First Time We Saw Our Land

  • 8 months ago, myself, my wife and our 5 kids, left our family, friends and a city of about 3.5 million people for a small town of 5000 people. We traveled 800 miles to a rental home we had only seen pictures of to begin our new life. We are currently pursuing the perfect piece of property to make the homestead. We have 4 months left on our lease. We intend to produce videos of the process of building and ultimately severing the umbilical to the power grid as well as exploring this lifestyle that so many from our past lived without question. I followed your strategy in 2002 when leaving the Boston area (Milton) and moving to rural central Maine. I made a number of trips to the area I was interested in and looked for "deals". I finally found a bank repossessed property and got a steep discount. 3 bdrm ranch and 40 x 40 garage that needed lots of work. But I bought it for cash and I am mortgage free.

You are correct about the size of the town. I grew up in a small town in NEW JERSEY (there were and there are some small towns in NJ) with 1,100 souls. My class was the largest ever in the school system with 68 students. We were all buddies and friends. When I started high school we moved to a town of 23,000! That was good for me in that each of my teachers of a major course had a Phd. in the subject they taught. I left home at 17 with a scholarship to study languages in Germany. A perfect fit for me - I lived in a town of less than 1,000; my class was about 40. What a sense of community! Now after 15 towns, five states and two countries I live on 1/10 acre with a 75 acre lake across the street. This is a multi-generational community and I am following my family roots. At 73, it is a joy to open the back door in warm weather and hear the laughter and yelling of young children just being kids. Gone is the transient yuppie town we lived in for 27 years.

I am off Horne south of Lehi. It was by Providence and love that have mountains to look at, was great driving north to get onto the 202 to go to ASU. Then I drive home through the res and unwind with the beautiful scenery and open space. So totally agree about having a view of the mountains, but if have to move to Texas there be none, but there will be family which is of course more important. Just enjoying the uncertainty and life in general.
