Family Of 9 Live Off Grid To 'Reject Society' | MY EXTRAORDINARY FAMILY

  • AN OFF-GRID family say the reason for moving away from city life was to remove themselves from the “negative things of the world” - such as the public school system and western medicine. Kip Smyth grew up in Thousand Oaks, CA, as a 'city boy'. He worked as a manager at a retail store and hated the consumer culture that came with it. So Kip and his wife Carrie researched the best place to relocate their family to a sustainable way of life. They landed on the Ozarks, and seven years ago bought the land for their dream to become a reality. The family-of-nine now live in a 500sq. ft. tiny home where they keep dairy cows, chickens and turkeys. Kip told Truly: “I'm pulling my children out of the negative things of the world. If you look at what's happening in America right now, the kind of craziness, it's not getting a better society.”

    Honestly worrying about children being “socialized” when homeschooled is just an excuse to hate on something people have been brainwashed to believe is wrong and bad because it goes against the status quo. One if my bestfriends from ages 12 to 18 was homeschooled until she was 16. She went to church and had 3 sisters. She's one of the nicest and most social people I know. She's smart as well. The only thing is is that she dated a 20+ year old at 14 and he was allowed at their house... she also married a 40 year old at 20.... and it turns out she's dyslexic and her parents didn't know. I wrote a paper on dyslexia because I have it, and she said that describes her perfectly. I said she must have dyslexia then, and she got defensive and denied it:/ I'm sure there's a lot of good examples of homeschooled people, this is just my experience with them.
      And then there's me. Went to school from age 3-22, I had major social anxiety up until a year ago. It took getting on meds to be able to interact with coworkers like a semi normal person. I use to not even talk in work environments. 🤦‍♀️ I also have only had online friends since graduating public high school. There's also a ton of bad examples of public school kids.

The biggest disagreement I have, is if you completely cut yourself off from society, then how are you going to be the light of Christ in a dark and dying world? Christ calls us to be lights that cannot be hid. The gospel doesn't get spread when Christians hide themselves away. Christianity isn't a "my way of life" type of thing. It's the truth and life for all men and women and how selfish are we if we try and keep the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ for ourselves?

      "Off-the-grid or off-grid is a characteristic of buildings and a lifestyle designed in an independent manner without reliance on one or more public utilities. The term "off-the-grid" traditionally refers to not being connected to the electrical grid, but can also include other utilities like water, gas, and sewer systems, and can scale from residential homes to small communities. Off-the-grid living allows for buildings and people to be self-sufficient, which is advantageous in isolated locations where normal utilities cannot reach and is attractive to those who want to reduce environmental impact and cost of living. Generally, an off-grid building must be able to supply energy and potable water for itself, as well as manage food, waste and wastewater."

      Absolutely! It’s just…we act like the right homeschool/private setup is 100% without downsides. And that’s true…for the children in that specific family. I know I’m probably speaking to an ill matched audience here. Still. People don’t seem to realize that families w the resources, knowledge, and passion to private/home school are the EXACT ones we, as a society, desperately need as stakeholders in public schools! It just comes down to prioritizing one’s kids over all others. Yeah, we do that as an individualistic society. But for people who most reject society (and rightfully)? It’s so sad to ultimately choose “me and mine” as the massive priority over far more children. If this lifestyle is so beautiful, which it probably is, don’t you want a piece of it for other kids?

Precisely because living this way “as a choice” in places where economy consumes while people are active part of it , is not new, it makes it even greater (to my eyes) I appreciate progress, evolution and the wonders of this technological era we are living in, however I question how the people of tomorrow will be able to solve real life problems if not exposed to them in the early stages of their existence. These children are growing up in total communion with nature rather than in concrete and asphalt, regardless of what they will “chose” to do when they grow up (ex: the big brother is pursuing a career in technology, kudos to him since he will most likely combine his early life experience to his future development as a “new era technology related professional) My real point is, we always tend to go back to the beginning of our early experience, then no matter if they chose to stay in the rural life or not, whatever they pursue, they will most likely think and act pro nature, then I feel the future of the world is better hands. (I want to be very clear that my comment is not intended to judge/criticize any parents for how they are raising their children any differently that this couple in the video, simply sharing my personal viewpoint on how this type of parenting may impact in a positive way in the next generations)

      Exactly. You can't hide your kids away from the world. They need to know how the world works and how to think for themselves. These parents would blow a gasket if one of the kids decided they disagreed with their parents and wanted to live in modern society. In families like this one, the kids are always required to accept the viewpoint of the parents without question and to never ever think for themselves. Inevitably, one or more of these kids will rebel and all hell will break loose. The parents will throw them out so they can't influence the other kids. These parents have no idea what's coming as their kids grow up and realize mom and dad are wackos. It has happened so many times with families like this. The parents believe they will always have control of the children, but they won't. And as soon as they lose their grip, this house of cards is going to collapse in on them.

    I was homeschooled as a child and I'm so glad that I was. I was able to pursue what I was most passionate about and learn about the things I found interesting. I grew up with a love of documentaries and all I watched PBS every night until I was in my teens. It's really disheartening to see people assume that those who are homeschooled aren't as smart as the ones who attended public school, because honestly I've had my time in public school and didn't learn nearly as much. And nothing was retained because it was all to be memorized for a test and that was it. On the social aspect of homeschooling, I think if you're going to homeschool your children that getting them involved in other social activities is important. I was in girl scouts, a swimming group, a church youth group and in a group of other homeschooled kids that did activities every week. I also grew up on a farm and it was a wonderful and valuable experience.
    But that's the pros. The cons of this type of living is the anti-vaxing... which, sure, if you're not in public often you won't have as much to worry about, but those kids are going to grow up and become adults and will probably not want to live this same lifestyle. What about the risk of complications in adulthood from not having been vaccinated as a child?
    Also, teaching your children to be fearful of the world and distrusting of everyone is not a good thing... when they grow up and have to go out into the real world as adults, they may have a lot of trouble coping because of these fears that were instilled in them.
    So there are a lot of pros and cons here...

    • @bethw7686
      @bethw7686 3 роки тому +15

      The Buddy system is in no way handing your little ones off to the older ones to be raised. It's a way of building relationships and, yes, taking a little weight off mom's shoulders. Mom can go nurse the baby and put her down for a nap while the three biggest kids read, do puzzles, etc, with the littles. When mom needs to work one on one with a child about a more difficult school concept, any easy little questions or problems the younger children are having can be resolved by the other children. That isn't saying mom isn't involved in everything for all the kids; just that she has an extra set of hands in the form of the bigger kids.
      I only have two children, and even at that I have been known to use the buddy system. While I'm packing lunches, my older daughter might be helping my younger tie her shoes. When the two of them empty the dishwasher, my older puts everything away in the upper cabinets and my younger gets the lowers. It's called teamwork, and it is part of being in a family. It isn't farming your little kids out to their older siblings. It's life.

    • @danielleannmarie_

    I at least hope that once their children are old enough to vocalize their wishes, they would allow them to be immunized. I suppose that once they’re old enough, they’re more already indoctrinated. But saying “I would let them, but my heart would be hurt” is emotionally manipulative. No child wants to displease their parents.

    Usually these types of lifestyles concern me, especially when the parents give their children no rules or education, but they seem very educated about life in general, well spoken, and the point he made about kids getting into trouble like he did honestly makes a lot of sense. Their kids are getting educated and learning good work ethics while staying out of trouble, yet still having their own sense of freedom. Theres technically nothing wrong with that.
