      @titomish5914 my girlfriend and her dad used alot of 6.5 back when it was new and quickly lost interest in it bc of its lack of knock down power. It's an awesome flat shooting cartridge but as for hunting things like deer is was unimpressive. Lots of tracking even on a double lung but they consistently drop deer with 308 just bc it dumps it's energy better.

    I have both. However for me the 6.5 Creed. I like that it has less recoil so much so that I stay on target and see my impacts. Therefore I can have follow up shots faster and be able to make adjustments if needed. The 308 recoil tends to take me off target. So if my shot is off I would need a spotter to help call my shot if I’m off target. I’d rather stay on target and see my impacts to have faster follow up shots if needed or be able to make quick adjustments based on me seeing my impacts. Everyone will have their opinion or preferences so basically what works for the individual. As long as you get rounds on target with good shot placement.

    Long time fanboy of 308, but after I got my first 6.5 I only shoot 308 out of my SCAR17 now. To have an appreciable difference in energy under 500 you really should be using as long of a barrel as you can with as heavy of a high BC bullet as you can which then just makes it cumbersome in the field. Past 500 the 6.5 really has longer legs than the 308.

    Under 500 meters the 308 is gonna have more muzzle energy also its effective from shorter barrels as it doesn't lose as much velocity as a smaller diameter bullet.
    308 is ideal for a battle rifle role with 16-20 inch barrels while 6.5 is better for a dmr/ sniper role as its more aerodynamic better for the 20-24 inch barrels for that role.
    For practical applications 308 is my winner!

Theres not a big enough difference to make a difference. Both rounds can hit 1 mile yes,6.5 does it better. Both rounds penetrate 3/8th inch steel yes,308 does it better. Both rounds are stopped by 1/2inch steel. It doesnt matter what you hit with either,its dieing. At the end of the day just buy one. Its like a Lamborghini vs Ferrari. Its the same thing.

      There's never gunna be a time where someone misses by inches past 700 yards and the target runs off to live happily ever after and you say "I wish I had a 6.5".
      And there's never gunna be a time where you hit a target with 2,000ft-lbs of energy and it runs off to live happily ever after and you say "I wish I had a 308"
      For hunting they will both get the job done.
      Ballistic stats are purely for educational purposes. In hunting they are equal.
      Maybe one is "better" than the other against barriers or accuracy. Who cares. You're not coming home empty handed just because you went out with one cartridge and not the other. Pick either one and you will have a successful hunt.

    I like that the overwhelming majority chose .308 as it's a common round that's been around for awhile. This was my initial choice as I am only 22 i only started shooting handgun last year i don't really have a ton of money for firearms. I'm looking for a bolt rifle. I have a few handguns , an AR shotgun(semi auto mag fed) and a Ruger 10/22. While all of these are exceptional for either hunting or personal defense, none of these in my case are capable of shooting much past 150 yards with any accuracy. I'm looking for something to step it up. Maybe an AR-15 to extend me to 300 meters. Then a bolty in .308 for some distance shooting. I'm building a collection and I have a plan in mind I'm just taking my time I'm focusing on getting a truck instead of a car right now so my priorities are on automotives instead of firearms at the moment. I'm a big gunsmith person though. I love studying ballistics.

    Load both and have used both. While the 308 has been accurate to 1200 yards for me on targets, I prefer the 6.5 creed. This is with my hand loads. The little 6.5 when loaded to its potential, in a 26" barrel has moor range with fps and energy. Within 600 both will do on Whitetail sized critters with the right bullet. The little 6.5 with a good 140gr loaded right will smack 20% gel at 900 yrds. with the right loading and bullet. Has good penetration and bullet function. Sound unreasonable? Look at Barbour Creek Shooting Academy videos of a test on gel with 6.5 creed at 900 yards. That's a long poke but just goes to show how much bullet B.C., sectional density and construction play a role.

    Im moving over to 6.5. I like the idea of 6 inch groups at 1000. Itll do what i need and do it with more accuracy.
    Im surrounded by cow farms, if i was back home where i grew up id still be with 308. I was raised at the foot of a mountain so visibility wasn't far in the woods.

      I own both. Love the 308 but being full of shrapnel and busted up, the 6.5 creed for me 99% of the time I pick one up. You can watch impacts for follow up shots easily. Shoot 100 rounds and not feel it at all. Hand loading to the potential gives it some oomph. Go to Barbour Creek Shooting Academy videos. Look up 6.5 creedmoor 140gr, (handloads) into 20 % gel at 900 yards. Not saying shoot anything at that range. Especially if you aren't trained, haven't the trigger time or not within your capabilities. It does show the potential however of the little 6.5 creed that most like to poke fun at.
      Just saying

    .308 for long range marksmanship development. It requires more wind reading skills than 6.5 for good scores so it demands development. Also barrel life is much longer than 6.5.

  • @JamesW7723
    @JamesW7723 21 день тому

    Longtime Hunter here, I own both a 308 and a 6.5. The 308 is superior to the 6.5 for several reasons. The first reason being is 308 is much more forgiving for beginner, hunters and beginner long range precision shooters as it is less likely to be bullied by the wind and is less likely to be bullied by Temperature as well. 6.5 is only able to do what 308 can do because of the amount of powder behind the round. 6.5 is more likely to be bullied by hot and cold and wind. Although shooting with 6.5 Creedmoor builds, good precision, shooting habits when you move from 6.5 to 308 I have often noticed myself over correcting shots and others when they go from 6.5 to 308 that there is an adjustment period for them.

    • @MJ-or1wo
      @MJ-or1wo 17 днів тому

      6.5 has a higher ballistic coefficient so it would be better in wind. Both bullets are going about 2600fps depending on projectile weight. The 6.5 on paper is a better round based on the reasons you’ve given but 308 is great for barrel life and possibly accessibility. there is no reason to replace your 308 for marginally better long range performance.

    • @JamesW7723
      @JamesW7723 17 днів тому

      @@MJ-or1wo ballistic coefficient is one factor but you also have to work with the weight of the round. The heavier round is and the faster it’s going means it is more likely to bully the wind and all other factors for most interactions upto 600 yards at least in my experience. I’ve pushed and put my 308 on a 4ftx3ft paper targe at 1,200 yards within 5 shots and I’ve yet to do that with my 6.5 creedmoor. It’s a great round and it’s cheap but it’s nothing compared to 308 in my personal opinion.

    • @MJ-or1wo
      @MJ-or1wo 15 днів тому

      @@JamesW7723 weight has very little to do with overcoming wind compared to bc, the diameter and more modern design of 6.5 is better in windy conditions. i understand you seem to be a better shot with your 308 but based on just pure facts the 6.5 is a better round at distance, despite you being better with 308. you can just google what is a better round in wind 6.5 or 308. i have both 6.5 and 308, my 308 groups better so i use it for deer season and if i would want to take bigger game like elk further away i would use my 7prc.
