Singing this for my cat. I buried him in my lone backyard. RIP Nips, my cowboy.
RIP Nips 💜
RIP to a true compadre
❤
To sing an old tune to old souls in a graveyard is such a beautiful thing.
It matters not; I have been told, where the body lays when the heart goes cold. Thanks for this song man it was running through my head the entire time through losing my grandad who was basically my father. Thank you
now i don’t have to get my phone to replay the short version over n over again :) [i probably still will cause it has its own charm]
You can always go to the settings on the video at the top right and press loop and it will play it over and over to your hearts desire
somebody get this man to the Grand Old Opry
anyone who can sing such an old song with such passion and power deserves to sing it on country music's highest stage
Truely the song of a youthful America
Truly a mournful performance,
here I think of my grandfather after a long day of work, knowing I will soon follow him.
I hope all who see this know that you are loved and thank you for reading.
Absolutely love this song. Randomly came across it on spotify.
American folk song with a Scottish/Irish folk sound to it, a mix I never knew I needed to hear so bad. It’s great, dude 👍🏻
I know Sam is Scottish, but this reminds me of the 2 Irish brothers who join Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call’s cattle drive up to Montana in “Lonesome Dove.”
Incredible voice and a beautiful rendition of a great song
Sgoinnell 🏴
Heard this in an old school cartoon, can't remember exactly but this my shit
We'd love to have you play in the hills of Kentucky when you come to The States.
I love that such a simple story can carry such a complex feeling when you set it to music.
It’s a shame that young man wasn’t buried at his home, but it’s almost like the prairie is his home now. It’s a world that’s harsh and difficult to make a life in, but one that’s full of love and companionship nonetheless.
As Country Boy from the Carolinas, please keep making music like this.
My grandmother, may she rest peacefully, sang this to my mother frequently
Came for rdr1 stuff got this absolute banger.
The full version makes me even sadder! I love it tho. I hope his soul knows I cry for him. ❤
Where do I find the full version?
I am an eternal pessimist who thinks good country is dead and anything that isn’t Texas country sucks….
This version of this song is phenomenal. Sam is an instant legend. Fair play to you, Sir!
I want this song to be played at my funeral
Reminds me of Blevins in All the Pretty Horses
this song always reminds me of red dead 1, beautiful rendition of this song.
You are awesome man! What a killer voice!! Keep up your hard work man! I’m a fan!!!
The Colter Wall cover is impeccable, but I love this traditional rendition
I have heard this song since I was a child, but this is the first time hearing the full version. Thank you!
I appreciate your beautiful renditions guiding me to the stories of so many of our ancestors, who were displaced from any sense of home, and who still haunt the lands of turtle island with all the horror they experienced, as well as the horror they caused. I take my studies of these histories very seriously because the FULL story needs to be remembered if we want to compost the trash that poverty, displacement, imperialism and colonialism leaves in its wake.
Dude I need a guitar lesson for this banjo version. This is the best and most fast pace version of this song.
Holy shit now this right here is a MUSICIAN. Your voice and picking is lovely. Keep it up! I’d love to see you in a studio one day
Reminds me of a pioneer sitting in front of a camp fire singing out west
This song and your rendition spark something so deep and true in me. Thank you for playing and singing
I'll throw a 🌹 to the youth that lays.
I found another verse that reminds me of your recent loss. I'm thinking of incorporating it into my rendition of the song, which is based on yours: "'I've often wished to be laid, when I died/In the little church[sic] on the green hillside;/By my father's grave there let mine be--/O bury me not on the lone prairie." I first saw it in the Lomaxes' record. I'll have to tweak it to fit, but thought you might be interested.
Friends, this song is about me. I’m from New England, finishing out my military service in Oklahoma. I haven’t written my Will yet, but if I get it, don’t bury me here. I want my ashes spread in Massachusetts, not to share the fate of the man in this song 💀
You know the slightly slower tempo of the shorter version i enjoyed alot more
Thank you. I always want to watch 'She Wore a Yellow Ribbon' after hearing this.
What a great version, looking forward to your next gig in Ireland
Hey Sam! Just discovered your craft and I can't describe the emotions I get listening to this song. I'm forever grateful for musicians like yourself.
I think I've listened to close to EVERY version of this song..... yours is by far THE BEST! I can feel the grief and sorrow in your voice. It's just phenomenal!❤
Well I found the video I'm gonna play on repeat for the next few weeks. Awesome picking and singing mate! I'm trying to learn this song on my 5 string.
Something that this makes me wonder about is how many of these songs were written to be sung by foreign voices. Early American would have been such a melting pot of voices and accents and cultures that many of these songs probably sound a little different with modern American accents.
Absolutely love this version. The tempo and lyric arrangement is phenomenal
been listening on repeat. Think i've got the picking pattern down on banjo as well. What a hauntingly beautiful song.
hi sir,,,,you found the picking pattern?
I would like to know and what banjo tuning does he use?
thank you very much.
greetings from belgium
Hello Sam ..It is me ..Danny Mangos from Florida...Sounds good...I got the can drum fire waiting over her. When ya going to come tour and Busk FL with me. I got all my washboard rigs ready and waiting to fire off.
You have such an amazing version of this song. I can't find a better version than this one.
Imagine seeing a stranger in an old duster coat, cowboy hat, and boots, playing this song and singing in the middle of a haunted graveyard. Then, once the song finishes, the stranger seems to turn into dust and drift away with the wind.
Just wait till I come back to this graveyard once I’m finished this USA tour, dripped out in cowboy gear and film this exact video haha!
I found this on Ifunny and was worth it. Very into old cowboy/ and folky music like this. Reminds me of National Park Radio
Ah god the full version is even better. Really gets me inspired to work on my cowboy story even more. Keep up the good work my guy!
Vocals lovely and remind me of “The Corries” - great sound and great playing! 💪

Sam where could I find the chords you use for the song? Learning banjo and YOUR music has inspired me to learn this, and more, on my open back
Let me know if you figured it out. I also wish to learn this song
Fm , Ab , Db. the opening lick is F->G F Eb C
Goodjob men! 🤠
What's cool is I can hear this being how some of the first generation immigrants would have sounded embracing their adventures west as new Americans
Would it be rude to ask what tuning you play this out off I really wanna try and learn this , my best guess is a doc Boggs tuning like fDGAD or fCGAD but that’s only a guess.
Its odd hearing this in your accent, beautifully done my man!
Ah cheers man, the full version!
Lovely stuff my dude!
YESSSSSS, IVE BEEN WAITING!
Can I get some tablature of this song cuz I really want to learn it
How did you develop this take on the song? It’s so different from all the other versions in terms of rhythm and time. Would love to hear more songs like this from you.
Sam. You should try singing a old marty robbins song. Utah carol
you should do a guide on how you play this tune
Sam, I absolutely adore your music and you’ve inspired me to pick up the banjo. I want to learn lone prairie and gambling davey, could you tell me what tuning you’re in for these songs? Much love!
any way you could give us the banjo tabs??? song looks so fun to play.
What is this tuning? Been loving this song
I would love to see you do the same with the Wild Bill Jones song. I've listed to this song countless songs on Spotify already
Oh
