you might like to know thta moon remix RPG, a beautiful game that was made by some of the of original chulip staff when they were at love-de-lic long before they made chulip and whos premise inspired undertale, is getting localized for the first time in over 22 years for the switch.
Great work Thor. Chulip sounds like one of those unique games that have qualities that make them genuinely amazing, while also being somewhat of a chore to play.
This looks like a game I really want to play. Seems like it would be enjoyable by overcoming it's save system through the classical cheating savestates.
My fav video of yours yet Thor! Never realized how on the clit-nose this game was with its commentary. It’s more than charming enough to forgive. I get a lot of Kobo Abe vibes from Chulip. What with dregs and outcasts either living underground (Ark Sakura) or taking up residence in inanimate objects (The Box Man) to escape society and the judgments of the public.
Lovely video, here's a chu~~ :-* From what I've read, Japanese games (and anime) from this era had a lot of social commentary (similar to western cartoons) in them that would go over a young player's head. Like you can think Katamari Damacy as an allegory for over-consumerism.
They really did yeah. Dealing with work pressure is a really common topic in Japanese games I've noticed. ...which, isn't surprising haha. But the fact that they managed to give "giant dragon destroys big city with explosions" a strong environmental message says a lot. It takes skill to make something super silly and meaningful at the same time.
I love your vids, man, seriously good stuff. That entire part starting at 7:46 is so well-said, then bringing in the Dali theme and ending on the the beautiful yet sad reality of work and creativity, duties and dreams. I imagine you speak for a huge chunk of our generation, and doing so through game discussion makes it very close to my heart. Cheesy as fuck I know, but it really is the medium of our generation in a way. Under the layers of natural wit and word swaps, your depth really caught me (and I assume many others) by surprise, and that contrast brings your ideas out so well.
"Sure it brings in the money, but it crushes dreams, ambitions, libidos and creative drives." I called in to work today because I'm kind of burnt out. I've been doing menial jobs for 10 years now since I got out of high school. I try to enjoy the little pleasures, but I really do be happiest when I'm sleeping
These love-de-lic related games are all so interesting. Sadly I can't play this one cause my ps2 is resting in peace. I hope someone translates moon for ps1 someday, since that's the game that interests me the most
Jontron isn't a nazi, he's just an idiot. But yeah, this game is great. And you're right, it could really benefit from an in-game hint system. Not like the manual, which is just a straight-up walkthrough, but rather a system that gently nudges you into the right direction, so that you have something to go by, while still having to figure out the actual solution on your own. For example, if you don't know what to do with the micro gum, instead of straight-up telling you how, where and when to use it, it could just tell you to show it to different people. That way you actually learn how you were supposed to come to these conclusions on your own. But instead most players who get stuck just look up the solutions right away and are like "How the fuck was I ever supposed to figure that out!? This game doesn't make any sense." In actuality you can find out a surprising amount of information, simply by showing people your items. Some give you hints, some give you trivia, some just a funny line or two. For example, when you show the dead Cicadas to Leo, he'll tell you that Batayan knows more about them. And when you show the popsicle to your crush, she'll give you a hint towards one of the more hard to figure out solutions.
A lot of nazis were just idiots. Simple minded burocrats just doing their jobs, worrying about paying bills and feeding their families. Except their jobs made them complicit or participant in war and genocide. They didn't think about it in their day to day lives, but they still were part of the nazi machine or ideology.
If anyone wants to see a full complete lets play of Chulip. I highly recommend StephenPlays, he and his wife Mal do an excellent job showing off the whole game.
really good viddo. this game looks cute af I would totally play with save states. i like how everthing looks like a toy. I don't know if you also notice this but I think the Japanese have a knack for this dry, absurdist, cute humor. Stuff like characters doing stupid things with straight faces and stiff postures, and the dialogue is spoken in a monotone, or at least normal, casual way to contrast with the absurdity. I think Nichijou does this at times...when they arent screaming a bunch? Basically, it's overreacting and underreacting to the wrong things. I prefer watching Aggretsuko's original dub, she sounds more casual there. I love Cromartie High School's natural sounding dub but I started watching it subbed and I kinda appreciated it's dryness. There's quote from the Yakuza dev saying something about doing stupid things seriously. I read that sarcasm isn't a thing in Japan but I think it is. It's like a different flavor where it's in your face but it's also isn't at the same time.
Great game, lovely video! When I finished it some years ago I thought "oh my this shit is fucking DEEP for game about kissing people". Clearly an underrated classic
Still one of my favorite games chulip is a masterpiece, your review made me a fan of your videos and i still continue to enjoy your channel. chulip was one of those games that had a mix of complete qwerky, meh and hilarious mood. That sniper guy at the scarecrow field was a bitch to kiss and man something about the soundtrack is too good and also the dialogue is hilarious ,btw were you able to fire everyone at funny bone factory 😂 also funny how everyone in long life town gave up most of they're dreams especially batayan and goro.
I've loved this game forever, but it's not much "fun" - It has its own internal logic that makes sense in the context of its little world, but to play it's still often frustrating in an intentional "that time in twin peaks where agent Cooper is bleeding on the floor while the elderly staff slowly asks a bunch of question and slowly fetches the phone and oh god it keeps going why can't it just progress" kind of way. The disparity in tone reminds me of the moomins where moomintroll is always talking melodramatically (but with a hint of maybe ...not?) about suicide and the deep dark pit of his depression every time snorkmaiden is off running around with her latest beau.
This is the era of twitter, you have to say something politically charged, reactionary, and look at people in black and white terms, otherwise you are destroying the environment, and not soapboxing your hate of figures that can potentially give, gasps, opinions means you have to take that form , and amplify it tenfold the other way until it becomes a shouting match.
This video could've done without the annoying politics and nonsense takes. Ironically it's the attitude or behavior of people like you that was the inspiration for this game in the first place. Quite ironic.
"relatable to any creative person " as i keep consuming like a drone the UA-camr content....i notice most of you blend into each other, giving opinionated (mostly caucasian) reviews......trying to be objective using your own criteria.... right objective. And then you talk about FEELINGS and how this or that made you feel turning your videos into personal agendas or pseudo cheap catharsis sessions......what a job you people have huh.
What a long way to say nothing at all, you answered your own question stating that these are indeed opinionated reviews, hence why they have opinions in them. If you don't like the opinions you can choose not to watch but this channel is thors and in turn it is thors to do with what he wishes.
