Drones & Lasers are putting Aircraft at Risk
What do Laser pointers and drones have in common?
Apparently, bot can be misused to put manned air traffic at risk.
While I’m not sure what to do about laser pointers, I have a simple suggestion on how to mitigate the drone problem. It has already been implemented in the United States, but not in Canada.

Let's talk about some of the frustrations you are likely to experience as a drone operator! Does your city have a bylaw, requiring you to jump through impossible hoops to obtain permission for launching your drone from a park, even if you are licensed and have all federal requirements are met? As drone operators we need to start standing up for ourselves and our craft. I've started a conversati...

Hello George, I agree with you, that all drone buyers should be forced to at least start with taking a course like the USA TRUST course for recreational drone Flyers to understand the rules and consequences of not following the rules. Folks need to know that flying even a toy drone has rules and consequences around usage of them. One example happened to me when my neighbor who knew that I have a number of drones and an advanced RPAS Certificate, asked me to check out a small $50 drone that they bought at a corner store for their 8 year old son. So, I looked at it and got it in the air. It had no GPS. After a few minutes in the air with a ton of stick action to keep it airborne, I landed it and said that if it were up to me, I would not give this to her son or her husband because if they were ever able to fly it and it got away from then and went into on coming traffic and caused an accident they would be liable and could be sued and heavily fined. I suggested that they take it back to the store and ask for a refund, as it was too dangerous for someone with no drone flying skill to operate and control properly. So, George I think that Transport Canada should step up here and force store owners to make customers register all drones purchased at their store and take a rules test and flight test too. You can register your drone however if you go to Mexican customs and they spot your drone your will have to pay the Mexican Import tax which is an about 10% of the current value of your drone. To avoid this fee you will have to import your drone into Mexico through the Mexican government webpage.

You make it sound like this is an easy task. I’ve been studying to get this small little license and it’s off the chart just to be able to fly a micro drone I’m not impressed and I believe this will destroy the sport for most people

In my opinion, a basic license should be required to fly a micro drone, just for the safety aspect. However the restrictions that a basic license gets you around are so minimal it doesn’t make any sense, as it doesn’t “unlock” any places.

I agree. Maybe it should be something even more basic than the current basic license, perhaps at the point of sale. I like the way the US has this TRUST license.

I truly feel your pain. I am only a recreational drone pilot flying a sub-250g drone, but I hardly fly it because of the crazy City of Edmonton by-laws. I have a basic drone pilot's license, which I don't actually need for my small drone, but I want to be a responsible drone operator. The city is just really out of touch with the issue. If anything, this policy tends to make people stretch the limits of VLOS, because they can't take-off/land from an optimal location. I hope you get a better response to your recent letter, but I am doubtful anyone will even bother to try to understand the issue you are having. Consider teaming up with DPAC on this. I know Don was asking for people to help represent DPAC at their local municipalities. Best of luck. Please post an update once you get a response to your letter.

Hello George, I thoroughly enjoy your drone videos along with your sense of humor. It is too bad that the Edmonton administration are causing sincere certified drone pilots like yourself grief and headaches due to their ignorance about the up and coming field of drone work. They need to focus their attention on novices with no drone experience who purchase drones from Walmart, Best Buy, Costco and other retailers. Then try to fly their drones not knowing the Transport Canada rules and penalties associated with flying a drone improperly and/or dangerously. These retailers, drone companies, cities and Transport Canada should be made accountable to properly educate folks before they purchase a drone in the first. They recognize that folks who took the time and effort to become a certified drone pilot whether a Basic one and/or an Advanced one are most unlikely to break the Transport Canada rules. The easiest fix is that all drones should have mandatory geo-fencing and when a person acquires their Basic or Advanced RPAS Pilot Certificate that they can enter their Transport Canada number into the drone to unlock the geo-fencing. This should help place drones in the proper hands of educated professionals. What do you think about that? DPAC’s help here with educating city administrators should help too. Good luck and keep up the excellent work. Ed W. Nova Scotia, Canada

    • @rskura
      @rskura 25 днів тому

Well said, and I don't really think the City of Edmonton knows anything about Transport Canada rules. Maybe if they understood what a person with a basic or advanced license has been trained on, they might think differently.

I have talked to the Federal Aviation Dept here in Mexico and was told quite clearly that no non Mexican can fly a drone, regardless of weight here. The laws changed back in about 2020 because of tourists abusing the no fly laws. I live here in Mexico and do fly my DJI Mini's quite a lot. But I always make it a point to be-friend a policeman of some kind before I do. The local police especially will confiscate your drone so they can resell it. The paper work shown on other videos are from 2019, laws change here just like any where else.

I went to Mexico in 2023 and thought I couldn't fly for commercial use which would have been the case if they determine UA-cam commercial use. The resort also had a no drone restriction. The import tax is just a shakedown to get money out of you. They say if you paid it once keep the receipt as you shouldn't have to pay it again on a future trip. It didn't seem to be worth the hassle and you always run the risk of some police officer that doesn't know the confusing regulations either confronting you and you end up losing your drone or paying a bunch of money to get to keep it. I didn't even bother taking my drone to Mexico.

Recently had to do this repair on my mini 2 as well. From looking at it before taking the cable out I think the rubber gimbal mounts are allowing too much movement potentially due to the rubber stretching with age. Mine is at about 3 yrs old now. While I was replacing the cable I replaced the rubber gimbal mounts and the new ones are a lot firmer and don’t allow as much movement.

Yesterday I received this in response to my inquiry to the AFAC (Mexican FAA) about foreigners operating in Mexico. This reply was cc'd to the Executive Director of Aviation in Mexico and the Director of Engineering Standards and Certification. So officials from the top down had eyes on this email. "In response to your email received on April 20 of this year and based on section 4.10.16. of the Mexican Official Standard NOM-107-SCT3-2019, which establishes the requirements to operate a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) in Mexican airspace, I inform you that RPAS operations by foreigners are not allowed in Mexico, regardless of the weight of the aircraft or the intended use of it. I add the aforementioned numeral for quick reference 4.10.16. They will not be able to operate in Mexico an RPAS with foreign registration or registration or operated by foreign RPAS operators, other than those mentioned in section 4.10.15 of this Standard Mexican Official, unless there is a bilateral agreement between the Aeronautical Authority and the Aviation Authority. Civil Aviation of the state of registration/registration." So Mexico is a no fly zone for foreigners... So now I'm applying for Mexican citizenship and I'm going to bring down a drone that my mexican partner can fly, with my guidance, while the application is in work.

Hi, thanks for all your efforts here. Before seeing your video I asked the Mexican authorities and just received a reply. While I can transit with a 249g drone I am not able to use it as a Foreigner, based on numeral 4.10.16. of the Official Mexican Standard NOM-107-SCT3-2019 regardless of weight and even though I am commercially recognised in the EU, AU and Jpn with a global insurance policy

Did you read Rule number 5.1.1 part a? It says that all drones over 025 kg need to be registered. If your drone weighs 248 grams it doesn't apply. They don't really count here. Sure, you could get picky and count them as drones and I guess someone could nail you, but I think if you behave well in the real world, you'll be fine.

"Running before they can even walk" I wouldn't even dream of trying out this option before taking a few months to get some basic flights under my belt!

Does that mean I can just bring my 249g mini 4 to Mexico as a tourist?

Excellent video George! Since they purchased a DJI drone, then they should’ve also bought the DJI Care Refresh insurance, especially on a first time expensive drone. It would have saved them a big repair headache and bill! Plus, they could pick the brains of the DJI support folks with any questions regarding how to properly fly their drone and safety tips. Thanks to you and the lady and her boyfriend for sharing their maiden flight and crash. It sure did take a lot of guts to share it. Ed W. Nova Scotia, Canada

Thank you. Yes, the care refresh is a good idea, but there is a lot you can do to prevent crashes in the first place.

I recently upgraded from the mini 2 se to a mini 3 pro and I have to say it's so worth the upgrade, Don't get me wrong the 2 is a sweet little scouting drone and does great work for it's price, But the 3 pro is just incredible! I say yeah go for the 3 pro with the screen controller you won't regret it and you can scout a scene with the 2 and then fully film or photograph it with the 3 pro. The 3 also performs much better at night with that bigger sensor and the wider aperture range too. Orbits are a piece of cake thanks to the spotlight mode too. The dcine profile is more flexible when colour grading too.
