- Gaslighting is a term used to describe the psychological and emotional manipulation of someone's sense of reality. But what is the difference between gaslighting and just lying? Not always easy to spot as gaslighting often involves lying.

Thank you for a great description of the differences between lying and gaslighting. Spot on.
An example my ex lied when he said he wasn’t having an affair with a nearby barista.
When I saw both their behavior with my own eyes and he saw my reaction, he then *gaslit* me into thinking I am just a jealous insane naive projector who has trust issues and belongs in a mental institution because I am just so unable to understand how humans think and behave.. so that he could proceed with the obvious affair.
So much more insidious than simple lies and way too common a buzzword used online.
And you were attracted to this sort of person because?

Wish I had known the difference earlier, I would have been able to protect myself. Anyways, better late than never. But knowing the difference would have saved me from many a heartache and financial loss caused by (now I realize ) gaslighting by people I thought loved and cared for me.

Great video, thank you. Interestingly, when I confront the person who is always trying to gaslight and sabotage me, when she realizes she's been caught out in her response is always a lame regular lie, like "oh well, I don't remember that".

I found the worst part of the Gaslighter was when I gave her solid evidence that she had been gaslighting me. She just turned round and said "laughable". That is the kind of person that you are dealing with. Once you know the score, make as much distance, as you can between you, and that person.

When you spotted a narcissist you know right away when he or she tries to start gas lightening. Don’t trust even a word they say. Don’t let them make you doubting yourself.
I have a pair of narcissists in my life and it's wild how when one lies the other one will go right along with whatever wild made-up on-the-spot nonsense the first one said. The sad part is the lies they make up and run wih are completely pointless and serve no purpose whatsoever.
They will say X, then proclaim that it was me who said it and not them, then jump to claiming that it is a bald-faced lie I told and I need to be punished for it, (By them of course) even while knowing they are being recorded on body cam or cell phone or security cameras doing the whole routine start to finish.
The truth is like kryptonite a narcissist .

Gaslighting = Sophism ?
The ex narc arrived with a dog that I was terribly allergic to. He tried for two years to wear me down by saying I had agreed to have the dog. It was exhausting and I was constantly ill. Even after the dog was eventually rehomed, he would randomly still try to gaslight me about it. I didn't realise about narcissism at the time. I did question myself because he was so convincing, but I always said it isn't true because dogs make me very ill. He would never let go. I think it was like a test of if he had managed to break me fully yet.

The misuse and misunderstanding of "gaslight" is very damaging to actual victims. The word has become so diluted. Gaslighting is WAY more damaging that just lying.
Watch the movie Gaslight with Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman if you want to see a blow by blow example of what gas lighting is and how it is done. It will curl your hair.
The downside of depending on outer lies is not being able to trust inner voice for navigation of truth. That's why there is misery in feeling lost.
