To a degree, yes. Those who haven't read the manga's ending yet, *SPOILER WARNING* MatPat mentioned here that it's an AI that was responsible for the stonification of humanity in Dr. Stone. Throughout the story, it shows the source of the 'green light' we call the Medusa. It somewhat resembles a ring, but it has an irregular shape. Shortly after its introduction, it was shown that a number of those had fallen onto an island from the sky, all lit green turning every island inhabitant into stone, and the source of that transmission was from the moon, of all places. Later on, upon reaching the moon, they find the one place "Why Man" was hiding. But it was in fact a whole colony of Medusas, that were discovered to actually be a techno-organic parasite species. While they behave in perfect sync with each other, they're not really connected to a hive mind because they decide on things for themselves. To sum it up, yes. it was never confirmed what the stone shell is, or at least what it is that turns them into stone. We only learned that there are those sentient medusa robots which release this green light.
Matt: The only reason an outer layer of stone falls off is because something is being expelled from the body and flaking off. Senkuu in the last episode: The outer layer falls off because it's too corroded to be restored. Other than that, good stuff.
@ The layer that falls off is far too thick for that. The amount of dead skin you having covering your body at any one time is miniscule as well, so this hypothesis is highly unlikely and that's being generous
@ For the simple fact that dead skin is constantly rubbed off to reveal living skin, that statement is patently false. The stone doesn't react with water. It can be eroded over a long period of time though, which is why the outer layer has to fall off due to not being in a revivable condition after so long.

Mat was right to an extent that some extraterrestrial entity was responsible for humanity's downfall.

To make a ship to sail to the source of the petrification, Senku needs oil. To find oil he makes a hot air balloon to find an oil field in Japan. While looking for oil they find goats and whole fields of wheat that's growing wildly. So they bring enough back to start farming wheat to make bread as a good food that'll last for months on end on the ship while traveling the earth.
So yes, Senku does indeed invent air superiority before farming.

@@natied5849 Something similar was mentioned in the last chapter, but Senku mentioned exactly what Chaotix said in the last episode too.
@@belpy4624 Oh hahaha, in that case, my bad
@ The layer that falls off is far too thick for that. The amount of dead skin you having covering your body at any one time is miniscule as well, so this hypothesis is highly unlikely and that's being generous
@ For the simple fact that dead skin is constantly rubbed off to reveal living skin, that statement is patently false.
The stone doesn't react with water. It can be eroded over a long period of time though, which is why the outer layer has to fall off due to not being in a revivable condition after so long.
