  • This Volvo has had all the plugs and coils replaced by another shop and the car still misfires consistently on number 6 cylinder. Problem only lasts 90 to 120 seconds and never on a warm restart. Video shows the challenges encountered trying to diagnose this issue. Now it seems to have fixed itself. Ill update on the status as soon as I can...

Exact same issue in the same year and model (my wife’s car, which is also Polestar). Started doing this about a month ago. Expert Volvo mechanic in town stumped, so you’re in good company. He’s currently hypothesizing a sticking valve-I don’t know if he checked all the things you show so well here-but wife needs it and runs fine, just like yours, after a minute or two. We’ll continue to monitor. Otherwise, this has been a spectacular vehicle.

What's the deal with these Volvos and cylinder 6 misfiring???? I've been working on a 09 S80 3.2l and can't seem to get this issue fixed,, I'm thinking maybe a software problem because it's not a plug, coil, injector and has compression, so what's left??? HELP

    • @PhillipBailey

Good compression is inconclusive as a poorly sealing valve may pass a compression test. Could be carbon on valves, injector with poor spray pattern, injector or coil driver in the ECM. For what it's worth I never fixed this one.

I needed to replace #5 fuel injector so I went ahead and bought all 6. I got them from volvo. My question is do I need to program the new injectors ?

This is why volvos can be a pain in the ass to work on. Have a 2012 volvo s60 t6. Had almost same situation with mine. Had some issues with rough idle and misfire. Found a bad pcv diaphragm. Replaced and was fine for 4 days. Yesterday started misfiring when warm only #2. Any ideas. Swapped coils, plugs etc. Could I have misplaced the diaphragm? Could it be the entire pcv unit needs replaced. Or could it be an injector? Im not a mechanic but can do most my own work and diagnostics.

If the misfire is consistently on cylinder 2 I don't believe it would be the pcv. Check compression compared to other cylinders. Try swapping the injector. Good luck.

Thanks and if you think of anything else please feel free to let me know. Is cylinder 2 intake side or exhaust side?

Is purging the fuel rail a big deal? I had taken all apart but couldn't get rail and injectors out. Seemed a bit stuck!

@@JeremiahL1616 cylinder two is the second with cylinder 1 being on the passenger side.

@JeremiahL1616 they will be stuck in the head. Need to spray some penetrating fluid around the seals. Don't loose the fuel feed pipe o ring

Phil you dont want to be sooooo scan tool myopic use some other modalities there is a fuel pressure sensor in back of engine on fuel rail hook your snap on scope to to signal wire and ac couple the channel you will see fuel flow slight difference use another channel injector as a reference great videos by the way keep em coming stay well bro

Thanks thats a great idea! I was going to current ramp the injectors but after viewing the wiring diagram I discovered there is no common feed wire to clamp onto. Both injector wires run back to the ECM from each injector. If/when it comes back I'll give that a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

I had this issue on my 2009 S80 T6 AWD, ended up getting a code for my fuel rail pressure sensor. Replaced that and since then it has been much much better upon coke starts, but every now and then it still misfires on 6 on cold start or it takes an extra couple seconds to crank. My MAF data is normal, however my fuel trims are a bit wacky. +10.1% on my LTFT and my STFT is somewhat normal fluctuates +/- 6%. Haven't found any leaks around my intake hoses or air box, so maybe I should just get new injectors or replace the fuel pump? I hate playing the guessing game where I just throw parts at it until it's fixed. Any help would be appreciated

It's hard to say what to do here. Swap or replace the plug, coil and injector. I never did fix this one, the customer sold it.

Hey mate. Do you have any updates on this? I suffer the same problem - misfires on 5th and 6th only on cold start, same conditions as in the video. When hot then it is all good, works like a swiss watch. Replaced the spark plugs, switched the coils from 5th to 1st and from 6th to 2nd. Misfires stay on 5th and 6th cylinders. Haven't tried to unplug and to plug again the injectors. I would probably do that. Could you please support? Thank you very much in advance!

Not so about replacing the fuel pump; I saw a video the other day on how to do it from inside the front of the engine.

excellent video, on the 2008, you don't have to remove the motor mount :)

Hey Phil. Any updates on this? I've got nearly the exact same problem on my XC70 T6 3.0L, except it's misfiring on Cyl 1 on cold starts. Replaced plugs and switched coils but the problem persists. My next guess was coolant seeping in, but I'd be much happier with it being an injector/connection issue. Great video btw.

Well as a matter of fact yes... it came back last weekend with the mil on. Customer did not notice it actually misfiring but according to the codes, p0301 and p0306 were in history. I looked at mode 6 data and there were significant numbers of misfires reported on number 1 and a few on number 6. I have ordered one injector as they are crazy expensive and will be changing number 1 injector to see what happens. As far as coolant entering the cylinder goes if your not getting any white smoke from tge tailpipe which is hard to tell in the cold or the coolant is not dropping then I doubt its that. Try unplugging number 1 injector and deoxidizing the contacts and reconnecting them. Also look at mode 6 data in generic obd2 mode for misfire counters. I'll be posting an update video when I get parts in. HTH

@@PhillipBailey Interesting. Given that you switched #6 injector to #1, it does seem like it could be an injector problem. I'm in Canmore AB, so it'll be a few more months before it warms up enough to tell if there's white smoke coming out the tailpipe. I'll try cleaning the contacts for now and eagerly await your next video. Thanks for the update.

The customer reported that it was good for a few weeks and the problem returned but then the weather warmed up and the condition stopped. I believe they sold the vehicle last summer. I'll check with my customer.

@@PhillipBailey I will really appreciate if you could get in touch with your customer for a feedback. So you are saying injector replacement didn't fix the issue? In this case what else could cause the problem? As far as I hear from many Volvo guys, it is almost impossible the issue to be due to faulty injectors.
BTW I don't have any issues with coolant level. I am saying this cause you checked if there was a coolant inside the cylinder.

Wow, what a Rotten b @#_ of an issue.. I hate these cars.. I'm trying to help a roomie fix a really strange issue that seems somewhat similar except his started with rough running and now wont start at all. We've tested all sorts of stuff and the more we test the less sense it makes.. and we don't have a nice scan tool to work with :/ I'm stumped just parusing the internet for clues at this point lol.
