My hometown is 20 miles from TMI and I was six when the accident happened. It was so scary and all I knew was that the adults were acting very strange and talking about something in the air that was going to make us sick and something was going to blow up. On TV they were recommending evacuations and they said to go south because the wind was blowing north. My whole family (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents) drove to about 1/2 hour south of D.C. and took up almost a whole motel. The only way to get news was to wait for the newspaper every day and watch the 6:00 news on TV. One night they showed footage of President Carter and his motorcade driving through downtown Harrisburg and people lined along the streets cheering for him. I remember thinking everything's going to be fine now because the president is there and he would fix everything because that's what presidents do. They showed him standing right in the middle of the plant talking to the workers, and he even had Mrs. Carter with him. He looked so smart and I thought that he knew he could take care of it because he wouldn't put her in danger like that if he couldn't. It was the first time I felt safe again since the whole thing started.
I don't understand politics or history enough to make a judgment about what kind of president he was, but I know he was my hero at age 6.

A big loss.😭In 1977 it was a year before I graduated high school and when he was out of office I was starting my life independent in 1981. He was a good person and helped so many building houses for them. Now he’s with his beloved wife for all eternity.

Carter wasn’t the worst president, and then he helped build homes for the Poor and never stopped until he got cancer that came back. he lived long enough to vote for Harris, and he didn’t like any form of discrimination. I remember when he got Israel’s Begin and Egypt’s Anwar Sadat together. Sadat was killed in 1981. Begin passed in 1992 a while after a heart attack. Carter was nice unlike Trump or Nixon. Obviously you have no respect for the dead. Carter is no doubt before your time as president. I was in high school at the time.

He did a lot of good things for America ... and for the world. Why do you as a Trump supporter find it necessary to disregard facts and slander a good man? Ohh ... You can thank the California oilmen, who bankrolled the election of Ronald Reagan, and faked the gas shortage, for those gas lines. No connection to President Carter, except Republicans did everything they could to sabotage him so Reagan would win. The Republican bankers and Wall Street rich elite pals artificially jacked up mortgage rates for the same reasons as the oilmen. Republicans don't want decent, honest and caring men in office like Jimmy. It makes them look bad, which they are. President Carter had a lot happen in the world during his tenure, that was unrelated to his Presidenty, but HE was the won who ACTUALLY negotiated the release of the hostages, and Reagan took credit for it. Sound familiar? Republicans STILL do that today. If you don't really understand history and truth, there is still time for you to reform and learn. God bless President Jimmy Carter❤

@ well, I’ll admit to ignorance since I wasn’t in the US at that time and wasn’t a US Citizen. In fact I was just a Latina teen. I just remember in the Reagan 80s people talking badly about Carters admin…something about the Iran Hostages and gas prices, long lines, inflation, etc. but again, this is just what I’ve read and heard, about those years.
However, I do remember how he came to Latin America as an observer of local elections. He was welcome and well respected by all because of his humility, objective behavior and analyses and big advocate of clean and honest elections.
