Family Of 9 Live Off Grid To 'Reject Society' | MY EXTRAORDINARY FAMILY

- AN OFF-GRID family say the reason for moving away from city life was to remove themselves from the “negative things of the world” - such as the public school system and western medicine. Kip Smyth grew up in Thousand Oaks, CA, as a 'city boy'. He worked as a manager at a retail store and hated the consumer culture that came with it. So Kip and his wife Carrie researched the best place to relocate their family to a sustainable way of life. They landed on the Ozarks, and seven years ago bought the land for their dream to become a reality. The family-of-nine now live in a 500sq. ft. tiny home where they keep dairy cows, chickens and turkeys. Kip told Truly: “I'm pulling my children out of the negative things of the world. If you look at what's happening in America right now, the kind of craziness, it's not getting a better society.”

It's still not that heavy because you can switch off your wifi or control access on the net for your kids but when you live in regular American society you can't help who your kids interact with or what info gets dumped on them.
@@kirathekingkiller69 yeah the whole point of not being able to control and regulate every and each one of your kids' interactions is that they can have room to grow.
By the way, I live in the "regular" society, but I definitely wouldn't upload videos of my young children on the internet. What if they hate me when they grow up because I gave them zero privacy and personal life for the sake of protecting them from my own fears?
Yah, makes no sense.
What part of the video hurt your feelings? Usually people turn into judgey fucks when their feelings get hurt lol
Some interesting facts. Homeschooled children on average spend 5 x more time in social activities than public school. It's a misconception to say homeschooled children don't get the chance to socialise and interact with society.
Girl, what "society" do you see any of those gets apart of or come in contact with?
@@shanec9840 Other homeschoolers.

Truth!!! Homeschoolers also have an advantage because we interacted with all ages of people. As a result, we developed a broader range of social skills than the school kids.
omg this is so true i used to be homeschooled and did a bunch of social activities at clubs and stuff but now that i go to school i stopped going to them and now i barely leave the house T-T
I think this how we were all supposed to live. Free, growing our own healthy foods, focused on our family.

This is the way people used to live. My grandma grew up this way and tuned out just fine. It's a better life than some of the kids I know who are eating junk food and playing video games all the time and are learning to be lazy and disrespectful.
My grandma lived this way and turned out to be a recluse.

Honestly worrying about children being “socialized” when homeschooled is just an excuse to hate on something people have been brainwashed to believe is wrong and bad because it goes against the status quo. I was homeschooled from sixth grade through high school and I loved it. All of the other homeschooled kids I knew who were always homeschooled were very smart, social, and usually very kind and respectful, unlike their public school peers.
As someone who was homeschooled K-12, and interacts with fellow home/unschoolers on a regular basis - and who interacts with public school kids as well - I agree with this 100%.
Lol I was homeschooled and very socially inept. I'm extremely introverted and awkward. I just hope these lods get to make friends and have people around them so they can form those bonds. Lucky the internet exists these days so maybe they can find like minded people near them.
So true. "Socialization" is what created Trump.
I agree. Some of the most socially maladjusted folks I have ever met were public school graduates.
One if my bestfriends from ages 12 to 18 was homeschooled until she was 16. She went to church and had 3 sisters. She's one of the nicest and most social people I know. She's smart as well. The only thing is is that she dated a 20+ year old at 14 and he was allowed at their house... she also married a 40 year old at 20.... and it turns out she's dyslexic and her parents didn't know. I wrote a paper on dyslexia because I have it, and she said that describes her perfectly. I said she must have dyslexia then, and she got defensive and denied it:/ I'm sure there's a lot of good examples of homeschooled people, this is just my experience with them.
And then there's me. Went to school from age 3-22, I had major social anxiety up until a year ago. It took getting on meds to be able to interact with coworkers like a semi normal person. I use to not even talk in work environments. 🤦♀️ I also have only had online friends since graduating public high school. There's also a ton of bad examples of public school kids.
One of these 7 kids 20 years from now will give a ted talk about how their parents were crazy and they were living in a cult.

So many people killing their own kids or kids getting raped ,kidnapped exex .Their way more safe from child destroying cults where they are.

You should seriously look into simple survival earth ships which are radically sustainable houses that cut down on the work of living off grid and then also look into vegan permaculture and work that correlates to that such as the work of Brad Lancaster and Jeff Lawton greening the desert. I’m excited to see if you make anything of the previous.
Once the kids become teenager's, they're going want to meet friends and hang out etc. Not be around the parents and siblings 24/7. I just hope that they're serious about letting them choose for themselves once they're old enough.

I think this type of lifestyle is a great one. The biggest disagreement I have, is if you completely cut yourself off from society, then how are you going to be the light of Christ in a dark and dying world? Christ calls us to be lights that cannot be hid. The gospel doesn't get spread when Christians hide themselves away. Christianity isn't a "my way of life" type of thing. It's the truth and life for all men and women and how selfish are we if we try and keep the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ for ourselves?

I guess not.

I'm sure he would get some kind of vaccine shot to prevent rabies if that happened. The vaccines have so much lead and mercury and now they're putting in nano bites that are here to your cells and you can't get this out of your system. Lol, off the grid doesn't mean turning Amish. You pick what parts suit you. It's not all or nothing, technology, socializing and money are still present, just kept to a minimum and only what's necessary. Tons of off grid folks have UA-cam channels, it's a way to STAY off grid instead of having to work in a shitty office for a living.
"Off-the-grid or off-grid is a characteristic of buildings and a lifestyle designed in an independent manner without reliance on one or more public utilities. The term "off-the-grid" traditionally refers to not being connected to the electrical grid, but can also include other utilities like water, gas, and sewer systems, and can scale from residential homes to small communities. Off-the-grid living allows for buildings and people to be self-sufficient, which is advantageous in isolated locations where normal utilities cannot reach and is attractive to those who want to reduce environmental impact and cost of living. Generally, an off-grid building must be able to supply energy and potable water for itself, as well as manage food, waste and wastewater."

Absolutely! It’s just…we act like the right homeschool/private setup is 100% without downsides. And that’s true…for the children in that specific family. I know I’m probably speaking to an ill matched audience here. Still. People don’t seem to realize that families w the resources, knowledge, and passion to private/home school are the EXACT ones we, as a society, desperately need as stakeholders in public schools! It just comes down to prioritizing one’s kids over all others. Yeah, we do that as an individualistic society. But for people who most reject society (and rightfully)? It’s so sad to ultimately choose “me and mine” as the massive priority over far more children. If this lifestyle is so beautiful, which it probably is, don’t you want a piece of it for other kids?

These children are growing up in total communion with nature rather than in concrete and asphalt, regardless of what they will “chose” to do when they grow up (ex: the big brother is pursuing a career in technology, kudos to him since he will most likely combine his early life experience to his future development as a “new era technology related professional) My real point is, we always tend to go back to the beginning of our early experience, then no matter if they chose to stay in the rural life or not, whatever they pursue, they will most likely think and act pro nature, then I feel the future of the world is better hands. Exactly. You can't hide your kids away from the world. They need to know how the world works and how to think for themselves. These parents would blow a gasket if one of the kids decided they disagreed with their parents and wanted to live in modern society. In families like this one, the kids are always required to accept the viewpoint of the parents without question and to never ever think for themselves. Inevitably, one or more of these kids will rebel and all hell will break loose. The parents will throw them out so they can't influence the other kids. These parents have no idea what's coming as their kids grow up and realize mom and dad are wackos. It has happened so many times with families like this. The parents believe they will always have control of the children, but they won't. And as soon as they lose their grip, this house of cards is going to collapse in on them.
ctoits they are teaching their children right from wrong so that they make good decisions as an adult when they are more mature and less likely to fall for peer pressure. Children don’t have to be exposed to the influence of others outside of the family in order to learn how to survive.

"It's not that I don't trust people but I just don't trust people because people are people"🤔 I agree with him.
Does anyone in the comments not envy them? I am glad that I grew up the way I did. News flash, not everyone in public school is dumb as bricks. Not everyone in public school gets into trouble. I loved growing up with people who don’t look like me and don’t have the same life experience as me. I learned to communicate with those I don’t always agree with. And I did have a fun childhood. I am so glad my parents believe in science. And I’m so glad they didn’t have me baptized. I don’t want to raise a frickin cow. I want to get a degree and teach public education.
I am the exact same way, I like how I was raised and the society I grew up in. Not saying it’s perfect, but it worked for me
As long as their children are happy thats what really matters everyone has a different life and does things differently. I wouldnt be able too live that life but looks right for them👍
And did you ever get the feeling that what the husband says is law with regarding the rest of the family
Either being a strong, Conservative father figure, or a Beta male that will eventually break this huge family apart. There's no compromise, especially when some of the kids seemed to have immunity disorder. 🤔
His house. His rules.
@@MaleOrderBride Nope. There are two adults in the family, they should both make the rules. He is a part of a relationship, it doesn't matter who owns the house, you are either equals or there's a toxic power dynamic.
Both the parents look like their 100 % one, on their choice ,which they have every right to do .The kids look happy too playing like innocent kids with each other.
Very patriarchal and primitive. Not doing the best for their children. That’s a shame.

I worked PEDS,but have not for 10byr now. Some of the children (not all) look underweight and very pale.Possibly not enough of the correct vitamins or enough nutrients/ nutrician. One resembles a chemo patient to me.why is the child missing so much ⁵⁵hair?It did not look shaved. Some definitely look under weight / slightly gaunt.Just my opinion of course.were they mine I'd be getting them a full physical to make sure they were all fully healthy.Full blood work to ensure they were getting all the vitamins they needed.I definitely believe some are iron deficient.
I was thinking the same thing. They all look way too pale.
guys on behalf of this family i want to say yes the kids have an autoimmune disorder some ppl are being really rude on the comments saying how bad they look.... this film did not explain that the kids can’t take vaccines etc they grow food because there trying to help the kids stay as healthy as possible the little girl and some of the kids aren’t able to grow hair etc ...they have gone to a doctor looked for help last i believe they were told there wasn’t anything that could actually be done
He says he would let them live a conventional American lifestyle, but his “heart would be hurt” if they did. That is a prime example of emotional abuse. Children, even once adults, do not want to hurt their parents. They want approval and support and love. Saying that is saying “I love you while you do what I want. I support you while you do what I want.”
@chloe_3787 not to mention the likelihood that they have instilled so much fear in the kids about the sin amd evil of the world outside of their little homestead. 😢
This dad looks like he thinks he’s better then the world 🙄. These kids needs friends . Fine live in a quite place , learn stuff most kids won’t learn but like the kids NEED to know the true world to.
Siblings are far better than friends. Kids without a brother or sister need friends, these kids don't.

@@dollsNcats okay so? Does that mean he is abusing his kids or hurting other people not necessarily! I love the way they are living, I was homeschooled when I was younger and I sure did learn about life lessons and how the real world works. I would never give the that up. Being a homeschooled really made who I am today.
@borntobemild: Now come on, that doesn’t sound very mild!
Their children are beautiful, intelligent, and kind. Their parents are very thoughtful, they do what is best for their children. Their children actually learn real life skills (plumming, fencing, cooking, gardening) rather than memorizing information just to pass a test. Awesome family, love their way of living! 💙
Me too!
I think this family is admirable, good old fashioned way of living with values that no longer exist in our societies!
I always feel bad for the kids in families like this.
Why?? They look happier than most kids. What do you think they're missing?
Why???
@@adararelgnel2695 you never no what happens off camera you gotta admit it would be kinda boring it you never say other people i mean they could want to run away or see other people have human contact or they could be totally happy with how they are living you never know
Ummmm why 😂 they are completely self sustaining and free. You are seriously brainwashed if you feel bad for someone that lives like this. I feel sorry for you
Why
I was homeschooled as a child and I'm so glad that I was. I was able to pursue what I was most passionate about and learn about the things I found interesting. I grew up with a love of documentaries and all I watched PBS every night until I was in my teens. It's really disheartening to see people assume that those who are homeschooled aren't as smart as the ones who attended public school, because honestly I've had my time in public school and didn't learn nearly as much. And nothing was retained because it was all to be memorized for a test and that was it. On the social aspect of homeschooling, I think if you're going to homeschool your children that getting them involved in other social activities is important. I was in girl scouts, a swimming group, a church youth group and in a group of other homeschooled kids that did activities every week. I also grew up on a farm and it was a wonderful and valuable experience.
But that's the pros. The cons of this type of living is the anti-vaxing... which, sure, if you're not in public often you won't have as much to worry about, but those kids are going to grow up and become adults and will probably not want to live this same lifestyle. What about the risk of complications in adulthood from not having been vaccinated as a child?
Also, teaching your children to be fearful of the world and distrusting of everyone is not a good thing... when they grow up and have to go out into the real world as adults, they may have a lot of trouble coping because of these fears that were instilled in them.
So there are a lot of pros and cons here...
You don't need to reply but I was wondering did you ever feel like you missed out or was lacking in social skills?
@@ladymusiclover did you not read the whole comment? Because if you did, you wouldn't have this question.
But with home schooling, surely you still have to follow a curriculum. In England, if you don’t have your maths or English then you can’t get a job. It’s also good to have passed science
@@wolfzmusic9706 I wouldn't say you can't get a job, there are always jobs one can do! Good for you guys! You're raising your children with morals, values and sense of real life. Your kids will survive if things get as bad as everyone is predicting because they'll know how. We have 8 kids, homeschool and are homesteading, just not quite to the extreme you all are for now. We are working our way there.
Just know you have supporters out here who understand what you're doing and why! We get lots of negative opinions as well but we just hold our heads up and keep going.
God bless you and keep you!
I know what you mean, im a homesteader and homeschooler too and I find this family very inspirational.

Such a heartwarming moment. Most kids are on their devices these days. It's nice to see children caring, spending time with their family for a change.

Absolutely love this family, been watching them for more than a year, they have the right amount of everything : morals, love, education, internet exposure, nature exposure, work and responsibilities ethics, etc. And above all of it they have Yeshua who takes care of them. The world is full of "well socialized kids" who live a lonely, miserable and meaningless life somewhere on the streets... Leave this happy family alone to thrive!
I think their decision to do this was a GREAT one. I envy this lifestyle. They really love their kids.

For someone that says he’s isolated his family completely because he doesn’t trust people, he sure has no problem broadcasting his wife and children for all the world to see. That’s the weirdest part.
I understand leaving the cities, the towns. I understand homesteading, I can even dig homeschooling. But, as the dad said, he doesn’t trust people. But people are inevitable. And people need people! He may not like people, but his kids have to learn to interact with strangers, build different kinds of relationships, deal with people. They’ve denied their kids that opportunity to learn human interaction.
He and his wife isolated their family from everyone, and that’s sick.
"It's not that I don't trust people. It's...I don't trust people." 😂🤣

Ah the “Buddy system” better called “I don’t want to raise the children I gave birth to and I pin it on the older children I had system” perfect.
Maybe watch their channel and learn before you make yourself look stupid with your judgment.
It might be the case but i don’t think so... my daughter’s kindergarden has mixed aged classes and they use the same system
The Buddy system is in no way handing your little ones off to the older ones to be raised. It's a way of building relationships and, yes, taking a little weight off mom's shoulders. Mom can go nurse the baby and put her down for a nap while the three biggest kids read, do puzzles, etc, with the littles. When mom needs to work one on one with a child about a more difficult school concept, any easy little questions or problems the younger children are having can be resolved by the other children. That isn't saying mom isn't involved in everything for all the kids; just that she has an extra set of hands in the form of the bigger kids.
I only have two children, and even at that I have been known to use the buddy system. While I'm packing lunches, my older daughter might be helping my younger tie her shoes. When the two of them empty the dishwasher, my older puts everything away in the upper cabinets and my younger gets the lowers. It's called teamwork, and it is part of being in a family. It isn't farming your little kids out to their older siblings. It's life.
uh actually bro the buddy system helps the younger one learn and the older one learn how to teach. Which is something they do in public schools too because it's important to learn. maybe don't be so ignorant next time 🤡
What an ugly thing to say. We use a system like this because it helps both children. There is no better way to retain information than to teach it to someone else.
Lived most of my life in the middle of a older order amish community who also don't get vaccines. One winter I caught whopping cough doing a outbreak and OH my how I wish my vaccines where up to date. Never smoked and now my lungs are scared for life :( Amish also live this life style and are the most unhealthy people I have ever met. This is saying a lot since my parents where missionaries for awhile.

@@samiraadams6980 not vaccinating is also gambling with her children's lives in a major way
My second child had a bad reaction after 18 month vaccines, I held off my third child to delayed giving.... Years later a nurse at the office printed his shot records and she said oh wow someone gave him his kindergarten shots and everything too early and at once, at 18 months! They scanned and documented it as a med error but I was never told.
thats very irresponsible of whoever made that error but vaccines are still very much needed when theyre age appropriate as its best to avoid the virus from doing any harm. Personally Tetanus and polio vaccines are a must as we've seen how detrimental they can be to a tiny little human.

"We like to take preventative measures" *doesn't vaccinate their kids*
Don't inject their children with known neurotoxins. Don't get in over your head.
Vaccines are a victim of their own success. They're so good at eliminating their respective illnesses that we don't have any firsthand experience with those illnesses so we don't know how bad they can be. If someone with measles coughs in an elevator, 90% of people that go in that elevator (without it being disinfected) will catch measles if they're not vaccinated.
Can you show me any scholarly articles supporting your statement? Because I can show you countless that support mine. Don't get over *your* head, maybe?

Usually these types of lifestyles concern me, especially when the parents give their children no rules or education, but they seem very educated about life in general, well spoken, and the point he made about kids getting into trouble like he did honestly makes a lot of sense. Their kids are getting educated and learning good work ethics while staying out of trouble, yet still having their own sense of freedom. Theres technically nothing wrong with that.
