Gotta hard disagree on the PC Music shade but I do understand it. Also I will defend "Pumped Up Kicks" as a particularly dark and wry little joke song with a special place in my black and withered heart but, again, I get your issues here.
Hey, finally a 2011 list. Okay, so this means we’re getting the best of 2011 before the year ends, right? We gotta talk about my favorite songs from my favorite year of the 2010s before the decade ends
17:30 PREACH! Seriously, though, The Other Side is up there with Versace On The Floor as the best song of Bruno's career, and, yes, had it been pushed as a single, it would've been a massive hit, considering how huge all three artists were at the time.
When Mark tore into Hot Chelle Rae, I thought he would say that the song is basically a bad Family Guy joke, but he saved that reference for “Sexy and I Know It.”
"Dishonorable Mention: Foster the People's Pumped Up Kicks" The hatred is a bit unearned, I think. A happy sounding song having depressing lyrics isn't reason enough to hate a song or else Paramore's Hard Times would be the worst song of 2017. As for the song's message, I'm not sure the song was trying to have a message. Foster said he normally writes the chorus first and then the rest of the song around it. Originally, the gun was supposed to be a metaphor for something instead of an actual gun. What message or commentary would a song about school shooters have, anyway? No sane person would write a song about school shooters where the message is "I endorse school shooters." There's an Elton John song called Ticking that recounts the events of a mass shooting as if he's talking directly to the shooter in a way that's neither supportive nor judgmental. There's no message or commentary beyond that and yet I consider it one of his most underrated songs. Just saying, maybe you're expecting something from Pumped Up Kicks different from what it was trying to achieve.
For me, Pumped Up Kicks has an interesting concept, but it seems to raise too many questions that it likely wasn't prepared to answer. But okay, let's start off with this: if you're writing a song from the perspective of a school shooter without any commentary, how would you go about it? Would it just be a story of 'I came, I shot, I left?' Or would there be more to it?
2011 was basically the 1991 of the 2010s, a transitional year for music with many changes. Only difference is that the music was a lot less influential in the former year. PS, I'm surprised you hated "Pumped Up Kicks" by FTP. I thought it was a cool song when I first heard it. Well at least you gave out legit criticism towards the song, so I can't flame you there.
OMG I listened to the radio almost every day in 2011 and #1 played AT LEAST three times an hour. I ended up memorizing all the lyrics and I hated it so much. I still hate it today. Why didn't I ever change the channel?!
Half these songs were my jam when I was 15 (ET without Kanye's verse, The Lazy Song, Pretty Girl Rock, Rocketeer) and I think they still hold up today. Some of these other songs I've either forgotten their existence or were some of the worst of its time
I feel your pain. Pretty Girl Rock still holds up for me but my name is Kerry so I’m kind of biased here 😂 The read not so much. If the songs hold up for you don’t be ashamed, like what songs you want to!
I had never heard of "Dirt Road Anthem" (#10), "Look at Me Now" (#9)", "Don't Wanna Go Home" (#7), "Backseat" (#5), "Pretty Girl Rock" (DM3), "How to Love" (DM4), or "Crazy Girl" (DM5) until now.
There is so much material for a Worst of 2009 list. Pop Champagne, Every Girl, Whatcha Say (I don't really mind that song, but I get the hate for it), there are so many awful songs from 2009 to choose from.
@@gabingston3430 Don't forget about Break Up, Diva, Don't Trust Me, Obsessed, Hotel Room Service, Turn My Swag On, Birthday Sex and If I Were A Boy (just for the sexism)...
Great video. My only real disagreements are E.T, which I find to be a decent banger, and then the placements of The Time and Lighters, which I'd easily swap. Lighters is just boring, The Time is atrocious. Oh and also the lack of Luke Bryan. My list: 1. The Time (Dirty Bit) - The Black Eyed Peas 2. Sexy And I Know It - LMFAO 3. Backseat - New Boyz ft. Okay, first I recommend you to only include one song per entry and second, can you give me individual rankings of each track listed here? Because I don’t want this to look like you hate the year. And third, while I’m SUPER happy that neither The Time (Dirty Bit) nor Just Can’t Get Enough are on here (both are songs that I will forever defend), I am dissatisfied with Don’t Wanna Go Home, all three Britney Spears year-end singles (though I Wanna Go is one I can see being mentioned here), Perfect, Rocketeer, Written In The Stars, Who Says (why on earth are there people who dislike this song to begin with?), and Please Don’t Go mentioned here (I could say the same with Backseat, which I honestly give an 8/10 to, but at least I can understand it being here and its 2012 rerelease is atrocious).

I might end up missing the premiere tomorrow (trip to grandma's house), but man, I CALLED LMFAO being on the thumbnail. Can't wait for Mark to tear into 'Sexy and I Know It'! Seriously, when I first read the original blog version of the Worst of 2012 list, I refused to believe he hates (or hated) that song less than Jason Derulo's 'Don't Wanna Go Home'. Heck, I think I still do. I remember parts of that list where Mark would mention the duo and/or that song with disdain. Right now, the only reason I see someone not liking 'Don't Wanna Go Home' is because of the sample, but hey; we'll find out tomorrow.
Lighters isn't the worst song on any any list. But it is somehow one of the most disappointing songs I think I have ever heard. Three great ideas meshed so sloppily together to make an unlistenable song
First, *Fucking and *Ass. Second, while LMFAO stands for Laughing My Fucking Ass Off in text form, in the case of Redfoo and SkyBlu, it just means LMFAO.
I'm not going to argue with many of these. Many of them I even forgot existed. But I will say that "Tonight, Tonight" and "Sexy and I Know It" are guilty pleasures. Also, and I have to be careful with this one, but I also like "E.T.," as long as it's the original and NOT the version with Kanye, because his part is absolutely atrocious.
So, we'll get to hear why Mark hates Don't Wanna Go Home so much. It's a perfectly fine club song IMO (total ripoff of DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love, but considering how awesome that song is, it's not much of a bad thing). You could get upset at the interpolation, but I don't really know the original song, so...

Once again, another person who doesn’t like Who Says, and further, while I’m sure most of these entries could be due to bad memories or bias against a given musical artist, why did you have to bring up twenty year-end list DHMs? Now, I will say this: a bunch of these tracks do deserve to be disliked, but why is there no Dirt Road Anthem, which is an under-hated bro-country hit that probably should’ve never seen the light of day? I kind of want to know if some of these choices are now inaccurate to the you of today because I can’t stand some of these being on here.
Im really glad Mark shares a bit of similarity with my own beliefs regarding the quality of this year. I always perceived it as potentionally the best of the decade for not really having any bad songs in my eyes. Maybe 3-4 I outright dislike but nothing to cry over.... but after looking at that year end list again I couldnt really find that many highs besides adeles contributions and so much of it was kinda forgettable. Still a strong year by virtue of lacking bad songs imo.
Someone in the chat mentioned that no one involved in Backseat got work ever again... which isn't exactly true. KSHMR, one half of The Cataracs, has gotten a pretty consistent line of work in the Spinnin' Records crew, especially in 2016 and 2017.
Hell yeah, I enjoy KSHMR quite a bit. It just baffles me that he's the same guy who produced crap like "Like a G6", or "Backseat", or Enrique's flop single "I'm a Freak".

@Spectrum Pulse You think Sexy and I Know It was bad for you? Imagine being in fifth grade when this song was popular and everybody's parents were having "the talk" with them. Absolute nightmare. I had to do a singing routine for cub scouts and OF COURSE the other kids my age chose Sexy And I Know It.
2011 was during the near end of my high school career but the year I listened to the radio the most. Though while I liked this year, there were plenty of crap. I think the song I disliked the most that I heard this year was probably I'm Sexy and I know it while my biggest guilty pleasure of the year would be the Jason Aldean song (I am kind of a sucker for brocountry that isn't anything done by Florida Geogria Line).
Well get this: Dirt Road Anthem is my least-favorite song of this year-end and one I think is under-hated. In no way is it a guilty pleasure to me. You want to know what is? Backseat by New Boyz ft. The Cataracs & Dev
I love Pumped Up Kicks. The tonal dissonance is intentional and a juxtaposition of childhood innocence and violence. The fact it's an up tempo song about school shootings kinda has a punky irony for me
Well, this is what I and several others consider to be the best year of the 2010s decade for Billboard and I recommend you watch some videos talking about the best that this year had to offer.
I agree with the number one pick. Nothing worse than a boring song, especially considering how talented Eminem and Bruno Mars are in their own genres. Sexy and I know it hit so bad it’s good territory for me years ago, still does. In 2011 that Enrique Iglesias song creeped me out, and as a woman in her twenties now that opinion still holds up I’m afraid. Something sinister about it in an not fun way. Great list as usual Mark!
The saddest part about Dirt Road Anthem being a Jason Aldean hit in 2011, is that Brantley Gilbert recorded it in 2010 and Colt Ford recorded it in 2008.
Pumped Up Kicks (which I rank a 4.8/10) is to you as Just Can’t Get Enough is to me (I probably love it more than anyone else on this planet and may be the only person putting it in my positively exceptional subtier of my Excellent Tier).
He's just finished talking about #2, and there are ten minutes left in the video... Either there will be a lot of dishonorable mentions, or #1 will be one hell of a doozy.
@@RiverOfWetness468 ngl, after seeing people put Lighters on their worst lists, particularly Mark here and Fi(o)nn/The Social Tune, the song went from one I used to like to one I nowadays think is bad. It’s honestly a weird pick for a #1 worst hit of 2011, but I can see why it could be one. Now what if I were to tell you that my (current) worst hit of 2011 was Dirt Road Anthem? (Sexy And I Know It, Pretty Girl Rock, and She Ain’t You are runners-up for second-worst, third-worst, and fourth-worst at the moment).
Wow I like Pumped Up Kick and could care less about ET, but you have really good arguments against it that it actually is starting to change my opinion.
I don't think your Crazy Girl comparison to Beautiful Crazy (I assume that's what you were talking about) is fair. There is nothing in Beautiful Crazy about "loving her back into line", it's the opposite in fact "her crazy's beautiful to me". Beautiful Crazy is a great song and it will be very high on my best list for 2019.
I disagree about The Lazy Song. It's not perfect, but I like the cheesy, relaxed, mellow vibe, and as Todd In The Shadow put it, we need a song dedicated to the times when we feel lazy, when we don't want to do anything and just relaxed. Is it Bruno's best song? Of course not. But I'd definitely say it's one of his good songs.
I agree with almost all of the picks here... and as for the one dishonorable mention where I had a knee-jerk reaction, I realized that you were right in that "Pumped Up Kicks" has aged horribly. Still surprised that "Grenade" didn't show up at all.
I still never thought Lighters was THAT bad. The worst song off that EP, sure. But I'd say it's more of a 4/10, maybe 5/10. I'm a bit surprised it sees so much hatred to be honest.
Do you actually read these? Just curious, good list, your intro to #2 was perfectly done 10: Please Don't Go 9: Dirt Road Anthem 8: Sexy And I Know It 7: Tonight Tonight 6: Country Girl Shake It For Me 5: Look At Me Now 4: Jar Of Hearts 3: Pretty Girl Rock 2: Grenade 1: Tonight I'm Fucking You DM's Motivation You And I Who Says I Need A Doctor The Time (Dirty Bit) Just A Kiss The Lazy Song Lighters sucks too can't really say I disagree with that as the top pick it gets barely left off the list because there's somewhat of a decent melody on the chorus ("Right where we should be" is a pretty solid melodic phrase) but wow those verses are slogs
I’m with you on Jar of Hearts, did not age well for me in the slightest and it was overplayed. Luke Bryan can be so hit or miss, he has an equal amount of good and horrible songs. Country girl hits the horrible category like a bullseye on a dart board.
@@kkskilletfan66The Social Tune’s brief explanation of Jar of Hearts (plus me realizing its musical dullness more) helped me properly dislike it. Edit: And this person also thought You And I and Motivation were that bad? Well, opinions are opinions, even if they’re not necessarily ones most will agree on. I at least appreciate that neither Backseat nor Just Can’t Get Enough are mentioned here.
I like Tonight Tonight too. Whether or not you take issue with the way they got popular, Hot Chelle Rae had some really catchy songs. It was also just nice having a pop-rock song on the radio during the club boom.
@@KatieHopcraft I will still dislike Tonight Tonight but I’m always defending Just Can’t Get Enough and probably love it more than any other person. It’s absolutely going on my Top 50 Hit Songs of the 2010s, maybe even in the Top 25.

No, that was a Simpsons reference,he in fact mentioned Sideshow Bob by name in the most unflattering way imaginable
"Dishonorable Mention: Foster the People's Pumped Up Kicks"
The hatred is a bit unearned, I think.
That wasn't his only reason...
@@hiimemily I know, but that's the reason he talks about the most.
Yeah Pumped up the kicks is a great song
For me, Pumped Up Kicks has an interesting concept, but it seems to raise too many questions that it likely wasn't prepared to answer. But okay, let's start off with this: if you're writing a song from the perspective of a school shooter without any commentary, how would you go about it? Would it just be a story of 'I came, I shot, I left?' Or would there be more to it?
@@mikeatthepiano6067 'I came, I shot, The cops shot me, I went to hell'
"shot it in the crib" is my favorite phrase I've heard in a long time. I was drinking and almost did a spit take.
then "Kanye wants to put his foot in her vagina" you're killing me in this video, Mark!
I completely forgot the song Lighters existed. Goddamn I hated it back then and it sounds even worse now.
Something I've wondered for a while, why do you put the honorable mentions before number 1 on retro lists, but number 10 on modern lists?
I have been wondering the exact same thing. It seemed a bit jarring the first time due to going against his standard formula.
I had never heard of "Dirt Road Anthem" (#10), "Look at Me Now" (#9)", "Don't Wanna Go Home" (#7), "Backseat" (#5), "Pretty Girl Rock" (DM3), "How to Love" (DM4), or "Crazy Girl" (DM5) until now.
Lol pumped up kicks was good cause people thought it was an upbeat song till they found out it was about school shooter.
That’s retarded, Pumped Up Kicks is amazing either way

Well, he was on a remix that got little-to-no promotion.

Puns intended, lol.
I wish he would do a worst of 2009 list first since he seems to really like that year. But I still can't wait for this one!
There is so much material for a Worst of 2009 list. Pop Champagne, Every Girl, Whatcha Say (I don't really mind that song, but I get the hate for it), there are so many awful songs from 2009 to choose from.

Great video. My only real disagreements are E.T, which I find to be a decent banger, and then the placements of The Time and Lighters, which I'd easily swap. Lighters is just boring, The Time is atrocious. Oh and also the lack of Luke Bryan.

@@Thesportsmusicgodwell, Sexy And I Know It is on this worst list, and I recommend also telling OP that.

Lighters isn't the worst song on any any list.
But it is somehow one of the most disappointing songs I think I have ever heard. Three great ideas meshed so sloppily together to make an unlistenable song
Its one of the best eminem has made because of Brunos feature.
Looking forward to seeing Mark demolish that one song by Laughing My F****** A** Off into smithereens.
That Sexy and I Know It song.
First, *Fucking and *Ass.
Second, while LMFAO stands for Laughing My Fucking Ass Off in text form, in the case of Redfoo and SkyBlu, it just means LMFAO.

I've never seen a man get so mad at a mainstream pop song before, LMAO.
I think Todd in the Shadows got angrier than Mark.

Going solo was the best thing that happened to KSHMR

The fact it's an up tempo song about school shootings kinda has a punky irony for me
And people who think that are wrong anyway. It’s not about a school shooting. It’s about fantasizing about people being afraid of him

I disagree with a lot of his picks, but he can descriptively describe a song he doesn’t like and gives good reasoning to why
