A thing to note - Grand line doesn't lie at the equator. It crosses it at the 45° angle. The poles are in the middle of North and South Blues, not on the Red line.
Note: During time skip Nami landed on a skyisland. On it there are scientists that study the weather. They spread water among islands with water shortages.
@@elcalabozodelandroide2alabasta wasn't fine they had to use that powder to make it rain And even if it was fine those people would have to check on all islands regularly because even 1 year without rain is catastrophic not to mention that alabasta had no rain for 3 YEARS!!
I'm surprised that Matpat never touched on the fact that every Island in the Grand Line has its own individual magnetic field and climate surrounding it. I don't know much about that type on science but I thought for sure that it would have interesting implications if carried over to the real world.
@@greywolf9783 dude, it's not that magnetism is something that we cannot comprehend, the shocking thing would be having such a massive land mass that causes such magnetic fields that they override how Compasses work. Having such massive magnetic fields would be astronomically different to the real world
A couple of things matt didnt mention: - one piece planet has 6 moons to effect the tide - the planet is huge, alabasta is the size of australia based on canon measurements, and theres still a vast amount of ocean around it with the calm belt not in sight
It had 6 moon once probably (from the Ohara model). But in the current timeline, there is only one moon (where enel went and HQ of space pirates). Also, there are quite a few references to the phases of the moon there for different planning (raid,...). Oda also draws different phases of the moon. So, it is yet to be seen.
@flusel4949 it is from the measurement of the sandora river which which vivi states is 50km wide. Usopp asked her how far to the other side (of where they are currently crossing) indicating she wasnt refering to the river's mouth but the "thinner" sections inside the country. For reference australia is 4,000km wide from east to west, so just 80 sandora rivers side by side would cover the whole continent

@@choboibigly6565 Something like that, there’s supposed to be an actual part of the ocean where all the seas mix somewhere in the world, idk if that means there’s a break in the red line somewhere or what

There is a quote that's floating around stating it's 10x. But either way it's a lot larger than earth. THen you have people that don't understand how math works calculating One Piece is nearly the size of the sun ... which... come on man just traveling oceans that size would take years without jet engines so clearly that's not correct. 10x is at least possible even if that does feel perhaps a tad too large.
@@metazoxan2 the one piece world is definitely not the size of the sun but your point doesn’t prove that. If the planet was bigger we can just assume that everyone and everything on the planet is bigger
@@reubenkaimacuata1795not really no. There are characters heights and weights data available for at least the main cast. Even if not you could at least gauge how they are based on their looks.
theres a lot of inconsistencies when trying to work out the size of the one piece planet. ive seen calculations done that place it at: 2-3x the size; 10x the size, and at the extremes, either 3,000x the size, or 0.0015x the size 0.0015 is the only one i remember the reasoning for, i think the first time the sunny used coup de burst, they flew 1km away, and there wasnt anything in sight from before they used it, indicating that the horizon on the planet is at most 1km away, (a planet with a 1km horizon would have a radius of roughly 10km, unlike earths 6,000km) i think the general consensus though, is that the one piece world is somewhat bigger than earth, just not know how much bigger
Please re-do the analysis with consideration that the grandline is not over the equator but actually at an angle as mentioned by Law somewhere around chapter 1000. It would be super interesting to see if the world would be more livable at least climate-wise. Love your videos!!!
I’m sure Matt hasn’t gotten around to all of one piece. I’m also sure that there are still more interesting details about the planet that haven’t been explored yet. So trying to make a one piece atlas isn’t possible yet. Also don’t forget the civilization in the clouds, I’m sure that effects the climate of the planet too.
You're forgetting a crucial detail, there, MatPat! It's true that the mountains in California cast a rain shadow over the regions to the east, but that region is almost entirely dry land. If the world of One Piece is 90% water, then most of the area affected by the 'rain shadow' will be ocean. Almost all rain that falls on land starts in the ocean. While the area won't be receiving moisture from the west, it will have its own ocean to contribute moisture to the air.
Moreover the dirn of wind assumed by matpat is wrong as he assumed grandline at equator but rather ints in middle of East and West blue so the wind from middle of West blue will hit the middle of East blue changing
Honestly, this point is really weak... Does he really believe all the moisture would be trapped on the eastern half of the island. As if the west wouldn't have it's own wind and ocean currents. Like you said only planets in the vicinity of the red line would face this issue. Not even taking into account that areas in the grand line would probably have ways around this do to it's wacky weather system.
I think something interesting to add to this is that water politics is a very real thing in one piece (Alabasta) where the access to water was as central plot point or the more recent raising of the water levels in both the more recent events in the manga or water 7 sinking
Your probably correct but from where I am up to in the series (Start of Alabasta) doesn’t it mention that only Alabasta or Alabasta was really the only one suffering from drought (only major one).
@@theorytree842 it was mentioned that if Alabasta used dance powder the neighboring countries would also suffer from drought due to clouds raining on Alabasta. This would mean that rain is there only source of fresh water and that there isn't much (otherwise rivers and lakes would have formed, allowing them to be more independent from rain) Also, Alabasta is literally thousands of kilometers away from any other island and yet replenishing the country in water would need require to dry up the sky enough to cause droughts to those same neighboring countries that are thousands of kilometers away. But I don't think it was mentioned other than in this arc.
@@Cipher_Paul I didn't get to that part yet, I only knew that the Old Man didn't want it to be known because it was illegal. But if every country has the powder, then wouldn't it be alright. Supply and Demand would go crazy though.
A few corrections: 1. One Piece world's regional weather has a much more significant effect on the climate than global monsoons, for example, Little Garden is a tropical island, the one near it, Drum Island is a tundra, and Alabasta is a desert. 2. There are global deep water current systems explained in the Fish-man Island arc that connect the world's oceans other than the Reverse Mountain. One of the weirdest natural phenomena in the One Piece world is the fact that there is breathable air as far out as the moon, shown in Enel's (lightning god guy) coverage story.
@@imfruitysthen it wouldn’t be world it would be what if the one piece map is realistic since the one piece world already have solutions for most of the problems
A couple things: 1) The OP world is significantly larger than Earth, there's videos you can find where people have done the calcs (shout out Tekking101). 2) The Red Line & Grand Line intersect at a 45 degree angle (forming an "X" on the planet) as opposed to N-S then E-W. 3) There are powerful deep ocean currents in the OP world that are able to move water back and forth between the seas.
not to mention, the population is significantly less dense, so food and water supplies are typically not going to be an issue on pretty much any island.
yearp also parts of the world are affected by devil fruit users so extreme heats for example isnt a thing when aokiji can casually freeze part of the sea equal to the mediterrean see just to go around with a bike
Id like to ask: how is is possible for the water to get from one sea to another if the calm belt prevents it? It cant be both calm and strong currents.
Ok. I've seen countless videos where they get it wrong - even including a recent Tekking101 video btw. No one in the comments EVER mentions it, and it drives me insane every time lol. Why don't people normally realize that for the North Blue to be in the north and for the South Blue to be in the south the Grand Line can't be the equator, it seems so obvious xD Also why does this comment section get at it right??
Or, honestly, (if I'm getting this right and didn't somehow manage do horribly mix up the characters) how does this dude get so lost? Like bros showed up in different animes
On a note, you can see the different climates of the blues. The North Blue is known to be always cold, the South Blue is known to be tropical and East and West Blue are pretty diverse in the climate with normal seasons
Something he failed to realize is that we literally do have calm belts in real life. They're called doldrums, and the reason you never see them talked about is because ships avoid them due to the absence of wind. They ALSO stretch around the equator.
Most if not all points had been already answered either in the Manga or by Oda. Theres solutions already in place for all of that, the fresh water, the grand line and calm belts. I loved the points Matpat made in the video, but as a die hard One Piece can ima have to put in my two cents. Something he neglected to mention, the One Piece world is nearly 3 times larger than earth, so the effects mentioned in the video wouldn’t be as nearly as drastic as if they were to happen in the real world. I think Oda did perfect portrayed the actual struggles perfectly, the islands visited could easily be justified with logic.
Wouldn't made the effects much more drastic tho? It means less of the planet is being directly heated by the sun thus the red and great calm line blocking the currents more important than if the planet were smaller
@@lookatthepicture4107 If the world in One Piece is that large even something the height of the Grand Line would act like a much smaller bump to block the wind. Increase in gravity means the atmosphere is likely to extend much higher than the earth's.
Ocean to cloud coverage is a bit difficult to make hard predictions for, as far as I know. Basically, more ocean to land doesn't mean less rainfall, it likely means *more* rainfall. And while the wind crossing the red line *would* dehydrate the down-wind air, it's still over a great ocean, the drying effect is going to be very temporary. Combine that with the massively larger scale, someone has made the argument that just one area is the size of earth, another one pointed out that a river on one island was 50km wide, putting that island on the scale of Australia. And now here the claim that the world is ~3 times larger. I don't know which claim is more correct, but even on an Earth scale version of this planet I don't foresee too much drought downwind of the red line. Frankly, unless I'm mistaken it has more to do with the position of the planet within their suns Goldilock Zone than the percentage of ocean to landmass. Granted, I could very well be wrong here. I'm sure an actual meteorologist would have more nuanced opinion about it. It just seems like you have to specifically replace Earth's land distribution to that of One Piece to get the very specific results being discussed. And I still find that questionable. Just look at Earths history, what did Pangea look like for instance? Being one super continent it put the "salty oceans" further away from the coasts, yet it was arid and hot for large periods of time. The lack of nearby ocean to form clouds would have an effect on the interior. And all of this doesn't really effect the chance of it being something that could exist. All you need is the right balance of sun to water, and throw in a few evolutions in plants, fungi, and bacteria that take advantage of the salty coast lines and you could have a perfectly working eco system. The discussion is more along the lines of, what if we terraformed Earth to look like One Piece.
@@niello5944 Not really Bc the great lone would be up to scale with the rest of the world and is stated that there is no wind in the Great Calm the wind is still being blocked
Note: the rain shadow effect won't happen to every island since all the islands in one piece is almost surrounded by water, which means almost every island is getting moisture air and so all islands in one piece is lush green as shown in the series

Agreed, and well written. I felt a little sorry that One Piece got so much shade in this one (i.e. "if One Piece was at all realistic" mentioned like 3 times). A little more time in the oven could've included Alabasta, even offhand in the script, the All-Blue, the temperature there when actually seeing it as a diagonal planet, maybe some questions about gravity
Ngl. This one made me miss Austin! 😢 Nice that he wanted to jump on the topic but this definitely felt like a hype chase than a theory. Gl Netflix on the new show
Matpat I love all your theory's but as someone who is a One Piece fan the extremely cold and snowy/the extremely hot and dry lands are exactly what we see in Drum Island and Alabasta! Plus I guess we just aren't going to talk about how big the One Piece world is with Big Mom being 28 ft tall and Oars that big red giant demon thing is about 208 ft tall...which means that the One Piece world is WAY bigger than ours...which means the water percentage is like 70 maybe even 60% water considering how big it is,the lands would also have to be big. I still love your theory's though this is not hate just me explaining some things hope it helps!
Lets not forget that the islands on the grand line pretty much have their own climates. Drum Drum island is like the polar ice caps where water 7 is like a very nice vacation town and little garden is like stuck in the prehistoric age with the climate to match.
Matpat you missed a crucial part of the one-piece world that the north, east ,west and south seas are called that way because they are in that direction and the redline doesn't divide the globe in north-south direction rather in a diagonal way from northeast to southwest and vice-versa for the grandline, while it might not make any difference for the theory (maybe) but makes a huge difference in how the weather might work as the heat distribution will change drastically meaning the east n west seas might not be as inhabitable as they seem and this is backed by the characters in the show itself ,for example when the map of the world is shown in the show. Also the size of the planet makes a big impact on everything else it has. I hope you see this and think about it and I hope to see the next videos to be a bit more accurate. And don't feel bad I actually loved the video just thought that I should point out this thing even though it might not be that big or cause an significant impact. Hope you have a great day and keep making videos on one-piece.
It's definitely a very forgivable mistake since a lot of long time fans of One Piece have missed the orientation of the world being as it is, it's just easier to think of the Grandline being on the Equator because of how we tend to compare anime world to the Earth 🤔
I think everything in the video is all wrong. Matpat needs to research meteorology/climatology/whatever and oceanic currents in far more depth. It looks like he didn't at all, no exaggeration. I think this is the worst of matpat's attempts at a "science" vid. It has been a while since he made something so fallacious.
@@homerman76 Really? The first time I picked up One Piece, it was pretty evident that a full trip through the entirety of the Grand Line would bring you to the backside of Reverse Mountain by design. That's how circles work. And conveniently, the Grand Line and Red Line form the iconic X to mark the spot. Also, we hear pretty early that East Blue is considered the "easiest" sea, whereas North and South are generally considered the "hardest". It would make sense for the equatorial East and West seas to have it considerably easier than the polar capped North and South seas.

No literally it felt so rushed and incomplete, like don't get me wrong I love one piece and I also love mat pats theories but there's so many things that didn't come up that I expected to 😔
I agree that the Calm Belts would be devastating for the ecosystems all over the One Piece world, but I think you're forgetting one key factor when discussing the effect of the Red Line. When the sea winds coming in off the Pacific are stopped by the Cascade Mountains, it turns the other side of the Cascades into a massive desert because that area is a vast stretch of land with very little water of its own, therefore it can't sustain a normal cycle of evaporation and precipitation. However, in the case of the Red Line, the area where the rain shadow would be located is yet another vast ocean that covers half the planet, so that water would be able to evaporate normally and return to the surface as rain. (By the way, even if it DID work the way you described, it wouldn't affect EVERYTHING east of the Red Line; the rain shadow wouldn't extend all the way to where the Red Line crosses again so half of the planet would be barren no more than the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains renders everything to their east inhospitable. Of course the area immediately to the east of the Cascades is desert, and its effect extend as far as the western parts of Texas and Oklahoma, but beyond that are very fertile and thriving plains and forests that reach almost all the way to the Atlantic. The rain shadow would only effect at most one-quarter of the area to the east of the Red Line, and this would not be exclusively in the East Blue, South Blue, and the Paradise half of the Grand Line; you're not thinking in three dimensions. at the other end of those three seas, we would find the prevailing east-blowing winds being stopped by the Red Line and unable to reach the North Blue, West Blue, and New World, so that area would also experience a rain shadow the same as the eastern end of the others, but this is all rendered moot, as I said, because there is plenty of water there for its own evaporation/precipitation cycle.) And I won't even go into how a degree of weather control has been figured out in the One Piece world as covered in the Alabasta Arc. As for the lack of fresh water, just think about this. People develop technologies that solve problems, with the biggest problems being the highest priority. Because the need for fresh water would have been a VERY large problem (probably the biggest problem in the One Piece world), it would have be the focus of many a scientist and inventor, so I have no doubt whatsoever that desalination technology has not only been developed, but is in fact commonplace and has been refined and streamlined far beyond what the real world has since invention is driven by need. Furthermore, because the need is so prevalent, I am sure that many people have developed desalination technology independent of each other and/or have built on the technology invented by others. In short, for such a common need, it wouldn't even be possible for the wealthy to hoard the desalination technology as someone else would just invent it on their own again and again until it is finally created by someone altruistic enough to share it with the whole world freely (and since we know for a fact that the One Piece world has been in its current state and occupied by "civilized" people with the same approximate technological level for AT LEAST the last 800 years, not to mention the Void Century and the higher technology they had then, it is entirely feasible for that to have happened by now). In other words, the only major climatological issue would be the Calm Belts, and depending on EXACTLY how far they reach, there could still be tropical waters beyond them that would allow for currents to spread warmer waters. I personally agree with the theory that the One Piece world is tilted on an axis that places the poles in the North and South Blue, respectively, meaning the equator, rather than following the Grand Line, would go through the middle of the East and West Blue while allowing the southern tips of the North Blue and the northern tips of the South Blue to extend well into the tropical regions. In essence, the Red line and the Grand Line would for a giant X. How much of the North and South Blue extend into tropical waters is still dependent upon the breadth of the Grand Line and the Calm Belts, but on MOST of the maps Oda has drawn in the series it doesn't seem SUPER wide, so I think it should work out. Sorry this ended up so long, but I just had to address some important holes in your theory.
Why does this comment get so few likes, I fully agree with you! You probably read the book Sapiens. Since the entire map is tilted and the points you mentioned none of his theory really makes sense
The whole poles 'theory' isn't a theory in the first place - it's been confirmed for more than 25 years. I don't know how matpat missed such basic information while doing research in the first place.
I know very little about the One Piece world, though it fascinates me, and I had many thoughts exactly the same as yours from a world building perspective. I don't think it would necessarily be as harsh with desert vs winter wasteland as said in Mat's video, the tilted axis seems like it would have effects too like you say. Desalination tech would definitely be a super high priority for such a culture, lacking in natural fresh water. Loved the discussion prompted by the video, but glad I wasn't the only one thinking there are other solutions and possibilities. Even in the real world, there are places such as Montana/Alberta that, although on the far side of the Cascades and drier than Oregon/British Columbia, are far from deserts. Though maybe that is another phenomena, or due to their latitude, I am no expert on any of these things...

The problem with his theory is the scope of the mountains compared to the size of the world in OP. There are mountains near most coasts but obviously inland enough there are rampant winds hence why the bread basket of America is famous for tornados. Similarly, for OP, if the islands in the east blue are similarly far away, they wouldn't be affected by his theory as exemplified by the rain in Logue town
Yeah he's acting like half the planet would jsut NEVER get rain which ... does the think all rain would exclusively come from the west side and get stopped by the mountain? I would get behind a rainless area around the red line but ... that's a bit much. P.S. He also missed the fact there are underwater currents connecting the world's oceans. The ecosystems are still relatively independant but the transportation of water temperature does happen. But sure there are also floating islands once populated by an alien humanoids, and even with their technology, they’re practically an endangered species. So I guess the theory hold that the world it to hostile for anyone not from there to survive.
As a decades long One Piece fan I was happy to see Team Theorist finally do something on One Piece. Seeing all the comments, I'm wondering if I should just skip this video if the quality of the video seems to be as far off from what is basic understanding of the One Piece world as this comment section implies.
I have to agree. I understand that there are a lot of episodes, but I can't help but feel like the only thing to actually come directly from the show was the map of the world (which you can pretty much just google). No mention of Alabasta even, which is literally the first major arc, would fit well in the context of the desert/rain shadow effect, and would give some credit to the writers. Instead it was just "if One Piece was at all realistic" shade :(
You should remove your massive spoiler from your comment seeing as tons of people are about to get into this series for the first time and this will likely be one of the first videos they watch.
@@jaredrak6003 I don't think he meant it as shade, he never said it being cartoonish was a bad thing. Its obviously a cartoon following cartoon logic- he was simply curious what it'd look like if it had real world science applied to it. But yeah totally agree the researchers missed a bit here.
Interestingly, the first major arc in the Grand Line (the stuff actually just East of the Red Line) DO take place on extremely arid islands where food and rainwater are scarce. A huge drought is the central conflict of the Alabasta saga, the first main one in the area MatPat talks about here. It may be just a coincidence, but maybe Oda considered some of this as well. 🤔
@@Moikapy But Crocodile isn't responsible for the region's natural aridness. He's only responsible for stealing the thing that creates magical rain which was staving off the drought.
I would love to see more episodes like this talking about the worldbuilding of One Piece. The Worldbuilding is not only one of the most important and beloved parts about the show, but also it's much less heavy to cover the worldbuilding in small pieces rather than the overloaded lore that would be ipossible to catch up on. And as long as you use these theories to strengthen this sort of love for the show, I also don't think the chance of upsetting any fans would be that high.
7:41 Basically a Horse Latitude named after the fact that Viking Discoverers used to Maroon thier Horses to lose weight to even row and move in those latitudes because there's no wind.
Some notes: 1. Something that breaks this further is that the one piece world has been calculated to be 84% the size of our sun, meaning gravity would be extremely strong 2. All islands would receive moisture from the surrounding bodies of water, unlike the region of the United Sates which is completely blocked by mountains 3. Definitely watch One Piece. In the beginning, the number of episodes is daunting, but at the end you'll wish there were twice as many episodes (it is still going by the way at a rate of an episode every week, sometimes every 2.
@@pete8102 yes and canonically there are 20 million "recorded" islands in the sea we as a viewrs and readers watch the main character go around grand line while most of the sea is divided into the forementioned 4 seas.
The researchers dropped the ball on this ep. While yes the one piece island world would be a problem for earth sized planet, the one piece world is actually much more massive meaning these “small” islands would have enough water
One thing to point out is that most island are about a few days away from the the redline so they really wouldn't get the rain shadow affected. Plus each ocean has a different air and water current kind of rotating within there own ocean
I haven’t watched one piece, but this didn’t contain many spoilers, so the team did a great job, only shows you characters and tells you about locations
Haven’t watched this video yet but I’m already expecting some crazy backlash lol One piece has 1000+ chapters and an insanely huge world with literally hundreds of characters Best of luck! I’m certainly excited to see what Matpat came up with
Its bc of that i think why he hasnt tried it before now, hes probably been reading the manga trying to gain a good understanding of the world before he talked about it
Actually as a One Piece Theorist I support this idea. Even this world is based from a world that's not rotating, I can't possibly forget Roger's goal and quotation "Turn The World Upside Down" become literally true after the series end.
@@HerbaMachina it actually is near finished we're over halfway and have been for a few years now, but right now there is a lot of theories on it and there is a lot of weird things oda has taken into account, ways he writes maps for instance is weird when labing things he's taking into account the axis of the planet stuff like that. He's known the ending since day 1 as a good author should have their end fleshed out before. The way he has some stuff planned out has given people a fairly strong conclusion of certain events likely. One piece theories go pretty hard into the actual lore and world building that's been thankfully able to be set up over multiple decades
Interestingly enough, in recent chapters of the manga it was shown that there was a civilization with really advanced technology in the past but everything was (or seemed to be) destroyed by the current government and was hidden away from history. It's a bit implied that the world was different but it was shaped like this on purpose to separate the islands that were together a long time ago.
@@sadmanh0yeah they definitely didn't watch far into it or the robot guy would've contradicted the technology thing. Human upgrades and a train that's as fast as a bullet train but able to cross oceans is pretty advanced technology. And if he made it to flamingos story the concept of technology only gets more advanced.
The machine that crushed the one island and caused the sea to rise is indicative of terra forming. Also, let's not forget the moon civilization. Despite it only being robots and Enel it's obviously a space faring society
Something funny is that there's an martial art named Rokushiki which reveals that the atmosphere in one piece is different. There is a technique that allows you to "step on" flat air as if it was solid. It seems it exploits something along to surface tension, which suggests air in OP is more dense/has different properties compared to our own.
You can support this with the different types of clouds in the world of one piece. With the occurance of sky islands from 'Imperial Cumilus' clouds (and many others we learn about in Skypeia) within the verse. Who says the air doesn't have something to do with this and vice versa? The air density in OP could easily be slighty different, It just attests to how well Odas built the world.
This is the sign for everyone who hasn't to watch One Piece. Watch it. Trust me. I was sceptical when I started, even dropped it twice, but after getting into it, it is EASILY my favorite piece of media (TV-shows, movies, books etc. included)
According to Vegapunk's last words in chapter 1,113, the One Piece world is literally sinking into the ocean. The special weapon used by the World Government against Lulusia raised the sea level by 1 meter globally. That's one out of 8 rebelling islands so the minimum rise is 8 meters. This rise in sea level only intensifies if more islands are destroyed. The gradual increase without destruction of islands still gets faster for unknown reasons. Maybe it's the phrase "the darkness will swallow light" due to the sunlight tree, Eve, being sealed in the Red Line. This might be related to the Great Flood that happened 900 years before the story. Or it maybe that the islands are literally sinking into the ocean. At Water 7, the scenario might be different due to the Aqua Laguna floods. Maybe the floods started due too Wano's walls dumping tons of rainwater into the ocean. The World Government's original plan might've been to seal the Sunlight tree, Eve, and to destroy the 5,000 year old tree of knowledge.
Once you start it you get trough the story pretty fast if you are reading it.(6 months of a serie you know is great is fast for me when taking your time reading it). The information shown in this video is a pretty good view to the first 100 chapters though. The part about the red line mostly is explained in the first parts and is only a small snippet of a world so rich as this one.
Reading the manga is faster and the anime has a lot of non-canon events. It's 1000+ episodes in theory, but cut out the fillers and strecth time added to 10 minutes episodes and the episode count will be shorter.
Matt walked into this one himself. The info dump and corrections are astounding. I was going to info dump myself and correct a few things myself, but if I did that it would be several novels long. I decided not to do it, since most of the comments handle it.
@@KatoGS123what about the size of One Piece world prove Matpad wrong? Maybe because of the world is bigger therefore has more drinkable water but half of the planet is still a desert, water in equator is incredibly hot, and the upper north and south is inhabitable because of the cold.

The food can be solved by fishing, the fresh water can be solved by using those simple survival ways/tools or something similar in a largeer scale, it would be easy especially in the islands that only has like one village (i think nami's and usop's islands can be like that), the largest of islands would be like a city, and I think every large island we saw has a complex ecosystem that can help the people survive, like animals, lakes, deap water(i imagine alabasta has those considering it's a desert), plus with a lot of people the islands can more easily thrive to make, invent, and help make their lives easier and have more comfortable live and a bigger possibility to live a survivable easy life, moreover there are talented people in one piece like vegapank and franky and all the water seven people, the water seven itself is a huge artificial island, sanji's dad, the doctor that was in gecko morya's island the adopted father of chopper and his adopted mother,(I don't remember the names), and (spoiler for those who doesn't read the manga) vegapank island is also a technological advancement.

There were some spoilers long before the spoiler warning, imho 😅 Anyways: I get your point, but "less regulation, because every island is pretty much self governed" is a whole other topic to discuss in general. “No signs they’re gonna stop soon.” Well Oda has apparently said the manga is at about the ‘85% done’ range so the MAIN story will probably end in a few years (maybe) but yeah I don’t doubt the franchise as a whole won’t get more and more stories and lore and adaptations. When MatPat called the Calico Jack the Jolly Rodger made me a bit sad. The Calico Jack has crossed swords, and the Jolly Rodger has crossed bones so I'm not surprised they get mixed up all the time.
isn't Jolly Roger just the classic word used for a pirates flag? The flag with the crossed blades is just a different jolly roger design, which was erroneously associated with Calico Jack (at least according to wikipedia)
I've always wanted a one piece theory but knew it'd be too much content for matpat dig through so this totally caught me off guard and it's just made my week
Unfortunately it's a theory based on only the most shallow understanding of the One Piece universe. Their team clearly have no understanding is the technology level of the planet or the history of it. Applying normal weather logic to the grand land or the planet in general shows they have no concept of how climate works on this planet. The mention that engines are rare kind of disregards how common they are for the navy vs average pirates.
So some difference between the world of one piece and ours is that one piece world is 3 times the size, it also has dozens of moons rather then just one. The average depth of the earth ocean is also 3,688 meter while one piece oceans are 10,000. The atmosphere is very different since clouds can solidify. People in one piece could also evolved to drink salt, without any bad side-effects, people still drink alcohol to prevent scurvy. People in one piece being separated and the world be the way it is has caused humans to evolved very differently with giants, mer-people that would be immune to salt water, and animal people not to be confused with Zone. MatPat also forgot to mention the Neptunians also called sea king giant fish that exist all over the world. Also we don't know what the water movement is like because of both artificial water pressure generated by the world government, plus natural accuring currents in one piece are insanely. One piece actually has what could be considered futuristic technology the main reason we see wooden ships is because most people don't go out to sea like are our world it's a luxury, and also extremely dangerous. The ones that do use ether cheaper wooden boats or super indestructible god wooden boats, their is also modern metal ships, has well has futuristic weather controlling technology, submarines, blimps, This episode is way to long and not enough research has gone into it. I could right a three page paper on this video alone so I'm stop here.
If one show could pull off a crazy cheesy campy live action remake it's one piece. Though the budget it had and the fact a lot of people working on it also adore the show/manga and definitely helped make it good.
@@clarence3238 The reason is to make it more concise and functional with in the length and frame work of a single season. An adaptation should not attempt to be a one-to-one recreation of the source material as there are certain things that work well in one medium that don't in another.
@@barethor5869 True, if you want 1:1 just read the source material, people forget that even the kind of LoTR has many changes and cuts in the movie, yet it still good.
I'm in 1:20 minutes in and I'm already complaining. What version of the dub is Gold D Roger's speech like this. I remember it being "If you want my treasure, you can have it. I left everything I have together in one place. Now you just have to find it."
As one of the other comments said, it is the four kids dub, which, honestly, Rogers voice doesn't sound that bad given the track record that the 4 kids dub of one piece has.
Great Video, there's just some things It would be fair to mention. The poles on the One Piece world are in the middle of North Blue and South Blue, meaning the grand line doesn't line up perfectly on the equator neither the red line at the meridian, they form more like an X shape. Other things that are worth mentioning, on the other side of the Grand line, opposite to the reverse mountain, there's a place that exchanges water between the two halves of the grand line 10.000m underneath the ocean surface, where the Ryuugo Kingdom is. Not to mention the Mythic All Blue, where all the oceans meet, if the place is real than there's a way oceans exchange corrents. But there's more, the sense of scale doesn't match up with our world, if you take the cover story about Enel going to the moon at face value it is fair to assume that the atmosphere of the One Piece World extends pretty far and the planet is big enough for it's moon (or moons, there's evidence that suggest that there might be three moons) to have it's own atmosphere, thick enough to be breathable. Also there are sky island, and some of them can be self propelling as shown in the time skip when Nami goes to Weatheria, meaning there are ways to circumvent some of those problems and seeing that the sky islands, even though high up, have their own weather and it's good enough to sustain plant life similar to the plant life here in south america, it suggest that the air currents can go way above the red line. But if you've read the manga recently, there are other reasons for why the world is Broken. Spoiler Alert: So, there's an weapon that can destroy entire islands so efficiently that wipes them off the map, quite literally, living a massive hole in the ocean that, for some unexplained reason, makes all ocean levels rise on other islands (still couldn't wrap my head around that). The existence of Enies Lobby suggests that this was used before and it's proximity to Water 7 and the problems of water 7 with the Aqua Laguna also falls as evidence for that theory, so yeah, there might be other reasons for why the One Piece World is f***** up. Also, there might be a Giant tree at Elbaf that reaches the same heights as Zunesha and the Sky Islands, but that's pure speculation from the fans. But in the end all I''m saying is that the rabbit hole goes deeper if you really try to think about what's shown to us. The One Piece World is pretty strange in many levels.
I think I have an answer as for why an island destroying superweapon causes the sea levels to rise elsewhere in the in-canon universe: the superweapon turns the island itself (and potentially its inhabitants) into water, which would further imply that it’s the spirit of a Devil fruit consumer, who had the ability to transform anything into water. Now try wrapping your head around that! 😉
@@Succulent_PomegranateFor the rise in water level to be noticeable, a lot of water has to be imparted. I think it might be a sort of invisible pillar that crushes the entire island and foundation, or it could be a massive water hammer sort of thing.
@@vegitasama7633 it's a bit hard to count with the small moons as I am not sure they are moons or just part of the construction showing the One Piece planet and its moons. But there seems to be 7-9 moons, as well as the one moon that has its own moon.

Water shadows like you described only create drought over land masses. The whole point is that you get moist air from the ocean and then it gets dropped off. Basically it would just mean the red line is half desert half jungle. That drought wouldn't extend to any islands.

A couple of things matt didnt mention:
- one piece planet has 6 moons to effect the tide
- the planet is huge, alabasta is the size of australia based on canon measurements, and theres still a vast amount of ocean around it with the calm belt not in sight
Where does it say Alabasta is about the size of Australia? Not negating that fact, just curious.
Their was a measurement in a Wano chapter and if you measure Wano by that measurement it means Wano is the size of Earth itself
This was never confirmed, and it's far more likely that those "moons" are just other planets, its a heliocentric model.
The four oceans being almost completely separated is even a plot point, Sanji’s dream is to find the All Blue, the one point in the world where they mix
So the middle part of the streams through the red line?
@@choboibigly6565 Something like that, there’s supposed to be an actual part of the ocean where all the seas mix somewhere in the world, idk if that means there’s a break in the red line somewhere or what
and places like Gyiogin island that go under the red line , is possible that there are more places like that but doesnt have a full civilization living there because for Gyiogin island is only posible because of the grove trees in sabaody
@@choboibigly6565There are theories about the Red Line and Grand Line being unnatural forms of landscape, so destroying them will create the All Blue
@@GoldenCHRI don't think that's the case
1. The all blue is rumored to be an already existing place

I’m surprised that Matpat didn’t bring up the fact that the world of One Piece has been calculated to be 2.7 times the size of earth.
So how is it calculated?
theres a lot of inconsistencies when trying to work out the size of the one piece planet. ive seen calculations done that place it at: 2-3x the size; 10x the size, and at the extremes, either 3,000x the size, or 0.0015x the size
0.0015 is the only one i remember the reasoning for, i think the first time the sunny used coup de burst, they flew 1km away, and there wasnt anything in sight from before they used it, indicating that the horizon on the planet is at most 1km away, (a planet with a 1km horizon would have a radius of roughly 10km, unlike earths 6,000km)
i think the general consensus though, is that the one piece world is somewhat bigger than earth, just not know how much bigger
Please re-do the analysis with consideration that the grandline is not over the equator but actually at an angle as mentioned by Law somewhere around chapter 1000. It would be super interesting to see if the world would be more livable at least climate-wise. Love your videos!!!
Also One PIece's planet is larger than Earth and has deep sea currents to help transport water between quadrants.
Yea he clickbaited and he hasnt gotten enough knowledge yet
You're forgetting a crucial detail, there, MatPat! It's true that the mountains in California cast a rain shadow over the regions to the east, but that region is almost entirely dry land. If the world of One Piece is 90% water, then most of the area affected by the 'rain shadow' will be ocean. Almost all rain that falls on land starts in the ocean. While the area won't be receiving moisture from the west, it will have its own ocean to contribute moisture to the air.
Was going to bring this up - every planet is basically its own micro continent
Moreover the dirn of wind assumed by matpat is wrong as he assumed grandline at equator but rather ints in middle of East and West blue so the wind from middle of West blue will hit the middle of East blue changing
Growing up is realizing MatPat is an idiot who has no idea what he's talking about in like 99% of his videos. Dunning-Kreuger effect at its finest.
Honestly, this point is really weak... Does he really believe all the moisture would be trapped on the eastern half of the island. As if the west wouldn't have it's own wind and ocean currents. Like you said only planets in the vicinity of the red line would face this issue. Not even taking into account that areas in the grand line would probably have ways around this do to it's wacky weather system.
also the limited range of this effect regardless. seems like a huge stretch.
This would mean that rain is there only source of fresh water and that there isn't much (otherwise rivers and lakes would have formed, allowing them to be more independent from rain)
Also, Alabasta is literally thousands of kilometers away from any other island and yet replenishing the country in water would need require to dry up the sky enough to cause droughts to those same neighboring countries that are thousands of kilometers away.
But I don't think it was mentioned other than in this arc.
@@Cipher_Paul The drought was artificially created

1) The OP world is significantly larger than Earth, there's videos you can find where people have done the calcs (shout out Tekking101).
2) The Red Line & Grand Line intersect at a 45 degree angle (forming an "X" on the planet) as opposed to N-S then E-W.

In Episode 56, a fisherman tells Sanji that the currents from other seas bring fish from all seas to Loguetown in the East Blue, explaining why there are so many of a particularly rare species. So according to the show, all of the seas are connecting more than we think

3 times larger in diameter/radius, surface area, or volume?
@@niello5944
Not really
Bc the great lone would be up to scale with the rest of the world and is stated that there is no wind in the Great Calm the wind is still being blocked
Note: the rain shadow effect won't happen to every island since all the islands in one piece is almost surrounded by water, which means almost every island is getting moisture air and so all islands in one piece is lush green as shown in the series

Thank you. I think this is definitely what needs to be said. I hope more people see your comment.

@primeyoriichi
Did you forgot about the Red line, Wano Geand Line, New World?
Instead it was just "if One Piece was at all realistic" shade :(
Don't forget IT'S JUST A THEORY A FILM THEORY!
He definitely did. It's been throughout the entire series.
Course the drought was artificially created, but I get your point
The drought was caused by crocodile.
Some notes:
1. Something that breaks this further is that the one piece world has been calculated to be 84% the size of our sun, meaning gravity would be extremely strong
2. All islands would receive moisture from the surrounding bodies of water, unlike the region of the United Sates which is completely blocked by mountains
3. Definitely watch One Piece. In the beginning, the number of episodes is daunting, but at the end you'll wish there were twice as many episodes (it is still going by the way at a rate of an episode every week, sometimes every 2.

The researchers dropped the ball on this ep. While yes the one piece island world would be a problem for earth sized planet, the one piece world is actually much more massive meaning these “small” islands would have enough water
Exactly
One thing to point out is that most island are about a few days away from the the redline so they really wouldn't get the rain shadow affected. Plus each ocean has a different air and water current kind of rotating within there own ocean
But the Red Line is immensely tall. Like the Olympus Mons on Mars.

Actually as a One Piece Theorist I support this idea. Even this world is based from a world that's not rotating, I can't possibly forget Roger's goal and quotation "Turn The World Upside Down" become literally true after the series end.
what series end though? One piece is still being produced, it's no where near finished.
I think they only did their research on the east blue arc since that's what Netflix is adapting.
Your close but them being able to jump on air is actually them kicking their feet at supersonic speeds to get that jump
Interesting!
in real life you could "step" on air, so long as you kick hard enough, which is what they're doing, just kicking really hard.
I mean the world itself has several moons and it's so close too

Wow, the Theorist Team must have spend a lot of time on this (simply because 1000+ episodes). Good on them! And interesting question to ask!
Yea a fair lot of the information the Theorist Team had is... inaccurate.

Matt walked into this one himself. The info dump and corrections are astounding. I was going to info dump myself and correct a few things myself, but if I did that it would be several novels long. I decided not to do it, since most of the comments handle it.

The food can be solved by fishing, the fresh water can be solved by using those simple survival ways/tools or something similar in a largeer scale, it would be easy especially in the islands that only has like one village (i think nami's and usop's islands can be like that), the largest of islands would be like a city, and I think every large island we saw has a complex ecosystem that can help the people survive, like animals, lakes, deap water(i imagine alabasta has those considering it's a desert), plus with a lot of people the islands can more easily thrive to make, invent, and help make their lives easier and have more comfortable live and a bigger possibility to live a survivable easy life, moreover there are talented people in one piece like vegapank and franky and all the water seven people, the water seven itself is a huge artificial island, sanji's dad, the doctor that was in gecko morya's island the adopted father of chopper and his adopted mother,(I don't remember the names), and (spoiler for those who doesn't read the manga)

I think Jolly Rodger is what all pirate flags are called....
The live action version actually worked pretty well.
If one show could pull off a crazy cheesy campy live action remake it's one piece. Though the budget it had and the fact a lot of people working on it also adore the show/manga and definitely helped make it good.
It was awful, cut out a ton of scenes and changed plot point for no real reason.
@@clarence3238 The reason is to make it more concise and functional with in the length and frame work of a single season. An adaptation should not attempt to be a one-to-one recreation of the source material as there are certain things that work well in one medium that don't in another.

But 4kids has a nice theme song

Spoiler Alert:
So, there's an weapon that can destroy entire islands so efficiently that wipes them off the map, quite literally, living a massive hole in the ocean that, for some unexplained reason, makes all ocean levels rise on other islands (still couldn't wrap my head around that).
