    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured from real Saturn hardware via RGB.
    2. Arcade clips from MAME.
    3. There was a PC version of this as well. I've never seen it, though.
    4. Modern releases like the SF 30th Anniversary Collection have the emulated arcade version. It's on the PC, Switch, PS4 and Xbox One.
    5. This was a game steeped in controversy at its release. GameFan magazine released reviews claiming the Saturn version was inferior due to it not having blue shadows like the arcade. The thing was that the blue shadows were there the entire time. When you switched between the original and remixed soundtracks, it also switched between the original and remixed shadows. Further, the Saturn sound effects recreated the arcades sound effects nearly spot on, while the Playstation sound effects were resampled at a higher rate. This was held against the Saturn as well, despite the reviewers claiming "arcade perfection" as being the criteria for the better scores. It was a shit show plain and simple, and GameFan never admitted that they were just wrong no matter the bullshit excuse.
    6. In the unmarked comparisons, the Saturn version is on the left, arcade on the right.

All we talked about back then was 3D graphics and polygons. 2D was old and going away forever. Damn were we wrong. What we got were beautiful 2D sprites that age like a fine wine. Absolutely gorgeous to this day and will never go out of style.

They aged like wine but did get old after awhile because they put these sprites in with newer different looking sprites in other games like CvS 2.

I'll never forget the initial feeling I got as a 11 year old playing Street Fighter Alpha for the first time at a friends house and realizing Final Fight and Street Fighter shared the same universe. Seeing Cody and Haggar in the background of Street Fighter Alpha 2 just blew my mind lol. The whole shared universe thing was new to me back then.

It was new to us in the west. But the universe was always meant to be shared between Final Fight and street Fighter. You could see that in Final fight with Smashing the car in the bonus stages and cage fights to a lot of the bosses. But Final Fight was originally going to be called Street Fighter 89.

I love the alpha series, in my opinion it is the best over the numeric entries in the 90s, if Capcom released an alpha 4 in the PS2, and Xbox instead of fighting evolution with SFIII like alpha sprites, added the parry and instead of the isms it featured a Street fighter EX2 like super gauge it would have kept the franchise alive

This game was just awesome when it came out, one of the biggest stylistic leaps in gaming I can remember. Bengus was probably the best anime-style character artist in the world at that point, and it's unbelievable how faithfully they were able to bring his art style over to a 384x224 screen. Great review.
It always struck me as ironic that Capcom spent 4 years upgrading SF2 and when they FINALLY got to a sequel of sorts it felt rushed-- too few characters and stages. That said, the extra year made all the difference as Alpha 2 is the GOAT

That was one Awesome Review!!! Big THX to our Lord the Sega Guru and a Legend on UA-cam!!!
SFII is my Favourite but only to the fact that it was the first one. Zero or Alpha is my Nr.1 SF to Fight it is nearly perfect! I love it

SFA was the game that got me to love an appreciate fighting games, i mean yeah i played sf2 at the arcade, on a friends SNES or at the local market that had a cab of sf2ce, but i ended up borrowing the ps1 version of SFA from a friend who later gave it to me, and apart from the long load times, i never really noticed the missing animation frames, it had a freaking training mode... and if you popped the game disc in a cd player you could hear all the game tracks, original and remixed, that made me appreciate ost's way more... it still was a great experience and it got me to appreciate the franchise even more, and even to this day ill load up mame and play some SFA...

The best versions of the Street Fighter Alpha series games that I highly recommend are:
    1. Street Fighter Alpha 1 (Sega Saturn).
    2. Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold (Sega Saturn).
And 3. Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max (Sony PSP).

I remember being huge into SF2 from the time it hit arcades til Super came out on SNES but I didnt touch the Alpha series til the early 2000s. Once I started delving deep into them, courtesy of the bargin bins at Gamestop, I feel in love. Definitely was a great evolution of the genre.

First saw Street Fighter Alpha as a kid in the arcades. Wouldn't get to play it until years later as a teenager.
Based on the comparison video, it would've been pretty hard to detect the difference between the two versions on an analog signal monitor unless you were looking for them specifically.

My first Street Fighter Alpha experience was with the PS-X version. I did eventually play the SEGA Saturn version a few years later, and I personally like the Saturn version alot better.

even though i'm from the uk, even i heard about the infamous Nick Rox Gamefan review. where he marked the Saturn down from the Playstation version for its shadows and remixed music. surprised this wasn't mentioned in the video.

This was the first proper Street Fighter game on the Saturn, sure Street Fighter the Movie came out before it and I bought and played that for a while, when Alpha appeared Street Fighter the Movie never graced my Saturn again.

The Alpha series are great, being Alpha 2 my fave Street Fighter ever, but this one really felt like a cool step forward from Street Fighter II at the time, very refreshing with the change in art style, the kinda new gameplay and (in my opinion) the very refreshing roster of fighters, bringing new characters but keeping it in the right numbers, I preffer less characters with more personality than an overwhelming selection screen, this also allows you to fight against the rest of the fighters like the original SFII, I think this game made a good choice in that aspect. Of course Alpha 2 made everything in this game better, but this is still one hell of a game, specially the home ports, as you mention, it was arcade perfect, and that meant a lot at the time.

I was fine with the roster. I'm super glad they didnt' stuff this with a bunch of sf2 characters. It was supposed to be newer and different so the roster was fine with me. Gave the newer characters more of a chance to shine.

I feel like the only person on the planet that loves this more than part 2. I think part 3 trumps them all, but the glorious simplicity of this one is fantastic. Yeah, the backgrounds are blah, but the music is some of Capcom’s best.

I had played Street Fighter Alpha in the Arcade so I couldn't wait to get my copy of it home finally a new version of the game that wasn't just an update to Street Fighter 2.
Capcom and Sega Arcade ports were the reason why the Sega Saturn was my console of choice that generation.

I just remember trading away basically my SNES collection at EBs to get Alpha. And I still owed like $30 on the balance.
