I love Sorrento. I've been twice and both times the hotel was great! It's a great place to base your adventures from Naples to Amalfi. The little railroad makes it very easy to visit the ancient Roman sites and Naples. You have your choice of ways to visit the Amalfi coast. And for all it's touristy qualities, Sorrento is still beautiful.
This makes me so sad. We visited Italy for the first time last May, spent three days in Rome and about 10 days in Sorrento. We couldn’t have loved Sorrento more. We explored Sorrento over several days (saw The Three Tenors, took a wonderful cooking class with Carmen, etc.), in addition to eating pizza (twice in one day) in Naples, taking a boat ride to Capri, hiring a driver (who became a friend) to take us to Amalfi, Positano and Ravello, taking the train to Pompeii, walking to the top of Mount Vesuvius and many other memorable experiences. We couldn’t have loved Sorrento more. The local people were friendlier and kinder than anywhere we’ve been (and we’re from the Deep South of the U.S.), the views were amazing, the history was plentiful, and the FOOD (including lemon-everything and the best olive oil imaginable, in addition to all the tomato-based dishes) was out of this world. We hope to go back again and again. It’s even on a short list of places we would move to. I have enjoyed watching many of your videos on UA-cam and appreciate the work you put into them and the information you deliver. However, your description of Sorrento (based on your real but unfortunate experiences) doesn’t resemble our family’s experience at all. I hope that anyone who was turned off of visiting Sorrento based on this video will do their own due diligence and give it a try.
I think American hospitality standards are just really, really high. We went to Italy multiple times, simple, non-luxurious hotels or B&B but clean, and we were perfectly fine with it.
what was the best way to get around? we booked tours in October leaving from the sorrento port/marina but from our airbnb it'll take over 30mins to train ride. would you suggest taking the taxi? can you give me more input about that?
I've been to Sorrento no less than 12 times and I NEVER had a bad experience anywhere CLOSE to what is being portrayed here! There are plenty of wonderful restaurants, Azz! being my favorite, and the options for lodging are incredible! I've never spent more than 80€ euros per person for VERY nice places WITH breakfast! And it is the single best location to stay for a week or more and be able to experience everything the Bay of Naples has to offer!
Thanks Jocelyn and Mark for your honest appraisal. It is so needed these days as Instagram etc has made everywhere look paradisiacal when obviously there are cracks in every tourist destination that need to be taken into account when visiting. Bravo to you both ☺️✨🌷.
That is really nice of you. Thank you. Yes, ive tried to put out more videos on more channels to help combat the horrible tracel advice ive been seeing online lately. Travel hug to you from jocelyn and myself
@woltersworld Been to Sorrento and Capri twice. I should have added two other tips. For 2 couples we used Sorrento First Choice driver for a private day long trip to Amalfi, Ravello and Positano and highly recommend them. Also, down close to the boats on Capri, there is a small grocery deli, and they made us fantastic sandwiches.
Love Sorrento! I had a great place to stay at Villagio Verde. I had a little bungalow with a kitchenette and a private patio. It wasn't fancy, but the staff were great, and the poolside bar was reasonably priced. I took the bus from Naples to Sorrento because it was cheap and I was too late for the last ferry. Loved the video!
his insightful video offers valuable tips on what to avoid during your trip to the Amalfi Coast, helping you steer clear of common pitfalls so you can fully enjoy the stunning scenery, culture, and charm of this breathtaking destination.
My dad is from Sorrento and we often spent our summers there during the 70s and 80s, staying at my grandmother's apartment literally across the road from Marina Grande. It was a proper beach back then. We were sometimes there for the festival of St Anna, which from memory takes place in August. I haven't been there since 2007, but even then it had changed so much since my childhood. It's a beautiful part of the world and well worth a visit. Important to remember when visiting churches that shoulders and legs need to be covered.
We based out of Salerno (much more Italian) and went up and down from there and home from Naples, however the bin workers were on strike in Naples again 😮
Guys, go to Sant' Agnello instead. It is less touristy and is only a 15 minute walk/ 5 minute train/bus/car ride away from Sorrento. It also has the rail to Naples, Herculanium and Pompei. PS. Don't take the train from Naples to Sorrento when coming from the airport, instead there is a Curreri Viaggi bus directly from the airport. It is only 10 euros a person each way.
We took a tour with Perillo. They did a great job and all those problems were taken care of for you. It is expensive but well worth it. My suggestion for going to Capri is to take Bonine or Dramamine, I got sick on the ferry. What a fabulous trip though. Everyone should go to these places.
We based in Meta which was a couple miles from Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana train route. Stayed there for a month. Much cheaper than Sorrento and the rental was wonderful .
I loved Sorrento there was 8 of us and no matter where we went they were always accommodating we all feel I love with it. We did the almafi coast Capri loved it all. We’ll definitely be visiting Rome for 3 or 4 days; however, we’re undecided on another location to spend the remainder of our trip. My spouse and I are outdoors and beach type of people. We are undecided on one of the following three locations: 1) Sicily, 2) Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast, 3) Florence/Naples. We are also big foodies, local not touristy. Any help on making this decision will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Mark's wife here, imo if you like hiking the Sorrento/Amalfi option is probably best of those...we hiked to Anacapri one year, it was great. But also, look into Cinque Terre and see if that may fit y'all well. We obviously have vids on all those locations. There's also good hiking/walks in Tuscany.

Hey Mark. When walking down the streets of Venice or the squares or walking around in Rome, can you smoke a cigar? I know you can't indoors but I mean just walking around ouside. Thank you
It’s going to be very crowded and you won’t feel comfortable with a cigar. Heck you’ll probably want to light one up after you get out of the crowds just to destress :)
We are planning to rent a car from Rome and visit Capri. Do you know if we can park in Sorrento somewhere and take the ferry to Capri and stay there? Is parking expensive?
I just booked The Hilton Sorrento! Do you have any private drivers that you can recommend? Or anyone here can send me some info on a driver to pick us up from Naples airport to sorrento RT? It’s soooo expensive lol

Love Italy, disagree a little bit on the driving part, if you're an experienced driver, you can easily drive there beautiful view, yes you need to focus on the driving part, maybe because where I'm originally from we have roads like that. We drove from Rome to Sorrento and then went to Luca, Florence, Pisa and Naples. Naples was the only place I felt unsafe during our 10-day Italy trip. Can't wait to go back. Stayed in the hotel Caravelle with a beautiful view of Mount Vesuvius.
Well two minutes into your vlog I have cancelled going to Sorrento. It sounds horrendous. ‘Get doing the blue grotto over with first’, I won’t go at all.
Number 1. Don't get black out drunk and pee on someone's front door. Found our the hard way 😅 Italians might be small but they're strong I'll tell ya that
Sorry, that is partly BS...been there 3 times. Parking in Sorrento is no issue, and we have a big car. Directly next to beginning of the downtown area. Compare to other Tourist attraction Cities it is fine, but no comparison to Capri for example...I would never pic a Place to stay where I have the tiniest doubt about cleanliness - yeah its going to be more expensive - they know the Americans will pay for it... ;-)
I am Italian from Naples and live in England but what you are telling people is not accurate and is not fair. The main one being how to get to Sorrento from Naples. Unless you are on a budget no Tourist would dream of going to Sorrento on the Circumvesuvian train whoich os for locals and does not allow big suitecase like a tourist would have. And please get it right how you say Napli Centrale. Foir you Americans its chay tra lay ,

Don't agree with you about Naples, People were super nice to us and friendly that when we continued to Rome it felt like something missed in Rome
I'm allergic to lemon 🍋 😒
Love Italy, disagree a little bit on the driving part, if you're an experienced driver, you can easily drive there beautiful view, yes you need to focus on the driving part, maybe because where I'm originally from we have roads like that. We drove from Rome to Sorrento and then went to Luca, Florence, Pisa and Naples. Naples was the only place I felt unsafe during our 10-day Italy trip. Can't wait to go back.
Stayed in the hotel Caravelle with a beautiful view of Mount Vesuvius.
I booked an Uber and don't forget to negotiate

Well two minutes into your vlog I have cancelled going to Sorrento. It sounds horrendous. ‘Get doing the blue grotto over with first’, I won’t go at all.
Air B&B is no longer something I'd even consider. It jumped the shark long ago.
When I see this amount of Corona masks, I'm already fed up with all this 😞
You should call it "The Barf Bus" instead of vomit bus.
Foir you Americans its chay tra lay ,
Literally wouldn't go even if half these things are true.
Well, i think more than half are true or else I wouldnt have said them
We've been there a lot and it's all true in our experience. So...
Rubbish my friend been going there since 1967
“Been going there” AKA “touring” 😂
Waste of time. This guy could’ve said it all in two minutes. Could he be a chronic complainer?
