My unpopular opinion is that Album of the Year - BRAT Record of the Year - Espresso Song of the Year - Birds of a Feather Best New Artist - Chappell Roan
Not including Doechii in the conversation for best new artist is CRIMINAL!!! She has been on her grind, releasing great music, and making waves in the rap world
HOTTOGO is quite literally the new YMCA. I heard it everywhere including at an NFL game in the midwest. I saw Chapel live in March of this year when she opened for Olivia and back then not many people knew her. I really think its been her year. To go from pratically a nobody in the music industry to headlining Coachella and Lollapalooza is insane.
Good on you for adding Kendrick. With such a big years for the pop girls Kendrick really stood out with the beef completely taking the internet by storm and ending a giant artists reputation. Also his suprise album was all everyone was talking about for a while and is still on the billboard during Christmas. I think he is arguably up in the biggest artists rn
for me Billie had biggest year since when we all fall asleep, where do we go! , almost song with 2 bilion streams. It hasn't even been a year and album has over 5 bilion streams which is insane considering that album has only 10 songs! and Wildflower will soon be most streamed non single song in history (passing eminem)
the way billie was able to keep up with the new girls and secure mainstream numbers (second most streamed e second most sold album of 2024 only behind taylor swift) with a 10 track album speaks volumes. chappell, sabrina and charli got their break thru this year, but only time will tell if they are here to stay. while billie proved she was not just the "new thing". she gave brat it's biggest hit, she had the biggest hit of the year (is going to surpass espresso) and her 10 track album gut 5bi streams in 7months... like
Well said. She is not a new pop girly. She has always been in her own alt-pop/prog rock lane. In spite of the massive success of BOAF, it is an outlier in their catalogue. Her massive success (more monthly listeners than Taylor Swift) is all the more remarkable.
25:09 as a swiftie I agree that Taylor realesed a lot of different version of the album purely for capitalistic and record breaking reason (and because of this i don't buy them) but i think that it's important to aknowledge that: 1. a lot of those records have been broken WITHOUT all the different version, just with the standard album/the anthology and 2. just 5/6 versions of the album were physical (the four variations of the standard album, a target exclusive phantom vinyl and the physical edition of the anthology, released later in the year). The other were digital version of the standard album that, as a bonus, featured either a live version (like the thank You aimEe x Mean thing cited in this video), an acoustic version or a voice note draft of the song, so i think it's incorrect to call them "the same thing" (for istance, I listen a lot to the draft of My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys and the live mashup of The Prophecy that I found reposted here on YT because they have a very different feeling compared to the stardand version). Anyway, as I said, I agree when people say that this is made just so people spend more money, and it's very sad, but it's a consequence of the world we live in :') P.S. I think Short 'n Sweet should win AOTY. I mean, it was EVERYWHERE.
I feel like TTPD isnt as good of an album as her other ones. even tho there r like 31 songs, it should be quality over quantity. also short n sweet wasn't as big as the other albums and it does indeed have amazing songs in there but a lot of the other albums are a better choice for Grammys like hmhas and brat. but the Grammys r unpredictable and for all we know they could pick a random ass artist or album we've never heard of lol
OMG I AGREE WITH YOU! I am a BIG swiftie, but Billie KILLED IT this year... her album is one I continue to gravitate to over and over again! I was lucky enough to see here night 4 in LA at the Forum. The acoustics that night were insane, shes unreal and she has really discovered her sound. I think Billie deserves it! She's wise beyond her years! The lyricism + Finneas beats = perfection!!!
I feel like I would connect with the album more if I saw it live. it’s not having that impact for me As one of her stand out albums. I think I am still stuck on happier than ever
I am a HUGE swiftie, and still, Billie, and Sabrina, and Chappell, deserve so much. They have worked HARD this year. Yes, Taylor has as well, but Sabrina opening for Taylor, then doing her own tour, is crazy. Chappell as well, she's talented, and such an amazing woman. Taylor does deserve it, but so do these fabulous artists. My hope is to atleast have Billie win something, since she hasn't made an album in so long, I hope she gets recognized for her hard work.
Beyonce isn't a pop girlie anymore. She's an album artist and she has been for a long time. She seems like a pop star because she's freaking Beyoncé and people pay attention when she releases anything. But she doesn't move (or market) like a pop act and she doesn't chase the charts.
Nicky you always COOK when it comes to music commentary. you always credit and take the time to understand overlooked marginalised communities (African & Gay contributions) and when you don’t like something you explain why in a very respectful articulate manner plus your previous marketing knowledge ties everything together beautifully. Thanks so much for all the videos you’ve given us this year. Happy holidays! Can’t wait to see what you do next year ❤
Despite being a massive Carpenter, I (reluctantly) have to agree that Chappell needs to win more than Sabrina. There is a very high chance Espresso will win A Grammy and she may also win best pop vocal album so it’s fair to give this to Chappell
TTPD might be my album of the year but it’s not the album of the year unfortunately the marketing wasn’t good And also It’s insane that Eternal sunshine wasn’t even nominated for AOTY! It’s her best album yet in my opinion
personally, I think that Sabrina Carpenter had the best year. I also know that Chappell Roan, and other artists had amazing years for them, but I think that Brina especially stood out against all the other artists. It took her such long time to get where she is, and she's worked so hard to be as big as she currently is. she's gone from a Disney child star, to a literal ICON that will be remembered in many many years. she's made such an amazing impact on pop culture, and Ive loved watching her grow as an artist. after she "escaped" Disney, she was "tied down" to a record company and HAD to put out music that she didn't fully like and that was for the most part, written for her. she was forced to put out multiple albums, before finally being "freed", and being abled to put out the music SHE likes, and SHE writes. also, we need to give her credit for being able to successfully not be known as just a former, "crazy", Disney kid/star, after being on popular show. and its amazing how she's able to differentiate being a "crazy" old Disney star, since we know many famous actors, who have gone "crazy" after being in the Disney show business, as a chid. lets give her credit for being able to do and talk about things that aren't exactly for younger audiences, without being labeled a "crazy" and "unhinged" former Disney star. its so impressive how she's written and made her own brand from scratch. she had nothing to go from, and built her reputation from the ground, up. she can influence MILLIONS, while still being true to herself. She speaks to so many people, including me, through her lyrics. she can make anyone look at a kiss mark, a cutout, or the color blue, and think about her. that's why she is so powerful. and as you've said, "it takes 10 years to be an overnight suspect" she has bubbly, pink, pop songs that you can dance to, and she has slow, poetic, and truthful songs, that almost every teenage girl can relate to. and that's why, for me, Sabrina Carpenter has been the greatest artist, and has had the best year.
Sabrina Carpenter was named as 2nd Greatest Artist of 2024 by the billboards (Tours, Performances, Charts) Carpenter managed all of her 12 songs in “Short n’ Sweet” debuted inside the top 40 on the BillBoard Hot 100 Sabrina earned her first #1 album on the billboard 200 Carpenter earned 6 grammy nominations Carpenter with her Espresso crowned as one of the most streamed song on spotify 2024 with 1.7 billion streams and Apple Music too And her album Short n Sweet ranked 4th? or 3rd as most streamed album of 2024 (4.6 billion streams) Her 3 singles (Espresso, PX3 and Taste) managed to get into the top 3 to top 1 at the billboards hot Also one of six female artist to chart multiple projects inside the top 10 on billboard history (Short n’ Sweet, Fruitcake) 8th biggest sales vinyl week on billboard 200’s history (Short n’ sweet, 105k) Really this was her year sm, i know the list may sound ‘nothing too special about’ but js yk how she did so well and had great achievements this year of 2024 is shows how truly 2024 was her year. People may disagree me on here and it’s fine, people can have opinions as well but yk i feel like nobody noticed that much how good and high sabrina did on the charts, tours or whatever nobody just understood how well she did and just keeps getting hate on her
TTPD saw me through exam season, went triple platinum in my house😂 I understand why it didn't resonate with people, it's her most lore heavy album yet, and the writing sprawls like a 1950s Biblical Epic. For her hardcore fanbase, that's a plus-plus, while for the casual listener I'm sure it left them scratching their heads😅
@jadededlll We truly lost with the promoted singles😭 I was like, ghurl I can name 5 bangers in the album you could've chosen as singles besides Fortnite
@@PinkDrey-je3mn I think my take away from it is the polar opposite of what you describe. I genuinely think there is a lot of substance in a majority of the songwriting, but ultimately Jack's and Dessner's production (the 'style') leaves much to be desired. The title track is an egregious example of this regression; that uninteresting drum loop washed out in revereb in the intro is like Antonoff didn't even care anymore. And honestly, Taylor's writing there is, well, a choice👁👄👁... I get where you're coming from, and it must have been underwhelming as a hardcore fan yourself. But the album posting the biggest 1st week sales since Adele's 25 is no small achievement...far more people enjoyed it enough to also propel it to become the most streamed album of the year. I never claimed she was exempt from criticism. I love such discourse where we can feel free to agree or disagree :)
people are so sick of her even other artists are too so truthfully she should go into hiatus indefinitely and I want to summon Harry Styles back. He actually makes better music.
@@PinkDrey-je3mn Girl you're clearly straight up lying about being a hardcore fan... I enjoy all of her albums, some more than others, but the people saying TTPD is worse than her debut are wrong. And again, I still enjoy debut, but listen to them side by side and there is a clear winner. The people who don't like TTPD have either only listened once or just don't get it
i also agree that emails i can't send was better than short n sweet. I liked it more because it was more vulnerable and it had more nuance than short n sweet. I love your videos!☺
I loved emails I can’t send, “vulnerable” is such a good way to state it, so when short n sweet came out it was more just “sexy,” and it was kinda disappointing to me
i have to agree! i think it is extremely balanced and thought out compared to short n’ sweet. in its variety it still delivers a cohesive theme and concept. i also love the way words were used in songs like already over, read your mind, skinny dipping etc. very clever and extremely relatable.
Cowboy Carter is most culturally profound and rich body of work we’ve had in a while. Everything about this album is exceptional - vocal delivery (i mean… opera?? Hello?), beautiful lyrics, the arrangements and row natural sounds, it’s literally a lecture of genre and the history of racism. It also opened doors for new artists that were featured on this project. Overall, Beyoncé deserves album of the year for it.
I hear you, I respect cowboy carter so much but damn it’s way too long, once I hit levii jeans I was like “cool that was good” and realized there’s still a while to go and I rolled my eyes, and I think that hurts the album, if we can criticize movies for being too long it’s fair to criticize albums for being too long, idk why she couldn’t trim some of the fat
@@hunkahunka1488 the lengths of the songs are very purposeful and something shes been pushing for a while. It’s understandable that this might be hard for some consumers as the length of music we’ve been accustomed to consuming has been consistently getting shortened. She actually said that most of her music is over 10 minutes when she’s in the process of producing.
@@Habxxn04 it may have been purposeful but imo it was a bad decision, but that’s just me I personally like 13-16 tracks an album cause I like being able to listen to every song in one sitting, but I can’t really do that with cowboy carter and that hurts the experience
Tornado Warnings is the song the most relatable song ever. Like "lying to my therapist" is basically the story of my life. emlis I can't send is so much better the short and sweet. And I don't agree about the taylor swift. TTPD Is such a good album. And it's so underrated. We never saw taylor in such a heartbreaking album. The lyrics in this album are incredible.
I love how insightful and appreciative you are of every artists, while giving valid criticism! 👏🏻 This year was such a wonderful year for Pop music! I’ve never experienced anything like - so many pop girls releasing quality music with such a cultural impact.
Eternal Sunshine and Positions are sister albums in my opinion. Eternal Sunshine is the tragic sequel of the horny rom-com Positions was. I've never been interested in the Grammys but I'm so tuning in this year because the competition really is tough and they're all artists I love or listen to
I agree with almost every single thing you said! as a longtime Billie fan, her success within the pop space has been incredible this year, and so many people have finally been able to see her in a new way, instead of the dark "demonic" music that people used to see her as. If I were to make a prediction about album of the year, it would have to either be brat or hit me hard and soft. Both super successful, both super impactful. I completely agree with you. Chappell has got best new artist in the bag, and I think Sabrina will win in another category.
25:03 ok no it’s not the same thing it’s a live version mash up Nicky. You’re making it out like she put out the exact same track twice with different letters capitalized and that is just not true 🙄
It’s so interesting to me that you feel Eternal Sunshine was not creatively different or challenging- when I feel like it checks so many of those boxes for me! It’s way more vocally restrained and intentional then her past albums, she actually wrote it this time, it has a beautiful concept paired with the movie, and the themes and flaws it lays bare are so much deeper than anything Ariana has explored before.
Love that you include stats and data here but thoughtfully analyzed alongside cultural impact - 2024 was such a historical year for music so there's so much to dig into on this and you did a great job! And Congrats on the #2 music podcast award too btw!! Well deserved🍾🥂🎉
There are no 34 vinyl variants of TTPD they’re only 5 and the 34 are the digital albums and they are not in the release week. All the records that you mentioned are in the 1st week only
Yeah, his video has pretty good points on the other albums but TTPD was totally overlooked. It might not be sonically innovative but it's one of her best lyrically. But anyway, opinions 🙆🏻♂️
@@LuisCarlos-xp3gsI felt folklore was much more creative lyrically than ttpd, but that’s because to me ttpd just felt like it was complex writing for the sake of it, while folklore had more intention behind it. It felt more rooted than ttpd. There were a couple of times listening to ttpd I was like”that’s a big word out of nowhere” and it didn’t feel like it really needed to be there, yaknow? (I’m a swiftie btw I love her but ttpd was not my fav across the board)
As someone who's also not a massive Swiftie but still quite a fan of Taylor's work I actually totally agree with you on TTPD being her 'worst' album because in my opinion there were songs that were very well written but she just didn't deliver with vocals at all and most of the album just sounds so bleak. Only a few songs sound good in terms of vocals like 'who's afraid of little old me', 'guilty as sin' and 'imgonnagetyouback'. I really hope Billie takes home AOTY because HMHAS is definitely her best album and a true masterpiece!
as a swiftie, ttpd was good lyrically but vocal wise it was like she was just talking over music in the background. it also sounded rushed since most of the songs were about a man she broke up with six months before
Kinda agree. The songs that were performed are the greatest ones. Let's be honest TTPD is not better than Midnights bridge wise. Midnights has more fire bridges than TTPD. TTPD has like very good songs but also very bad songs you know.Very Bad songs in TTPD: The Black Dog, Fresh out the slammer, I can fix him (no really i can), TTPD, the prophecy,CoSoSoM. For me TTPD is only better than Fearless, Evermore and Red for me. The other albums are way superior in my album ranking.
My unpopular opinion Album of the year : Cowboy Carter Record of the year: Not like us Song of the year: Birds of a feather Best new artist: Chapell Roan
@@knight9040yes. It’s literally the second highest critically acclaimed album and has made such an incredible cultural & musical impact. The music itself is objectively excellent, from the vocals, to the themes of identity, motherhood, history, family, and production, it embodies musical excellence. Hate on Beyonce all you want but it’s delusional to say the album isn’t a big contender for AOTY.
megan , tyler the creator and conan gray were absolutely snubbed this year, they both had a massive moment. like the AI Beatles song being nominated twice but these icons not at all is criminal. also nicky where's the doechii!!
Last year, I went to The Eras Tour in Mexico City. I knew Sabrina would be opening, but I didn't care to listen to her music beforehand. When she performed, I was amazed at how good her songs were. All of them from "Emails I Can't Send," "Read Your Mind," and "Fast Times" stuck with me immediately, so I ended up liking them more than "Short n Sweet." But without that album, she wouldn't have had the success that came after. It's like BTS, who started really hitting big in 2019-21, but their best albums and songs (in my opinion) are the ones they released in 2015-16. You need to release something great and the next project will do better.
21:47 it’s not gonna be chappell or sabrina the votes are gonna cancel each other out, it’s gonna come down to raye or doechii and raye has the strongest chance she is pure catnip for the voting pool and what they favor
I have to say i'm a biggggg swiftie and love Taylor, i in some kind of way agree with you. Blocking Billie is really bad and yes she wanted to break records but she still could've done that without it
I’m personally a massive Taylor Swift fan, and I agree with you that the marketing of TTPD after its release was subpar (just like Beyoncé)- they didn’t capitalise on the popularity of songs like “I can do it with a broken heart” and “guilty as sin”. In Taylor’s case it was probably because she was in the middle of a tour and didn’t really have time to record any other music videos and do further marketing. I also think this album was a more introspective, personal one, for the fans, and not written for the wide audience. That’s why it feels especially weird when she released 34 different versions of the albums just to break more records, when the vibe of the album wasn’t “commercial”. I hope Billboard makes rules about maximum three versions of an album counting to sales or something, because this is getting out of hand!! I especially despise when artists release special versions only available in the US in order to boost sales in the first week. In 2024, both Sabrina and Rosie released songs on special US-albums, which is so annoying as a non-US fan. Like, shouldn’t artists release music for the sake of it being enjoyed - not to artificially boost sale numbers?
For me I’d have to give it to charli and the sheer cultural success brat had. In the royal court episode she did she talked about how what she thinks makes an artist is someone who has a steadfast vision and ultimately makes a change in culture and I really think brat embodies that. For me it’s the most iconic album released this year and when we look back 10,20,30 years from now it will be regarded as one of the most legendary moments in music pop culture.
Does the Lana “album” by SZA count because it’s like an album but also SOS deluxe so idk also I think Charli and Billie being nominated for a Grammy as the best duo of the year was amazing I think they should win btw if you didn’t know charli and Billie were nominated for a Grammy for best duo performance for Guess
Am I the only one wondering what happened to share your screen podcast? Yes I 100% agree emails I can’t send is Sabrina’s best album, it’s so underrated. I’m sooo exited for sza and Kendrick’s tour!
I praying for either a Chappell or Sabrina SWEEP of the main categories... (I think it should be Chappell personally) however I will be generally be happy if just the pop entries sweep. I am a MASSIVE pop music fan and I would love this years amazing pop SMASH hits gets the Grammys. but again tbh I won't be upset if literally anyone wins anything. im stoked with the noms this year! (except a bar song(tipsy)
The point mentioned for Sabrina is so trueeeee. Idk y lotsa ppl haven’t looked into her older work. It is really good, she had a different style in those
I honestly feel like you have to include Tyler the creator onto this list aswell. He’s been proving himself so much on how he balances creative integrity and commercial success while wearing all of his influences and appreciation for people on his sleeve. Also, fun fact, if his album was released on a Friday instead of a Monday, it would have had the 2nd highest 1st week of the year. Btw, amazing video!😊
I loved your take on this omg! 2024 was such a good year for music, while am a huge beyhive and Swiftie, I think aoty should definitely go to Queen Bey due to her leap into genre bending and breaking barriers for future artists, but I also want my girl charli to win. brat was phenomenal in every way. I've been a fan of hers since pop2 and so it's nice to see her finally get the flowers she deserves. my choices though comes down to Cowboy Carter and brat! but I guess we'll see :)
I think the beauty of music is that it all resonates with us differently!! And our favorites can even change based on where we are in our lives and our emotional state at that time :)
Brat was a great cultural moment but the number of people who are actually streaming the album isn’t as high as social media leads you to believe. It’s ridiculous that some people think the USA is the world. In reality, there are people from other countries (considering me) who are also streaming Brat, but the level of popularity may not be as high Short 'n Sweet has also achieved commercial success with a higher amount of people actually streaming it
Brat as a cultural moment outgrew both Charli and the music in general, that’s why so many ppl are talking about brat and brat summer but the buzz isn’t reflecting in commercial success as much. That’s what makes it hard to compare cultural relevance to actual commercial success, eg I would argue TTPD and Taylor have had less cultural impact than Charli has had with Brat, yet it’s undeniable that Taylor obviously is still the more commercially successful artist. I hope Brat does win AOTY though, it’s strongest when it’s presented as a whole album and complete concept, and whilst I love the singles I think it’s more likely to win as an album than individual songs.
Why are you even bringing the streaming argument into a CULTURAL impact conversation? Do you listen to music and engage with art with a freaking calculator?
@@CajloTime It's not just about the numbers. I believe that albums like Short 'n Sweet, HMHAS, Midwest Princess and others are superior albums. Each song on Short 'n Sweet is a hit, but Bart is particularly notable for its cultural impact.
TTPD only started to click after August for me...I think you should give it another try, there are some gems in there and some of Taylor's most devastatingly beautiful lyrics (loml, smallest man, how did it end, the prophecy)
I agree about Emails I Can't send! I can't explain why. Obviously, I listen to both it and Short N' Sweet daily, but I understand that SnS is a better direction for her to go in. I am gonna need more R&B and country on her next album.
Bonnaroo moving Chappell from her original stage was the BEST decision they could’ve made. When I went to Bonnaroo last year the artist I wanted to see the most was Chappell and I’m so glad I got to see her (and I say that loosely bc I am 5’2 and the crowd was so insane I only really HEARD her 😂). HOWEVER, when the schedule was first released she was slated to perform at a tent stage that’s intended for smaller artists - usually the undercards on a lineup. I was really worried as the date got closer bc as her popularity was gaining everyone could see the kinds of crowds she was attracting. Had they kept her at the tent stage, it definitely would’ve become a really dangerous situation. So huge positive call on Bonnaroo’s part 😅🎉
Just found your channel earlier today and this is my 2nd video of yours.. I love your content & your take on pop culture & music in general, I've subscribed 🤙🏾 btw 👀 I'm from Va too! Lol
1:17 SAME. Mainstream music really served this year, there's no sign of alternative/underground music in my spotify wrapped lol I feel basic but I dont regret it
Whenever I hear the songs eternal sunshine and I wish I hated you, I cry. So my album of the year is Eternal sunshine even though it didn't dominate 2024
TTPD is actually one of Taylor’s best albums for real swifties. It was not meant to be a casual listen-esk album like she knows how to do so well. So yeah’s this album was for us swifties, not so much the general public, but I didn’t expect a different opinion by a BRAT Stan lmfao.
respectfully it really isnt as a non swiftie when i was really young red and 1989 was how i discovered her and she was genuinely incredible then but this new album is like just everything we have heard from her and nothing sounds new i only genuinely re listened to 3 songs on that album after going through it. She also blocked billie eilish from getting number one which shows u alot abt her character because she was number one for a month and decided that only she can have it. It was def Billies year in my opinion I have been a ling time fan since I was 9 in 2018 however her album has only 10 songs and has 5 billion streams and taylor with over TRIPLE her songs has only a billion more streams I think that itself shows that taylors album was not that strong. Also if it was not meant for everyone why in the hell should it be aoty, aoty means its for everyone anyone can listen to it and like it..
@ wrong. Then by that logic Billie and brat should get AOTY either because those aren’t for everyone either especially Brat. You can’t get everyone to like everything, and if you were a “real swifty” like you claimed, you’d know that some of the released variants that Taylor released were highly requested, but then again, you’re not a real swiftie so you wouldn’t know that. The music industry is competitive, not a charity event, if someone who released an album months ago can block a newly released album, it shows that those albums did not have the strength or otherwise heat behind them to dethrone the other. Lol, being a fan since 2018? Lmfao that’s not a long time fan. You aren’t a long time fan until you’ve had to endure what Taylor endured in the early 2010’s. Also, if Billie didn’t get online running her mouth throwing shade at Taylor for doing long hours tours, then maybe she wouldn’t have been blocked. I play that album front to back almost every day, so yeah, it’s subjective. Us swifties don’t claim you, find another fandom. NEXT!
TTPD is an album for the Swifties. It's probably my favorite Taylor album, it really resonates with me. Having said that, it's not the album of the year. There's no doubt about that. I hope Sabrina take home AOTY this year. This was her year!
Hi so THANK YOU AIMEE with the new name variation was a live version, not the exact same thing. Please do more research and dont send meaningless jabs at people.
I feel like a lot of new artists that have made hit songs this year will blow up again in the future. Shaboozey, Chappell Roan, Doechii, JVKE, Teddy Swims, etc. Then you have a lot of artists who made a huge comeback this year; Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars. Then there's members of bands such as Blackpink and BTS who became successful as individual members as well; ROSE, Lisa, Jennie, Jungkook, Jimin. I also noticed some artists never made any songs this year. Olivia Rodrigo, Pink, Adele, Harry Styles and more that I can't name off the top of my head. I have to give credit to EDM artists cuz their music is good; David Guetta, Alan Walker, Calvin Harris. My favorite albums being Chromakopia, F1 Trillion, Hit Me Hard And Soft and BRAT. I can confidently say 2024 was a successful year for the music industry and if I have anything else I will add it to the comment. Great video man! Edit. Worst songs of the year. Into the thick of it KSI, u think the poop(fart) ICE SPICE Worst artist of the year. Jojo Siwa, Niki Minaj Also shoutout to all the artists I havn't mentioned that i absolutely love. The Weeknd, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Troye Sivan, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler The Creator. Noah Kahan, Billie Eilish and Tate McRae.
Trisha and Wendy Williams are my problematic favs.. THIS VIDEO WAS EVERYTHING!!! You should totally do a video about frenemies era, I still think about that😂😂
I think it should go like this (imo obviously): Album of the year: Hit Me Hard And Soft - bc it’s one of the best albums ever created in terms of vocals, production, how it all ties together but they don’t all sound the same, the fact that the songs switch up and surprise you, also bc they make you cry bc of lyrics or music. Other albums were more culturally influential like brat but I think in terms of music (which should be the main factor) this one so deserves it. Record Of The Year: Espresso - bc it’s the most streamed song of the year, it’s fun, it’s catchy, it deserves credit but I don’t think it’s the best song ever written imo so song of the year isn’t espresso for me Song Of The Year: Good Luck, Babe! Or Birds Of A Feather (can’t choose) - both are great songs, some of the most played songs this year, they are just amazingly catchy yet emotional and have amazing little details that just make you ascend when you hear them Best New Artist: CHAPPELL ROAN - no doubt. She had one of the biggest rises in fame in history, her debut album is one of the most successful albums this year, she’s great live, she’s a music personality, she supports (and is part of) the queer community in ways that many pop stars don’t, overall just the biggest new name this year. No brainer.
I can understand why people feel the way they do about tortured poets. It’s my favorite Taylor album of all time now, but i had to let it resonate with me for a while especially during summer when everything was brat and Chappell and Sabrina and so much self-love and gay pride and confidence where tortured poets is kind of the antithesis to that and was a very, deeply personal album by Taylor- her most personal album yet. And it takes a lot of dissecting to uncover that. And i agree that it didnt make a huge cultural impact, if at all. And comparing that to all of these other albums that really did have a such a different sound and were actively effecting culture, it can seem less than. But looking back, i think people will realize how much it actually does stand out in her discovery compared to her other albums. I just think it got over shadowed by the tour and how big her culture impact was the summer before. Keep in mind while she recorded and released this album she was still actively touring the biggest tour of all time, and not only that but CHANGED her tour to incorporate the new album. Which i think is so impressive. As for the variants, the number you stated includes like digital versions, which are just the same as the physical ones… SO breaking it all down it was 9 cds, 6 vinyls, and 4 cassettes. 19 physical variants. Which really is no different from Olivia Rodrigo’s “guts” album having 26 physical copy variants. Or Billie eilish’s “hit me hard and soft” album having 13 physical variants. And “brat” having 29 physical variants (some of these were exclusives). And 13 physicals variants of Sabrina’s “short & sweet” album. *credits for all of this information just go on the website discogs.com it’ll tell you every physical variant made of an album.* ALL modern artists do a whole catalog of physical variants, digital variants, whatever variants of their album to generate sales and streams. But really what it comes down to, especially for Taylor, is people BUYING physical copies of music. It’s known artists kind of get screwed over from streaming platforms and Taylor has always been somewhat open about owning music and not just streaming it. But really my point is, if the fans wanted to they would. It’s not that these artists aren’t putting out as much as Taylor, it’s just that their fans are buying into it as much as hers are. And i think she plays into more because she knows how much her fans like it. I don’t think that’s cheating the system just because she’s winning. And i only come to her defense because most of the time it’s misinformation from a shitty headline that people start running with before knowing all the facts because she’s the most famous pop star and everyone’s always reaching to find something to hate her for.
Eternal Sunshine the album and the song healed me. The intention and feeling expressed in her songs helped me feel what I needed to feel aloud after the pain of my last relationship. I definitely think it’s her best album yet ❤❤❤
aoty - brat record of the year - espresso song of the year - not like us (as great as something like birds of a feather was, not like us was insaneeee) best new artist - chappell roan producer of the year - mustard (although i'd go with jack antonoff if he was nominated and GNX was released in the correct time frame) i mean tbh as long as taylor doesn't win anything i'll be happy
Did you know your voice was featured on Google’s year in search 2024? I forgot the time stamp but your voice was there during chappel roan part almost at the end
Hi Nicky, love your channel - I'd love to see you do a video on the success of artists like Nemhasis (dropped by her label for being too controversial aka. Palestinian, and within a year has massive success as an independent artist, with critics ranking her with Sabrina, Billie, Charlie... and yet she's still blowing up and lesser known to mainstream listeners) and Elyanna (imo a candidate for Best New Artist who just finished a World Tour and whose latest album WOLEDTO is a cultural milestone, not just to the Arab speaking diaspora). Something distinctive about this decade of music is the rise of artists who don't sing in English like many Latin American artists, and Spanish singer Rosalia, crossing cultural boarders and hitting the mainstream! We've seen individuals do this, but currently it feels like a movement which is awesome!
TTPD for me is the complete summary of her 2020s music. Folklore, Evermore and Midnights merged to make the Break-up Album we fans expect from her. It's not for everyone for sure but this is the album that she outspokenly said she needed to make in order to survive. For her, she NEEDED to do it. And it's like she put it out just to get it off her chest and move on. 31 songs seems a lot but for her it's just normal. She basically did folklore and evermore in less than a year. And I'm excited for TS12 just because she's in a very different state of mind now. I can cleaely see this as the more matured, more experienced sister album of Red and hopefully years from now, people will also understand TTPD more.
As a fellow swiftie who blasts TTPD everyday, I think other swifties need to understand that people who don’t like TTPD are completely valid in their opinions and they have well-thought out and nuanced criticisms for it :)
so as a swiftie, I just wanted to say that, those versions, other artists have them too, and you don’t really wanna start comparing it, 35 versions is an extremely exaggerated way to put it. Now also those extra versions only account for a very small portion of the entire units sold, so if you don’t know about the details of those numbers and you heard about a stan twitter hater post about her versions, you’d think her commercial success is all because of her versions which couldn’t be further away from the truth, the truth is with or without her versions her sales wouldn’t be much different, it’s just a fail safe, to ensure she gets those No.1 spots, and after the chart had been released, you’d learn that even without those extra sales coming from her new versions, it would still hold the No.1 spot, so it’s just a fail safe, versions really have nothing to do with her commercial success if you really know about those data instead of just jumping on the hate train, and conveniently Taylor is the only one dragged in this video when she just doing the standard practice in the industry. Just do your research before you drag an artist.

2024 restored music to its former 2016 glory
This!
Yessss
Correct. But even better. More like 2009 when Bad Romance dropped.
Its dark for swifties tho
not the 2016 girlies making it to this video
Oh I'm sooo with you on Billie, just everything she does and the whole album is so full of talent!
My unpopular opinion is that
Album of the Year - BRAT
Record of the Year - Espresso
Song of the Year - Birds of a Feather
Best New Artist - Chappell Roan
I very much agree with this! But I also think they could give SOTY to Kendrick
@@nicky.reardon yes totally agree that SOTY can also be given to Kendrick xx
Parroting this and the soty to Kendrick. I feel awful that Renaissance didn’t win AOTY (or Lemonade) but I’m rooting for Brat over Cowboy Carter.
I think a pulled a muscle nodding aggressively with this thread. Ouch!
YES!
Not including Doechii in the conversation for best new artist is CRIMINAL!!! She has been on her grind, releasing great music, and making waves in the rap world
Yeah but likely she wont win, the grammys aren't known for properly awarding hip hop artists
she deserves so much I love her
She is so incredible!!!! Love my fellow Florida girl absolutely killing it...
Doechii is queen
Yes I was gonna say the same thing
the emails i cant send praise is so refreshing!! thank you for recognizing that masterpiece of an album
YES!!!!

ITS BETTER THAN SHORT N SWEET
HOTTOGO is quite literally the new YMCA. I heard it everywhere including at an NFL game in the midwest. I saw Chapel live in March of this year when she opened for Olivia and back then not many people knew her. I really think its been her year. To go from pratically a nobody in the music industry to headlining Coachella and Lollapalooza is insane.
She hasn’t headlined Coachella
She did not headline Coachella but I agree with the rest
@@ac9184Didn’t she have the biggest audience at Coachella? She might as well have just headlined with that 110,000 audience or whatever it was

@@anonnyanonymous4800 that was lollapalooza, and she wasn't the headliner for that either which is crazy
The pop girls.
It TRULY was the year of the pop girls giving us everything we wanted and more
Don’t ask me to pick between my mothers, it isn’t fair.
Omg yessss i would have to pick Billie tho but love them allllll ❤
WE are the real winners for getting all this greatness in one year
Good on you for adding Kendrick.
Taylor got 26b streams the last year. Combine all streams billie got after wwafs wdwg and shes still bigger
the way billie was able to keep up with the new girls and secure mainstream numbers (second most streamed e second most sold album of 2024 only behind taylor swift) with a 10 track album speaks volumes. chappell, sabrina and charli got their break thru this year, but only time will tell if they are here to stay. while billie proved she was not just the "new thing". she gave brat it's biggest hit, she had the biggest hit of the year (is going to surpass espresso) and her 10 track album gut 5bi streams in 7months... like
Anyway, as I said, I agree when people say that this is made just so people spend more money, and it's very sad, but it's a consequence of the world we live in :')
Ur literally my favourite video essay maker
I’m so honored omg🥹🫶🏻
Can’t wait to see what you do next year ❤
I listened to cowboy carter in full like everyday when it came out and I had to be in the car forever lol it’s SO good in full as a concept piece
BRAT really was the gift that KEPT GIVING
I think Chappell should win best new artist because before this year she had zero hits where as Sabrina had a few minor hits like feather and nonsense
Despite being a massive Carpenter, I (reluctantly) have to agree that Chappell needs to win more than Sabrina. There is a very high chance Espresso will win A Grammy and she may also win best pop vocal album so it’s fair to give this to Chappell
Yuno Miles 😩
TTPD might be my album of the year but it’s not the album of the year unfortunately the marketing wasn’t good
And also It’s insane that Eternal sunshine wasn’t even nominated for AOTY!
It’s her best album yet in my opinion
I feel like theres a chance ariana didnt send in a for your consideration? With her focusing on film and theater
@@nasirw6407 Her record label could've easily done that. I think it was sent but just didn't get enough preliminary votes to be nominated
personally, I think that Sabrina Carpenter had the best year.
I loooveee Sabrina but she hasn’t made an impact yet
Sabrina Carpenter was named as 2nd Greatest Artist of 2024 by the billboards (Tours, Performances, Charts)
Carpenter managed all of her 12 songs in “Short n’ Sweet” debuted inside the top 40 on the BillBoard Hot 100
Sabrina earned her first #1 album on the billboard 200
Carpenter earned 6 grammy nominations
Carpenter with her Espresso crowned as one of the most streamed song on spotify 2024 with 1.7 billion streams and Apple Music too
And her album Short n Sweet ranked 4th? or 3rd as most streamed album of 2024 (4.6 billion streams)
Her 3 singles (Espresso, PX3 and Taste) managed to get into the top 3 to top 1 at the billboards hot
Also one of six female artist to chart multiple projects inside the top 10 on billboard history (Short n’ Sweet, Fruitcake)
8th biggest sales vinyl week on billboard 200’s history (Short n’ sweet, 105k)
Really this was her year sm, i know the list may sound ‘nothing too special about’ but js yk how she did so well and had great achievements this year of 2024 is shows how truly 2024 was her year. @@imaswiftieokay precisely! Commercial success doesn’t equal influence or impact
Exactly. My biggest issue with the album is that it couldve been cut down to fifteen songs and some of the better songs got zero promotion
I appreciate how detailed you are with this ♥️

Eternal Sunshine and Positions are sister albums in my opinion. Eternal Sunshine is the tragic sequel of the horny rom-com Positions was. I've never been interested in the Grammys but I'm so tuning in this year because the competition really is tough and they're all artists I love or listen to
Love that analogy 😂 honestly I would like to see a movie like that
I agree with almost every single thing you said! as a longtime Billie fan, her success within the pop space has been incredible this year, and so many people have finally been able to see her in a new way, instead of the dark "demonic" music that people used to see her as.
It’s way more vocally restrained and intentional then her past albums, she actually wrote it this time, it has a beautiful concept paired with the movie, and the themes and flaws it lays bare are so much deeper than anything Ariana has explored before.
i agree taylor should not even be considered an artist she just cares about the records
just because she sells doesn't mean she's not an artist
As she should 😊😊

As someone who's also not a massive Swiftie but still quite a fan of Taylor's work I actually totally agree with you on TTPD being her 'worst' album because in my opinion there were songs that were very well written but she just didn't deliver with vocals at all and most of the album just sounds so bleak. Only a few songs sound good in terms of vocals like 'who's afraid of little old me', 'guilty as sin' and 'imgonnagetyouback'. I really hope Billie takes home AOTY because HMHAS is definitely her best album and a true masterpiece!
as a swiftie, ttpd was good lyrically but vocal wise it was like she was just talking over music in the background. it also sounded rushed since most of the songs were about a man she broke up with six months before
@madsyourmirrorball EXACTLY. I'm so glad someone finally pointed that out
Kinda agree.
I think the Grammys should have a category called "Best Social Media/Viral Song"

2024 was really the year of the pop girl in such a huge way that we haven’t seen since 2010/2011
I hope the holy trinity of 2024 pop would someday perform together. That would be fantastic.
Last year, I went to The Eras Tour in Mexico City. I knew Sabrina would be opening, but I didn't care to listen to her music beforehand. When she performed, I was amazed at how good her songs were. All of them from "Emails I Can't Send," "Read Your Mind," and "Fast Times" stuck with me immediately, so I ended up liking them more than "Short n Sweet."
But without that album, she wouldn't have had the success that came after. It's like BTS, who started really hitting big in 2019-21, but their best albums and songs (in my opinion) are the ones they released in 2015-16.
You need to release something great and the next project will do better.

i’m a little bit shocked of how much you just expressed EVERYTHING i think of all of these albums. Like wow 🤯

Btw, amazing video!😊
its not eligible for the grammys this year, next year for sure!
18:12 100% agree, love short and sweet but Emails I Can’t send just gives me unnecessary levels of nostalgia and bliss
My Spotify Wrapped was:
1. Cavetown
2. Penelope Scott
3. Charli xcx
4. Taylor Swift
5. Jazmin Bean
❤
I’m with you on that emails I can’t send is one of my favorite albums of all time
I personally love TTPD. It’s my third favorite Taylor Swift album, but I respect your opinion.
I think the beauty of music is that it all resonates with us differently!!
And our favorites can even change based on where we are in our lives and our emotional state at that time :)
Suck it
I think we should just give them all an award this year. 😂
Brat was a great cultural moment but the number of people who are actually streaming the album isn’t as high as social media leads you to believe. It’s ridiculous that some people think the USA is the world.
In reality, there are people from other countries (considering me) who are also streaming Brat, but the level of popularity may not be as high
Short 'n Sweet has also achieved commercial success with a higher amount of people actually streaming it
Brat as a cultural moment outgrew both Charli and the music in general, that’s why so many ppl are talking about brat and brat summer but the buzz isn’t reflecting in commercial success as much.
I consider myself a swiftie but ttpd was a flop for me too
TTPD only started to click after August for me...I think you should give it another try, there are some gems in there and some of Taylor's most devastatingly beautiful lyrics (loml, smallest man, how did it end, the prophecy)
@ I should! Good idea
Not necessarily a flop just kinda forgettable, even as a swiftie
@sadiebrown4353as a swiftie. It’s not forgettable at all. Went triple diamond in my house
I love watching these pop culture videos ❤
Lol
1:17 SAME. Mainstream music really served this year, there's no sign of alternative/underground music in my spotify wrapped lol I feel basic but I dont regret it
Billie forever❤ We're the same age, I can't wait to see her in future
Please do more research and dont send meaningless jabs at people.
not only that, but also a mashup! so definitely not the same thing. many fans were begginggg for recordings of the mashups too
he’s just biased and wants to be misinformed cause there was a lot of things that weren’t mentioned, this is kinda stupid
Into the thick of it KSI, u think the poop(fart) ICE SPICE
Worst artist of the year. Jojo Siwa, Niki Minaj
Also shoutout to all the artists I havn't mentioned that i absolutely love. The Weeknd, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Troye Sivan, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler The Creator. Noah Kahan, Billie Eilish and Tate McRae.
Omgg finally someone that prefers emails i cant send fwd over short n sweet!!
Trisha and Wendy Williams are my problematic favs.. THIS VIDEO WAS EVERYTHING!!! You should totally do a video about frenemies era, I still think about that😂😂
I DONT CARE WHO WIN😭 As long as she/he deserves it, im happy!
I think it should go like this (imo obviously):
Album of the year: Hit Me Hard And Soft
- bc it’s one of the best albums ever created in terms of vocals, production, how it all ties together but they don’t all sound the same, the fact that the songs switch up and surprise you, also bc they make you cry bc of lyrics or music. Other albums were more culturally influential like brat but I think in terms of music (which should be the main factor) this one so deserves it.
Record Of The Year: Espresso
- bc it’s the most streamed song of the year, it’s fun, it’s catchy, it deserves credit but I don’t think it’s the best song ever written imo so song of the year isn’t espresso for me
Song Of The Year: Good Luck, Babe! Or Birds Of A Feather (can’t choose)
- both are great songs, some of the most played songs this year, they are just amazingly catchy yet emotional and have amazing little details that just make you ascend when you hear them
Best New Artist: CHAPPELL ROAN
- no doubt. She had one of the biggest rises in fame in history, her debut album is one of the most successful albums this year, she’s great live, she’s a music personality, she supports (and is part of) the queer community in ways that many pop stars don’t, overall just the biggest new name this year. No brainer.
love this!! this year has made me fall in love with music & going out to the clubs again!
Here before 300 likes. Your channel feels like a hidden gem and I can’t wait to see you blow up and create more amazing content! Keep it up Nicky
Great job this year! Hope art keeps moving you and your thoughts of art keep moving us!
aoty - brat
record of the year - espresso
song of the year - not like us (as great as something like birds of a feather was, not like us was insaneeee)
best new artist - chappell roan
producer of the year - mustard (although i'd go with jack antonoff if he was nominated and GNX was released in the correct time frame)
i mean tbh as long as taylor doesn't win anything i'll be happy
Based on my listening this year, here is my ranking:
1. Billie
2. Ariana
3. Beyoncé
4. Sabrina
5. Tyla
Mine would be:
Billie
Chappell
RAYE
Kendrick
Beyonce
Thissss^^
Sooooo right!
