    A thin towel is bad wrap for an ice pack. It will quickly condense moisture which will freeze, negating the protection. What I found that works better is a terry washcloth or face towel covered with a ziplock plastic bag. The combination keeps out moisture and the nap of the terry allows air to do the heat exchange. ut.
    The secondary benefit of initially using cooling is that it numbs the area.

    Hmm, I agree mainly on all but that pack being put under entire surface of lower back at around 6:00/01. I would always fold it so it covers mainly spine (bone part) as such and much less muscle area. After being folded it is approx my hand and half in width. And btw, when wrapping ice to ankle or so do not forget it there, I did once and had partially frozen skin and maybe even meat and later big and painful blister for 2 and more weeks if I remember correctly. :-) It was worse then heat burn.

      True that ice helps reduce the pain due to helping numb the nerves and of course reduce swelling. However newer info says that heat is better (after swelling)for healing since it increases blood flow to the damaged tissue .

    I make cold packs from ice cubes crushed down, put into 2 or even 3 freezer bags. It orurrcts the skin, is completely malleable to the shape of the area where the injury is. Put it back in the freezer on that shape. When you need it again, it's rock hard but easily broken up.

    Using heat pack against your back on the recliner will damage the foam on the recliner... same for your bed. I have long term back pain, and used to use heat on the muscles, and melted a few mattresses. Not melted, but over time, that part of the bed becomes mushy.

    I have early degeneration of facet joints at L4/L5. The mri says it is mild and due to a tiny synovial cyst which is far from the nerve. I have quite frequent flare ups and they are usually triggered when I overdue at the gym. I also have trochanteric hip bursitis. Atm im exploring exercise modifications with a physio to work around my condition which I would classify as chronic since it creeps up every 4-5 months and takes a few months for the pain to go away. For prevention of future flare ups should I use ice or heat on lower back and hip ? Thanks guys

    Hi guys 😊 i use 2 or 3 hot water bottles on my sciatica lumbar pain and my groin and my outter thigh leg. Wraped in a towel. I spread my quilt on my bed and i became crippled with pain in my back and groin i couldnt walk. 7 heated water bottles later for 4 days. Im at last able to stand up straight and walk to the toilet and go up the stairs. I went so stiff and the pain was painful. But now im able to move. Hot water bottles is better.

  • @Amy_Stanmore
    @Amy_Stanmore 3 роки тому

    I'm in winter now with sciatica and I can't do ice it's too freezing so I didn't do anything, 4 days later either have a warm shower in the evening or use a hot water bottle. I feel more comfy and soothed with a hwb. started walking today and it was feeling better so tomorrow I'll walk morning and afternoon and do the stretching before I have breakfast and before bed. For cold I use a clean tea towel. I'll try the compression strap next time.

    What do you think of an ice water bath to bring down overall body inflammation/pain or soaking an effected area in ice water. Seems like the cold would penetrate better that way. Might be really uncomfortable, but if you only stay in the water for a short time, it would be safe. I'm just inspired by the idea of winter bathing where folks of all ages take a quick dip in icy sea water each day. Some people swear by the health benefits. What are your thoughts?

    OK, when you sprain a joint it swells up. That seems like it's the body's way of immobilizing the joint. Yet they say to put cold on it to take away the swelling. Seems like you're fighting against what the body wants to do. It seems like taking the swelling away would encourage you to use the joint again, which your body is trying to stop you from doing. Why use cold?

I put a bed tray on my desk and it was the perfect height. Keep all your paints around you so you don’t have to reach very much. I think a thick rubber mat would help too, for standing on.

    Why some docs say... that we shouldn't ice an acute injury.., coz icing stops the blood flow to the area n therefore the healing.
    What are ur thoughts on it??

    • @krisbarnes9083
      @krisbarnes9083 6 років тому +3

      Sareeka Katkuri the only way to completely stop the blood flow to an area is a tourniquet, which is NEVER indicated for soft tissue injuries. The ice will reduce the swelling, and therefore the pain. That's why any time you have an acute injury (sudden and quickly developing into possible further complications), you ALWAYS use cold first, then heat to relax the muscles. Any contrary opinion is NOT teaching to International Red Cross standards.

      I am also interested in the answer, especially how it compares with the IR heating pad mentioned in this video.

    Liked Video but you did not say how long you should keep ice on a lower back for sciatica pain. Ice feels good but I know I can not keep it long for a long time. (HOW LONG) ?

    Are you supposed to lie down when applying heat? I have one of those heating belts that you can stand/sit or walk around in. I was told by my massage therapist that heat is good for bulging & herniated disk, but when I apply heat it hurts MORE after 10 minutes not less.

    Would like to see a video about your thoughts on becoming PT today. I've been thinking about it but am not sure the loans of DPT school outweigh the modest salary that most PTs make starting their careers. Thanks guys!

      Lou Anthony that depends on the setting. If you go outpatient then yes. But SNF, Acute, home care you'll probably start at 80k and in home care some places 90k+. Alot of DPT students come out with 100k-200k in debt. If you really wanted to pay it off asap you can look into working weekends PRN and you can make an extra 20k-30k a year. It's just a lot of work

      Lou Anthony, if you can see yourself doing this job, then nothing should stop you. The other reply about adding extra hours to pay off debt is smart. At the pet place I go to, there are college students there working as techs.
