      @@SteubeMan Define "ease of use"? Because none of us emerged from the womb knowing how to use a Windows machine either. So I suggest you think back to your earliest memories of when you first used Windows, work out how long it took you to get familiar with it, and then ask yourself what would happen if you then invested that same time in learning to drive Linux. Only in that way can you make a fair comparison about "ease of use".
      Just for the record, (Gentoo) Linux has been my main OS since 2003 and desktop share of Linux hasn't changed much in that time - but whether it's 2% or 92% desktop share, I don't think I'd be using it any differently anyway. If something has to be "popular" before you will consider using it, then you've the wrong mindset for Linux and should probably stay away from it.
      Nobody gets any money if and when SteubeMan first installs Linux, so why should those of us already using it have any cares about desktop share anyway? It's just a completely irrelevant statistic to those of us who use it on the desktop.

    OK, so let's just say that this argument is rock solid and sideloading is bad for security, and Apple should only allow apps to be installed from their app stores. Then what about MacOS? You can't tell me that people don't store equally sensitive information on them, yet they allow apps to be sideloaded fairly easily. They put Windows on that pie chart, but oddly, MacOS was missing. If Apple is so sure about this claim, then where is that data point?

      this is a good point, but for some reason I can't help feeling that there's something different about smartphones compared to computers. when I think of a phone, i think of being very easily tracked, physical location being a huge part of that, whereas computers are much less available to tracking. there's more to it, but i'd wager that, for the average person, more personal info is on a phone than a PC. Personally, I own both PC and Mac, and I tend to use the Mac for more personal stuff i want to keep secure, and the PC for gaming and entertainment. Admittedly, my opsec isn't the best, but I do what I can with the patience I have. as for my phone, i don't download shit, i use an iphone, i don't want anything tracking me except apple, because if i have to choose the lesser of 2 evils, it's apple over google any day.

      They are actually trying to prevent "side loading" on MacOS as well by making it relatively complicated to install any software that's not verified and signed by Apple. Nowadays, you can only install unsigned software by disabling signing with the terminal.
      It's quite cumbersome for me, actually, because I work at a university and my faculty mostly uses Macs (which I hate, but I can't do anything about it). The software used by our university for internal management (distributing materials to the students, giving grades and assignments, communicating with colleagues, holding lectures) doesn't have an official Mac version, but as it's open source, I ported it over from the Linux version. When MacOS allowed for unsigned installation easily, I was able to just distribute the packed installer I made and all faculty members were able to install it themselves with relative ease. Nowadays, I have to install it on every new Mac we get myself, because I first have to disable software signing. At a faculty with more than 500 people using Macs, that's really, really annoying. I have unironically thought about just buying a developer account from Apple to sign my software just so that I save that hassle. Even though it's completely pointless because the software is only used by people of our university anyways. But I won't give them that satisfaction.

      Yeah indeed. So stupid... As a parent you oviously need to watch the device of your kid, lock it down and disallow app installs without a password. Then educate the kid so someday your kid will be able to handle the full resposibility of a phone and be a "admin" that can keep the phone save.
      There isnt that much to learn in order to be able to distinguish bad apps from properly good ones if you get to know how the OS works. Android Permissions help a lot to tell what the app really may do to your device and the ability to check if a source is trustworthy or not is even more useful.
      I think this is where the big problem really comes down to. Many parents just give their kids a phone without watching it or making sure the kid stay save. So the kids have to somehow figure that out by themselves. With trail and error they may lose data, money and cause problems over social media apps in order to get that knowledge somehow.

    The fact that apple did this, is proof we need side loading even more. They're anti-trust laws, because we can't trust apple to be honest.
    Apple could have taken it very differently. Taking their pie chart they could have shown, "look at how poorly android handles side loading. We're going to introduce sideloading but we're going to make it so we keep our percentage of exploits and vulnerabilities low. Take that google!" And considering apple controls all iphone's defaults, unlike google, they're able to much more reliably tailor the experience. Its very likely that installing 3rd party apps on iphone would be like installing them on mac, where after side loading is enabled, every 3rd party apps on first opening will warn "hey, this isn't signed by apple" and close. Then you have to go to settings, click yes I want to open this app actually.

    A "middle of the road" solution would be to make sideloading a somewhat hard feature to activate that only an experienced user that knows what he's doing would be able to enable and a normal user wouldn't even come across it. For example, to unlock the bootloader of Motorola phones you have to find a key in fastboot, send it to Lenovo and they will send you back another key to unlock it. It's a hassle to do but it's not that hard, and most importantly not straight up locked forever. If Apple wanted to allow sideloading they could make a similar approach, but all they really want is their AppStore monopoly.

    • @goeiecool9999
      @goeiecool9999 2 роки тому +11

      The approach you're describing with Lenovo is actually still terrible. Huawei did the same thing but later stopped providing the keys. There are a few firms who claim to have reverse engineered the cryptography, but they charge money for their services. Now realistically I'm stuck with a device with a locked bootloader forever. It's still too big of an overreach on the manufacturer's part.

      How about:
      Setting to enter developer mode
      Has a warning saying that you shouldn't do this unless you know what you're doing
      Enter password and whatnot
      In it you get access to:
      * Install external apps ("sideload")
      * User-mode terminal
      * Root-mode terminal (requires password again)
      * Unlocking the bootloader
      * etc.

    In IOS you're locked in your house and can only receive supplements by a hole in the ground in witch Apple will decide what can pass through it, and with a 30% cut.

    How come AltStore never comes up in discussions like this? It's an app that literally allows sideloading on iOS _right now_, by abusing Apple's developer certificate system. Yes, it's a bit cumbersome, requiring the phone to regularly contact a desktop or a laptop to refresh the certificates, but it works.
    As an argument, it can work either way; Apple may ignore the problem since there's "already a solution", or they may feel the need to "fix the vulnerability" and stop issuing free developer certificates - but on the other hand it can be used as a "stop pretending it's impossible, just allow it officially" kind of argument. I just feel that this is a weirdly little-known fact.

    I would like to add something not covered in this video: In many countries including "democratic ones", the government forces you to install one or more of their apps. Example: during "the dark ages", in uk you HAD to have the NHS app to show your vaccinations when you went into restaurants, fast foods, or travelled abroad. Nowadays, if the govt investigates you, makes you sign a form to allow them to check your bank statement. If you refuse, they will find you guilty of covering up, and there's no other way to exonerate yourself. I imagine in the future forcing you to use an app to monitor you openly if you make a wrong step.
