Flying sideways suddenly a tree appeared on the side of the screen. The drone was expected to pass having the trees behind it. Obviously the drone had been moved backwards from the intended path. Flying in night mode OA was off. A close call..
Great video! I always fly straight up after launching my drones until they are higher than the surrounding tress or other structures. Only after that, will I fly horizontally. The RTH features are great! I've lost connections many times, but the drones always come back!
Congratulations! You touched probably the very most important issue in drone flying! I fly a DJI mini3 pro and with this tiny drone all your points are of particular importance! I also have run into many of your issues, however I was always particular aware of the danger and therefore extremely careful and touch wood, so far accident free. I found that flying with the goggles gives me somewhat more control, but if I do so, I also use prop guards, due to the lack of side obstacle avoidance. However, the very best solution is to have a spotter equipped with some binoculars assisting you. And I think to have another person involved in this hobby is simply an asset! Thank you for a very well done video!
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. I have yet to experience flying with goggles. A spotter is always a good idea, but not always easy to come by 😉
I'm not convinced that VLOS is even helpful. I have a Potensic Atom which is very easy to fly and I understand where it is all the time because of its FPV. I also have a cheap non-FPV drone and, even when it's still in the VLOS, I can't tell whether it's facing me or facing some other direction. So when I push it forward, it's not easy to tell quickly whether it's moving toward me or away from me. I'm pretty sure I'll eventually lose it because of that. Feels a little dangerous to even fly it.
I agree 100%. In Canada VLOS is supposed to mean that you can see the drone without visual aids. I think in the US it actually means something else, like being able to know where your drone is and having an unobstructed path to it. Don't quote me on that though. Thanks for sharing!
What a coincidence. I just posted a blog post (go live on the 2nd) about BVLOS and the dichotomy of flying within the rules or bending them to get that creative shot. Great content here. And your dynamic presentation skills will entertain time after time. Thanks.
I remember hitting a Wire with my Mini-2 ! You don't see those Wires until you are right on them ! Good thing those Wires were about 20 feet high because they were Telephone Wires crossing the Pasture i was Flying around and only cost me a cleaning job of removing some Mud from my Gimbal but all was good.
@@TheOneDroneMan, yeah ! I have three of them and two of them needs to have the Ribbon Cables changed right now ! Actually , one of them needs more than the Ribbon cause I Stupidly damaged the GPS Module and the ESC Board , so that one needs those three components but the other just needs the Ribbon Cable.
Here's another limitation to VLOS, and one that cost me my very first drone two weeks after I bought it. It sleeps today at the bottom of the Nashua River in Groton MA USA. At that time flying by sight was mostly all I knew, being very new to the activity. My drone (Mavic Mini) was only 50 to 75 feet away (sorry, I'm not fluent in metric). It completely disappeared against a backdrop of foliage. It just blended in so perfectly that it became invisible. Knowing what I know now it would have been an easy problem, but VLOS does require the ability to see the aircraft at all. Drones, especially small ones are very hard to see in front of foliage, and probably other backgrounds as well. Anyway, I didn't know how to handle it, my aircraft hit a tree and fell in the river.
Oh man you were so lucky haha, great footage bro. Thanks for sharing this with us drone lovers. Definity a learning experience right. I'll order a new drone what we settle in our new home. Cheers from Mexico.
Safest operation - Use all available information including VLOS, FPV, GPS+map, sensors, prior surveillance, etc. You can hover your drone and look around with its cameras, including looking up, horizontally, and down. I often begin a flight by taking the drone to a target altitude, and there I do a 360 to verify that I am above all obstacles that I plan to fly over.
@@TheOneDroneMan Yup, scary seeing how many near misses and power lines I went in-between without knowing, but this little mini Pro3 is tougher than it looks, just needed to replace props. Using Master Screw SS
One thing I always do is rotate left or right first to see if there is anything there before taking a video moving sideways....but....you can still miss wires!
i done just as you said i was flying just a short distance and thought i was going to clear the tree and well i with the very tip top of the tree and hate to say its still there SIGH!!!!
This is a great example why all the regulations demanding flights all be within VLOS are mostly nonsense in my opinion. In 20 years of flying various aircraft and drones I ve had my fair share of crashes, ALL but one of them was while flying VLOS. I ve only had one mishap while flying FPV and that was because of a motor that fried its winding and dropped the drone out of the sky. With the modern advances in FPV there is zero reason not to be flying via that and beyond view as needed, it provides a far safer and better perspective of the aircrafts position. LOS is so easy to lose perspective and depth with if you are more than a few hundred feet away
I agree. Manned aircraft have been flying via instruments for decades and it is very safe. We have technology that is more reliable than our eyes while standing on the ground 1,500 feet away. I haven't even anywhere near your experience, but learned that pretty quickly. Thanks for your perspective.
This video in itself doesn’t look real, the actors sound and look robotic when you look closer their lips move differently from the words that come out. 🤔
You're right, but I'm real. For the intro I used some avatars from HeyGen. Good observation, but it's all part of making videos these days. Thanks for noticing.
I’m interested in the topic but this ruined the video for me. @theonedroneman I understand the need to experiment with AI (I love toying with it for my content creation as well) but this is so in the middle of uncanny valley that it makes your video unwatchable, to me anyways😢
I noticed it right away and actually thought the robotic vibe was intentional. It reminds me of all the times I tried to make sense of an instruction manual and wonder why I have extra parts at the end. The avatars make it sound so easy, then switch to the real-world and hear what George went through, I thought it was great, almost kaufmanesque. Keep up the great work, George!
I get where you are coming from. However, the only real actor is the guy himself; the rest looked like avatars. And while it did seem a bit wooden in the first minute or so, it seemed like he relaxed a bit and that got better. It also seems that he speaks a bit slower so maybe that is just the way he is. All that aside, the content of this video was great and he touched on a few topics that many drone pilots are painfully ignorant of. VLOS seems to be misunderstood by many, and he’s absolutely right that this does not mean you have to be constantly staring at the drone the entire time. It’s great that he elaborated on that a bit.
hopefully the law changes in Canada in the very near future... there are too many applications where drones need to fly with technology instead of human eyeballs.
Now I wonder if I restarted the app, if my drone would have reconnected back to the app. I never even thought of that. Or rebooted my phone even. I'm assuming it was hoovering in one place till the battery died then dropped into the water. I was unable to locate it visually when it lost connection with the app. I had a pretty good idea where it was over the water but could not see it. I also think I had the return to home altitude set to high, well higher than it need to be.
Hmm, that's too bad. I'm thinking that the return to home should have worked though. I have mine set quite high too, just in case I'm near buildings. Generally higher is better (I think). You likely could have regained control via the app. When this happened to me in Edmonton, it was a bit of a shock, but the drone was fine. I think the app dropped because of some stupid issue with the phone . It was my regular one(too many apps).
I use "Speakline" to generate voices and sometimes just alter my own in Final Cut Pro. You can also generate people and voices with HeyGen. Seems like some viewers don't like it, but I think it's fun.

I lives a very long split second of shock 😱, then it was over, big relief, but my reflexes aren't that fast, or maybe my inaction saved the day because the drone passed the wires. The upward facing sensors also may have helped. Thanks for sharing and all the best..👍
Visual Line Of Sight is subject to interpretation. In the USA, the FAA would not consider that to be within visual line of sight because you can't see it well enough to avoid things or maybe not even get it back if the video failed. Visual Line Of Sight is often mis-interpreted to be what you are talking about: "Oh, I can see it out there. Yes, that tiny speck is my drone".
The FAA rule is 3 statute miles. The FAA allows night strobes that must show flash min of 3 miles away. There is a reason large balloons are on some power lines Mountain's. Also FAA does not like the use of binoculars. However at 3 miles? Best thing is to do is plan the route, and have a clear day for observation. Kind of like making sure a high reach, or antenna pole will not hit a power line. Things can be worse without situational awareness, and pre route planning.
