Some of us buy a 4Runner BECAUSE it's dated. We want tried and true reliability. The killer looks and off-road performance are just an added bonus. In fact, I'm glad I bought the 2019 4R TRD Pro before they started adding silly sensors. Give me a real truck that can go anywhere and I'm happy. But that's just me.
It could be just as reliable with a 6 or 8 speed transmission. Also, it's near the top of the SUV reliability charts but it's not like it's number one. I'm thinking about getting one to replace my Honda Ridgeline but when looking at reliability it's good. Listening to 4runner fanatics it's the most reliable vehicle ever made. It could easily get better cameras, a better screen, and better MPG and not lose reliability. Hopefully the new gen will do just that.
Put a 10 speed trans in it, and you lose its durabillity. Ive never had any issues with my 2011 4 runner hunting gears. As long as it lasts nearly forever im satisfied. Thats why you pay for a 4 runner and tacoma anyways. That long term durabillity is what makes a car worth buying. Being able to reliably start it up for 10 to 15 years with no issues is what makes toyotas so great.
I’ve owned 3 Toyota’s and NEVER had one break down on the side of the road. I’ve never ever been not able to get home. And I’m rough on my cars lol. I’ve had to limp home a few times after having some fun in the snow lol. But they are unbelievably reliable. As nice as some other cars are I don’t think I’ll ever not buy a Toyota
People need to stop complaining about the drivetrain.Its perfected for reliability.When I buy a Toyota I’m buying it because it’s slow as fuck and reliable.I have the same drivetrain in my FJ.Reason why it’s got over 400,000 miles on it.I have other vehicles for going fast
I absolutely love mine. The 4runner has never been better. I love how people think they know better than Toyota engineers when it comes to the engine and transmission. I like the old school touches like the transfer case shifter. My only complaint is the push button start.

They are a business, and that business is doing great by selling a 15 year old platform. If people stopped buying them, that would be a different story. There’s a reason Toyota does this-same reason they sell 36 year old 70 series land cruisers new in Australia. People want them, and no one else seems to be able to build them.
Former 4Runner owner for 14 years. As soon as it gets a more modern engine, like a 3.0 V-6 turbo, and a modern transmission, like an 8 spd auto, would consider another one. As Toyota refuses to update this vehicle beyond cosmetics, and will never happen, I won't own another. Still, proud to own my 2004 for as long as I did (and did much of the maintenance myself that got it through so many years).
I loved my 04 with the V8...she was a beast...I have a 2020 Tacoma now...had a 2nd gen of the TRD Sport 4x4...hopefully they wont do to the 4 runner with that awful pairing of that 3.5L with the tranny shift points...the tacoma without a regear is a gear hunter...(3rd gen) i went ahead and regeared and i love it now but i sure miss the 04's V8.
Tried a hybrid for 6 months and happily returned back to a 4runner (2021 trd off road). Latest vehicles have too many useless expensive gimmicks (advertised as latest technologies). Even my wife was so glad we went back to a 4runner. Get them before they put those lame hybrids/electric motors in them. The novelty of hybrid/electric system easily wear off.
Nice job. Never get tired of watching reviews on 4R TRD Pro. I've seen so many videos I ordered a Lunar Rock 3 months ago and still no word from the factory. It doesn't matter to me that it's 270 hp / 5 speed... it's the last of its breed. The 6Gen 4R could be sporting a hybrid engine, not a big fan. In any case, this truck is a keeper (full discloser I'm ordering a Bronco WildTrak just for nostalgia 😁) and maybe, just maybe I'll get a SuperCharger. 👍
I gotta be honest, I’ve been pining away for another 4Runner since my kids (and dogs and their friends and stuff) forced the sale of my shrinking ‘92. Been telling myself for almost two decades that at the first opportunity, I’d ‘downsize’ to another 4Runner. Driving the 2022 TRD Pro had enough of a nostalgic, utilitarian feel, with just enough modern amenities… I was sold instantly. It really takes me back (and hopefully back up into some Washington wilderness). The fact that Toyota is going smaller, lighter, small displacement turbo made the decision even easier. Waiting for my 2022 to arrive in the 1st quarter of 2023 (thanks COVID). But definitely excited to get back into a modern classic.
At least I give him credit he didn't say one of the the most annoying things which is 4 x 4, because there is no such thing. But he's ridiculous saying it needs 500HP.
I already have one of these in this year and spec. I love it. It’s awesome at what it’s intended for and keeps my 2020 MX-5 RF GT 6MT out of the snow. Just here to see what you think of it. Glad to see you love it too!
Great review Brian. I have a 17 SR5 that I daily. I’ve been thinking about upgrading to the TRD Pro, but they are so hard to come by right now. I may have to wait and buy the 22 Model Year when it’s finally available. I’ve owned 2 generations of 4Runners and they’ve always been solid vehicles. I do wish Toyota would put the V8 back in this truck and give me an 8 speed transmission. Then it would be perfection.
Just bought my custom 2021 TRD ORP with black out rims and inlays two days ago….took a month to get. I feel that you tubers are over stating the body roll and nose diving…..my first ever 4Runner and I’m in love.
Great review as usual, Brian. I think we all feel the same way about the drivetrain... But it's nice to know it'll get you thru hell and back and you'll still be able to pass it on to your kids. I do appreciate that about Toyota's, knowing they will not end up in a landfill after only 10 years. I'm curious tho, have you driven a TRD off road w the KDSS? I've heard it's better at daily driving and slow off roading as the pro is better tuned to handle high speeds.
@@BrianMakse Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. It's a super cool hydraulic sway bar set up. Apparently it gives you great on road handling and dope ass articulation off road.
I've owned my Gen-3 4Runner for twenty years, now. It has been fantastically reliable. I love it, and have kept it in great running and cosmetic shape. That said, it's a truck, and to suggest that everyone should own one is... unrealistic.

Doesn't make sense for Toyota to put a V8 in it. That's what the Sequoia is for. It would eat into their sales. Same reason the RAV4 will never see a V6.
I think the problem is that the sequoia, the land cruiser, and the tundra all have v8's so if they released a 4runner with a v8, I feel as if sales will go down for the sequoia and land cruiser.

How do you like the sr5? Is that the premium? I'm trading in my Toyota Tacoma for a 2019 SR5 premium, it doesn't have the locking differential, but I don't really care about that
I have these running boards on my TRO, they are really good looking and useful however if you planning on doing off roading, these don't substitute rock sliders, they are just not that tough.
Would the part time 4x4 be better then the AWD limited? I’m not sure what would be much better for someone who just drives in roads and maybe once or twice goes to dirt road.
Try a Lexus GX460. It's a Landcruiser Prado in full trim. The 4runner is great, but it's purely an American marketing tactic. The world gets the Landcruiser Prado... aka the Lexus gx460... you'll love it!

Add the v8 and new tranny and the top trim will be more than the GX. Of course Lexus would have to add the more powerful v8 and tranny to go with it and then the GX would price itself out of its segment.

Feel free to give them a call, from what they told me they have a couple night shade editions coming in august as well. They are a pretty good dealership, they usually track down what you want.

Great at what it does, but $30k too much. With tax in Canada this Truck is over $70k. With a black hole of plastic interior and fake leather seats it is a joke for that kind of money. You are in GX460 range at this price. Toyota needs to do a much better job with interiors for the 6th gen 4Runner. If you have ever sat in a RAV4 Trail you know what you are missing.
Absolutely no good reason to ever buy a Pro unless you just so happen to like to spend $10k more for a color. All of the crap they put on a Pro you’re just going to rip off and replace with a lift and more off-road capable parts so why waste the money?

At 6:28: Pro is not all wheel drive. It’s 2wd, 4hi, and 4LO. Limited is only model with all wheel drive.

I’ve worked with a lot of off-road shops and the stories of guys coming in all proud of their Pros only to learn that they wasted $10k on stuff getting stripped off to truly do anything off-road are legendary.

This 4Runner feels 20 year old car specialy from inside, outside looks good and modern but inside is way too old.
It’s a truck, mate. Not a soft, car-based crossover.
This was my dream truck for a long time. But now the Bronco exists!
