    I know this video is nearly a year old, but this video is so well written and engaging. I was shocked when I saw the view count. Don't get me wrong where you are is a wonderful accomplishment. I am simply surprised that more people haven't seen it. You've convinced me to play this game and to subscribe. Great job :)

    Punchline's games were sadly underrated. They weren't conventionally great, I played Rule of rose for a bit and unfortunately it was so very slow in the start. I understand it's pacing now but I can clearly see why it didn't really do well.
    But one great thing about the games are the stories they were telling. The social commentary in both are mind blowing. Rule of rose showing the absolute horror of bullying, a assault, emotional abuse, etc. And well you've covered Chulip, I've looked back on this game several times remembering some random tidbit and in that noticing that though it was odd af and cartoony it was deceptively real.
    I love everything about this game, except kissing jigsaw having that small window of time to kiss him and you need to kiss him to progress the game.

      If you're playing "pure' you need him to get the dictionary, but if you know what you need to do, you can skip him.
      I haven't played Rule of Rose, I definitely need to check it out, but I'm already checking out Dandy Dungeon and Moon.

      @@NobleAbsinthe oh I still have my game with guide.
      I just remember struggling to kiss jigsaw and after 3 nights of hiding and waiting for him I just used a save point (not that it helped much I still had to wait) and whenever he popped up I'd grab a bunch of the pieces I thought were the ones and try to give them to him.
      Another cheat I loved was making the heart potion. Instead of taking every frog and cicada to be looked at throw them all away then go to the most and found, the special ones would be separate from the usual pile.
      I may have to play again one day. See just how far I can go without a guide.
      As for Rule of Rose, storywise it's great. Gameplay, you feel the struggle as your first fight is against a group of childish looking monsters and you fight with a fork. I give them credit for making a timid, frighten and uncertain weak woman fight in a way that reflects that but man it'll frustrate you.

    This game is beatable without a guide, but it is very difficult at certain points. Despite that, I enjoy this game a whole lot.
    One tidbit that can help is using your ID card to learn about the residents, as showing the ID cards of others to the people will give you more clues about them and even weird rumors for the harder to solve puzzles later in. 9/10 is a very reasonable score as the game is GREAT but has rough edges that could be fixed up such as the English translation issues.

      I figured out the ID card after giving it to Michelle and was wondering what the point of it was until I got to the hole in the park. I was able to recover my card from the Cop and I was like, "ohhhhh now I can just keep doing this to learn about everyone....That's ALOT of info to collect that it's basically its own thing. "
      But yeah, I'm one of those reviewers who doesn't mind giving 10s to games, but I felt like it was just shy of being a 10. But yeah at the end of the day the numbers don't matter, it's the experience.

    • @cloudkitsune17
      @cloudkitsune17 4 роки тому +1

      @@NobleAbsinthe Agreed. Whether the game is hard or easy, its really about how it makes you feel at the end of the day. Chulip is more about the experience and I can really respect it for that.

      Onion Games’ server is the closest thing 😅 it’s mainly for their newer games so there’s no dedicated Chulip channel but the game does come up often

      @@morganlak4337 oh cool! I’m not too familiar with speedruns of this game but I imagine it’s pretty intense with all the easy insta-deaths and RNG elements 😄 if I remember correctly, doesn’t the Expensive Ring play a role? I didn’t know that item existed until I watched a run
      Edit: looks like it’s understandably not viable haha, I’ll try and watch a more recent speed run when I have time!

    As someone who played the game in 2007/8 eventhough it was ridiculously difficult, and odd, I loved it, the atmosphere, and the characters were great, I rate it a 8 1/2 out of 10, for the time.

    If you strip chulip down, it's a timing game, similar to golf, bowling, or fishing games if you want to go one level up. It's probably most similar to fishing because you have to know the time and environment the fish are active

    if you ended up liking this, you should check out MOON: Remix RPG Adventure, it just released for the Switch after like 20 something years of not being localized

    The only reason I know about this game is because of classic game grumps with jon and arin.

    • @NobleAbsinthe
      @NobleAbsinthe  4 роки тому +3

      Yeah, and they only played like 1/100th of the game. I miss the old days of Game grumps, those two were stellar together. Danny is great in his own way.

      That’s how I learned about this game too! I was mesmerized by how strange it was and had to see more, so I played the game and fell in love with it 😄 if you haven’t tried any of Onion Games’ newer stuff on Switch I can’t recommend them enough, moon and Dandy Dungeon are most similar to Chulip (the former is a first-ever English localized port of a PS1 game that plays nearly identical, and the latter a more modern gameplay-focused take with intuitive puzzle/dungeon design).

    I played this game in Japanese, and I was able to beat it without a guide. However, I played it in Japanese and took heavy notes, so yeah. Definitely wasn't easy, and very frustrating at times.
    From what I can gather, the ENG version has a glitch that doesn't display a crucial hint properly, so I think it actually is technically impossible. So maybe the saying my JP experience isn't a very good defense for that quest... Oh well, but that was my two cents

      There was a translation issue with a few key items, but honestly I think by modern standards of games it's near impossible. I look at games through an American perspective, I tend to be very willing to go the extra mile when playing games, but the average American doesn't have patience.
