Fantastic! Although I will say that a competitive GSC list is one of the few that plays really well into Eldar, so you guys should have plenty of opportunity to scale things up if you decide you want to at some point

A really great video. I may have to casually drop the link into our clubs 40K channel as there are a few player there that should take a long hard look at themselves. I remember my 3rd ever game of 40K and first in 8th when I asked for an intro game and my opponent turned up with the full Guilliman, hellblaster blob that was so popular at one point in that edition. Suffice to say he wrecked me. Probably the worst bit was, I’m that 2-3 games a year casual player but do watch battle reps etc so knew what I was walking into when I saw his deployment. He was and is a nice guy but I don’t think is able to get out of tournament mode and it put me off playing 40K for a good year or two. That game, however, really made me think about how I played when teaching new or returning players warhammer fantasy, which is my main jam. Using it as an opportunity to take the fun stuff in weaker armies. It just makes the game more enjoyable for both sides.
Oh, I totally sympathize. I had pretty much the same experience when I returned to the hobby at the beginning of 8th after MANY years off. I got tabled by Thousand Sons on turn 3 and I don't think I destroyed more than a dozen models. This kind of thing is more disheartening in 40k than a standard board game because of the sheer investment of money and creative and energy that goes into our first fully painted and complete army
Thanks Brent! Reading all the constant complaining about how ott our stuff is and crushing my casual partners has got me real down lately. That and the lack of broad customization/the awful state of psykers and aspects is very demoralizing! This is a great way to thing about list construction that has helped me tremendously.
Certain aspects are great and a ton of fun to play still. Fire Dragons and swooping hawks have a lot of play, obviously warp spiders, scorpions make a good forward screen, and banshees can still charge over 24" out of a vehicle. Our aspects aren't the powerhouse of last edition, but their points values reflect that so it evens out. You could definitely build a aspect centric list with a backbone of falcons and be competitive with it assuming you get the practice necessary to finesse it through games
i love that you focus on 500 game points for teaching new players to 40K. Competitive & casual are in the same continium so being able to switch out quickly makes more fun. For this reason i like adding the narrative to the game even if its playing with a disadvantage of current 'meta'
I (new player) played a game against chaos demons (seasoned player) and got owned pretty hard. It was still fun, but he had a whole other squad of bloodletters that I barely even fought with. I watched my brother play against GSC combat patrol and I have no idea how I'd cope against that many units. No phantasm :(
I enjoyed this video and found it valuable. I actually don't play 40k but these philosophies are great for any miniature game. I play Malifaux and a Song of Ice and Fire. I plan on using the advice in this video. Thank you for making this video.
I love this. Also kinda scary as you spoke about the guys play once or twice a year… that’s me. And I’m sure my Mymera list would need some tweaking because I have 3 units or wraith guard, 2 lords a seer and wraith knight. There was also a Scorpion >_> still only pulled it out of the display case to teach a necron player that they needed to do more than turtle a couple editions ago.
Super timely. Need to build a list to play my wife and daughters. Awesome. I am mostly an Iyanden player, so toning down my list will be a challenge to say the least.
Thank's for the upload! I love competitive gaming but I also collect a oop models Eldar list, I love old models. It's very peaceful for me to paint as it is strictly a hobby army, not for competitive gaming so no stress of owning whats good etc. It is pretty much all infantry with a some Walkers and a Falcon nothing of the hot stuff. I did try it a couple of times in 10th against my most competitive gaming friend. He played Abaddon, Oblits, Terminators, Possessed and he is good. It was pretty even but I lost both games it was a good time though, I have to say that I never mained Eldar so I most certainly did not do them justice even if the list was a fluff fest. Cheers!
Nice- I really like how 40k has room for such a vast number of ways to enjoy the hobby. If you do want to beat that friend of yours, consider picking up a Wraithknight :)
Likes for the likes god, COMMENTS FOR THE COMMENTS GOD!! good video focus as Always. My main gaming mate is Tau. The potential of eldar vs Tau is a war crime it done competitively but is a good chance for thematic lists that really are fun
Ive been running shroud runners, shining spears, falcon with Maugan+ reapers, wraithlord. So bit more chill units, my opponents where pretty happy with the games. I still have fun with games, but doesnt get super one sided
Really great points; as someone who plays with a core group of "casually competitive" friends it is sobering to have a reminder/clarifier of what casual play is, fundamentally.
OH idea for Eldar 500 point list: Farseer skyrunner, Warlock Skyrunner X2, 3 units of 3 Skyrunners and one Vyper. 500 points on the dot. leave everything as the default wargear. and this list can be expand in to the 1k list i talked about in the other comment. i love see how this list at 500 points would play
Okay, so I totally stole my color scheme from StrikingScorpion82 on UA-cam. If you Google, "StrikingScorpion82 Iybraesil" you should get his excellent how-to video
I just took everything with an insecty name and painted the armour as chitin.Added some Path of the Outcast types to flesh it out and give variety and lo, my webway-based, mostly destroyed Craftworld was complete! Add a Skathach remodeled to look like a giant Warp Spider and Wraithlord to be all Striking Scorpioney (war walker feet make great mandiblaster mounts!) and off I go! Does it roflstomp everything it faces? No! Does it hold its own at 1/1,.5/2/2.5k points and give me unit variability from my collection within those? Yes! This "meta" people talk about changes every 2 seconds, is mostly false assumptions and has no bearing on the fun or purpose of 40k. Doing as I do was NORMAL for the hobby when I started in the 90''s, and it still is!
I think I'm going to buy myself a 1k eldar army for my birthday, any suggestions for a list with jetbikes while being well-rounded for casual play that avoids resin kits?
Do you mean Windriders specifically? Or any bikes? Arguably the best bike units at the moment are Harlequin Skyweavers followed by Shroud Runners. None of the bike units are A-listers at the moment, but none are garbage either. If you want more in-depth advice, feel free to use the contact info on my website to send me an email. Happy birthday!
I play exclusively casual. My most regular opponent (90% of the time) is a former GT winner back in 3/4th ed so we can have very competive games, I lose most of the time. The losing doesn't bother me so much as i want and most people want to feel like they did something on the board even it at the end of the game they lost of points. If both armies are very reduced in size by the end of the game it was generally a good game. If my regular opponent is prepping for a tournament ( he does do this much anymore) I will try to bring as competitive a list as i can to help him test what he is using.
Hi. I'm a fresh Eldar player (got a single game in with them in 9th, got absolutely annihilated by Iron Hands), and I want to play Eldar because I like psyker armies. I already have solid Grey Knights and Thousand Sons armies, but I want to run an Eldar list soon, preferably with lots of psykers. It doesn't need to be top-tier, I just don't want it to suck. I'd like to play with lots of farseers and warlocks. I even have a wraithseer. Is there a way to make a farseer/warlock-centric list and make it good? Thanks in advance.
I can confirm that wraithlords are more intense than you'd expect in a casual setting, although I really struggle to understand people who don't bring any anti-vehicle.
Meltagun fun! Krak grenade launcher fun! Super krak rocket fun! Lascannon fun! Not really sure what the problem is unless their running like all flamers or something.
Not everyone has unlimited options and the edition is new. I have armies that relied on meltaguns for anit-tank and haven't gotten updated for 10th yet. Some poor people play Grey Knights and can only dream of anti-tank options.
From my perspective as a new player. I kinda want to play against named characters, I think people call it Hero-Hammer. As a casual myself that is the list I am making, I want to collect all the Phoenix Lords and their aspect warriors, then stick them on the table and just have fun. Also collecting Harlequin's so got myself a death jester a Shadowseer and a Solitaire, all interesting characters, and not a tournament list by any means. So if I got hit with a tournament list i'd unlikely feel over joyed about it. But if someone put a list just full of cool characters (That list with Old One-eye actually sounds kinda fun as I know the story behind that character) i'd still have a good time. Swarm lists would be cool, almost become a minigame of how many can I take off the table, and live that character story etc. That's my perspective anyway.
Hello! I have been on and off playing Warhammer for the past year or so and am getting back in, i play casually and have ammassed an army of 2 guardian squads, wraith guard, wraith lord, war walker, farseer, and a visarch from my friend (basically start collecting and some infantry) Any guides to where i should go from here? I am considering to buy the combat patrol but im not sure if i should delve into new units, just looking for ideas Thanks!
That's awesome! Next, I would suggest a pair of Nightspinners and a couple of squads of swooping Hawks or warp spiders to help with secondaries. The Yncarne would also be a great add, so would the Avatar
My plan was to sim a good list cuz I like to be competitive in almost all the games I play, so I likely will only have units from my competitive list. Not sure if it’s gonna be Eldar yet.
yeah wile listening to this was building a 1k list thats just all jet bikes + 2 vypers and 1 Falcon VERY Saim-Hann and if you just leave all the wargear stock its very fun army just squshy enough
I was thinking about creating a *Eldar Wraith Army.* The comanding character would be a Spiritseer with extreme depression due to her being the last Living member of her enclave.
If I plan on playing at a local casual scene I bring a couple armies and ask what sort of a game they are looking for. I also build my lists more for scoring than killing so I can give someone a fun game even when beating the socks off of them by points.
I just started with warhammer and after a little bit of combat patroll, skirmish and playing around with digital versions of the game i bought a wraithknight and a pack of wrariguard to play with friends becuase i liked those in the dawn of war games .....now i feel bad to even bring them to match after this video but i dont have rhe funds or time to replace them fast :(
@@WBConcilio omg thanks for the quick reassurance, i was Planing for a themed Team where a Team of Windriders and Rangers lead Bye a farseer try to Scout a way to Bring Home a thought dead wraithknight and didnt know If that was usable ,then saw this Video and was worried it might be Not fun for the other Person
Casual 40k is what I play as I don't have time for competative play and tournaments. I don't have wraith knight or Fire Prisms. I take what models I have.
I played 3 wraith Lords and 3x5 blades against sisters recently. My lord killed a single flagellent (or how they are written) per round - not turn! I lost, getting annihilated by Rackets from outside LOS and morvan's kill squad. The game was a lot of fun, with some tight moments, but from turn3 onwards a clear push for victory from the sororitas.
Balancing in september that went well. My dudes got killed and are now two botyom tier armies, while the fixed eldar are the top army. If l bring my casual army the casual eldar lists wins turn 3 with a VP difference. Eldar have so powrful army rules that they can "decide stuff by decisions at the table" , other armies if they don't build their army the right way WILL lose. Trying to play as not gunboat lance spam , try to not use FW as custodes . There will be no stories , because you will not score, get killed and the game is done turn 1.
My old-school Epic Eldar army was ALL about hit fast and hard...it worked then, should work fine now. Wave Serpents to break lines, Harlequin and Scorpions to wipe them out. Of course back then the Epic WS rules had a launchable barrier...it was OP. lol F your ranged units, but also F your melee...I would just shove them out of the way and destroy. I would/did support with ranged units, but I could even wipe out Titans and Heavy Tanks with just my shock troops + Wave Serpent. Cut a flank, and encircle.
Great video. Unfortunately the guys I am learning with are ultra competitive. No casual games with most of them. Going to learn playing a "crusade" or whatever that is
My buddies and I typically play by rule of cool, we make nice balanced lists but always try to include our favorite unit regardless of its power level. I bring a squad of fire dragons in a falcon in pretty much every game. If my opponent has no chance of killing a single Falcon tank then they just built a garbage list.
The Wraithknight is still good, despite the nerf. If you give it two Wraithcannons and use fate dice to trigger devastating wounds it will vaporize any tank or monster. If you run the sword and shield, it is just a good midfield bully unit not viable for competitive play, but solid for a casual list
@@WBConcilio he doesn’t think he can but his melee is incredibly scary, to the point where I think a melee knight will get killed far quicker than is reasonable
I dont get why high winrate is bad. Isnt it possible that a larger number of competitive Eldar players are just better than others? How do you tell the difference between good play and poorly balanced armies?
Well, let me say this. Highly experienced competitive players that I had a roughly 50/50 win rate against before the tenth Ed codex, I now have a 100 percent win rate against. The Art of War guys have observed something similar, except when playing into GSC, Thousand Sons, or other Eldar. While it IS true that top tournament players gravitating towards an army with an edge can artificially inflate the win rate beyond the actual "edge," it seems like there is more than enough data to demonstrate that there is real imbalance in this case
@@WBConcilio ok, so it's a "if you know what you're doing it makes it virtually impossible to loose" case? That is bad. And would make it hard to find games really quick without finding a new store and friends every week. Edit: I play Eldar, I have a few other minis but I've never seriously considered even a full squad of troops for another army. I also suck at tactics. My particular autistic focuses aren't in the realm of combat planning. And I very much approach this game like any other tabletop games: it's a neat thing with friends that isn't more serious than a round of Munchkin. The constant tinkering from GW really feels like an excuse to drive sales that most players aren't willing to acknowledge. With the release of cheap 3d resin printers and solidly printed at home minis GW really needs to learn into cheap and easily approachable patterns we can buy for legit at home minis. Because GW has straight priced me out of the hobby over the last decade. And I'm sure a LOT of people who don't have the disposable income would become a minor revenue stream while so many people won't be bothered to make their own. It's ignorant and anti-user. But anyway, thanks for reading this far and for the explanation.
I'm 8 mins in and all I've got so far is 'some people like to win and are good at choosing rostas, others say they don't care if they win (but they really do) and aren't so good at it - the latter are getting battered by the former'. Hoping this gets deeper...
@@Morpheus0000 Hey Man, Sorry to hear you don't like my content. I suggest checking out Auspex Tactics; it's pretty much a no frills content dump, but nicely delivered. I check in there a couple times a month, and it's always solid

Sounds like I'm gonna get squished.
@@Morpheus0000 ohhhhh- okay. So this particular video is kind of the opposite of what you are looking for. I think no matter what, you will need to add some new models- I would start with an Autarch Wayleaper and an Avatar of Khaine- but you can get some mileage out of those Windriders if you treat them all as having Shuriken Cannons and proxy a Farseer Sky Runner; the War Walkers are good, but proxy double brightlances. I have a video on Windriders that might be helpful, but you might also check out this one one: ua-cam.com/video/76fe2DPw-kk/v-deo.htmlsi=3YfGJcbKAxS5m9JY
@@Morpheus0000It definitely is. If anything, it's a little bit overpowered in small games- with a nearby farseer. You can throw OverWatch on it and also use fate dice to automatically hit an OverWatch which will also trigger sustained hits
if some peoples want to play with a competitive army they should do like my friend do when we play magic together, he give me a competitive decks, don't stop me to loose, but generally i last longer than when i use my own decks (5 turns was the chorstest game we had)
I mean… I feel like you answered this in the first 2 minutes. Are you not running a lot of vehicles? Fire prisms? Wraithknights? Mostly guardians and aspect warriors? Then not competitive. Which is so disappointing for this game. GW needs to require 2 battle line and adjust points.
So much of this was right up my alley. I *want* to take hordes of Guardians and Warlocks in a Seer Council with Eldrad, but the meta says, "No, you fool!" Well, the meta can get lost. I *will* play a mad Ulthwé list, and I will have a fine time of it!

Really glad to hear you found it useful
Great video - I love narrative play as it frees you up to explore Lore based lists
Definitely love the new combat patrol mode. Do you think you could possibly do a video on how to play Eldar in combat patrol?
Oh, I definitely should.
Oh, I love the ASOIAF mini game!! Thank you so much listening, even though you don't play 40k!
I've needed this video, thank you!
Great advice- particularly for how to handle playing in a teaching game!
Thank you!
Those are some very solid units for 10th!!
Super timely. Need to build a list to play my wife and daughters. Awesome. I am mostly an Iyanden player, so toning down my list will be a challenge to say the least.
That's awesome
@@WBConcilio Not old enough model for that specific collection. I have other competitive armies though so I can beat him when I really try.
Sounds like a great list for casual games
Great video, thanks for the upload!
Really good video, thank you!
Really great points; as someone who plays with a core group of "casually competitive" friends it is sobering to have a reminder/clarifier of what casual play is, fundamentally.
It's just so helpful if everyone is on the same page
Great topic. Thx for covering this.
That sounds really fun and DEFINITELY casual
This sounds exactly like the lists I've been running for years. Seen highs and lows but it always serves me well
Would you ever do a painting video on the beautiful blue colour scheme or have a list of the paints used??
Okay, so I totally stole my color scheme from StrikingScorpion82 on UA-cam. If you Google, "StrikingScorpion82 Iybraesil" you should get his excellent how-to video
@@WBConcilio from 9 years ago ????!
@@haz3r229 yup
Ty ty, great video, love your channel.
Thank you!!!
Thanks for the video!
Any gameplay stream or something like that?
There are so many high production quality streaming games, I worry that anything I did would look amateurish is video and post production quality
Great video 🔥
I play exclusively casual. My most regular opponent (90% of the time) is a former GT winner back in 3/4th ed so we can have very competive games, I lose most of the time. The losing doesn't bother me so much as i want and most people want to feel like they did something on the board even it at the end of the game they lost of points. If both armies are very reduced in size by the end of the game it was generally a good game. If my regular opponent is prepping for a tournament ( he does do this much anymore) I will try to bring as competitive a list as i can to help him test what he is using.
You sound like the ideal club player
"Your opponent in a casual game, win or lose, probably will have a good time if they kill most of your models". So true!
What about playing a smaller game than 2000 points if one player only has 2000 points of overpowered stuff? Like a 1500 point or 1000 point game?
again great stuff
ty for the video
Hello! I have been on and off playing Warhammer for the past year or so and am getting back in, i play casually and have ammassed an army of 2 guardian squads, wraith guard, wraith lord, war walker, farseer, and a visarch from my friend (basically start collecting and some infantry)
Any guides to where i should go from here? I am considering to buy the combat patrol but im not sure if i should delve into new units, just looking for ideas
Thanks!
That's awesome!
Next, I would suggest a pair of Nightspinners and a couple of squads of swooping Hawks or warp spiders to help with secondaries. The Yncarne would also be a great add, so would the Avatar
Ahhhh now you're speaking my language!
Very useful video!
Nice Video!!
My plan was to sim a good list cuz I like to be competitive in almost all the games I play, so I likely will only have units from my competitive list. Not sure if it’s gonna be Eldar yet.
Saim-Hann jetbikes now. Saim-Hann jetbikes forever.
:D
Awesome video, what blue did you use for your eldar? They look amazing!
Thank you! It's Sotek Green with a blue wash and Lothern Blue highlights
yeah wile listening to this was building a 1k list thats just all jet bikes + 2 vypers and 1 Falcon VERY Saim-Hann and if you just leave all the wargear stock its very fun army just squshy enough
I was thinking about creating a *Eldar Wraith Army.*
The comanding character would be a Spiritseer with extreme depression due to her being the last Living member of her enclave.
If I plan on playing at a local casual scene I bring a couple armies and ask what sort of a game they are looking for. I also build my lists more for scoring than killing so I can give someone a fun game even when beating the socks off of them by points.
This is probably the ideal approach
I just started with warhammer and after a little bit of combat patroll, skirmish and playing around with digital versions of the game i bought a wraithknight and a pack of wrariguard to play with friends becuase i liked those in the dawn of war games .....now i feel bad to even bring them to match after this video but i dont have rhe funds or time to replace them fast :(
It's TOTALLY fine
There were big nerfs since I made that
@@WBConcilio omg thanks for the quick reassurance, i was Planing for a themed Team where a Team of Windriders and Rangers lead Bye a farseer try to Scout a way to Bring Home a thought dead wraithknight and didnt know If that was usable ,then saw this Video and was worried it might be Not fun for the other Person
Of course back then the Epic WS rules had a launchable barrier...it was OP. lol
F your ranged units, but also F your melee...I would just shove them out of the way and destroy. I would/did support with ranged units, but I could even wipe out Titans and Heavy Tanks with just my shock troops + Wave Serpent. Cut a flank, and encircle.
@@MrAcuta73 epic was so awesome
Please bring back the combat patrol vid, I was still watching lol
Sorry- I need to rerecord; hope to have it up this week
Great video. Unfortunately the guys I am learning with are ultra competitive. No casual games with most of them. Going to learn playing a "crusade" or whatever that is
@@craigbrunotte that can be a tough way to learn- but there are lots of videos on the channel about more competitive play that might help
My buddies and I typically play by rule of cool, we make nice balanced lists but always try to include our favorite unit regardless of its power level. I bring a squad of fire dragons in a falcon in pretty much every game. If my opponent has no chance of killing a single Falcon tank then they just built a garbage list.
To add on for playing new gamers, try to keep unites simple. One of each aspect unit is fun but overwhelming for beginners.
I’m prepping a list for a new friend. However I think we both want to see what a wraith knight does
The Wraithknight is still good, despite the nerf. If you give it two Wraithcannons and use fate dice to trigger devastating wounds it will vaporize any tank or monster.
If you run the sword and shield, it is just a good midfield bully unit not viable for competitive play, but solid for a casual list
@@WBConcilio amazing. That’s exactly what I want…… what if I run 2 of them?
@@Yutopiso just make sure one has a sword and your friend has the firepower to kill a knight
@@WBConcilio he doesn’t think he can but his melee is incredibly scary, to the point where I think a melee knight will get killed far quicker than is reasonable
@@Yutopiso give it a try. You can always tone it down for game twi
Aircraft are a good fluffy unit to take. They're fun to use and not powerful
I play ulthwe I just play a lot of warlocks and guardians and eldrad and some wraith lords I don’t care about winning it’s the fluff I love
I'm 8 mins in and all I've got so far is 'some people like to win and are good at choosing rostas, others say they don't care if they win (but they really do) and aren't so good at it - the latter are getting battered by the former'. Hoping this gets deeper...
@@Morpheus0000 Hey Man,
Sorry to hear you don't like my content. I suggest checking out Auspex Tactics; it's pretty much a no frills content dump, but nicely delivered. I check in there a couple times a month, and it's always solid
@@WBConcilio sorry dude, I didn't mean I didn't enjoy it, I watched it all the way through and did find it informative... I think I was just looking for more casual gamers advice on how to make a decent army that's not gonna get squished from the first turn. I'm just coming back to wh40k after a looo....oong gap and I just want to know how to make my aeldari army viable on the models I have (lots of guardians, an old war walker, farseer, autarch, windriders and rangers).
@@WBConcilio brill, thanks. Is the AoK worth the points for a smallish army?
@@Morpheus0000It definitely is. If anything, it's a little bit overpowered in small games- with a nearby farseer. You can throw OverWatch on it and also use fate dice to automatically hit an OverWatch which will also trigger sustained hits
if some peoples want to play with a competitive army they should do like my friend do when we play magic together, he give me a competitive decks, don't stop me to loose, but generally i last longer than when i use my own decks (5 turns was the chorstest game we had)

To be fair this isn't just about playing Eldar. These philosophies carry over into most factions when it comes to casual play.
Leave; Spiders, Prisms,Yncarn, Warwalkers, Scouts, D-cannos and anything indirect and you will probably maybe be fine.
Hello. Video watched
Dont bring Knight, Spider and FirePrism. Simple.
Never understood meta gamers in 40k. The game is fun to play, but it’s too expensive to buy models purely to win.
