simpler times indeed. In those times we didn’t have to worry about sexism, homophobia, racism, human trafficking we were kids, now we have to think about those things and fight against injustice.

These women don't even look that fat after you've finished watching 'My 600lb life'.

I don’t know the answers to this, but it’s so painful to watch these beautiful, smart women obsessed with feelings of shame and feeling less than surrounding their weight. Those three women deserve to love themselves and want to be their best self. Is this kind of programming inspiring or is it slightly toxic ? I just wonder what the world would be like if we just abstained from talking about and judging other people’s bodies...but also these conversations de stigmatizes the shame around body image issues. It also makes me feel sad to recall how obsessed we all were as a society (are?) with Oprah’s weight. I can’t imagine what that felt/feels like for her. Does it humanize her? Does it diminish her contributions as a great teacher of this generation? Like I said, I don’t have any answers, but I have deep feelings about the way we talk about weight and the human experience.

You have a good point. I like how Oprah mentioned that Bob's was a was a good program IF that is what we choose to do. For me, I needed to first love and accept myself. Then I realized that I was overeating because I didn't know how else to take care of myself, so I am gradually finding other ways to care for myself.

I think I really liked Bobs perspective on this, noting that the weight is only a symptom and pushing people to be conscious about their decisions and think about why they are doing things. I think this can be applied to a lot of different areas of life. We do so many things unconsciously even though we are hurting ourselves.

I'm 176 but I don't feel ashamed of my weight I know I need to lose some to be healthier but I don't want to be ashamed of my body,
It's so sad to watch these women go through that, the weight culture is just so toxic

I do feel the same way. As someone whose dealt with the weight issues since my pre teens and coming from a family with "Big" people ; I have learned to be happy and healthy within my own shape and size.... I find these kind of the programs can carry both pros and cons.... and if one is not self aware things can end up being very toxic !!!

My insight here is sometimes we keep eating to compensate what we are feeling inside. I am not satified, i keep eating and looking for more because it is my coping mechanism of a certain issue, good thing i don't grow bigger. I am being enlightened that i am experiencing stress eating.

You’re right that her kid was told that word and how to apply it by someone, but my 5 year old noticed how people who were significantly larger than most looked different long before she had a word to go with it. That’s like saying they don’t see color. Children are excellent at studying same vs different in all parts of life, so it’s very possible that he would have noticed even without having a vocabulary to label what he noticed.
