Hi Denise. That must have been cool. I remember that. The camera was inside the washing machine looking up at your faces in a two-shot, as Tom was explaining and trying to sell the washing machine to you. No audible dialog, just the opening music. How many takes?

I'm a HS Band teacher, and one day we were asked to be quiet (Meeting in the room next door). I owned That Thing You Do forever, brought it from home, and played it for three of my classes. They ALL loved it and not only bought it, but bought shirts and started a "movement" in school. What had I done! I enjoyed sitting back and watching the kids love this amazing film.

To hear Tom Everett Scott describe what he learned from Tom Hanks makes so much sense now. A few years ago, I saw Tom Everett Scott at the premiere of one of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies. It debuted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway because they road tripped to Indy in the movie. I saw him walking from their green room building toward the red carpet area, and I screamed "I LOVE THE OH-NEEEEEEDERS!" He turned and waved, then actually waved me over to him. He certainly learned to give the fans what they want. He shook my hand, listened to me gush about that film for a few moments, and took a picture with me. Amazing.

It was shot at the Orange Circle in Orange California and it almost rips me up every time I see it. I’ve gone in that Army Navy store many times and hung out down there in the 60’s. The movie captures the exact feeling of that period of music and style.

I'm a 63 y/o retired musician and I can attest how hard these guys had to work to look like they were a 'band' in such a short time. For me, Ethan Embry looked to be the most comfortable as the bass player and now I know why. Steve and Tom always looked like they were having fun, and I was glad to see at the end of the movie that Jonathan's character stayed in the music biz. This is one of my top 5 all time favorite movies.

    Jonathan, Steve, Ethan, and Tom…
Gentlemen, I'm a classically trained musician who composes, arranges, and also writes popular songs, and I loved all of you in THAT THING YOU DO. You all helped Tom Hanks hold a mirror up to America as he looked back to a musically explosive time when life here seemed simpler, slower, and fonder, if not always better. As an American who grew up during the Beatle era, can I thank you and him enough?
If I could offer a weird suggestion, because I know you had to lip sync for the film and 'act musical' to a prerecorded track, it would be this: For the four of you to reunite sometime, practice up for a while, and then record YOURSELVES doing all the playing and singing on a new studio recording of "That Thing You Do." There's a part of me that wants to hear actors actually get to be full-fledged musicians (witness The Monkees' "Justus"), and such a new recording wouldn't infringe at all now on the vitality of Adam's original recording, plus you could create the record as a posthumous tribute to him. Perhaps Tom Hanks could be persuaded to actually release this 'done by the real guys' new recording on the PlayTone label, which I remember he actually created as a real-life business entity at one time, if it still exists.
Like Tom doing his Forrest Gump shtick for the fans, this would be one of those things actors do not for their serious career advancement, but as a friendly nod for those who appreciate their work and wish them well. And that I do!
Stay healthy and take care, all of you, OK?

24 years ago, my son and I were looking for a movie to go to during a soccer tournament. We chose a Steven Segal movie called 'The Glimmer Man'. After 5 minutes and after Segal's character off'd some guy using a credit card, we were outta there looking for another movie in the multiplex. I saw a poster for 'That Thing You Do' and thought it sounded interesting. 2 hours later, I exited after seeing one of the most fun, engaging movies I've ever watched, and, to this day, that opinion has never changed. My favorite scene has always been their reaction in Guy's father's appliance store after they heard their song on the radio for the first time. The joy they all were experiencing was pure magic.
My guess is I've watch TTYD probably 40 times since then, and it never gets old. My son .....well not so much. Sure great to see all these guys again. Will be watching Friday night.

Imagine if they did a 25 years later retrospective kind of style documentary film. Where their characters talk about what’s happened in the last 25-35 years. Did anyone go to Woodstock or someone opened a car dealership. You know stuff like that. Lots of tongue in cheek fun. Like Mr White is shown talking about them in 1985 and is very blunt about what happened as only he can be an then has since passed away years ago and man, WoW. I think a film like that would put butts in the seats. Then they finish with a Beach Boys style reunion show and just ...yeah.

This was a tragically underrated movie - it encapsulated that time period perfectly and it uniquely showed how a single great song could make a band famous and enduringly memorable - think about all the "one-hit wonder" songs you know. It was perfectly cast from the band to the Patterson family and of course, Tom Hanks as the opportunistic, but fundamentally good music executive. My favorite scene might be in the studio near the end as the band disintegrates, and Hanks says to Thomas Everett Scott's character that their former manager was right about him when he said he was smart; he then quips "Lenny is the clown, Jimmy is the talent, but you are the smart one..."

Well, she had such a small part and ran off with the dentist within the first ten minutes of the movie. I’d like to see the other scenes Jonathan was talking about? Evidently she had a bigger part, it it was trimmed out by the editor. They cut so much of her out of the movie that if she wasn’t so stunningly beautiful, I doubt anyone would remember her because she had almost zero to do with the plot.
If you took all of her scenes that made the final cut out, the story would be the same. Her character had no impact on Guy or Faye or anyone for that matter.
Guy didn’t even seem that crushed that she dumped him for her dentist, but I guess that signing a record deal with a major label and having your song climb the Billboard Chart as you tour America would be quite distracting from a very short romance that didn’t work out. Especially when you were being doted on by Faye while on tour.
