- Anxiety is pervasive in the world today. All of us including me know what it’s like to be anxious. We have all read recent articles about how the COVID-19 pandemic increased anxiety around the world, and this has placed a lot of focus on anxiety as a psychiatric diagnosis. Anxiety in my opinion is not an independent disease the way the diagnostic and statistical manual (DSM) would lead you to believe. Anxiety is a symptom that has various potential causes and that’s what we are here to talk about today.

Maybe we as a society are just more aware of our anxiety because our ancestors were too busy farming turnips and dying of tuberculosis to complain about their own anxiety, even though they didn't really have any less then than we do now.
Also, cognitive demands are far higher today for survival so excessive anxiety is more detrimental even if it’s the same level or less than our ancestors had.
I agree with this video. A lot of professionals are clueless about (hypo)mania- its not always mad cash spending & hospitalization. That dysphoric mania is something else 4real.
I agree. I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and also had serious anxiety. I have been treated for both for over 40 years. They are twins.
Lots of overlap between the diagnosis and the treatments are the exact same which says something about the situation as well. GAD was created in DSM III it's not a very scientific diagnosis and many of the symptoms may be better explained by the depression spectrum. See my most recent videos I covered exactly what you are talking about
Cortisol responsible for anxiety and depression in a vulnerable individual
Love your videos !!!!
Well Well, A midnight upload.
Great Work Doc ;)
Interesting, informative and well balanced video. I always assumed GAD was a combination of multiple types of anxiety when one wasn't predominant over another and maybe layered over underlying depression. Either MDD or what used to be referred to as dysthymia disorder.
very interesting theory
Thank you Dr for your wonderful content. I was diagnosed with GAD 3 years ago at age 50. My Dr wants me to try Buspirone. She says the side effects are very mild with no tolerance or withdrawl.
Do you think Buspirone is a good first choice to try and get some relief?
God Bless you
Hi Dr Rossi Very good and informative stuff!!!! I have had GAD for 4 decades now mostly managed by Paxil Ativan and supplements, good diet, exercise etc etc. I'm really interested in LDN Naltrexone for something to try for 6 months or so. Am I wrong to ask my doctor about this? Thanks Mark
Did you get weight on Paxil? This was prescribed to me but I just won’t put up with weight gain
@@wulfsorenson8859 Hi yes I did gain about 10 pounds but put up with it because paxil worked for me.
@Mark Buckley one day the med just might stop workinh... good luck
What is effective then for OCD with GAD ?
Can you please do a video about fluoxetine olanzapine combination?
As someone with anxiety that I’m not able to identify, I’ve noticed that anxiety doesn’t just stick around all the time, although it may seem like it. It’s hard to look past the points where you aren’t actually feeling anxiety because you’re not feeling anything so it’s easy to forget about it. What I’ve noticed is that there are every day activities that can trigger that. For me it’s when I’m getting ready to eat, when getting ready to eat, when I think about my finances. This all started a couple years ago when I smoked weed one time a few weeks after I had an acid trip. I had a panic attack about reality and began to dissociate. When the anxiety is triggered, it’s never about anything in particular, but mortality and the state of nature are two common themes when my anxiety is triggered. Part of me believes that as humans we’ve needed to have a level of anxiety for evolutionary purposes, and as those natural threats start dwindling, we’re still left with natural instinct to get anxious. Personally, I’ve found that benzos help relieve the anxiety, but it never helps me get to the root cause of it. I think we’re at a point now where we need to calm down on giving so much profit to big pharma and actually breaking down our problems in ways that we can handle
