Thanks ChiroGen for this post and clarifying the difference(s) between Hot vs Cold Compress Application. What about the use of hot water bottle (I use that), would this be a variation as a dry heat application instead of heat pack? If so, would hot water bottle and damp towel suffice as a replacement for heat pack to achieve the required in depth penetration to the lower back (big dimple area as per your description)? Hot water bottle seems to cover a large area surface (obviously depending on size).

Hi there, hot water bottles and heat packs would both be considered dry heat applications but can be adapted with a damp towel around them to make them wet heat. Otherwise, hot baths and showers and hot tubs and saunas would be more wet heat. The dimples in the lower back are getting into the more bony areas of the lower back as they are very closely related the the si joints. I would generally try an keep heat packs on the more fleshy, muscular parts of the back either side of the spine. Hope that makes sense and helps 😀
