- This is a test of the 100 gr TruGlo Backflip 3 blade mechanical broadhead.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 21 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a perfect score of 20 + 1 Bonus Point. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 14.3 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1” = 2.8 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.25” +..69" = 2.94" = 7 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.5" = 4.5 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18.11 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 253 grams = 9.47/10 = 8.52 pts & Edge Retention (9%, +45 grams = 9.1/10 = 8.19 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 13.11 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (8.5" = 9.44 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score.
( 50 layers= 7.14 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 16.2 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (3/10 = 1.5 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (9/10 = 2.7 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS:
+1 pt: mech flight forgiveness
+1 pt no O ring
+1 pt cut size greater than baseline
TOTAL SCORE: 89.19 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
Price: $13.33/head

You're gonna make me sell off all my mechanical Broadheads with these tests ... 😉🤣👍
Check out his Sevr reviews
@@justinjones2882I bought and used sevrs based off his reviews and wasn't thrilled with their performance. Going back to swats this season.
Yeah, they have their limitations. Everything is a trade-off in Broadhead design. You get excellent flight and a big cut, but often lose durability. However, there are some that are incredibly durable as well, especially the Sevrs. Check out my test of those. I’ve shot them through steel plate five times and I’ve shot one through a dried elk scapula, including the thickest part, 12 times.
Thank you John for all the great broadhead testing
Thank you for the encouragement!
Thanks for all you do! Can you test the new SEVR 1.5 Hybrid? I don’t think there will be a problem, but would like to see it go through your test protocols!
I just did. It just posted at 11am CST on the day it was released, Monday, June 24.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Good deal John! Can’t wait to watch it. Been shooting a mixed quiver of IW SB 150’s and SEVR Robustos for a couple seasons now. Love both heads!
Hey John thanks for the test!
FYI those holes for the blades to lock into dimples like a NAP spitfire. Honesty, if they did these with a band they'd be way better
Thanks for sharing that. I wondered if that was the case. Yeah, bands can be a problem, but they are often more reliable than other mechanisms.
Great content. Please do a review of the new Ozcut Kreature!
I've begun working on it.
Definitely a flaw with that little hole on the blades thanks for a great review ✅🏹💪🏾🤙🎯
Yeah, not my fave.
I wonder if the holes at the base of each blade is for ball bearing retention…
Yeah I think so.
Best broadhead testing out there! Keep up the great work. I’m now shooting the Sevrs, based on your testing.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate the support.
Nothing better than the SEVR!,,
Yep. Check out their new 1.5 Hybrid. Just released now.
As always excellent test
Thank you! I really appreciate it.
Why does it look like it spins better after it hit the concrete?
I thought that was weird as well. Sometimes the spin is due to a lack of tightness in certain areas. When heads don’t spin well I tighten them onto the arrow and then loosen them and tighten them and loosen them over and over and over. That often clears up the issue. But this one took a shot into concrete to get to spin well. Ha ha.
Thanks John!
Where do we send broadheads to test?
Thank you for the encouragement! My address is 2502, Sun Grove Road, Melissa TX 75454, United States
I believe the hole is designed as a failure point so the broadhead will continue to penetrate if you hit unbreakable bone such as a humerus
Interesting thought. I can’t say that is a very good idea, but it does seem to work that way.
Not too bad for what they are.
Yep
Looks just like the Grim Reaper Fatal Steel of several years ago. For the tests against the cinderblock I would anchor down a good sized tarp to catch all the shrapnel of broken blades especially if you have kids or grandkids over to the yard. Sometimes the blades don't have a lot of carbon in them and don't pick up all that easy with a magnet. This will save you a little time and be safer
Thank you for sharing that. I have considered doing something like that. But we don’t have any pets and rarely have anybody over. However, I did just had my first grandson last month. Ha ha. That was awesome. But they live in Colorado. I may arrange something like that in the future.
Holy cow that seems like a great broadhead!
Yep, it did well.
I'm guessing those holes on the blade have something to do with the tiny screws. Like maybe they can be screwed in and turn the head into a practice head?
What it is the blade retention. The blades are held in just like a NAP Spitfire. There is a small metal peice with a dimple on it. The dimple holds the blade in place
@@CEMuhlbeier Oh okay
It may be part of the blade retention.
I don’t know what to say 89 really !
I was really surprised by how well it performed.
Boo, mechanicals
ha ha. But hey, there are some incredible mechanicals out there.
26 IQ take
@@madwe2269 I'll let you know I just took an IQ test. And just like my STD test, it came back negative... so tell your mom not to worry 😎
Looks like grim reaper ripoffs minus the quality.
Well, Grim reaper did not invent the over the top deploying three blade mechanical. There are others that came before them. This one is different from the Grim reaper in the blade deployment area as well. Grim reaper uses a retention cup and springs inside. It’s much more intricate than this one.
