VERONICA Merritt is a mother to 11 children - and she's spent approximately eight and a half years of her life being pregnant. Veronica, from Syracuse, New York, had her first child at the young age of 14 and the last one at the age of 34. With so many children, Veronica’s house can be a hectic place, 13-year-old Mara told Truly: “It’s like being at a party but without music.” To keep track of her large family, Veronica has come up with an ingenious colour coding system; giving every child their own designated colour. “The colour coding system is incorporated into almost everything, anything I can find in their colour I’ll buy; their clothes, their toys, their sheets, towels, toothbrushes, cups and plates, it’s almost obsessive,” she said. Veronica has a big following on TikTok, where she talks about life as a large family. Unfortunately not everyone understands Veronica’s choice of having so many children: “I receive a lot of negative comments regarding my family, they will say things like ‘All the same dad?’ or ‘Do you own a TV?’” And Veronica herself is on the fence about falling pregnant again: “Part of me says ‘You’re done, you’re good’ and the other part of me is like ‘No, six more’, I’m just going to sort of see what happens and let nature decide.”

I do kind of wonder, with all due respect, what goes on in someone's mind who has 11 children but feels the urge to get 6 more. Does she feel like she is missing out on something? Does she enjoy being pregnant and caring for very small kids and babies (as some people genuinely do) so she'd like to go on? How does she think 6 or even just 3 more children would enrich her life? Some people want a big family, alright. But she already has that? No negative judgement here, really. Still, on a psychological level, this seems fascinating to me.

Even though I don’t want that many kids of my own it’s awesome to see all your siblings grow up and get married and become someone in this world. We are all friends and people always tell me, my mom is the happiest person they know. I have three children, all adults now, but when they were small, I color-coded them without intentionally doing it. And it was based on their preferred or favorite colors. The eldest loved the hot and warm colors and usually had clothes and other stuff in red, orange, or yellow. The middle one loved plants, so usually had green things. The youngest has been obsessed with the sky, astronomy, the stars, since age two, so usually had blue. I had all three in three years and five months. It got hectic! When I would take them to a crowded playground, I would dress them all in the same bright color, like yellow, so I could quickly locate them. Even as adults, they still have similar color preferences.

Every time I see large families like this I wonder what is going on inside of the home. I knew a boy who had 13 other siblings and while the family were kind people, their relationships with each other were far from perfect or even ideal. The larger the family the more likely a child’s personal needs will slip through the cracks and the parent can’t be there for every child’s wants, leaving those children to deal with them alone. I wouldn’t be surprised if those kids will feel a lack of support when they grow older, especially the oldest children.

True any parent can be cruddy no matter the size, but the larger the family the more likely it is that needs are not being met for some of the children, no matter if the parent is doing their best or not.

I have 12 siblings and life is just normal to be honest, I don't think you notice the difference when it's just life. Both my parents come from families with 6 and 8 siblings and wanted a big family. I just think how are you to know if you had less siblings your parents would any different? If your parents aren't giving you support, love or attention it's because they're not good parents so I can't see how it would be different in a smaller family. My family are all quite close but I'm closer to the siblings and cousins I grew up closer in age. My youngest sibling is 10 and my oldest sibling is 36 so we have a massive age gap which might helped things as some of the older lot had already left home when some of the younger children were born. My 10 year old brother is actually younger than his 14 year old niece. But to be honest I always was put in sports, read to at night, got to go on trips etc so don't think I would change a thing. Family parties are also always good when you have a massive family with lots of cousins. However I'm going to keep my future family small cause no way am I going through the pain of labour multiple times.

As an upper middle child to large family, this. I missed out on a lot, had to grow up fast and suffered mental health without help. My parents weren’t bad necessarily either. Older siblings in larger families usually are second parents in a way at usually a young age.

I love it. I love big families. I always wanted one, I grew up with no cousins and only 1 sister until I was 13 and my brother was born. I have 4 kids myself and if childbirth and pregnancy wasn't soo hard on me I'd have more. Big families are such a blessing.

Why not ? I myself have always wanted to have 12 kids . I think you have a wonderful family and the kids appear to be very happy with their mom . I also like your color coding idea . My mom only had 4 kids and I remember well how often other relatives would get our names wrong or just call out, " Hey you ! ", to us when they still couldn't remember . The fact you can remember their names is good enough . It must be so rewarding though, to have so many little ones running around the house, never a dull moment I bet . I wish you and yours all the best . 🤗

If it makes you feel better, realize that more siblings = a higher chance of dealing with more arguments; a higher chance of one of them (or more) to steal your food, your toy, etc (sure, good parents would teach their children to treat others with respect but some children still try to sneakily still do this to their sibling); a lot of noise, so if you want to take a nap? Forget about it; a higher chance of having less fun snacks since more children = more expenses for actual groceries. Also, if some of the siblings or one of them had particularly good grades compared to the rest, there could be jealousy and resentment from the ones that aren't doing as good. I might sound superficial with some of these details, but really, just trying to let you know that you shouldn't be jealous.

I don't know how to say this without being mean if you have children you can get all kinds of assistance plus maybe the fathers are paying child support and that's how she takes care of them the one thing we do right as humans support people with children so the kids don't have to do with out except for WIC program I've never had children but I I did learn from single mothers when I worked at the cashier for five years that baby powder is so expensive and you can get like five cans a month from work and it's like $127 but that won't even last half the month

I think it’s a beautiful thing to have a large family providing you can take care of them.
I do feel that you should consider not having more if you have major health issues because your children are depending on you.
Quite while you’re ahead cause if something were to happen to you, they will be separated and put in the system.
You wouldn’t want that. At least, now you’re healthy enough to maintain your family as is. I don’t see or hear mention of the father.
That’s all the more why you shouldn’t. Raising children with two parents can be difficult enough. Although, surprisingly enough you have a nice home and they’re happy and you appear to love them so much. Take care of yourself, you have a beautiful family and they need you. You want to be healthy enough to see them grow up. Nobody else is going to be as good of mom as you. They love you and you are all they have and you want to be here as long as you can. With that being said, and taking in consideration of your health, think whether or not it’d be a wise decision to have more. #I’mjustsaying
