    Great to see the 9F doing what it was designed for. Passenger trains with them on are good to watch but you can't beat them on a heavy freight load! Thanks for the upload! Ken

    The US switcher was the first locomotive bought by Foster Yeoman purely for shunting rakes of loaded hoppers with the works and exchange sidings. It was on these demonstration trains simply to provide air braking (the steamers being vacuum only) and to draw the whole lot back to the start. It was not providing any assistance otherwise and was in effect "dead". I watched these demonstartions and it was obvious when the switcher was working and when it was "dead".

    Oh yes, wouldn't that be great. An S160 and a 9F storming along the GWML with a Mendip Rail stone train.

    the s160 was introduced to the uk after about 1942 to help keep the railways going after lots of stock was lost. there were 400 all together working in the uk.there was also the usa Tank engines too

    I wouldn't under estimate a British shunter, I've seen them with 40-50 hoppers!

    @ronthecyborg - All of the locomotives at merehead were originally ordered from the states. The class 59's that is. I believe ARC and Yeoman ordered 5 and 6 each respectively. So another switcher from the US didnt seem such a bad idea. American trains are after all a hell of alot heavier and longer.

    The ALCO? diesel is there for air braking purposes, unless either steam locomotive has a compatible air brake. At that end of the train it returns the stone wagons to the starting point.
    It was alleged that 5197 has no sanding gear at all or just not gear in working order.
    Not in this video of course, but it is an omission that is hard to understand.
    I hope the matter has been rectified.

    That was just on to provide air braking, I think., and to assist if needed.

    I think it's so it can shunt stone trains around the Merehead site very easily, seeing as it is quite a powerful loco compared to any British shunting loco.

    A lot of steam outings sometimes have a diesel at the back incase of the steam engine failing.

    @21C123 I dunno, a class 08 is pretty powerful, as was the Class 13 (the pair of 08s fused together).

    Fabulous Video. Its what the 9F's were made for. To see it 'on its own' is mind blowing, but to see it with the 160 must have been awesome. Were the ore wagons loaded?

    @ronthecyborg I think the story goes Foster Yeoman (as was) bought the switcher back in the '80s and they were so pleased with it, they went back to GM for some main line locos, and thus the class 59 came about.
    If it wasn't for the 9F in this video, the combination of GM switcher and S160 could almost have been filmed over the pond.

    this is very good, but in china the SY class 2-8-2's have been known to pull 3500 ton coal trains uphill single handedly...
