- Viewed from the high ground above Ropley Stn, Black 5 No.45379 slips on the rails in light rain when departing north. Then Class 08 D3358 leaves the Yard to go to the aid of USA switcher No.30057 which has stalled on the climb into the Station with a suttle service from Alresford. The next trian to arrive is BR 9F 2-10-0 No.92212 shortly followed in the opposite direction by S&DJR 7F 2-8-0 before the 9F departs with multiple wheel-slips, which makes for great viewing, though I doubt the driver enjoys them.
It highlights the enormous power of stea, something I feel can be harnessed much better with modern technology.
great footage. i don't get out much due to work and other commitments so nice to be able to see these trains on this website
None of the wheel slips in this video are anything close to bad. They are all gentle slips that are quickly bought under control by the drivers. As for the stalling, any driver will tell you that “shit happens” and sometimes engines don’t do what they should.
right from my Hornby train set days the 2-10-0 s have always been my favourite. power and grace.
Glorious
Its fascinating when the wheels slip and the engine is still moving slowly
Thanks for you nice comments, glad you enjoyed it.
Ok, yes this is from a female, who knows very little about trains, but still likes to watch, and my one comment is that little 2358 is too cute for words, lol! Sorry, I just had to say it!
Tip: use VLC Media Player to watch it at the correct screen ratio, and not squashed up into 4:3.
WHY did it stall its only got two coaches
Found it very surprising that a 9F was struggling so much to find grip. With10 relatively small driving wheels. Id of thought it would have simply walked that incline. Someone mentioned why not use the sanders. I heard they prefer not to if they can possibly avoid it to prevent excessive wear and tear.
the track might be excessively greasy
a bet that hurt her when she wheel slipped and where is the 3f from?
nice interesting footage.... interesting typed info... cheers ;-)
Thanks, glad you ejoyed it.....it was a good day.
If the rods are at 180 degrees to each other then the loco just will not run. They don't have to be at 90 degrees, 3 cyl steam locos have then at 60 degrees to each other and the Lord Nelson class are at 135 degrees.....
May I use the audio for some of my videos please?
The USA tanks are a powerful machine, ride horribly but then they are VERY short wheelbase for dock shunting.
Great video, this is a prime example of bad driving! fair enough if the rails are wet then you cant always help it but i never see drivers using sanders. thats what they are there for lol
Why was she slipping so much when she only had a REALLY light train?
+streamleazefishhouse Even a light engine can slip if it's starting on a gradient and the rails are really greasy
Yeah, feel free.
what caused it grade or slippy rails
BLACK FIVES ARENT STINKY THINGS
they were built quick for the war and were the best things that stannier made
on 9f they got so much wheelslip because the driver opened the regulator to hard and too fast.
Why the hell does the 9F slip with only 6 coaches, is their track really that bad? Ive seen 4-4-0 schools class repton pull up the bank out of grosmont to goathland on nymr with 8 coaches and no slipping like that
Repton is just too much of a beast :) and to think its a 4-4-0!
James Goodwin yeah reprint is a beast that's for sure, the schools were the most powerful 4-4-0s built in the UK, really they should have been a 4-6-0 to properly apply the power they have
nicholas wright repton has some great vids of wheel slip leaving grosmont to :)
They are on a steep grade and it rained a few minutes ago plus the 9-f's cylinders are very big so you have to be careful with throttle timing because if you fill the cylinders with not enough steam your not going anywhere if you fill the cylinders to fast ( when you hold the throttle open to long )you'll slip if you open and close the throttle repeatedly you will fill the cylinders with just enough steam to get you moving ( and I don't drive steam engines )
Nickel plate road 765 same for black fives and a lot of other steam trains
2 coaches and a steam train
