This is not a criticism, just an observation because we all do it. I found it interesting and a little validating that you were rationalizing and justifying items in your clothing sort but I don't know if you would have let, say Eunice, get away with the same logic.
I get what you're saying and I think it's a good thing to explain. I'm going to pin this comment to the top because I think it can be insightful to share.😊
There are a few differences and I will try to remember to point these things out more clearly in other videos when applicable. I think I can explain it best with bullet points...
1. I'd say the main difference is that we're in very different stages of our Space Maker journey. She's just starting. My Mom was just starting. I'm not.
2. While this closet at the moment was stressing me out (having leftover winter, spring and summer clothes), the problem was not the amount of shtuff itself but more so the restricted space. IF it were a long-term home, then I'd cut back so that it would fit comfortably for the long-term. Putting away seasonal clothes and curating a capsule wardrobe for our current weather was my way of temporarily managing/reducing stress in the temporary space I'm in.
The clothes that I stored away were in great shape, I wear them, like them and want to keep them. There's no point of getting rid of something that you love if you USE it. I wouldn't say that I was justifying keeping clothing, but more so trying to distinguish what I could get by with using for the next 2 months while still living here so that my closet would be minimal for now. Kind of like packing for a 2 month trip. Our lifestyle is different for the time being - in a tiny home in a new city, but will change substantially when we move. And at that time, I will appreciate having the things I've stored.
3. I always let Eunice and others logically explain what and why they're keeping something. I encourage it. I usually prompt that with "are you going to wear this?" which is a question I've been asking myself for years when it comes to my closet. At this point in my journey, I no longer need to ask myself that. Why? Because I feel very confident with what I own. I'm comfortable with it. For clients though, it's likely they never ask themselves that question, so it's more prominent in our dialogue. I want them to start thinking about what they keep and why. I don't ask them so that they justify it to ME. I ask it to bring awareness to the situation and build confidence in what they keep. The ultimate goal is to become their own Space Maker and find confidence in curating/maintaining their home without me.
4. I'm in what I call "After The Clutter" phase. I've been working at decluttering and finding my balance of what shtuff I have for over a decade. All homes require maintenance, but there's no need for me to do anymore major decluttering in my own home. I found my balance for where I'm at in life and I'm really satisfied with it. We're in the season of our lives (mid-late 30s) where we're wanting to settle down after years of traveling.
I think that all of this Space Maker business is best done within a long-term context. For example, our long-term plans involve buying our own home and staying put. From here on out, I want to invest in long-term pieces (whether that be furniture, appliances, clothes, etc...) and keep them for a long time. Decluttering those things I want to take with us into that chapter would be pointless because I would have to rebuy them soon after.
5. This is so important to understand when it comes to Eunice (or anyone else who's been featured on this channel). The fact that they've asked for help because they are overwhelmed by the amount of things they have. They want to live with less. And they want my help to declutter it.
It's my job to remember their goals and help nudge them in that direction. For Eunice, she had said MANY times that she wanted to get rid of all her clothes and that she wanted to live with less stuff and "declutter like crazy."-her words.
When I would sense that she didn't have a reason for keeping something, I would press her about it because my job is to balance understanding and being a butt kicker (because that's why they asked for my help in the first place). I also ask because I think part of what makes your home intentional is when you know exactly what and why you have something.
6. For Eunice's closet specifically, you guys will soon see that all of those things (particularly in those dressers) she ended up decluttering ENTIRELY when she moved. This was what she wanted to do from DAY 1 of our declutter 2 years ago, but each time we started to work at it she'd change her mind. In the back of my mind I always knew this and tried to nudge her toward HER goal. With each declutter pass, we got a little closer to that goal until she (on her own time) was ready to let it all go. That's long winded, but I hope it clarifies some things. When the book launches it will clarify even more 💛 because we're all on our own Space Maker journey.
I am always amazed at how needy kitties become when you’re in the middle of something. I can go an hour and not see one of my three. Then, I start something, and one is in my lap, one is licking my arm, and the third one is screaming for treats! I love the top you’re wearing in this video! I had a pair of white pants that I loved, that weren’t lined. I finally found a pair of white, silk, long underwear that I wore under them, and it was like lining. Since I usually wore them in summer, most places are air conditioned so the silk didn’t make me warm at all. Now, I don’t buy white pants unless they’re lined. ❤️❤️❤️
SO TRUE for cats. The minute I turn on the camera Izzy suddenly needs all of my attention. They're so funny like that. AND these aren't lined 🤣 that's a great tip and I'll look for that before buying next time. And I've never heard of silk tights.. I've gotta do some searching for that.

I know I can't blame everything on Izzy.... but you'd be surprised how many piles of perfectly folded clothing she knocks on the floor when she climbs around. But she's cute so we forgive her 💞 Hearts for Izzy.

It was a wonderful difference, like a breathe of fresh air. I've begun to think of sorting decluttering and organising areas of my life as a gift now-me is giving to future-me. Future-you would have gotten out of bed to get ready and opening the door to your wee cupboard would have been like receiving love sent to you from yesterday-you 😊 Also, Izzy in her little spring vest and being all up in your grill demanding to be supervisor - well - she's just adorable!
To cut down om hanger space I hang a shirt or jacket over a tank top. Izzy is so stylish in her spring ensemble 🐈⬛

Im so the opposite in that i have stuff i like but not enough basics or if i do they wear quicker because they are washed more frequently (underwear, bras ect) i need to do less impulse buying and more basic, better quality buying, but i find when im looking i cant find it.

It sounds silly to say, but those hangers have changed everything. It's so peaceful in there now.
I had the same issue with clothes falling from the hangers and I ordered some affardable velvet hangers from Amazon, too. That really saved my closet organization because everytime, I openeded it up, it looked messy just from the fallen clothes 😅👗 Btw: Your style is amazing. 😃

I’m my experience of living in diverse homes in India, esp Mumbai, I know that lack of living space is one of the biggest stressors. What to do? Can’t help but adjust .. till it breaks you and/ or you get lucky. Admire your courage to show this. Makes it real for all of us.

Vacuum bag! Even for the blankets and pillows under the bed. My dorm room closet was bigger than yours! That was many, many moons ago!
I love those! We don't own a vacuum at the moment to suck them down or I totally would. They're such great space savers.
OMG Izzy is so precious. I didn’t know they had dye to dye your whites white! 😱 Great video and I need you at my house but you would want to cry in my closet 🙈. As far as white pants I have to wear a longer top or blazer over that covers. If I don’t have something that covers I will sometimes wear at night to a dimly lit venue 😊
Something I do to keep tops from falling off hangers is taking the tags at the collar and if I can take the loop over the hook part of the hanger, then put the shoulders on the base. 😊

It’s so funny how Izzy kept sitting on your lap while you sorted. My 11 year old Siamese, Alina, does the same to me! Other than a spring outfit, is there another reason that Izzy is wearing a shirt? I use wooden hangers and of the 80 between the four of us I may have broken 3. Plus, they make our closets look so nice! :)
hehe, yes.... we use pjs to help calm her down. She has so much anxiety and they help turn her from maniac to biscuit maker.

Closets get out if control easily. I have those velvet hangers and my two cats Pixie and Dixie still manage to climb on top of them and knock down stuff. But that is my problem as I need to keep the door shut. Lol scratches for Izzy hugs

what about using those fabric clothing organizers on the shelf? you know the ones...folded clothes sit upright in the pockets.....those have helped me tremendously in my tiny shoebox apartment.........AND they fold down to nothing when you pack up to move

I have 4 bras all in neutral and two workout bras(obviously I don’t work out that much).. I have 4 winter pjs and 4 summer pjs. I wear one bra for 3 days and wear one pjs for 5 days.

I too just moved and I now have a very small closet. I have to keep my closet organized and tidy because my closet has no doors. My husband has his own small closet. I just be sure I don't clutter my closet and donate clothing that I am not wearing or doesn't fit.
That's nice that your husband has his own space too, I'm sure that's so helpful.

Not done watching but wow! I like small spaces but showing what’s actually required to film a closet reorg was extremely eye opening. There’s small & too small. It occurs to me that the only way these too small spaces and hand laundry and small closets create a circle. No room for American washers/dryers and no room to accumulate large clothes pile to make washing efficient makes frequent hand washing necessary and if you do that then you can wear clothes more often and etc. Interesting!
Edit: Clutter draws clutter. When something falls from hanger one is a heck of a lot more likely to give that poor lonely garment on the floor company by placing other items there as well
Haha loved your EDIT. It’s so true. And I would rank this as TOO SMALL long term for where we’re at in life with our family. But it’s been a fun challenge and hey, we still all like each other 💛😝

We have 3 cats, and they always love to lay on fresh laundry! We have their bedding, switch it out to do llaundry, stuff gets washed and they can make biscuit on their own fresh blankets! Spoiled! Lol Izzy is so sweet, wanting to be in your lap.. not sure she liked her outfit?

Omg… April I just got my medium hulken and it’s a life saver, I almost want to get two. One for just in case when I move again in a year. I am so glad you promote products that are such life changers… if anyone is a city dweller or commuter without a personal car, a hulken is the best investment ever.

As for the straps.. I don’t have an issue with them, I am short and have short arms so they are the perfect length for me

I also use the felt hangers, amazing, I used to use wooden, but now I only have a few for the heavier coars. Poor Izzers🤣 Yes! We're still waiting on some visa paperwork but hoping to move before or by August. You can buy property as a foreigner, but getting a mortgage is the hardest part. It's difficult but not impossible.

I was going to ask if you can put a dresser ANYWHERE in your apartment... When we lived in a small place, we put a dresser in a hallway just outside the bedroom. So I would wake up for work before my husband, grab my clothes from the closet, grab undies and socks from the dresser, and get dressed in the bathroom. But I see a note that maybe you are moving so hopefully this won't be for long!

They are! They've really stepped up their game. It can be hard to find them at all of their locations, but when you do it's an absolute gold mine.
I just hate velvet hangers, I bought 5 and one of them broke instantly, the other 4 are just for jackets I don't use :P

I wouldn't like you to take it as criticism, but rather as an observation. I think that if you can't maintain the initial order you created, it's because the method doesn't fit you and your daily habits and routines. I don't think it's a problem of organization, but rather a matter of adapting the method to you, not the other way around.
Izzy is as whiny as my fat orange tabby. It makes me want to cuddle the heck out of him!
