This is the finest cornbread recipe I have ever made, my neighbor ate 4 pieces at my BBQ, the second time I made it my sister said it was the finest “looking” cornbread she had ever seen and when she tasted it she was gobsmacked . The best and such a compliment from Southern girls that can make great cornbread.

I saw this video and had to try it. Even bought the cast iron pan to make it and boy was I glad I did. This recipe was delicious and my husband and I just loved it! Thank you so much for this recipe!! The only thing I did different was I had to bake it another 10 minutes before the tooth pick was dry but I think my oven runs cool. Thanks again!!

Hi Rachel, I will definitely make this cornbread. It looks fabulous and I am a real cornbread person. I married a Yankee. He hated cornbread when we married, and now he adores it. The first time I told him to put butter and honey on it, he looked at me like I was insane. Now, when we eat cornbread, he wouldn’t eat it if there wasn’t butter and honey! He’s a real Southern Yankee now. Ha. This cornbread you made will be a favorite for us. Thank you so much for the recipe. It looks terrific! ❤

@@cindywyman7249 Hi Cindy, All the south is different. Texas though, seems to, for a majority, to hate sugar in their cornbread. Some of the other states use 2 tablespoons, some 1/4 cup. Some states make it as sweet as cake, which I feel it shouldn’t be. I had a friend who lived in New York City and they call it Johnny Cake. So, I think where you are from has an influence, but it is very personal to you and your taste buds. Honey and butter is another subject and that is subjective too! It’s all how you were raised and what you have been exposed to. I like 2 tablespoons of sugar in my cornbread, just to take out the bitterness of the cornmeal. Especially is you use more cornmeal than flour instead of a one to one ratio. Now here is the rub….(I am vegan due to health reasons and not happy about it, and I sometimes cheat) but my most favorite way to fix cornbread is like my Grandmother did. Take a moderate heaping tablespoon of bacon grease, put it into your cast iron skillet and place it into the oven while you make the cornbread. Get it very, very hot, almost smoking--don’t burn it, and then pour your batter into bacon grease (which will sputter like something being fried) and bake the cornbread. That flavor really is just the best with cornbread, and the crust on the cornbread is like nothing else….crunchy, flavorful and bread with honey and butter.
