to describe this song, and probably a big factor in why it feels so impactful... could be said for a lot of their songs
This song is just so extremely sad. It says so much about how our society views various sufferings and how people "deserve" what they do to themselves. Another very profound and introspective SOAD song is "Lonely Day".
Song title pronounced Chop Sue - E. The meaning of the song - Guitarist Daron Malakian, who wrote it with lead singer Serj Tankian, explained: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'" The original name of the song was "S**cide," but Columbia Records made them change it to make it radio friendly. In the beginning of the song, you hear lead singer Serj Tankian say "we're rolling s**cide." The title is a bit of a play on words - "Suey-cide." Thank God that God will never forsake us. Praise Jesus.
If God really does exist, weve all been foresaken. Why did my ANGEL of a father who NEVERhurt ANYONE die a slow horrible PAINFUL death from cancer?? Where was your god then????
I really noticed when this song was new that millions and millions of non-metal fans that were religious really loved this song. I remember them with crosses on their neck chains singing this song and their huge base really pushed system of a down into serious stardom
"Odds and ends assorted pieces" is the literal meaning of Chop Suey in Chinese. I feel it's a very fitting description on how we all have come to be due to our own separate life experiences and still be able to share this blue dot in space. Peace/JT
Chop Suey means that they literally chopped the word Suicide (the original name of the song) and keep Sui/Suey which you can prononce the same way. All this because of the label saying "Suicide" is not good for sale and bankable for radio. You can also see in the video the easter egg when Serj, the vocalist, eats actual Chop Suey meat with a sad face, to make "fun" of their label with this decision.
My top one SOAD , song with a power subtle meaning , if you focus at the lyrics. So painfull song . Serj Tankian, and Daron Malakian's vocal blendings are stunning. John Dolmayan's drumming is epic.
Swear I don't mean to make this about race, but growing up Mixed (Black & White) and always having an ear for Rock, Metal etc.. And being made fun of for it.. These types of reaction channels bring me so much inner peace... Just kind of a reassurance that I wasn't wrong for liking music that my fellow melanated people thought was "devil worship". Needless to say I'll be binging your reactions
They wanted to name the song Suicide (or something similar) but their label didn't like it, and so they "chopped" the word in half and ended up with Chop Suey, which is also the Chinese-American food you see Serj eating out of the little white paper box in the video. SOAD's drummer, John, said in an interview once that they don't really want to spell out specifically what the lyrics mean to them because they want everybody to be able to have their own reaction and interpretation of them. The guitarist and backup vocalist, Daron, who wrote this song said that, to him, it was about how we view/judge people's deaths based on the circumstances of their death. The "father why have you forsaken me" bit supposedly came from a moment when Serj just flipped open a bible and stuck his finger on the page and that was the line he landed on. It is supposed to be similar to what Jesus said while on the cross.
Many call it Nu Metal but I think it's more Folk-Metal ;) Please try a track from their first album next. Honestly, any song from that album, the entire thing is a masterpiece.
great band but..............."wont give lead singer respect by naming him" when he said that AMERICA deserved what they got on 9-11 he basically got kicked out from other members.
If God really does exist, weve all been foresaken. Why did my ANGEL of a father who NEVERhurt ANYONE die a slow horrible PAINFUL death from cancer?? Where was your god then????

More terrible music. Sorry, I’ve officially lost interest in this channel. Unsubscribing.
Oh, someone has different tastes? How could it be?
@@VORASTRA it’s better to say, someone has taste in music. I like lots of kinds of music, when they’re pleasing to the ear. This stuff is not that.
@@brianharriman7979 Okay, so it's not pleasing to your ear but that doesn't make it "terrible music"
@@lalalalisa41 yeah, it’s terrible
