ELEX: How Combos (but not the meter!) affect damage

  • Many people believe the Combo Meter in ELEX (bottom-left of the screen) affects the damage of attacks. This is not the case (at least as far as I've seen). What DOES affect the damage of attacks is how many attacks in a row you've strung together, and the difference can be significant.
As shown here, if you fill your combo meter all the way up, wait for a moment, and then use a Special Attack, it will deal a set amount of damage. However, if you instead use the Special Attack with correct timing after a string of attacks (whether they hit or not), you will do significantly more damage, regardless of the state of the meter.
The first clip shows building up a full meter with a Scrap Hatchet, then using the Special Attack a moment later. Note how no visible damage is done to the mech. The second clip shows using the Special Attack at the end of a string of attacks, when the combo meter is barely full enough to allow it. Note how a chunk of the mech's health is lost, even though the Combo Meter was less full than in the first clip!
This knowledge can be incredibly useful in early-game 1-on-1 duels, where using your Special Attack at the end of a combo string can do enough damage to "break through" the defense of an enemy, dealing damage when you otherwise couldn't (especially useful with Mace weapons with their 3-hit Special Attack). This means getting extra Stamina early on through a ring or skill can really help for finishing fights quickly by doing full combos ending with a Special Attack.
This also means that the only thing the Combo Meter itself affects is whether or not you can actually USE your Special Attack (and to help you make sure your timing is correct for stringing attacks together to get that bonus damage).
I believe this applies to normal attack damage too, not just Special Attack damage, its just easier to see with the Special Attack. It should also be noted that each subsequent attack in your string also increases your Attack Strength (stat which causes enemies to stagger or get knocked down), meaning if you do a full combo the last few hits and the Special Attack will almost certainly stagger or knock down the enemy.

Yup, that's it mate. That can cause some crazy damage. You'll need a good amount of stamina pots, if you want to go for the special attacks in early game thou =P Great video!

Your starting Stamina bar should just barely be enough to do 4-light+special or 3-heavy+special, or a variation on those. Therefore, in a 1-on-1 fight, after avoiding an enemy attack with just stepping out of the way or jetpack or whatever, you can pull off the full combo and get this effect (assuming they don't parry part of your combo!).
The Special Attack should stagger the enemy enough to back off and recover your stamina. It also helps that each subsequent hit in the combo string increases Attack Strength as well ( www.reddit.com/r/elex/comments/79z381/attack_strength_explained_along_with_some_other ) meaning if you stagger them with the first hit you'll likely keep them "stun locked" until the combo is over. This is very effective for super-early game fights where you have to duel an NPC for a quest or something. You can generally finish the fight pretty fast by backing off, Heavy Attack at range, combo in a few hits, Special Attack for a lot of damage (especially with a Mace), then back off and repeat.
Against multiple enemies or very dangerous enemies where you need your Stamina to also parry or dodge though, than yeah its not a good idea. Might be worth trying to find a ring that gives +Stamina early on though, there are a few you can get near the start if you know where to look and are prepared to run away from stuff :).

No, thank YOU for letting me know about this in the first place! :) I originally didn't think the combo meter OR combos had any effect on Special Attack damage, it was you that let me know how it actually worked and it really improved my fighting ability!

This looks interesting although I think I am missing the point. It seems you are just showing the strength of the finishing move of various weapons. I didn't notice anything with combos themselves. Can you elaborate, please?

I go into a lot of detail in the description of the video if you click on "show more" there. The point is the damage of the Special Attack (triangle button on PS4 controller) is different, even on the same weapon, depending on if you use it in isolation or directly at the end of a combo. So using Attack->Attack->Attack->Special Attack for example will do significantly more damage than Attack->Attack->Attack->Wait for moment to re-position or something->Special Attack. Again, read the full video description for more details and let me know if you have any more specific questions after that.

For some reason, I never realized there was a TRIANGLE special attack.
I often see discussions about such things without mentioning on a particular system,
      Which button to press.
It would be helpful in the pull down description to mention the TRIANGLE button for PS4.
      Thanks for the vid!

I found my answer under your video. I guess this is one of the reasons so many players turned away from the game, not because the combat is bad, but the documentation and UI that give players a false impression of what they have to do. Since armor is a flat subtraction of the damage, special attacks may be the only way to reasonably damage your foes, if your light attack are mostly soaked up and you have not the time for long chains. In addition you are low on stamina at the start. So what happened to hundreds of players was:
They ran around, died, realized they have to evade. They only put in short chains of attacks as it is the narrative in most other games and further realized they have to make damage with the special attack. But since they have such low stamina, they waited at the end of their chain to build up enough stamina for the special attack and still did no damage. Lewl and completely understandable, as the lack of documentation of mechanics and the misleading UI provoked them to. Many people nowadays do not have the breath to run around for hours and fail until they realize what problem they are actually facing - they give up after some hours and write a bad review. I hope that Piranha Bytes realizes what they have actually done here, as they simply lost players with such stuff. If they want a deeper and thoughtful combat system than the typical button smashing you have on other games, you need to explain it in detail and properly.

I agree it is not clear and it is a shame, hopefully with Elex 2 the system will be better explained or just more intuitive in the first place!

@@Rubikant One of the most funny things is that even in the german forums there are threads about the mechanics from theorycrafters, that are very aquainted with other PB-Games, but even the information those people spread is wrong.
Btw. without trying to be snide or something - we are both not 100% correct as well. There is some truth to it, that the combo bar resembles the damage multiplier the attack get. When you start from am empty combo bar AND uses only light attacks, it resembles the damage bonus, but as soon as your hit does not connect (yes even if the bar fills) OR you interrupt the chain for just a millisecond, the bonus damage is gone. Problem is that the bar does not instantly lose, so you can still build it up to get to your finisher faster. Yet, that finisher will not have the damage bonus the bar resembles.
Im not sure If that makes any sense to you. I explained it to my partner who is mathematician without being a gamer, understood it instantly, but it is hard to explain. Imagine a secondary bar that shows the damage bonus and lets call it DamageBonusMeter. When you build your attackchain the ComboMeter and the DBM fill the same, but the DBM instantly goes empty when the CM only gets empty over time.
I am not even sure how much the cap of the DBM is. Overhaul Mods and Cheat Engine say something like 5 stages with 25% damage bonus per stage, but I am not 100% sure that this is correct. Assuming that the "lesser red" part of the health bar only shows the damage you did in the last hit and not some kind of accumulated damage that slowly kicks in (like a reverse version of the recovery-mechanic in dead cells), I could definitely confirm that there would be more than 5 damage stages. Clubbing down NPCs with unlimited stamina and attackchains, show at least that the 7th attack does still way less damage than following attacks:
      imgur.com/a/zkm5Hnc
What we can say with certainty is that the documentation of this game is one of the worst I have ever seen and it damaged the game extremely hard. Not only the skill and ability descriptions are so bad for an RPG, that many people did not see any motivation in developing the character and overcome the struggle at the beginning. RPGs need action and tactic. A big part of the latter is character- development, which you cannot plan with this documentation. People have no clue about damagecalculation, damagereduction, ability and skill effects, yes not even about the basic combatsystem. They don't know nothing about their character. All they can do is "skilling" abilities, hoping that they are useful for something and pushing buttons, hoping that they did it the way the developers intented. It is a shame, cause this game could have been great. Now the extreme flaws make the overall experience just mediocre.
To be honest. Thinking about what piranha bytes did makes my blood boil. What where they thinking, having such a diamond of ideas, but treating it like an unpolished marble. I swear by my soul if I had been in their team, the game would have been a 9/10 and a MUCH MUCH bigger revenue. The longer I think about it the less I can understand why they did not understand what they have done by stripping this action-rpg of a reasonable documentation and a UI that resembles the mechanic of this genuine combat system.

@@yosoy1loco I'm not sure you are right about the hidden DamageBonusMeter being reset if an attack doesn't connect, unless I don't understand your meaning. As you can see in my video, I don't hit the enemy with ANY attacks except the last one, and there is a clear difference with how much damage the last hit does based on whether or not it was immediately after the previous attack or on its own after a delay.
Therefore, it seems the DamageBonusMeter resets purely based on time. My guess is, it resets the moment any attack animation actually completely ends without being interrupted by the next attack animation (normally the next attack starts and interrupts the recovery portion of the previous attack animation if you time your combo right).

@@Rubikant No, you understood me correctly and I am wrong about that specific statement, already realized that some days ago. I quess the damage bonus increases as long as you have stamina to spend on an attack, while it resets after not hitting the proper timing with the last hit as you mentioned.
