  • One look at Luna’s new Eclipse e-bike, and you know there is something special here. Full review: electrek.co/20...
It is part BMX, part fat tire folder and part full-suspension e-bike. Add to that solid components all around like a 1kW Bafang geared rear hub motor, aluminum alloy frame, Gates CDX belt drive and big 672Wh removable battery and we’re looking at an incredible package that Luna is somehow selling for under $1400.
That price however means some costs had to be cut. Some components are great but not are all amazing - notably mechanical brakes and mid-grade suspension. No gearing makes 20mph+ pedaling difficult and top assist speed of just 25mph.
Still though, with full suspension, gates belt drive, great wheels and 1kW of power and 672WH of battery, this is an amazing package and more importantly the Luna Eclipse is so much fun to ride and own.

I’ve had mine now for a couple weeks, I love the aesthetics of this bike. I wish it went abit faster. Nevertheless still fun to ride, The torque and acceleration of this bike is always fun, just wish it had a faster top speed is all. When riding I love the fat tire feel and they look cool. The other issue I have which is nobody’s fault but I’m short at 5’5” I cannot flat foot on this thing and maybe that’s just a personal gripe but I just don’t feel 100% comfortable on it that being the case. Short people problems lol but I deal with it. The Seat that comes with it is absolute garbage sitting on a jagged rock would be more comfortable I feel this is just one area that Luna saved a few bucks not a big deal I put a comfortable seat on it right away from Amazon. The shocks front and back can be adjusted. This bike does offer a smooth ride, the brakes get the job done but I do wish they were a bit more aggressive. I’m 150 pounds and with nothing but throttle I got 27 miles for range. The battery takes about seven hours to fully charge, if fully depleted. It’s a solid Ebike very sturdy, personally I could care less about the folding aspect of it although I do like that the battery fits within the frame which really keeps the bike clean looking. If you are looking for a quick fold and go put anywhere Ebike there’s probably better options out there for you, but any SUV truck definitely won’t be a problem. Overall good bike.

it could also be a good base for an affordable 30+mph full suspension moped if you upgrade the motor to bafang 1000/1500W with an upgraded controller that could take you all the way up to 3000W. the rip racer has a stronger motor stock but no suspension so if your goal is to go 30+mph comfortably, full suspension is probably a better base. you can always upgrade the shock and/or fork later.
the problem then the weak link becomes the battery and there's little you can do except maybe carry a spare one, but I don't even know what kind of amps it could put out safely

then you would want much longer gearing and internally geared hub if they keep the belt. would probably double the price though but would greatly the pedalling assist at higher speeds and make better use of the 1kW motor
in the current configuration 1kW and 25mph is more a gimmick that they thought was worth the cost because they just beefed up th controller but it looks more a cheap way to check class 3 boxes on a bike that really should have been class 2. although I like cruising at higher speeds on a class 3 bike, it feels like I would rather use it like a class 1/2 and use 25mph on throttle only downhill to preserve range and get some workout otherwise

@@Paul__108__ it's light but 250/350W 32/45Nm, not a mid drive, not fat tires and no suspension. I'd guess limited to 20mph or maybe less. it has option for torque sensor so probably a good bike to pedal (for a small wheel bike) if you choose the version with chain and 9 speeds

@@Paul__108__ ok. lightweight carbon ebike makes sense if you are carrying your bike up or down stairs or loading/unloading it from your car on a daily basis, and you don't need long range/high speed. otherwise it just makes more sense to have an aluminum frame and bigger battery/motor. especially for a high speed 30mph ebike with 700+Wh, 1000W, fat tires, suspension, the frame is only a small amount compared to the whole weight.
Also with full suspension, having lighter unsprung wheight( wheels)/heavier sprung weight means the suspension works better.
overall your money is better spent having bigger battery/motor, maybe a torque sensor, or simply higher quality components, than a carbon frame.
if you are buying/building a high end eMTB or e road bike though, carbon can make sense because weight matters and the bike is going to cost 5-10k anyway so you might as well spend the additional cost for carbon. for a commuter, not so much

Looks pretty tempting. With a fat tire I really hope they're going to offer some fenders and even a possibility of front and/or rear rack. I was also just thinking that it might be a great idea for them to release a lite version. Simar to the xp Lite. Meaning skinnier wheels. I feel like skinnier BMX style wheels would really make this the perfect folder upper. So it would actually fold down small, and would be even lighter and that much more like a real bicycle (for pedaling etc) I can only imagine the kind of attention that might warrant. And then there might not be the need for fenders and a rack. For some reason I really need fenders at the very least when I'm messing with fat tire bikes. Nevermind a rear or front rack. Because they seem like they're intended for more utilitarian purposes

Can the battery be charged on the bike?
    Size/wattage of charger?
    Battery weight?
    How does it look folded?
    Folded dimensions?
Full twist-grips are dangerous, and not legal in some parts of the world. I would hope that both brake levers activate a motor kill switch (required in Europe), but from what I've seen, I'm not going to presume that they do.
It wasn't mentioned that the charger is only 2A, meaning recharge times of up to 7hrs.
Also not mentioned was the front shocks being spring, not air.

  • @geemy9675
    @geemy9675 2 роки тому +1

I wished they offered different (longer) gearing since the bike has pretty high torque (80Nm) and according to the reviews you can only pedal comfortably up to 15-16mph although top speed is 25mph. it is unclear if 25mph can be reached on throttle alone which would make it non class 2 or class 3. I reckon you need ghost pedaling to reach 25 or pedal crazy fast. hopefully Luna would leave an easy way to enable 25mph on throttle (seems like 4.39m of development means 25mph = 152rpm) I looked at gates sprockets and 20T in the back is almost the smallest (19T) I guess smaller sprocket wouldn't work well and generate too much loss or wear on the belt? so if you want to change just the sprockets the biggest change you can. maybe do is 57x19T which wouldnt be a game changer and still expensive. IDK it would probably make sense that they offer a version with chain and 7 speed which would be cheaper to manufacture and give a wider range of comfortable pedal assist speeds..

@@logitech12345678910 thanks, That's good to know and consistent with this review and also the purpose of the bike since you couldn't do anything but ghost pedalling anyway. but it also makes it not road or trail legal in the us or Europe
I don't know about the 1000W either since bafang rates it 500W nominal (nominal and peak is a bit of a grey area) but maybe it's the reason why they didn't bother to make it class 2/3

How does the throttle feel? As a former gas moped/scooter/motorcycle rider, I have always been very unimpressed by the throttle response of the few electric bikes/scooters I've ridden so far.
my wife's ride1up 700 throttle response is as bad as the cadence pedal assist. close to zero throttle control and a 2s delay whether you're twisting the throttle or lifting it. recently tried ride sharing on a 30mph limited revel scooter.there was a good second lag which make low speed balance and maneuvers really bad and probably makes it much harder to ride for a beginner.
from what I remember using gogoro based ride sharing in Europe, throttle response was better and much peppier. like a very strong 125cc that would just hit a wall at 45km/h
but nothing like my fiat 500e where how much you press the pedal is exactly and instantly how strong you are pushed back into the seat...
this set my expectations high and for me electric mobility should have way better throttle control than gas, not way worse!
I don't really understand how hard it would be for an ebike or emoped controller to offer linear and instant throttle control.
so far how bad cadence sensor or throttles are on hub motor ebikes has really kept me from buying an ebike and after being very unimpressed by the ride1up 700, I don't feel like buying online brands without a test ride (no I don't live in CA or NY so basically no easy way to test ride)

I've been riding this bike for about a month ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxwC0IIeIomGQVeBWg-kKJaToZkLEFIA2W and a half now and I think it's fantastic. It helps me get to work on time every day since I'm able to fit it inside of public transportation rush hour. The price is great too, people are always shocked when they ask me how much I paid for the fold up and I tell them "200". It's easy to fold and installation when it ships is insanely easy. All you have to install when the bike arrives is one foot pedal, everything else is done for you. I do recommend you carry some sort of wrench to tighten any loose screws on the handle bar and seat whenever they get a little bit loose. Other than that I think it's a fantastic bike. Easily fits in the home, can fit inside a car trunk and can even fit in subway rush hour.
