    I've heard it said that while Grant was suffering from the cancer, he described the sensation he felt while drinking a cup of water as "pouring a vial of molten lava down my throat" or something along those lines. One of the reasons I adore Grant so much is that this is the time when he was writing his memoirs because he wanted to do anything he could to help provide for his wife after he was gone. The guy was suffering unbelievable agony, knew he was going to die soon, yet he spent 12+ hours a day writing, with no guarantee that it would actually amount to anything, just because he wanted to do anything he could to see to it that his wife had some support after he died. He would sadly die only 3 days after he finished writing and to say that his efforts paid off would be a huge understatement. Grant's memoirs is one the most successful books in American history.
    Grant is my personal favorite president in American history. He was a hell of a man and his is a legacy that all men should strive to live up to.

    • @almac664
      @almac664 2 місяці тому

      Do you know that Grant as commander of the Union force instructed them to burn every farm they came across. Kill, maim (some would r a p e the women) as they marched south after the surrender of General Lee. Regardless of who's side you are on, or what values you believe to be righteous; those acts were heinous and down right demonic.
      Yes our country survived after the Civil War; but Grant was no saint. Neither side acted noble to be fair, both sides treated POWs with disdain; but Grant did much worse in my opinion, because surrender had done been established; and innocents were brutally attacked.

      He was also doing his writing with no painkillers, as the only available one was opium that made him too sleepy and clouded his mind. He'd write for as long as he could bear the pain, eat some bread soaked in milk because it was about the only food he could swallow, and only then take the opium so he could sleep and start over the next day.

    My grandmothers 13th birthday actually was on the day that JFK died. She said she was sitting in class, talking to all her friends as they wished her a happy birthday , and the overhead speaker turned on. They announced how the president had just been assassinated and she broke into tears. Even thinking about it every birthday makes her sad.
    She is currently 71

    A lot of those presidents died from heart problems or strokes...stress can often be a contributing factor to heart attacks and stroke. That is scary to think. Look at how they aged in just a few years in office. A lot of us like to talk trash about the presidents for not doing a good job, but just take a moment to realize how difficult a job it must be. Being POTUS is like being the single parent of a 3 year old.

    Polk's last words brought tears to my eyes. He passed peacefully, while being able to spend his final moments alone with his wife of 25 years, whom he professed his eternal love to before going. Nothing else was more important to him in his final moments besides his wife. No doubt the love they had was real, as she stayed a widow for 42 years after until her death. Makes sense why it was the last thing he wanted to say and for her to know before she could never hear him say it again. An incredibly sweet and lovely way to pass.

There is also one where the telephone operator at Parkland Hospital took a call from him asking if the president was dead. He did not say who he was and he did not disguise his voice. Every Texan knew him and his voice. He called three times. From the time this happened when I was 8 years old I always believed he was part of it. That is why Oswald had to die. He did it as a political favor and even says he hopes to get votes from Mississippi because of this. He was afraid he would not be re-elected. The Quartermaster was getting Union soldiers onto paddle boats to ship them up the Mississippi River to get them home after the war. This was ten days after the death of Lincoln. The boat was built for about 300 passengers. In his greed he put 2000+ soldiers and some civilians onto a boat called the Sultana. It sank due to overcrowding and about 1800 people died. No one was blamed and charged. The detectives said there was more than enough evidence to impeach Lincoln so they thought he would prefer to be dead! I saw it on Amazon prime tv. I have a friend who was related to Dr. Mudd who helped John Wilkes Booth by setting his leg. What I do not understand is if he had a broken leg how did he get away from the theater?
