    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured on real hardware.
    2. Arcade footage uses MAME.
    3. I still consider this the best home version of this game.
    4. Opening monologue music is from Marvel Super Heroes. Closing monologue music is from Street Fighter Zero 3.
    5. Bernie Stolar did not kill the Saturn, but he definitely fucked over the people that supported it.
    6. I always felt the Saturn could have done a great version of Marvel vs. Capcom.

This game was one of the reasons why I loved my Sega Saturn when it came out. I remember everyone would come over to my place after school to play since I was the only kid in my neighborhood to have a Saturn and this game with a 4MB Action Replay. So much nostalgia with this game and so many memories. Thanks for bringing up how broken this game is which is on another level of fun for those who know how to do those type of inputs.

I remember getting my Saturn modded way back when just so I can play this game. It was so incredible, like owning the arcade game at home. It was a lot of money at the time, but Marvel Super Heroes vs. SF, Pocket Fighter, and Vampire Savior after that made it totally worth it. The Saturn was THE system for Capcom fighting games late in its life.

I already had a modded Saturn for other games (particularly Shining Force), because almost none of the good games came to the US. This is one of the ones I imported though. I still have my fairly sizeable stack of Saturn imports. I don't have any real way to hook the system up right now (without further mods) because my A/V setup is digital-only now, HDMI/Displayport only, doesn't even support analog audio. I know I could use a converter box, but that introduces analog noise and generally makes it look like garbage on a 1080p monitor. The only really coveted Saturn game that I was never able to import (due to cost) was Radiant Silvergun. Fortunately these days it's super easy to emulate. I wish Treasure would just go ahead and release it on the Switch, they've re-released Ikaruga about 100 times, how hard can it be?

X-Men vs. Street Fighter is one of those games you just vividly remember seeing and experiencing for the first time ever. Man if I had known how easy it was to play import games on a Saturn in the late 90's AND that some retailers actually sold the game domestically (never knew this until now) I would have easily spent my saved up allowance money on a Saturn instead of a PlayStation.

It's so funny because it was a two-edged sword. I grew up with a Saturn and I was aware of the import games, Blockbuster Games carried a lot of them and you can barely find info on Google about those game stores anymore. I had things like this game and Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter, Groove on Fight and lots of others but I missed out on games like Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider 2 and 3, Resident Evil 2 and 3 (didn't play those until the Dreamcast) Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, Tekken, Parasite Eve and countless others that are either still being made or are considered classics. It was a really weird console exclusive era for sure.

Thanks Sega Lord X for another informative, in depth video, reviewing my favorite 2D fighter on the Saturn and one of the reasons I got the system. I recall fondly the excitement when UPS delivered the game & 4M RAM card; I played it all day and called off work the next day to play it with a friend non-stop! The 1st "arcade perfect" or better than(IMHO) home conversion I remember, Fun fact: in the settings, after beating the game, you could increase or decrease the speed, improve the sound (clearer effects) and even have 4 Juggernauts duking it out! What an amazing upgrade the extra 4 mb of RAM made!
I can't help but wonder how it could've help Sega if it could've been used to improve 3D games as well (improve framerates, eliminate slowdown, loading, etc.) and came out earlier, in the US too!
Oh what could have been and if Sega hadn't focused time, effort and money on the Sega CD and 32X, but that's a whole other topic.

@@mattb6522 Definitely memory issues for the PS1. It already had a tad less memory than the Saturn, and memory was the biggest limiting factor for both machines in their time. Tag fighters, especially were tough for PS1. Traditional one-on-one fighters PS1 could do pretty well. As for Saturn, I wonder how much memory they would have needed to port Street Fighter 3. The Saturn is more powerful than the CPS3 hardware, so it would come down to memory unless I'm missing something. Oh well.

1:11 I agree. That was the main reason I got a Saturn. I was visiting my cousins in Florida, and they were playing Street Fighter Alpha on their PlayStation, but the controller was just like the SNES controller, and I didn't like it for fighting games at the time. I eventually got used to it when I had no choice, but the Saturn ports of my favorite Street Fighter series were nigh pixel perfect, save for the loading times. Alpha 2 unfortunately suffered from sound compression, making some sound effects sound muffled. When I heard about X-Men vs Street Fighter for the Saturn, I wanted very badly to get my hands on it, but the price to import that game, plus the ram cart, was _astronomical_ for a middle-schooler like me! It probably costs even more now!

2D fighters were my main reason for buying Saturn. I'm mainly a "Nintendo guy," but Saturn is a great console. It's now in my top 3 fav consoles (together with SNES/SFC and GameCube). Saturn has a good build quality and robust design, like quickly replacing the battery for RTC(and memory)... GameCube in next-generation has battery soldered to the board, which is poor. Great companion for mostly 3D games on N64 :)

The home port of X-Men vs Street Fighter is low key one of the most important home console games of the 90’s. On the surface, it seems like it’s just another great fighting game on the Saturn, but it’s actually more than that. It was the first instance of a arcade port matching the arcade feel in every way. It was an absolute achievement as it was a 100% replica of almost having the arcade machine in your home and the first sign that the home consoles would overtake the arcade. As someone who lived during that period, this was one of the most desired games as it was covered in every game magazine.

I bought an import copy of X-MEN vs. Street Fighter for Saturn back in the day. That game rules. Can't count how many matches my college roommate and I played during that time.

Honestly, I don't even like fighting games very much but I'm watching this because I just love listening to you talk about Sega and retro gaming. Hearing someone who was an active gamer and Sega supporter back during that era is fascinating. I was just a kid during the early days of the Saturn and while I had my trusty Mega Drive growing up and access to my cousin's SNES occasionally, the 5th Generation was this mysterious thing that I only got to see snippets of. I remember reading the very few video game magazines that I had access to over and over and looking at the screenshots from Saturn and PlayStation games in awe. I wanted a Mega-CD, since a Saturn was definitely out of reach, but never got one. I'm glad now since it wasn't anywhere close to what I'd built up in my head.
Eventually I got to play several PlayStation games at various friends houses and even a Nintendo 64 at a family friend's. I had my own save on Mario 64 and quickly got more Stars during my sporadic visits than they had while living with the thing. Eventually got my own N64 in 2000, although I wanted a Dreamcast more than ANYTHING but they were much more expensive. I thought the Dreamcast was the coolest thing ever but I never actually saw one in real life until much later when I started collecting Sega consoles.
Anyway, I could ramble for ages about my own history with old video games but I won't cos no one cares. But I thought I'd let you know that I just really enjoy your content - even the stuff that I'm not normally interested in, getting your perspective on it is fascinating.

At the time I was "Look at that shit! A cartridge and CD working together!" Would have never guessed that would have ever happened. Began to blow my paychecks at the time for other games that used the carts. Grateful to still have them all to this day.

I graduated catholic school in 1998 and got more money than ever before. A lot of it was dumped into buying this game, a 4-in-1 cart and Dragon Ball Z: The Great Dragon Ball Legend from EB in the mall. Zero regrets - this game is still an all-time favorite.

I own the Saturn version of the game, the only issue I had with it is the CPU never mixes up the teams each time you play. Certain characters will always be paired up with the same characters, time and time again.

The game is still one of my all time favorite games; I played this religiously backintheday and when I wasnt playing it, I was listening to music in my cdplayer (which Im surprised I didn't ruin it doing that)
Also, I didnt know stores in the US sold Japanese import games. I had to buy the 4ram cartridge, the import reader cartridge and this game (as well as marvel vs streetfighter, pocket fighters and vampire saviour) from Japan - CDJapan to be exact. In fact I believe xmen vs streetfighter was the first imoprt game I bought from them

Yep, I worked at Babbages back then and was also shocked when we got notice that we would carry the imported games. Needless to say, many of us jumped on it when they arrived. We even took in the used imports and I was able to get a few games that way, like Vampire Savior. That was a great time to work there for sure.

With an ODE I can now play this as much as I want just like I wanted to as a kid (I'm not that good at it).
I'm guessing an MSHvSF review will be coming at some point too.

It was the best of both worlds and I had that, great times man.
