That Thing You Do! Director's Cut. Additional Scene - Mr. White has a boy friend

- This is my favorite movie and I just found out there is a director's cut. And I couldn't find scenes anywhere online.
Howie Long was cut from the movie. I'll post the rest of these up later.
This is why talented editors are worth their weight in gold.
This scene demonstrated the reason editors are so important.
@odeerg sloppy, forced acting…especially by Guy.
@odeerg …because it isn’t believable and would have ruined the movie.
@odeerg it's a nice scene, but it's superfluous in that it adds nothing but time to the film. That and a cool E-Type.
@@PMD573 I agree. The scene adds nothing to the movie. Why do we need to know Mr. White is gay? Added for shock value.
@odeerg because it would have ruined the flow of the film....rewatch the movie and as that part comes up...picture that scene....it won't work
Love when Tom winks at Rita. Those two are adorable.
Mia7189 👍👍👍👍😙 Me too!
Well, it is his wife. She's Mrs. David Pumpkins.
David Treadwell-Good for them!
Nut not as tarded as some...
@Daniel Treadwell nothing like a liberal with money and power to piss you people off.
As amusing as it would have been to include a scene revealing that Mr. White had a boy toy in HOWIE LONG, this scene drags on and I can see how it was cut for timing and for not really adding anything to the overall story. The way it was cut in the theatrical release, from flirting at the bar, to the wakeup call is perfect. Leaves the audience as abruptly-awoken and questioning of the evening before, but in too much of a hurry to piece it together, just like Guy.
Perfect example of editing. the scene adds nothing to the narrative (in fact, would distract from it), and the Mr. White character didn't need to be "fleshed out". The character was perfect for the story without introducing anything else. The record company "manager", doing his job, grooming new talent.
A prime example of why editing is so key.
@odeerg it's crap
@odeerg It’s disgusting. 👰🏻♂️👰🏻♂️🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮
I love That Thing You Do! with all my being, but the director's cut is prime evidence of why having a ruthless editor is necessary. It's all fun but it's flabby as hell, and brings a really nice breezy 100-minute film up to 2 and a half hours!
The director's cut is 2 1/2 hours? The extended cut is only 1 hour and 47 minutes.
@@squatch545 Extended cut is 147 minutes, which is three mins shy of 2.5 hours. Theatrical cut is roughly 108 mins.
Your mean
@@lynnettelewis9218 No, he's being honest. The movie is far better without any of the deleted scenes.
@@chuckschillingvideos - I’ve tried watching the extended cut at times, but it really feels “flabby.”
I do prefer the theatrical cut.
every deleted scene in that thing you do is as awkward as this. I was shocked when watching the director's cut how bizarre it was, and it made me appreciate editing way more.
I saw this again for the first time since it was out and didn't realize it was the directors cut, so I chalked it up to forgot parts or the Mandela effect. Lol.
There was much more Charlize tho. Can’t complain about that
I agree. I love this movie and got the directors cut cause I heard it added a lot of story. My wife watched it for the first time with me and I figured I'd try the directors cut and I regretted it. Awkward, cringy, long... It gave Faye and Mr. White a bit more personality but overall the theatrical version is great
I do think Tom Hank's "Oh don't look so sad, Lloyd! We'll be fashionably late" is a little funny
this movie is so underrated but yeah no wonder this scene was cut
I believe that this scene was a nod to Brian Epstein. It didn't work, and they made the right decision to cut it... but it's too bad they couldn't have found a place in the cinema version for that fall! Skitch hit the deck and I fell out laughing. Fabulous job by Tom Everett Scott.
Absolutely nailed it.
This doesn’t feel like the movie
yes, the pace is way off.
One of many reasons why it was cut.
It's likely why this and pretty much most of Charlize Theron's part was cut too. It doesn't really add anything to the movie and ruins the pacing.
Great scene.
That wink from Tom to Rita is the only good part of this scene IMO.
Yeah, this scene is not a director’s cut as much as a director’s mistake
Rita was smokin’ hot!
What day ya mean "was"...she still IS!!!
This is an obvious Brian Epstien reference, glad he cut it because it would be a Beatles movie and not a Wonders movie.
Glad this was Cut...
Lousy scene, definitely forced and over-acted. It's easy to see why it was cut!
Yeah, Howie Long is not known for his acting chops. He starred in one action movie about a fireman fighting forest fires and maybe some bad guys, IDK I never saw the movie. He didn’t get many acting roles afterwards, so it’s safe to say it sucked pretty bad. He was a hell of a defensive end though. I bet sex would get pretty rough with him. Howie could body slam Mr. White into tomorrow. He was a defensive end though, not a “tight end”. Maybe that’s why Mr. White dumped him. He likes his ends tight.
@@RoarOfWolverine that fire movie was not horrible, but not great either. It was entertaining. He also costarred with Travolta in Broken Arrow.
I think it was a subtle reference to Mr. White being gay.
I watched that thing you do on a pirated website online and this scene was included, didn’t even know it was cut
@@darrentaylor9610 subtle?
Discovering during the course of the movie that "Mr. White" was gay added nothing to the story about the brief rise and fall of the "WONDERS ,"so it did not make the final cut as seen in the movie theaters. The movie makers and their screenwriters probably thought it would somehow be cool to have Howie Long appear as Hank's "boyfriend". But the scene ended up on the cutting room floor as did hundreds of thousands feet of film that did not make it into the final movie version.
Thanks for the scene! One of my favorite movies, as well. I think the wake up call in the morning was a better scene for the movie than the rest of this scene would have been.
I don't hate the scene, but I'm glad it was cut from the movie. It's inconsequential to the plot as a whole, and really would have done nothing more but add 5 minutes of "this is here because we want it to be here".
They slightly hinted at it in the first version. In the DC, it works because we know the characters. It's a big reveal!
Rita is a personal favourite. Happy to see the extra footage, thank you for sharing.
Yeah, this scene is not played with the same energy and tone as the rest of the film. There's always a reason something gets cut. But thanks so much for sharing this. This is my favorite movie and I've never seen a deleted scene. (That rhymed...)
Been awhile since I watched the theatrical cut, but I believe Howie is in the beach scene for a brief moment, that's where he and Tom's character meet. As for Tom's character being gay, it's just another play on the Beatles; their manager was gay.
That was director Johnathan Demme.
Epstein was gay. But in the early 1960s, he kept his relationships very discreet. Wouldn't have been gallivanting around town in a convertible w/a boy toy for all the world to see. In the later part of the decade, Epstein was more open about it.
Glad he cut this awful scene.
How is it awful
Glad they didn't include this scene. It doesn't work for the movie.
If you have seen the whole uncut movie it makes total sense
My guess: Tom Hanks intended this as a reference to The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein.
Test audiences however, thought it was a reference to Hanks's earlier role in "Philadelphia."
INteresting.... this is what I just though tnow That I saw for the first time this cut.
Bullseye, it is clearly a reference to Epstein. The entire scene clashes with the general tone of the film and is poorly acted as well; wise decision to cut it.
i thought inmediately brian epstein!!!
I doubt many, if any, of the focus group members ever watched Philadelphia.
Test audiences, however, are f@@kin stupid. i loved this and most of the deleted scenes. It fleshed out the story.
Tom Hanks winking at his wife Hahha
RAch711baby before leaving with his boyfriend 🤣
In the director's cut, during the Playtone montage, the bassist is in bed with the chic from the Chantralenes.
She probably made a man of him.
@@LRS905 Not necessarily "dumbass" as literal.
So, it wasn't the Marines he ran off to then!🤣
Tom Everett Scott even falls like a younger Hanks
Tom Everett Scott is a great actor but he's AWFUL at playing a drunk. Wow, that was bad. Lol
They were on the DVD.
That seems pretty damn good to me. Huh.
Yeah. If I did not know any better, I would have thought that he was drunk.
Been around enough piss drunk people that this is just sorta par for the course.
I Do Believe they did Us, Themselves, & A Perfect Movie a BIG Favor by Leaving This Scene "On The Cutting Room Floor". Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid !
Hard to believe Howie Long played the part of Tom Hanks boyfriend.
Knew Hanks' character was gay when he gives some guy with muscles the once over, in the scene where The Wonders are playing Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters.
It was very subtle.
It's the same character - Howie Long/"Lloyd".

That thing you do was such a good movie AND I MEAN GOOD!,,,,PLEASE CONTINUE
LOLOL xD When he screamed "HOLLYWOOD SHOWCASE!!" and tripped lol xD LOVE IT! xD LOLOL
Ummm, I think he shouted “I am Spartacus”. It’s kind of his thing
Yeah this part of the movie wouldn’t have flowed as well if this would have been kept in. I’m glad Tom cut it.
Rita sold every scene she was in. The subtext between characters was ridiculous!
One of my absolute favorite movies. Of course Hanks is a gem in this as he is in everything, but Tom Everett Scott stole the show.
I just watched it last night.
I always figured hanks character in this movie was gay. The way he noticed Jimmy flirting with Diane Dane at the bar, and knew that Guy had a thing for Faye, only a gay dude would have picked up those subtle inferences in the 50/60s. I've never seen this cut before today, but I'm glad my suspicions were confirmed.
Hanks did a brilliant job with this movie.
I actually thought when Mr. White said the word Chartreuse was a dead give away that he his character is indeed gay.
@@nicolenewsome4863 100%
@@ridetheheckler I mean really how many straight men do you know that even knows what the word Chartreuse means unless they look it up.

I do find it funny, that mischievous smile Long gives when he says, "Bring him along."
Probably if the showcase wasn't the next day, I can't help but feel Mr White would have said, "why not? Guy, hop in!"
One of the best laugh lines in the scene!
Howie Long as Tom Hanks driver in the red car. By the way, Hanks"s wife Rita Wilson is super hot in this movie.
She is such a babe
He wasn’t his driver he was his boyfriend.
Totally understandable why they cut this scene.
I always thought that Tom Hanks was going for a Brian Epstein approach to his character
Thank you for posting this video James.
The Brian Epstein of the wonders
I was thinking the same thing.
@A S
It was the trousers.
They were very tight.
The Oneders...
It is really it is!
I see why this was cut
Wow this scene would have brought the (otherwise perfect) movie to a screeching halt. Great cut
Worth it for the tongue in cheek interplay between Tom and Rita
Tone completely different, Hanks is acting like a different character, oh, and Howie is way to big for that car.
Thank God this never made it in to the final cut. Adds nothing. If you get to watch the full directors cut, a huge number of Tina's (Charlize Theron) scenes were cut as well.
A wise edit as this would have dragged the pacing of this most perfect movie. Not really necessary to have a Brian Epstein angle, we got this is a Beatles-inspired fable.
Wow!! You just displayed you’re “intelligence,” or rather LACK THEREOF 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️ I’m sure you’re still traumatized from when Bryan Singer m*lested you while promising you a role in “X-Men.” You’re pathetic. Please move on 👍🏻
You caught that too with the Beatles manager
@@braunwynd.16 Speaking of lack of intelligence it'll always be "your" not the contraction of "you are". This is grade school knowledge that you do not possess.
@@braunwynd.16 Thin skin much?
It's not Beatle inspired at all, it's about bands like The Knickerbockers, Beau Brummels, The Grass Roots etc being grabbed by major labels out of their garages as soon as they had a local hit, put into matching suits and sent out to pull in as much money as possible while it lasted. Gay managers weren't new with Brian Epstein either, that goes right back to the Rock'n'Roll 50s.
So glad this entire angle was cut from the movie. Totally unnecessary.
This is awkward and clunky. I can see why it was cut.
Well this explains why Howie Long was listed on IMDB. Also I always figured that Guy had spent the entire night with Rita.
Look, a running Jaguar, poor Lane Pryce couldn't get his to start.
Modern editors would have prioritized this scene at all costs.
Yessir
Is that Howie Long playing Lloyd?
Right the first time, my friend - that is the one-and-only Howie Long, alias "The Last Original Oakland Raider".
Yup! He was also in Broken Arrow around the same time.
It’s funny, this scene does kinda fit the movie, but by leaving it out it forced us to use our imagination a little bit more allowing us to better connect with the movie.
That's something far too few filmmakers allow for these days - the capacity of the audience to think for themselves, fill in the dots from their imagination, and generally make the movie-watching experience an individualized one.
This is a nice little extra for people who enjoyed the film, but it wouldn't have worked *IN* the film.
Glad this was cut. For music buffs (which I'm sure there are many out there like me who have seen this movie), this would've been little _too_ obvious of nod to Brian Epstein.
Agree with most here that this lousy scene needed to be cut, but it shows you how hard it is to make a great scene, like the hardware store celebration, for example.
I dont think Spartacus has learned to walk yet!
I saw the director's cut of this movie that left this scene in. It would have been interesting to learn Mr. White had a boyfriend, but this scene really felt like it slowed the movie down.
Tom’s wink to Rita is the only good thing in this scene
I prefer the theatrical release over the directors cut because..."There comes a time in every life when that dream you dream becomes that thing you do!"...who wants to write about another's dreams( director's cut)
Where is Howie Long today ? Tom looked very sharp in this film. Great suits !
You don't watch football, do you?
Tom Hanks cut the scene where his wife was a call girl? Good choice.
I wonder if the Lloyd character in HBOs Entourage was based off this character I know we never saw it in the theaters. Maybe Tom Hanks gave the idea.
This scene would have DESTROYED the entire film.
A wife delivering her husband his boyfriend...that's what I needed
He did Philadelphia perfectly. He is such a great actor
I love this movie and always watch the directors cut.
Thanks. I was looking for this too.
Thanks. What a great scene. A big surprise! Loved the '77 Sunset Strip' cars, with the Corvette in the background. All they needed was a Cobra... The DC gave us some gifts, and took some away - like where Guy was a jazz DJ, instead of a session man.
I also liked the reveal of Ethan's GF.
I have seen this movie dozens of times. I was so confused the first time I saw the DC. The early scenes didn't quite seem right! I never knew there was an alternate movie.
Very heavy scene dealing with themes that need not be explored in this movie that is light and narrowly focused on a limited time span in the 60's. Great move to cut it from the film.
The director's cut is unnecessary, but it's fun to get one that is a legit director's cut and adds more than 5 minutes of random extra footage. Here you have whole sequences, subplots, and longer shots than the original. I always liked the one that shows TB Player waking up next to a Chantrelline before opening the door to see the news about the song charting. In the theatrical cut, we only see him open the door, and it's implied he has a crush on the Chantrelline singer, but that's it. Director's cut? The man closed the deal.
I'd argue the director's cut inches the film slightly closer to PG-13 than the original.
I don't remember there ever being a directors cut or a boyfriend but I do remember watching this scene because the drummer yells and passes out. I definitely remember seeing that
Tom Hanks is pretty brave to cut a scene that his wife was in!
TBH, she was a poor casting choice (the ONLY poor casting choice in the film, in my opinion), and the less of her, the better.
The director's cut isn't terrible. It's just that the theatrical version is better.
Its not usual that I dont like the cut scenes and glad because they explain something else just after. But this one while cute, I see why it doesnt work. The rest of the movie every scene is short and moves as quickly as the band moves up the charts. Tom already told the band about Hollywood showcase on the plane and his character was very influential and confident it just makes sense for the phone call and naturally they would appear. So this scene is fun but rightfully cut in my humble opinion. A little drawn out on the drunk shananigans. Felt more like an inserted physical gag act against all of the witty verbal ones from Leo's character.
@1:42 You can see "Guy" mouthing Tom Hanks when he says "round up your group." I played bass in a pit orchestra for a production of the Sound of Music and the lead male(Von Trapp) did this the ENTIRE show. It was hard not to laugh.
I would just like to know how often ( we have a small idea based on the bar scene) she gets around that even the hotel staff knows who she is.
She the local WHORE
I just realized that his acting is very similar to Jim Carrey
I'm glad they cut this scene
Tom Hanks directed this movie
well Howie starred in a bigger motion picture Broken Arrow as a villain pretty cool scene where his character gets kicked out of a boxcar and plunges 200 feet straight down 2 his death
All I remember about him in that movie is him shaving into the radio.
Good catch -- I'd forgotten about that.
1:32 - "HOLLYWOOD SHOWCASE" makes me crack up EVERY FUCKIN TIME!!!
Lmao. Me too. And apparently Mr. White's boy toy found it funny as well.
This scene is hilarious! I get why it was cut, it doesn’t really add anything to the movie.
It doesn't make sense that Mr. White would know who Margeritte is. I see why they cut this.
Perhaps they both frequent that hotel, or The Blue Spot.
@arabellasmom true. He did.
I didn’t know Mr. White was gay
...and nobody else did either, until this scene surfaced. Glad this was cut from the film. If this movie was made today, it would be front and center.
I took my family to the theater to see this movie. Glad this scene was cut as I would not have liked to explain Mr. White's friend and their banter. My oldest was 10 at the time.
Even in the cut version there was hints of him being gay.
@@mpd9924Hope for their sake none of your kids happened to be gay, with your retrograde attitude...
I AM SPARTACUSH!
Rita Wilson is very hot in the role of the cocktail waitress!
What a face and body!
Bravo Tom Hanks!
Why wasn't this scene in the official DVD release as a deleted scene.
I own the DVD.
This is second, in my all-time favourite "cult movies", to 1968's "Psych Out" starring Susan Strasberg . The film includes Jack Nicholson in the role of "Stoney" and Adam Rourke as "Ben" who are in a Haight Ashbury Psychedelic Rock Combo "Mumblin' Jim".
You know, I always believed one of the highlights in "That Thing You Do" was the band's performance of "Wild One" which reminds me of a group honing their craft àla The Beatles.
Did they film the entire performance of "Wild One".
When I'm feeling down, I play this movie because it takes me back to my youth in the 1960s.
Why would Tom Hanks cut this scene out
Christ, all of the armchair directors here... lol. Thank you all for your brave reviews. Clearly you all belong in Hollywood. When you get there, please remember that extra footage of scenes that didn't make the final cut or in every movie. To all of you sitting there at your computer criticizing this scene, relax. I think Mr Hanks knows what he's doing, and made the best decision possible for the film.
Agree 100%...it's not that it's a BAD scene...it just woukd have dragged down 5he film⁰. Tom made the right choice to cut it.
Great flick, crummy scene...glad this was left on the cutting room floor
I was wondering how Guy got back to the hotel lol
Dear God, that Jaguar.
@snideleywhiplash I agree, that is some Jag. But personally, I'm a big fan of that yellow T-Bird!
I think it was an imposter. It sounded as it drove off like a v8 with an automatic.
@@noisefuljoy Maybe so. I know some Jags had their transmissions swapped for autos, but who knows - it's the movies.

There's a reason deleted scenes are deleted. They suck, just like this one.
