I actually think Scream And Shout is better than Hashtag-thatPOWER. Probably because I heard Bart Baker's parody first and thought "Dang, this beat and chorus is really catchy...!" And that's the thing about the Black Eyed Peas: their lyrics suck, but their songs are inescapably ear-wormy. Hashtag-thatPOWER, though, is just downright boring. It doesn't even have the catchy chord progression that Scream And Shout's chorus did.
Dreigonix "Scream and Shout" also has an utterly bizarre song structure (including an inexplicable progressive house breakdown) which makes it fascinatingly bad rather than simply obnoxious and bland.
At 17:30 you ask "Who the hell has diamond-plated tailgates anyway?" Just to clarify that a bit Luke Bryan is not referring to covering his truck's tailgate in diamonds, rather he is referring to diamond plate (a type of metal plate that is used in many pick-up trucks for it's durability). I just wanted to make that clear. I'm not a fan of that particular song either and I actually agree with most of your list. I also find your reviews to be highly entertaining and look forward to the 2014 list.
My list: 1. Love Me 2. U.O.E.N.O. 3. We Can't Stop 4. Started from the Bottom 5. F**king Problems 6. Blurred Lines 7. I'm Different 8. Bugatti 9. Beauty and a Beat 10. Blurred Lines Dishonorable Mentions: 23 Wrecking Ball Come and Get It I Knew You WereTrouble

I think the problem with IKYWT is the fact that Taylor never even explained WHY she went out with the guy even though she knew he was trouble to begin with. She doesn't really give out a good reason to why she did it or what caused her to even hook up with him.
+Ryan rogerson 1) You completely missed the reference, so please GTFO and back to your safe space on tumblr. 2) To use the overused meme: you must be fun at parties.
Ryan rogerson You need to let Todd explain. And I WILL use the term 'black guy'. And I never said acoustic guitar songs are bad. And I also never said acoustic guitar songs are bad. They can be great. But like Todd said, it's a generalization, a stereotype. They usually suck. Who are you to judge my taste in music. What I listen to is FAR from bubblegum pop. And I feel INSULTED that you refuse to call me a music fan. Anybody that calls themselves a music fan, should be considered one. You don't know what I listen to, you can't judge me at the moment. And if I seem 'racist' then, it's because you don't get the reference. That Dragica guy, he knows. He doesn't think I'm racist. Because I'm not. But, I hate that you have classified me as a 'fake bubblegum pop' person. I hate that. Get to know before you judge. Besides, music is all opinions. It's fine that you like acoustic music. I understand why you do. Just, let me have my opinion. What I said, was a joke/reference for anybody else that watches Todd. Get context before you comment.
+ToastMistWin (not that it matters, but I'm a girl, obviously my pic doesn't show it, though xD) Chill, Toast. Ryan was just looking for a reason to get offended, some people have the need to do that. Ryan, check out Todd in the Shadows. I think he was the inspiration of many youtube music critics including Spectrum, and I think you will find him rather entertaining, if nothing else. You will also probably see the context and understand it better.
Passenger's Let Her Go was about himself, not a friend. He was saying that if she's leaving then he needs to get her to leave because he truly loves her. It wasn't emo at all it was about himself and how that in the end whatever someone does to try to not let her go, it won't work "everything you touch only dies" meaning "anything you say won't mean a thing". Also, this song came out in 2012, not 2013.Not quite sure if you said that later, but UA-cam froze the video -.-. Anyway, I think you took the song the wrong way, but that's understandable, it took me awhile to get it. I like the list overall I just had to point this out.
Well many songs can be interpreted differently. I don't think it's emo it's more from a sad point. Sure he says "you" but I find it to be a message to everyone about how if you love something you should let it go if you love it enough. Yes, it's overdone, but they perspective is the exact reason I like this song. It's like the aftermath, not some person telling you to do it that has no experience in the subject. But to each their own I guess, I like the song and that's all that matters for myself and you don't and that's your opinion so I can respect that.
You know, watching him say that he liked Drake at this point and saying he's "capable of so much better" looks funny, because a bit over a year later, we got If You're Reading This It's Too Late. Then there was more Drake, with Hotline Bling, and the Meek Mill beef with Back to Back, among others, and that was before What A Time To Be Alive. And now...not only did we get the continued Meek Mill beef name of Summer Sixteen, but now there's Views, which is indication that Drake didn't do better. And it shows, because this poor guy is so sick of Drake today. Makes this look funny.
Hey, if anyone gets this message, I’m from 3 years in the future, and it gets _so much worse._ Pusha T reveals that Drake has a secret son with a porn star, and in response, Drake makes a song bitching about how much he hates having to pay child support, and how he hates women _so much_ that he’s proud of his own dad refusing to pay his mom child support.

I don't hate started from the bottom because it's a bad song. I hate it because of what it represents. I look to it as the song that made Drake go "Hey, this horrible, lazy piece of dogshit got popular, why not make that my signature style?"
I think I'm gonna see what U.O.E.N.O. is all about now. So far, the worst I've listened to from 2013 was Karate Chop, which also had its controversy in which someone got dropped from their label.
+Cobolorum Can't believe it took till now for me to see this comment, but I never mentioned that Future was the one that got dropped. I only mentioned that someone was dropped to make a comparison. I know it was Wayne who got dropped because of that line, and I know it was Rick Ross who lost his label due to his controversial line in U.O.E.N.O. :P But anywho, I've listened to both songs and both of them are 2 of the worst songs I have ever listened to.
Plus I agree with your stance on Taylor Swift alot of the songs of Red and especially the ones played on the radio have strayed far from her original message as an artist
"You" is used frequently in the plural sense, encompassing the general public and their common happenings when said by people from the U.K. and Australia. Passenger's "Let Her Go" is a critical analysis of one's self and how your own actions can be detrimental to a relationship. I know this type of *ambiguos language isn't used in the U.S.A, but Australian's at least know about American language characteristics as well as their own.
Lol that has some of her best songs. State Of Grace, Holy Ground and All Too Well are amazing songs. It just sucks that the singles suck with the exception of Begin Again that wasn’t that popular just because it was country. 1989 was a better album though and then she made folklore and Evermore which are amazing!
Wow... I've been watching you for three or four years now, and I'm just realizing that you wear black when talking about the worst, and white when talking about the best...
OK, while I also *loathe* "That Kind of Night" (it's at #9 on my personal worst of the year list), WRT the question, "Who the hell has diamond-plated tailgates anyway?" this has absolutely nothing to do with the gemstone. Diamond plate is also known as checker plate or tread plate, and is a metal pattern used to either provide grip on certain surfaces like a tailgate, or, in a shinier form, simply as a decoration. It is so named as the tread pattern is roughly diamond-like. Good list, btw. The only song on I can actually tolerate to any degree is "Trouble". I don't seek it out, and can't say I'm a fan, but it doesn't make my skin crawl or want to tear out my ears, so I can't hate on it that much. I also rather liked your top 10 list, which also has a large overlap with my own. Really glad to see "Carry On" there, which was my fav of the year.
im suprise he didnt add Karate Chop by Future and lil wayne that had that other controversial line Beat it up like Emmet Till man that was a bad choice of words and that my friend is a good exsample how rapping off your head with no writing can go wrong badly
I have to COMPLETELY disagree with what you said about Taylor's 2 songs on the dishonourable mention : "22" & '"I knew you were trouble". 22; Taylor is FAR from Ke$ha, it same goes for the song. Let's compare 22 to Ke$ha's "CMON". They are both party songs, but 22 LACKS ALOT OF SEX Appeal compared to Ke$ha. The song was simply about having a nice girl's night out. I don't see why this leads to hooking up? "Tonight's the night when we forget about the deadlines, it's time". It's about having fun. Is Taylor steps out of her mediocre songwriting that people complain about and writes a FUN POP song, She's possibly HOOKING Up with a guy? The SONG [Even with the music video] IS CLEARLY ABOUT HAVING FUN WITH YOUR FRIENDS. Ffs. The song doesn't have lines like "Don't even try to deny, we're both going home satisfied". I think the lyrics about dressing up like hipsters etc. are playful and fun lyrics WITHOUT DEEP MEANINGS. I mean, it's a party song, who's gonna pay much attention to the lyrics? Trouble; The is about being betrayed and feeling sad. There's even a CHAOTIC feel to the MV. The Goat Remix? So you were rather hear a fucking goat scream than hear her falsetto? A little exggeration. YES! Taylor KNEW He was trouble, she even said it in MULTIPLE interviews about the song. I believe the next line goes 'SHAME ON ME NOW'. She's NOT Wrong for venturing into Dubstep etc. Espescislly considering the fact that her album was a mix of GENRES. Yet, it SOLD 1.2 Mil in the first week. "Trouble'" [Though off her country roots] Sold alot too. Quoting from Taylor at the starting speach of I knew you were trouble "I think a part of me knew the second I saw him that this would happen.." "How can the devil be pulling you towards someone who looks so much like an angel...", THE RED FLAGS WERE UP. She went for it anyways, as human we do it all the time. And we find ourselves in this chaotic, betrayed and sad lonely mental state of mind. THAT IS THE SONG'S MOTIVE. THAT IS HER LYRICAL INTERPRETATION.
@@Connorslamevideos I know this was written 8 years ago when it was cool to hate on Taylor Swift but like, she had a song that was also released around that time called Ronan which is literally about a 4 year old child dying as well as some deep cuts with deeper lyrics. Not to mention what she’ll do later in her life with folklore and evermore. God this comment is just so funny to me
In retrospect... I'd have to call 2013 the worst year for mainstream rap ever. The bad stuff was even worse than usual, and it all ended up charting pretty damn high. If it wasn't for Eminem and Macklemore pretty much carrying mainstream rap all by themselves, the year would've been a complete waste.
I like the lyrics of Let Her Go because I view them as describing your pain like, "Do you every feel like everything you touch surely dies?" Plus someone I took for granted died shortly after I found the song so I related to the feeling but the Tyler Ward version is superior in my opinion.
I only have TWO disagreements: I mean, I get where you were coming with Luke Bryan, but I just seem to like that song for some reason. I also get where you were coming from with Passenger, I mean, yeah, his voice is different, but the lyrics are nice. Sure, generic shit shows up now and then, but in the end, it's a pretty good song. Everything else was practically spot on.
Wow, I agree with some of these, but I strongly disagree with Pour it up, we can't stop, I knew you were trouble and mildly disagree with #thatpower, let her go and some others. I agree with your number one choice and harlem shake but I think you over looked Mike Will 's "23" (unless you actually like that song). I'd add Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber "Twerk" but I don't think that was a big enough hit to make your list. I think that some of these songs weren't intended to be deep, have a good message or be inspirational, but were made to feel the exact moment they're describing in the song. (Which a lot of these songs accurately does in my opinion). Plus, I believe the dreariness and mid tempo songs are a trend of 2013 to stay reverent, nothing wrong with that. (I'm surprised Selena Gomez or Jay Sean didn't make your list. I love Selena's "Come and Get it" song but you seem hate her.)
For I Knew You Were Trouble. I just wanna say that the whole point of the song is her explaining her stupidity. She says "she saw the red flag go up when she first saw him" but she went for anyway. She is saying blame on me why did I do this. And yes it does sound like a "train wreck" but I like that because it makes the song just as chaotic as she is trying to express is what the relationship felt like.
You are a little too pretentious I mean I don't think it's an intentional thing but you can be quite hard to follow at times especially when you get all excited and talk super fast
Naokomi I wasn't trying to be rude. I didn't mean to type that but then the part where I type froze and only the reply button worked so I just pressed it. And obviously people can do whatever they want on Christmas, I can't force everyone to be filled with the Christmas cheer.
You really nail the presentation. You have enthusiasm and zeal without excessive energy or bad acting; if you didn't slip up the diction occasionally due to the fast talking it would be perfect. I'm glad 'Let her go' made it - very glad. That sort of banal sentimentalism really aggravates me, especially when it masquerades as a profound emotional document.
I do have another interpretation of ‘Let Her Go’ that it’s not so much about a guy forcibly trying to convince someone to leave a relationship (looking at you Shawn Mendes), but more about unrequited love (I.e. if you really love her, then you’ll put her needs before your own and accept that you’re not right for each other). I can’t prove that is the actual meaning of the song, but I do kinda get that impression, especially as someone who’s been on both ends of unrequited love before.
Hahaha... remember back when people thought that maybe, just maybe, there was a slight possibility that Taylor Swift might be turning into a pop star?

abortion of titanic proportions damn that's good
No blurred lines?
That door handle is annoying me
I always figured the POV character of that Passenger song is just talking to himself in the second person.
I love how he looks completely different (and much better) yet his voice stills sounds EXACTLY the same.
Ahhhh, your Canadian well this stereotype-laden comment fell flat quickly. :D
Couldn't agree with you more on Taylor Swift. She sold out with Red
He looks like the skinny version of Trey Parker.
The Simple Plan reference had me near tears. CANADIAN JOKES!
Where’s Blurred Lines
We Can’t Stop should’ve been on the actual list
Uhhhh the door handle
Comment: I very much interpreted the "you" on Passenger's "Let Her Go" as a universal one, learning the truth through his own experience.
your hair has had a crazy journey.
I think that "We Can't Stop" might just be my least favorite song of all time.
1-800... is shaking
@ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED but still 1-800 is shaking also Gummo and SAD!
It’s funny seeing this after Sean is now covering 2013. Looking forward to part 2
4 years later, he was able to share his feelings about it. :)
The love me part had me liking so hard when he was saying the lyrics 😂
wow hip hop took a big negative hit in 13
Except for Kendrick, Kendrick basically carried the genre on his back that year
have you heard give it to you and fucking problems, even Kendrick had some terrible verses then.
and love game
Rocky was pretty solid that year tho
No, that’s 2014 and 2016
Wow... I've been watching you for three or four years now, and I'm just realizing that you wear black when talking about the worst, and white when talking about the best...
All the comments are defending Taylor so here I go. SHES TOO GOOD TO BE ON HERE
Love Me Is One Of The Worst Songs I’ve Ever Heard
Really glad to see "Carry On" there, which was my fav of the year.
im suprise he didnt add Karate Chop by Future and lil wayne that had that other controversial line Beat it up like Emmet Till man that was a bad choice of words and that my friend is a good exsample how rapping off your head with no writing can go wrong badly
phew if it did BET will reconsider thinking about having anything to do BTW and if others ask yes i am black and yes i made a BET joke lolz
Didn't make the year end chart. If it did he probably would.
what dose the fox say is digital puke
i used to hate we can't stop but i read a comment (don't remember what it was) that actually made sense and now its one of my favorites
THAT IS HER LYRICAL INTERPRETATION.
lol u make it sound like Taylor Swift's lyrics are deep and meaningful
@@Connorslamevideos I know this was written 8 years ago when it was cool to hate on Taylor Swift but like, she had a song that was also released around that time called Ronan which is literally about a 4 year old child dying as well as some deep cuts with deeper lyrics. Not to mention what she’ll do later in her life with folklore and evermore. God this comment is just so funny to me
Wow, there were a few utterly despicable hit songs this year.
Also, I hope you do a list of the best underrated songs of 2013. *cough* show me love by the wanted *cough*
Are you gonna do a top 10 songs / albums of 2013? Or a worst albums of 2013?
In retrospect... I'd have to call 2013 the worst year for mainstream rap ever. The bad stuff was even worse than usual, and it all ended up charting pretty damn high. If it wasn't for Eminem and Macklemore pretty much carrying mainstream rap all by themselves, the year would've been a complete waste.
And #willpower
Even though it wasn't as high as Em or Macklemore, Swimming Pools by Kendrick could be classified as good/great mainstream rap
+Bryan Rue That song's borderline. It just barely reached the top 20, so I guess I'd call it a minor hit.
***** Yeah, even though that song was good enough to reach number 1 if quality judged hits
Bryan Rue Or if K tried to spread it.
Everything else was practically spot on.
two albums on this list were 'based on a true story' :D
13:50 watching from 2023, which… half the hit songs last year were lazy samples… ye…
how did your hair lighten?
glad I don't listen to this type of music.. or the radio
....i just love you....
8:52 Check out Within Temptation's version of Let Her Go. It's way better than the original.
I do disagree with 7-5 because at least it has a pulse. Although I do respect your opinion, especially with love me putting it so high.
I love how even Spectrum Pulse's old videos don't seem dated in the slightest.
21:23 Those words will surely be repeated in two months, lol
For I Knew You Were Trouble. I just wanna say that the whole point of the song is her explaining her stupidity. She says "she saw the red flag go up when she first saw him" but she went for anyway. She is saying blame on me why did I do this. And yes it does sound like a "train wreck" but I like that because it makes the song just as chaotic as she is trying to express is what the relationship felt like.
white guys with acoustic guitars xD
Spectrum Pulse...Tracy Chapman is a woman. BAHAHAHAHAHA
Just curious, are you Influenced by a reviewer named toddintheshadows?
You are a little too pretentious I mean I don't think it's an intentional thing but you can be quite hard to follow at times especially when you get all excited and talk super fast
I wish Mark had wore his meme costume when he reviewed The fox.
I did a video kind of like this. YOu uploaded this on Christmas? Sheesh!
ruuuuude. people can do whatever they want on Christmas, including not spend all 24 hours of it with family.
Naokomi I wasn't trying to be rude. I didn't mean to type that but then the part where I type froze and only the reply button worked so I just pressed it. And obviously people can do whatever they want on Christmas, I can't force everyone to be filled with the Christmas cheer.
I'll admit it, I simply adore Boys Round Here for how silly and ridiculous it is.
I also didn't like "Let her go".
You really nail the presentation. You have enthusiasm and zeal without excessive energy or bad acting; if you didn't slip up the diction occasionally due to the fast talking it would be perfect. I'm glad 'Let her go' made it - very glad. That sort of banal sentimentalism really aggravates me, especially when it masquerades as a profound emotional document.
usually people don't spend this much time covering their DISHONORABLE mentions!
I'm norwegian and even I'm not a big fan of the fox. I feel ya Mark, its not that great of asong.
I love feel this moment D:
XenoCG I like this list and I disagree as well cause it’s pretty fun so don’t feel bad for enjoying it,instead use it to be better
THANK GOD BOYS ROUND HERE AND THATS MY KIND OF NIGHT ARE ON THIS LIST! YOU SIR DESERVE A MEDAL!
GREAT LIST[:
I find it funny that the Blake Shelton song is basically bro country origins
I do have another interpretation of ‘Let Her Go’ that it’s not so much about a guy forcibly trying to convince someone to leave a relationship (looking at you Shawn Mendes), but more about unrequited love (I.e. if you really love her, then you’ll put her needs before your own and accept that you’re not right for each other).
I can’t prove that is the actual meaning of the song, but I do kinda get that impression, especially as someone who’s been on both ends of unrequited love before.
