    This excerpt from Bill Phillips’ second interview with Mike Mentzer is a philosophical/intellectual tour de force. The topics discussed cover a broad range and are even more relevant to our culture today than they were when this interview was recorded during the mid 1990s:
    The sensation caused by the first interview
    How our beliefs on bodybuilding training were shaped
    Bob Hoffman and the arbitrary
    Training each bodypart 3 times a month - rather than 3 days a week
    Joe Weider’s approach
    Specificity as the most important scientific principle
    Science and precision
    Aristotle
    ArthurJones and the Renaissance of exercise
    Ancient Greece as the cradle of bodybuilding culture
    The gift from Plato
    How Ayn Rand brought us back to the teachings of Aristotle
    Knowledge in schools is boring
    Philosophy should be fun
    The Buddha’s romantic philosophy
    Ayn Rand defined what knowledge itself is
    We live in a militantly anti-rational culture
    Progressive Education, John Dewey and the stultification of children’s minds
    David Rockefeller and one world government
    How knowledge and philosophy overcome fear
    We are heading toward statist tyranny
    How Hitler and theNazis rose to power
    Government regulation and the supplement industry
    Why do people want to build their bodies?
    Don’t neglect the mind

    Isn't it weird that most people who get addicted to his seminars and teachings are usually constantly over training and eating, burned out and obsessed. Bodybuilding shouldn't consume your whole life and mind. I'm glad God sent Mike to save us from a detrimental regiment. Amen & God Bless 🙏🏼

      Just because Mike was an atheist, doesn't mean God didn't use him. God knows and believed in Mike despite him having lack of faith in him. Actually it's to bad Mike like many others had trouble with the belief of God because of organized religion. I've talked to Mike and he actually acknowledged like the bodybuilding orthodoxy the religious orthodoxy have made the actual truth of God clouded for there own agenda. Not saying that Mike admitted to there being a God, just saying he acknowledged that.

      @@strengthequals5336 I agree with that. It's still God who gives us the intellect and ability to think rational, establish scientifical theory and make sense of reality. It's actually the religious spirit that keeps people in bondage, persecuting and ridiculing believers. My life totally changed in a very positive way when I got back into studying the great spiritual truth revealed in the Bible, I'm forever grateful for that.

      @@alguldandoce7982 your opinion is irrelevant Mike said If there is a GOd aka Creator of course I would like to see my Dad again. If you understood scripture holy that is you would realize Mike will almost certainly be given a second chance in the Age to Come. The Resurrection. While i may not agree with Mike on Atheistic thoughts and mindset i can absolutely appreciate the amount of research and thinking this man has done. Mike is a hero. Far ahead of his time. Stop focusing on negativity and hateful comments and focus on what we all agree on. I said the same thing to Matkus Reindhardt years ago and he agreed. His impact on my life has been so much more than just sets and reps, he made me realize that my purpose in life is to develop myself mentally and physically and to develop a philosophy of life worthy of me as a unique human being ... Wow Mike Mentzer is so absolutely based when it comes to philosophy and the necessity of individuals to think freely and to put an end to the herd mentality. He's spot on about the coming Fascism/Totalitarianism/Government as the new "God" if we dont collectively "wake up" and have the appropriate level of love for knowledge. He has either read Nietzche thoroughly, possibly Dostoevsky, or he's a one in a billion unique mind that can come to these logical conclusions about the nature of morality all on his own. Either way-BASED.

      @@MrBlick76 just as Mike read Ayn Rand, Lenin read Marx who did not have a monopoly on the concept of socialism & I agree his version was disastrous. However there are a couple other options that he kinda shoved aside that are an alternative to both our system and that of the Soviets. This would be the prescriptions of Proudhon, Bakunin & Kropotkin along with the work of Henry George. Now when Rand and Mentzer talk about selfishness as a virtue & I think it's in the context of valuing oneself & their work rather than having an inflated sense of self as if I am somehow of greater value or status than anyone else.

    I discovered Mentzer back in the early 90s. I ordered this interview set from Muscle Media 2000 and listened to them several times (not 20 though 😂). His philosophy on weight training and the way he presents it with his endless vocabulary is both satisfying and almost addictive for me. I’m so glad I discovered him when I did, in my early 20s. I have used a modified version of HIT, training no more than 3x per week since then and it has allowed me to maintain a muscular physique into my mid 50s with no sign of slowing down. Long live Mike Mentzer! 💪

    Hey John , I watched a Video yesterday in your channel and wondered, mike said to take short breaks between the sets like 30 seconds, but in another video he said to make them as long you need to exhaust the muscle instead of the cardio .. I maybe misunderstood something, cause I’m not a native English speaker

    • @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
      @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE  Рік тому +9

      It depends on the context of the video. He described "intensity" as being a function of effort and time, so that one way of increasing the intensity in a workout would be by reducing the time in between sets. However, if you find that you're breathing is so laboured after an exercise that it becomes a limiting factor in your performance of the next exercise, then rest long enough for your breathing to return to normal and then proceed. Some get so used to performing high-intensity muscular work that their breathing ceases to become a negative factor, but that is an improvement in conditioning that occurs over time. If you are new to Heavy Duty training, take whatever time you require in between sets so that when you fail on the next exercise it is due to the muscles level of fatigue (inroad) rather than an oxygen debt.

    The thing I'm having trouble with understanding is the lack of training volume.
    I train each body part once a week.
    I get stronger doing this. My body adjusts to the volume & I'm recovered by my next workout.
    Even when I did full body 3x a week I did less sets overall each workout & I got used to that & was recovered after a day & a half of rest.
    So I'm not fully grasping how little training a specific body part ends up being better overall?
    Like with jiu-jitsu, if you don't go all out every session you can train more often. In a year's time you will have way more mat time & therefore way more experience than somebody who goes all out or who trains less frequently.

    • @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
      @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE  Рік тому +7

      It’s not an apt comparison. Martial arts requires a lot of practice in order to develop the technique. That is largely skill training, not unlike learning how to play the piano. The more you do it, the better you get at the technique of doing it. Stimulating muscle growth is a different animal altogether. You literally have to force your body to produce metabolically expensive tissue. That requires big effort in the gym and an adequate recovery time and nutrition for the body to do its job.

      Mike Mentzer identifies the stimulus for hypertropy as intensity of effort. Not volume.
      That one last all out rep, where you couldnt do another with a gun to your head. Drop sets, forced reps, negatives. Intensity and effort.

    • @Trentonius.
      @Trentonius. Рік тому +4

      2. The human body has limited recovery capacity. This varies from person to person (and steroids boost this ability)
      Working out is like digging a hole, recovery fills in the hole and adds a little on top. The more volume, the deeper the hole that needs to be filled before building the mountain atop it. Intensity guages how much to add on top, little effort little gains.
