Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Regardless of what cartridge we hunt with, I think we can all agree that you're a class act Ron. Thanks for the content!
Many thanks DW.
Could not agree more. Sending love from Nova Scotia. And by the way I’m going elk hunting in the south east kootenays in two weeks and I will be carrying my 30-06. Cheers

For .308, if hand loaders want more velocity, they can use Palma brass with small rifle primers. Lapua makes the best brass for that. You start to see why Hornady developed the 30 TC.
Biggest advantage I find with .308 Win is short action for shooter-rifle interface from positions, as well as carrying.
I like 7-08 and .260 Rem better than pretty much any .30 bore, unless I need bigger bore for ELR, and I'm still more of a fan of 7mm for ELR, particularly the 195gr EOL.
30-06 is amazing. But I use 308 more often because it takes less powder when reloading which means I can load more rounds for the same price. And for my purposes, 308 has plenty of power.
But again, the 30-06 is a wonderful cartridge and I’m sure I’ll buy another 30-06 rifle again someday.
wow. -- such a simple idea !! never thought of that--- great point---they're NOT giving the reloading stuff away cheap !!
I shoot heavy large magnums mainly Weatherby. Putting in a whole can of Powder never bothered me. If you don't run them hot it's like keeping a Ferrari in 1st gear. If I wanted efficiency I would shoot a 22 short. Have a good day. By the way I have had severe MAGNUMITIS all my life. Usually, you grow out of it but I'm 70 and thinking of a 577 T-Rex or 600 Nitro. Hunted Elk with 340, 375, 378 Wby, 458WinMag, 375 H&H. Had a 460 Wby never got to hunt Elk with it. Had a reputation at the range of shooting BIG GUNS.
I use the .308 because it is much friendlier to shoot, and is more than enough for any game I hunt.
I believe NATO and the UN forces use 308. In case we fight NATO or UN we can get ammo from the dead soldiers
I have a 308 but for some reason i cant kick wanting a 30-06. Probably just the history of the cartridge... And the money sitting in the bank doing nothing 😅
Lived in Alaska 37 years, shot probably 60 Big Game animals with many different calibers. But in the end the 30-06 was my do it all go to caliber...
Same here. Just not the 37 year part. 👍
7mm rem mag is my go to
Starlings tremble at the sight of my pellet rifle.
Even for brown bear?
@@Sam-cf9iw 30-06 rem, you sure about that 🧐😂 but fair enough. I think the big fad with all the new cartridges is because everyone already knows how good the 30-06 is and just wants to play around and say they own something different. I’ve got my eye on Hornadys 7mm PRC when I rebarrel my rem mag
The 30-06 has been around for more than 100 years and has been in every type of rifle/action system. It has been in three wars and is the benchmark to all other cartridges to be measured by. The 308 runs close in terms of ballistics and does excellent for hunting as well.
WW1, WW2, Korean, and some use in Vietnam.
@@themountainraven Correct
In Vietnam they used the Remington 700 and the Winchester 70. Both rifles are known for great accuracy. I can tell you know your history and firearms.
Is it possible to take big game with a 308?
Facts.
Great video Ron! An Old School senior hunter, there are three things I carry into the field with me; my trusty 30-06, .45 long colt revolver, and my favorite hunting knife. They have never let me down no matter what I'm hunting.
Excellent. -- yeah -- my ( OG ) input is only one deviation ... it's is a .45 1911..( jus do to familiarity).. (not knockdown). but I'm THERE !!
Great to see you recommending who tee who, he's done so much testing, deserves props
06 is hard to beat for versatility. Great do anything North American cartridge. Great work Ron.
I have both, I load the 30-06 with 220 grain round nose thumpers for tight timber running open sights.I load 168 grain in .308 for medium range work and .300 win mag with 208 eldm for long range work. Great content Ron ! Cheers from North Idaho
Thanks Joe. And howdy to you up there in my old stomping grounds. Got my 1st ID turkey near Bonner's Ferry.
Six of one half a dozen of the other. Both excellent proven rounds. Owned and loved both. Excellent commentary as always Ron, and really excited to hear you'll be tackling the .300 Savage and it's history, next.
You're destruction of the phrase
, OMG
Ron, i truly enjoy these caliber comparison videos and learn something with each one. Thanks for putting them on.
Another great video Ron. I'm a 30/06 fan. I harvested my first deer with my 30/06. I also watch who tee who's videos he really has some great comparison videos.
I would be delighted to have either one.
I own a 30'06 and my brother has a 308. The '06 seems to kick harder, not a lot, but it's noticeable. If I had it to do again, I'd get the 308. I have a 300 Win mag if I want a big boomer. The short action is nice and the difference in velocity & energy is minimal.
You just highlighted the weakness of all these cartridges that have a slight advantage over their close competitors. By the time you stretch them to the point where they're acceptable and their close competition isn't, they're usually just barely acceptable and you quickly realize you'd have been better off with a different class of cartridge. This is the main problem I have with the 6.5 Creedmore cult. By the time the Creedmore is pushed to distances where it can outshine its close competition, its resultant energy is borderline at best and you realize if you were going to be shooting at such distances you should have used another cartridge like a 7mm Rem Mag or 6.8 Western.
The ranges and bullet weights where .308 and 30-06 match each other, they both perform extremely well. Once you stretch 30-06 to the point where it really outperforms the .308, you should have used a .300 Winchester or Weatherby Magnum instead.
You know it doesn’t matter one bit to me.......have used them both and the deer do not know the difference. Both are outstanding cartridges and you could never go wrong with either one of them......
@@bdwilcox personally where i think the 6.5 grendel really shines is: fits in an AR-15, deer/hog capable to whatever distance you really want, cheap enough to plink with, very low recoil, lets you take your gun to the 600 yard mark at the range cheap and easy with plenty of accuracy to do so. honestly just an amazing dedicated deer cartridge. what its not is an elk gun, and i wouldnt choose it for black bear either. by chance, did you mean to say creedemore not grendel?
I have noticed the same thing, the 30-06 has noticeably more recoil than the 308.
@@hotramen5952 Grendel has become my favorite cartridge. Fairly inexpensive ammo that does almost everything I need. I own a few of them in barrels from 12-20 inches. I may even but a 22" just because😀
No replacement for displacement. I appreciate your videos Ron!! Very common sense approach and I appreciate it. I'm a handloader and have been using the 30-06 since I was 12 years old. I have an appreciation for both cartridges. They both work very well, but I prefer the 200gr Nosler partition in the 30-06 for hunting elk. When I'm shooting precision, I'll grab the 308 with a 168 match grade bullet. Short action vs. long action doesn't mean squat to me. It's like comparing belted cartridges to non belted "magnums". In the whole scheme of things, it doesn't make a hill of beans. Some of these arguments are quite laughable at best. Keep up the good work Ron!!
As a national Match shooter for 20 years back in the day I started out with a Garand and eventually moved to an M1a and loaded thousands of rounds for both. IMHO the 30/06 is the better hunting cartridge. It can do anything the 308 can do plus handle heavier bullets if needed. I have found that the 308 will edge it out in accuracy but in the long run you're just splitting hairs.
The .30-06 will send the 180 gr bullet at same velocities or greater as the .308 sends 168 grainers....
@@mdd1963 doesn't kill a deer any deader
Another great video Ron. The good thing is, they're both old workhorses that aren't going anywhere! You're right about "Who T Who's" channel being a lot of fun to watch. He loves suggestions for testing cartridges and bullet performance. Much like yourself Ron.
Some facts from Ron Spomer. Thanks. Have that old Model 70 Win in 06 all these years for a reason.
🤠 Great Video! Even though I have a 30-06, for the type of hunting I do with that particular rifle, you actually confirmed for me why my replacement gun for my 30-06 will be - a 308 Winchester! The places I plan to use it, my shots would never exceed 300 yards and with a 165 grain bullet, it would do exactly what I need it to do for elk hunting! Except it will be in a lighter recoiling and handier (more compact rifle - for easy target acquisition in thick timber)! Thanks Ron! 😁👍
You can do almost anything with the .30-06 rd. a true American classic !! 👍
My experience has born this out to be true. I’ve loaded 195’s in 308 up to 2550 in a 20” barrel and 200’s up to 2700 in a 22” 30-06. I do think the 30-06 is ideally loaded with 180-200 gr bullets. With sleek 190’s and 200’s its trajectory is creedmoor like but with more authority. No one should be mad at that.
@ K Bob - Cutting edge high BC bullets and modern propellants have really give life to the old gal, the 30-06. Work up a good 208-grain ELD-M load with a suitable powder and primer and you are looking at a bona-fide 1500 yard capable cartridge, which is firmly in 300WM territory. Sure it will kick you harder than 6.5 CM, but that slug will arrive with considerably greater authority, too. Pick your poison...
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 you’re preaching to the choir. My 06 load is a 200 gr Sierra game king, which oddly enough has a better form factor than the matchkings, over a good stuff charge of reloader 16. Ive seen claims of ppl getting 215 Berger’s up to 2800 with RL 26, but my load does what I need it to
@@K-bob_45 - Okie dokie. Always good to see another '06 man in the house!
The 30/06 Achley Improved is a great round as it Maximizes velocity and still shoots 30/06 cartridges in a pinch.
Great shout-out to Whoo tee who. I absolutely love that guys channel and that's how I found yours. I enjoyed this video
30-06 has been my choice and has worked for 27 years for coyote, whitetail, mule deer, black bear, and elk here in Washington State. Still the best caliber choice for "one rifle" you can make hands down. 55 grain to 220 grain and everything in-between. LONG LIVE THE 30-06! 👑
Eh, if youre gonna go with .30cal then you might as well use a 300 win mag, it shoots the same bullets but faster and harder, not much more recoil.
Never seen a 55gr 30cal load. Must be Biden's Pecker
While a member of the rifle team in california we changed from M1's to M14's. The M1 garand firing the 30 cal gov, 30-06, and the M14 firing the 308, or 7.62mm. What a difference at long range. The elevation settings for the M1 were far lower than the M14 and windages were less effected with the 30-06.
Military ditched the 06 to the 308 and used to this day.
I recently watched the Who Tee Who video on which a he shot concrete blocks with a 30-06 & a 308. Both were 150 grain bullets and both did the same thing. They both went through 3 walls & both broke the block.
Yes, most "deer" cartridges/bullets will do about the same things to concrete blocks. None were made for shooting concrete blocks. Fun to watch, but not a lot of useful data emerges.
It's good that we can have this discussion. Either will do the job.
I have an old Columbian Mauser Sporter,
98 Mauser action in 30-06 with about an 18 inch barrel.
Light, kicks like buggery IMO and at night has the muzzle flash of the Missouri!
It's been years since I hunted here in Australia but when you hit a pig,
it stays hit.
Mind you , my Carl Gustav model 96 Swedish Mauser Sporter in 6.5 x 55,
shoots flatter and the pigs can't tell the difference!
Great review mate.👍
Man you have the best sign-off on UA-cam!! Love it. Interesting video. Not a big fan of either but had no idea the 308 is as close in performance to the 30-06 as it is. I think an advantage as well for the 308 is the availability of rifles in the AR platforms also.
Thanks Sako. I figure it never hurts to remind ourselves of our responsibilities as shooters/hunters representing our long sport hunting heritage. Practicing respect for gun safety and sustainable use of wildlife are essential. Cheers.
You mentioned that the heavier 308 bullets are subsonic. Reminds me of what my cousin used to say about his old 30-40 Krag. He said that it was so slow that he would shoot at the deer and go stand by the deer and wait for the bullet to get there. But, it really meant business when it finally got there.
bullshit, no 308 bullets are subsonic.
Another good video well done 30/06 is the go in my books
I always wondered if the .308 velocity would be higher than the ‘06 in a 16” or 18” barrel. I never wanted a .308 but love other cartridges based on it. Especially the .243, (I’m getting recoil shy as I get older). Good video!!!
Only problem with the .243 is if you’re hoping for factory loads right now you won’t find any.
Absolutely! And the price if you do find it! I haven’t bought a factory load in over 30 years. Wait! Dang I’m old!
@ Bryan Schwertner - The answer depends on what propellant is being used, specifically how fast it burns. Both the .308 Winchester and 30-06 can be loaded with faster-burning propellants or slower, it just depends on your needs and wants. All things being equal, the 30-06 is going to push that pill faster, on the basis of the long action case alone, whereas the .308 is a short-action.
Very true. I use a fast powder, IMR4198, in my 10” 7mm TCU and 14” .222. Easy to get higher velocity (relative to short barrel length). Haven’t really experimented with my .243 22” vs wife’s 18” except with medium burn rate IMR4350 and H414. Would be interesting to run 3031 in the shorty to see if I can get to 3000 with 85game king.
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 I use a .35 Whelen which is an expanded 30-06 case. I can push a 225 grain bullet at an average of 2816 fps without maximum loads. I use 4064 powder for that but I can't use it in my 30-06 and push a 220 grain bullet anywhere near that velocity. I think in my case the diameter of the bore has to do with that.
The winner is the right choice of bullet and the right choice of caliber and shot placement for the job at hand. I have been shooting and hunting for over 30 years, and I love every single rifle I have owned in almost every caliber. I love your videos Ron. I really don't like these comparison videos though. A rifle handed down to a son or daughter will probably be that favorite caliber. Showing what types of bullets and their functions would be better to help new shooters make the right choice for their job. And informing them of shot placement would seal the deal. Keep up the good work Ron.
Thanks Russell. But I think comparison videos are extremely useful for helping us understand the physical realities of various cartridges and the bullets they push. I usually try to compare while using the same bullet or ones with quite similar B.C.s. This clearly shows any differences in drop, drift, and remaining energy. After that is known, one can select the bullet type for needed application. And I cover bullet types and performance in my video ua-cam.com/video/We6OM03wSEI/v-deo.html
When I load I go up until I see pressure signs and then back off a bit, when loading like this I get around 250 fps more out of my 30.06 than the 308 with 168 bullets and 180 gr bullets. I can shoot a 178 gr eldx faster in my 30.06 than a nosler 168 bt in the .308 so it makes a huge difference in my book its like the difference between a 6.5 creedmoor and a 6.5 PRC. I also think the 30.06 shines with the 180 gr bullets.
Great info JDG I have a c bolt hunter in .308 but grew up shooting 30-06.
250 fps is not a insignificant difference like many would say exists between the 308 and 30-06.
Like they say, it's a poor man's magnum.
@@Squishysforbreakfast its like a magnum with good barrel life
Great video! One thing I have found is speed is one thing! Accuracy another! They can go hand in hand of detrimental to each other! As a hand loader there is an art to it and a lot of factors related to it!
Both great cartridges. But to me neither are superior long range cartridges. Ill take the lighter 308 with a short action and a shorter barrel for practically the same performance in 150-168 class bullets. Id bet that load data probably was using a longer barrel on the 06
if my intent is shoot further i’ll pack a 7mag or a 300 win. No doubt the 06 is a one gun to do all but where is the fun in that lol. Cheers!
Your last sentence had me laughing !!!! And I couldn't agree more about how you said it !!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@Cody William - Re: "Both great cartridges. But to me neither are superior long range cartridges."
You might be surprised what the old 30-06 can do employing modern high-BC projectiles and propellants. Using a 208-grain Hornady ELD-M or A-Max, plus a good powder and primer, and you are looking at a bona-fide 1500-yard supersonic load. That's firmly in 300WM territory. Granted, with those same tools, the big 300WM can push out further, but can your shoulder handle it? For high BC numbers and excellent LR performance, a lot of guys use something in 6.5-7mm anyway. Unless throw weight is an issue, in which case 300WM, 300 NM, 338 LM, etc.
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 So much to explore with ballistics .... I only wish I had the time, resources, and suitable range to go investigating the options for their effectiveness ...sigh ...
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 I get your point and just like you said about 6.5-7mm my little 7mm08 prs rig with a 162 gr ELD M at 2750fps does the same. Hello from Oklahoma my friend. I have always loved the 30 06
Right on!
I like my .30-06 because I can shoot lighter loads and basically have a .308 but I can’t shoot heavy loads in a .308 and match my .30-06
I love my .308.I feel it's the perfect eastern hunting caliber.200gr and over bullets are too much for it with it's lesser case capacity.
I'm happy with both.
Great fair and data driven comparison!
Have them both but for hunting 30-06
For 2 legged game loved the m240 in Iraq over the 5.56 M249. But both had their role. The 30-06 my first big game hunting rifle of the 70’s and still hunt with it a Model 70 XTR even here in Alaska.
I started off with a 300sav love that little gun

Great video. Thx for showing. And thx for adding WHO's
The best one is the one you are accurate and confident with.
I'm one of the "higher pressure" guys. I mentioned it on the rise and fall of 308 video. For clarification, I mention it because it means the .308 is closer to .30-06 than people generally believe. Not to imply that across the board there is no difference. Just that the difference is pretty insignificant across the range of bullet weights at ~100fps. Do you happen to know what the pressure level is on that 220gr going 2,250fps? I ran a simulation (24" barrel, 1:10 twist, 220gr, on 37.1gr of Varget) that gave 2,254 fps, but the pressure was only 48.2kpsi. Bumping the powder to achieve shy of 62kpsi, changing to 40.2gr of Varget in the same set-up gave a muzzle velocity of 2,420 fps and 61.6kpsi. (All theoretical based on pressure modeling) But that would theoretically put it back in the ~100 fps range again. Just some thoughts.
I never have seen a deer/hog that could move faster than the minute fps that the 30-06 has over the .308.
Also, the .308 has less recoil than the 30-06 and that's a plus for me. When I shoot a gun I don't want to feel like I've been 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.
So for me the.308 is perfect since I rarely shoot over 200 yards and most commonly 100-150 yards.
Hello Mr Spomer. I use both calibers for hunting.
It always depends on what game u want to hunt.
For hard game, I definitely prefer the 30.06.
4 hunt pigs, i prefer the .308, that's enough in most cases and i can use my silencer.
I find that the .308 shoots a little softer than the somewhat "rougher" 30.06 and the .308 is a little more accurate.
Greetings from a german hunter.
Same here kimber 308 with the silencer is sweet
8:14 if you're not hunting cinderblocks you're missing out on some goooood eatin'. A cinderblock sandwich when the cinderblock is nicely rare? Awesom!!! Sure it's a bit crunchy but who doesn't enjoy a bit of crunch?
With 2 of my rifles, both Tikka t3s, same barrel length, I've been able to get my 308 to out run the 06 with 168 Barnes ttsx. Tested 6 or so different powders, same primers, and tested with different brass to get the fastest combo. Max charges on both.
But is a negligible difference, but still I'll take the powder savings
The 7.62 x 51 was designed to be "Ballistically comparable" to the 30-06, mostly similar, but not completely.
For instance a certain armor might protect you from a .308 AP round, but not a 30-06 AP, etc.
30-06 will have more authority with the bigger bullet weights.
Making it more ideal than the .308 for big game, but I wouldn't scoff at either.
Many years ago I shot a 30-06. Heavy Springfield rifle, equaled a bit less recoil. Accuracies impeccable out to 500yrds.
These days with ammunition prices 308 fills the ammunition cans. A little more recoil, flat shooting, enough accuracy out to 500yrds.
It’s always a pleasure to have both on hand.
I think Carlos Hathcock said that the 30-06 was his favorite and was used on most of his confirmed kills.
I ended up selling my 308 wasn’t worth the collection just kept my 3006 n 270 but gotta love that smack from the 270
I'd like your opinion on The Moose hunting style that was passed down through generations. Using campfire smoke to kill human was taught to us, also vocally calling them in range with birch bark call.
My cousin and I sit separate 300 year old treestand blinds that are about 100 long paces from each other. The one who calls in the bull takes it out, while the other in the blind uses the Moose Paddles to turn its attention towards when in range for a good headshot.
If my cousin fills his tag and mine in 1 year I really don't mind just as long as we come home with our quota, and continue to hunt till we do so.
2022 Holitna hunt, 5 cow Moose came out of the other side of the field. Five mins later the biggest monster Bull ive seen in years with 6 brow tines each side came out and I called it into within 30 long paces. I dumped my mag of Partition 180s and loaded 220 Partitions outta my pack.
I noticed a 3 spike off to the left at 45 to 50... it stopped at the salt pile and looked towards the other blind... I sent one over to him and he dropped in his tracks.
My cousin bewildered didn't know what the hell and why did that bigger one not drop.... he didn't notice the 3 spike drop and was tunneled into the 6 brow tine bull. Swearing up a big fuss he said WTF you let that once in a lifetime go for this one, I said yup! quota met! He finally understood why I let the Monster go with those 5 females😂 looked 70" or better!

Ask a Vietnam veteran who was a sniper when our military transitioned from the 30-06 to the .308 sniper weapons or read a book written by some of them. My granddaddy (WWII) told me told that when I buy my first rifle get a 30-06.
Nice shoutout to WTH, it’s a good little channel flingin them “boolots”
My full length Ruger M77 Hawkeye is chambered in 30 06, my Ruger M77 Frontier is chambered in .308. I call them my rifle and carbine.
I had a .308 but I got rid of it. All I have read seems to point to the fact the .308 tends to be a very accurate round. No one can say exactly why and it seems to be a compilation of everything about it. I do however prefer the 30-06 but that's just me. Up until a few years ago the problem with the .308 was bullet construction. The heavy bullets didn't have enough velocity at range to mushroom properly. I imagine that has changed with new technology.
my grandfather always said the .308 was the perfect balance of velocity and accurate bush trajectory. the 30-30 being low velocity punches through the bush without getting thrown off trajectory by branches but suffers from range limitations while high velocity rounds can be thrown off target easily by brush but maintain a much longer range. the 308 has this happy little middle ground of range and bush capabilities making it "just right"
30 06 does exactly that lol 😂
Case capacity doesn't lie... LOL Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!
Always!
Shot both recently side by side and the .308 kicks like a mule for sure
Only thing I can make sense of in this video with these numbers is that a 30-06 has a flimsier brass set up so that’s the case doesn’t perform as well as the newer .308 that’s the only rationalization I can make with all that extra chamber space for powder and longer bullets but not getting it by much
Ron, I hunt with a M1 Garand. 30-06 is what you got. It'll NEVER fail ya ! ! !
Look at the difference between the 6.5mm Creedmoor and the .260 Remington. I wonder if you could do the same thing with the Ought-6. Give it a longer neck for a longer bullet.
If I think back to when I first started hunting back in the ‘60s, I think a lot of people looked at the 308 and thought what’s the point of a calibre that is almost but not quite a 30-06 (aka the 30 not 6)? However, you could get a Winchester 88 and a Savage 99 in 308 (before the BLR), and they were liked among lever action fans and the left handed. It certainly became popular in subsequent decades, especially as the whole short vs long action thing became a thing. Deer don’t notice the difference.
I think the reason for this misconception is that people don’t understand what 7.62/.308 is supposed to be.
It was intended to match the power and ballistics of M2 Ball .30-06 government ammunition (147-150 grain FMJ bullet at 2700-2750 fps) in a short action length cartridge. And and 7.62 NATO M80 Ball does that. The difference comes when you really load the .30-06 to it’s full capacity (150 grain bullet at ~2900 fps) or when you load heavier, longer bullets (165s at ~2800, 180s at ~2700, 200s at ~2600, and 220s at ~2500). The 7.62 NATO/.308 Win cartridge was never really intended for anything heavier than 150 grains. For the longest time our military was still using sniper rifles in .30-06 (well after it was no longer standard issue) because of the Aught Six’s capability to push those heavier match grade bullets faster than 7.62 NATO.
Now don’t let me rain on your parade. If the biggest thing you’re hunting are whitetail deer within 300 yards, go for the .308. It is plenty of power to take them on. If you’re going out west hunting Mule Deer, Black Bear, or Elk out to a quarter mile, maybe consider the .30-06 with the 175 grain bullets on up to the 200 grain bullets.
Some of those velocity differences were probably within the variation from round to round in the same box of ammo anyway. Shoot what you like, and stop worrying what someone else says is "best". Will the elk notice that 40fps difference? I carry the '06 in the woods, and keep lots of .308 handy for the AR-10 platform. But that's just me.
I'm a fan of 30-06 for bolt action and my 308s are all semi auto, mostly AR 10s
I love both of them
For whitetail I like the 308 just because of the short action. 06 is probably the better all around round.
Ron you need to show the difference between a match or tactical vs a hunting bullet since all a reloader can find is the match type bullets.
Not a lot of difference. Match bullets are cup-and-core like old fashioned cup-and-core hunting bullets, but with more consistency/uniformity in jacket thickness and weight. Match bullets are usually sharply tipped hollow points, too, (at least for long range work.) They strive for perfect balance in match bullets. Hunting bullets can be bonded, segmented, partitioned, all copper, etc. etc. Tactical bullets vary based on need. Close range or far? Penetration through various materials or not?
There’s also a difference M80 Ball and modern 30-06. My only gripe is that M2 ball uses a different powder than M80 ball. This change with modern powder led to the ballistically similar performance. Now comparing M80 ball to off the shelf modern 30-06 they are vastly different!
308 was meant to emulate 30-06 in a shorter cartridge. However, since then, 30-06 got more attention, to the point that many original M1s can't handle modern 30-06 cartridges. Furthermore, a larger cartridge uses it's psi much more efficiently than a smaller cartridge. For example, the 50 BMG Max pressure is only 55,000 psi, less than either 308 or 30-06, and yet is much more powerful.
Nice shoutout to wtw. Enjoy his channel as well
Ron, impressed with your knowledge,, You should do a review on a round people are using for deer when they do not want them to run because of the small rented hunting spots. It stops deer faster than anything I have seen.. The 444
Excellent analysis, as usual!
I had a 30-06, and now have two 308s, a Kimber Select M84 (6.8lbs) and a CZ Varmint with the HS stock and 26in heavy barrel (14 lbs). I can get 155 Lapua Scenars moving 3000fps from that long barrel.
The 270 is the best all round caliber in Australia for all large game pigs, goats, kangaroo ,dear, right up to buffalo I have been shooting since 1960 and have used the 270 with handloads since 1966 and have taken all game here.
The older I get, the more I appreciate the somewhat softer recoil of the 308 to the 30-06. Why not think of the 308 as the 30-06's little brother? - it turns out both military rounds, while not the same, are good for hunting - enjoy the diversity found in your 2nd Amendment Right.
Thanks for posting I have really enjoyed and learned a lot you are really a great guy
The .308’s a great cartridge, but the.30-‘06 is just more versatile with its ability to handle the heavier bullets. A half inch of action length and a few ounces are splitting hairs.
In military ball loadings they are virtually ballisticly equivalent. Hunting or reloads, loads 30-06 wins. You're welcome.
They are both the best and superior to all others.
30-06 has many, many different grains compared to the 308. I’ve used the 308 for at least 15 yrs mainly because of its recoil and knock down ability. Rotor cuff surgery on my right shoulder and the 308 don’t hurt as bad compared to the 30-06. Personal preference.
For 30/06 iv got a old model 70 for 308 a ar10 they both do their job perfectly i use the 70 for deer and the ar for hogs due to the semi auto is great on large groups
I own both but if I had to choose 30-06 hands down.
Every video I've seen on penetration test show the exact same thing and that is they are the same even on steal targets
thanks the only time the 30,06 will start to out do the 308 is 300 yards and out that we have found they are both amazing rounds but 308 is amazing short action
I'm a 06 fan but since I've come to appreciate a handy 20 inch 308 is better option for most of my hunting sans the big exotic guided hunts a short handy 308 in a deer blind or oit the window of a truck( legal in tx on private land)is perfect for deer n hogs out to reasonable hunting distance.
Yes
I own rifles chambered in both 308 and 30-06 and have taken many deer and elk with both . I like the 308 for carrying because its lighter . My 30-06 is my go to caliber 90 % of the time , I have killed over 40 elk with my 06 . My old Ruger M77 30-06 has been packed many miles for the last 40 years and will continue to serve me well !
If you can't shot and hit your intended target, then it doesn't really matter now does it. They're both outstanding calibers.
I like both, I have both, and I handload for both, but when I go hunting, invariably I take the .308. So far, when I point it at something, that something falls over dead. It's not sexy like the 6.5 CM, it doesn't kill on both ends like some magnums, but since a long shot around here is 300 yards, that .308 just does the job without any fuss or fanfare. That's good enough for me.
The 30-06 is definitely a more powerful round I however choose the .308 because of a lesser recoil!
In comparison of the 308 up against the 30/06 no matter the comparison the word "almost" is used. 30/06, doing it right for over a century
