Already I see the focus being on these young girls who have experienced trauma instead of on the older MEN grooming them, impregnating them, and abandoning them. So sick of this narrative. The majority of teen pregnancies are fathered by men over 20. There's a whole other issue there we're not looking at.
What worried me was Latonya when she said they are there when you need them. Babies love you but they need you more than you need them. They aren’t able to give so young. I feel sorry for her and other girls who think a baby will fill the void they need for love or companionship.

Why don’t the boys have to spend the night with fake babies as well? They both need the revelation. Also, I think a more effective approach would be paring youth with an actual teen mom to help them get a real experience!
Yesss!!!! I was thinking the same thing!!! And have the girls AND boys do the class! Have them " grocery" shop and buy baby clothes. THAT would be even more effective!
They do in our high school, but they didn't have this program when I was stupid and making decisions that led me to getting knocked up by a sociopath at 19. :)
Because the reality is that the boys can bounce. However, if the narrative changed and they did require the boys to do this exercise it may change the outcome in the future.
There's a misconception that you can't get pregnant for a certain amount of time after giving birth. I can't imagine not just being pregnant that young, but having yet another kid when you weren't even ready for the first one!
If your prevention fails, you aren't trying. I know so many babys born despite the pill. Just dont judge bevor you know all facts. And even then, just don't judge you have never lived a single day of anyone elses life.

So many come from broken homes, so the thought of the baby as "someone that will love me forever" is all too common. Butt anyone who is a parent knows that while babies bring joy, they take a LOT out of you and bring responsibilities that these girls cant even fathom yet. A screaming infant isn't "there for you", especoally at 3 am when you haven't slept in days, you are there for the screaming infant. While babies do bring love and joy, having a baby shouldn't be about what the baby can give you, thats a recipe for disaster.
Do what other developed nations do: teach them about protection, give them free contraception and teach them what healthy relationships look like. Don't just say 'don't do it'.

So glad my mother pounded the idea of getting an education and living my life to the fullest before having a baby into my head from when I was a child and through out my adolescence. I'm 29 years old, married and STILL don't feel ready for the responsibility of a baby.
I can't even imagine, I was a typical teenager loved sleeping in during the holidays, loved staying up late, I couldn't even imagine being responsible for someone else.
I had my daughter at 19, I never slept in late, I've been working since about 14, I graduated highschool, but I wanted children young. My husband and I were ready, I have zero regrets, being a mother is the best thing I have ever done and when I finish homeschooling her I'm going to become a birthing doula. We will be home owners in the next couple months, and currently live on our own. Never once have we been dependant on our parents. There are so many of us young mom's who PLANNED our children and are good mother's despite what society tells us🤷🏻♀️
oyin ireland controversial but you are right. There’s long term, short term and emergency contraception. If she was affected by long term contraception she could have at least used the morning after pill which is most effective within 12hrs after the act but is efficacious 72 hrs after. She made smart choices after doing a stupid thing.
My mom had me when she was 18. She told me over and over again, you do not want to be a teen mom, it’s hard. Even tho my dad was around, it was still hard because he went off to college. So she was raising me mostly by herself. She got her GED and married my dad and they’re still married, but that is so rare. I’m 28, married, and have a good job and honestly I’m scared to have a child. I don’t feel ready! So I know these teen moms are scared!!
No you're not too young you're the right age because the risks are much lower and you'll have enough energy to chase after the baby when he/she becomes a toddler have all your kids well before you hit 40

With good support, these girls can achieve their goals. My cousin was 14 when she became a teen mother. She didn’t allow that to stop her from becoming a pharmacist. Her baby graduated from grad school and is doing great. A coworker had her only child at 14 and is a healthcare executive with her PhD and recently graduated with her JD. It might be harder but not impossible. See yourself leading your baby by example.
Those are the exceptions not the rule. Most teen moms won't see that success. And others don't want to inconvenience their lives to allow that, and they don't necessarily have to.

Their children tend to experience long term side-effects from growing up in a stressful situation however. If you're someone who grew up in poverty, you'll be more likely to remain in poverty regardless of how old you are when you have children (being a teen mom of course makes this more likely), but if you grew up in a financially stable household and you have good social support (ie. a village to help raise your child) you'll probably be fine. in my opinion, the teen mothers who do end up succumbing to mental health issues like anxiety, depression and drug addiction are the ones with bad parents who kicked them out on to the street instead of supporting them so that they could finish high school and go to college.

Girls being married at the age of 13 was normal not that long ago. Even now certain states allow underage marriage with the consent of a parent. Preaching abstinence has been proven to contribute to the downfall of certain aspects of society.
Why are girls sexually maturing at age 8, 9, 10? Too many hormones in meat & milk. Vegan girls start periods around 16. Something to think about. No sexual maturity no sexual urges to fight.

Jevonte Hodge You obviously know nothing about the cycle of poverty. These teenagers did not choose to be brought up in poverty, surrounded by systematic and societal ills. As much as Americans like to think people can do it on their own, those people are the exception to the rule. People in poverty need help to climb the rungs of a caste system, and they definitely don’t get it from a society like the US that constantly punishes the poor and under privileged. Read any journal articles on the subject. The proof is in the pudding. All societies that help each other (Higher taxes, more government help) have better societal, health and education standards. I live in Canada and we aren’t perfect here but damn, living here is a dream compared to the US.
I had the robot baby in high school while on the soccer team and I was ZOMBIE TIRED for my games and practice. I’m 25 years old now and still not ready for that kind of crying yet 🥴

To all teen moms (and responsible teen dads) watching this video: Do NOT allow the put downs and bad predictions influence YOUR outcome in YOUR life. Instead, use that negativity to light that fire in you to prove it all wrong. Even if at times you feel as though your life is over--trust me, it's not. RISE ABOVE. Your child(ren) is/are your motivation to improve your situation in life. Be constantly resourceful. Make a plan. Adjust your plan frequently and as needed. Keep fighting and moving forward. Yes, your education and dreams may be harder now to accomplish, but you can still obtain what you want in life while being as good a parent as you can be. I wish someone had had ONE good comment or word of encouragement for me--but as this documentary illustrates--the vast majority of influential adults around a teen parent will only offer prejudiced and negative commentary. I was a teen mom at age 15 and at age 18. I lived through abject poverty even bouncing from homeless shelter to homeless shelter for a year in my early 20's. I never lost hope I would one day be able to go to med school to be a doctor which was a lifelong dream. In any way I could, I was always working toward it whether getting a GED, taking college night classes after work, working 2 jobs and selling Avon on the weekends--- anything I had to do to always be responsible for my children's livelihood and the attainment of my goals. It took me until I turned 42 to graduate from residency as a physician. Not one of my 3 children ever became parents in their teens. In their 30's and late 20's now without children. All of them responsible, productive citizens. And I now earn a very comfortable living and it gives me great joy to help them in any way possible. You can do it-- don't let anyone or anything tell you differently. They harder life pushes you down, the harder you push back! Sending you all prayers and love.
Thank you for sharing you testimony. I wholeheartedly agree with you, as I too , was a teen mom at 17. I graduated high school pregnant and went straight to college. Yes, it’s hard (er), but like you said, my children are my motivation. I’m now a mother of 2 (with the same father, we are now married) and earning my masters degree at one of the best universities in the country. And I have lived experience that aids in my abilities to grasp concepts and be of service to others. I commend you for continuing to follow your dreams❤️❤️❤️ it’s not easy but it is possible. I’m 24 and considered too old to have kids in my culture. My partner and I want to wait until I’m at least 28 and he’s at least 31 to have kids. His mom and my mom were both teen parents. We broke the cycle and are going to consciously and responsibly educate our kids when they are entering those teenage years about being safe and how to use birth control and condoms to prevent pregnancy and STD’s. There are so many resources available now to prevent pregnancy. We should not take those for granted.
Instead of preaching for abstinence, they should give them condoms and birth control pills. Them they would stop having children when still being teens. Less people depending on the government for social assistance.
Not bc pills, implants. Teens aren't reliable about BC pills. BC pills need taken same time daily, antibiotics can interfere with BC pills, overweight girls have less effectiveness from BC pills! Implants and condoms used together= nearly 100% prevention

I think it’s neglect. A lot of the deprived kids feel like the baby will give them the love and attention that they crave and didn’t get because their parents worked so much and could watch over them. The issue is a baby is needy and needs love and attention from the parent not the other way around.

I had to grow up fast when I had to help raise my siblings when my mom became addicted to crack. So grateful my kids have grown up and are living their lives before bringing a life into this world. I'm multiracial and there are many white women who admitted to having abortions and/or taking Plan B in my family. Black and Latinx people tend to be Evangelical (or Catholic) and abortion is a big "No" in those communities. Additionally, those religious views preach abstinence which isn't realistic. So they don't even broach the topic of contraception.
Plan B isn't abortion, and it's a great option on the market today. Just don't make it your go-to method of birth control - it is truly as the name implies, a 'Plan B.'

I was 19 and married when I had my oldest and my youngest followed 2.5 years later. They are now both teenagers and its tough. I was a single mom long before my divorce. I couldn't imagine being any younger. I was 11 when my sister was born. That was amazing birth control lol
And this is why I had the talk with my teenage daughter early on and continue to have it and made it clear I will not be angry if she needs to be on BC. And my son who just turned 12 will also be taught and reminded about contraception and the consequences that can come from not using it.
I have the perfect solution. Have these teens in at-risk schools do community service at a day care. Ive been a preschool teacher for 4 years and it really put me off from having kids. Once they realize all the work that goes into taking care of a baby and then when they realize it gets even more difficult when they turn 2. They will really think twice. Plus itll be great to have extra helpers in the classroom, especially since teens have more energy to run around with and bond with the kids.
Even though this comment is three years old it’s interesting. In high school I had a friend named Lizbeth. She was one of the oldest of five. I believe she is the 2nd or 3rd oldest. She usually took care of her younger siblings since at the time they were pre-elementary school age. She would always tell me about how awful it would be sometimes and other stuff. She still wanted kids.

my mother had 5 kids by 24 and was a single teenage parent. she whipped into us to be careful. as a result neither me nor my brothers have children. i'm 27, married and have a stable job in education. as much as i would love kids, me and my husband just aren't ready. we're waiting. i've currently got a contraceptive implant and we still use condoms to be extra safe. we've agreed that in 3 years we will have another serious talk about children and if we're not ready then, then we won't have kids for another year or so.
I was a young mum 19 and I had 2 girls unfortunately their father was abusive to me. he got 6 years for GBH and false imprisonment. I still have PTSD from this 20 years later but I grew up quickly moved away and raised two caring, independent young women. I was also a blind mum and am proud of raising good people. I now have 3 grandchildren and my daughter is also a young mum with 1 year old twins and a 2 year old and no she isn’t a scrounger and will return to work as soon as they attend nursery. Their father also works hard full time and they are an amazing little family. I’m glad I had my girls when I did before my sight deteriorated and other health conditions presented. Please don’t judge young parents as many do an amazing job and work extremely hard.
Why the HELL didn’t the mom of the two girls get her younger daughter on birth control. The instant she knew the older daughter was pregnant not once, but twice, it should have been done. 9/10 times I blame the parents. She’s a kind woman and I feel for her, but what a massive mistake.

I think this young girl made a great decision. I have never heard any one talk about the mental health part of being a to young parent. The frontal lobe has not developed. I would love to also put the spot light on the BOYS and giving them the responsibility also.
The netherlands also has a medical approach where children must go to an appointment once they reach a certain age; at that appointment they are congratulated and informed about what puberty is and how it will change their bodies and feelings.
Where is the accountability of the parents? Who lets their child decide about birth control. Why is no one making the boys accountable? No one makes a baby by themselves. A boy or man can just decide to bail on their baby but the mother has to always be there...
I had my son at age 19. His father bailed immediately. I was nearly homeless several times during my pregnancy and far from my family home. I was so afraid. It was very difficult. Now, I am 26 years old. My son is 6 years old and absolutely beautiful. His father is now attempting introduction. I’ve done this alone for so long I’m wondering if I should even allow it. I am 36 years old and just ad my first planned baby. I’m married and we both have good jobs however I still worry if I can give everything to my child as she needs. Everything it’s so expensive and it’s hard to raise a baby. I cannot imagine what these girls are going through alone. It’s so sad I wish them all to have a good life and their babies too unfortunately that’s not reality

The US is really a third world country. In third world countries teenage girls are forced to marry. If given a choice these girls would have preferred to study. But in the US, with all the freedom, these girls get pregnant. And the vicious cycle will repeat itself in the next generation.

The young Appalachian Dad of 2 is a very unique young man. Most young dads just bolt...this young man should be commended for doing what is right and trying to be a parent and provider. If you are shocked by American prices, check Canadian ones! 500g of baby formula costs about $45-60 for the powdered stuff. Liquid or ready to feed is even more expensive. Plus diapers, food, child care if you don't have someone to babysit. Usually in my area a daycare charges $1200 month per child.

Having a first baby at 14 might be a genuine mistake. But it's difficult for me to understand getting pregnant right away with the second child.
There's a misconception that you can't get pregnant for a certain amount of time after giving birth. I can't imagine not just being pregnant that young, but having yet another kid when you weren't even ready for the first one!

While babies do bring love and joy, having a baby shouldn't be about what the baby can give you, thats a recipe for disaster.

I can't even imagine, I was a typical teenager loved sleeping in during the holidays, loved staying up late, I couldn't even imagine being responsible for someone else.
I had my daughter at 19, I never slept in late, I've been working since about 14, I graduated highschool, but I wanted children young. My husband and I were ready, I have zero regrets, being a mother is the best thing I have ever done and when I finish homeschooling her I'm going to become a birthing doula. We will be home owners in the next couple months, and currently live on our own. Never once have we been dependant on our parents. There are so many of us young mom's who PLANNED our children and are good mother's despite what society tells us🤷🏻♀️

If she was affected by long term contraception she could have at least used the morning after pill which is most effective within 12hrs after the act but is efficacious 72 hrs after. So she was raising me mostly by herself. She got her GED and married my dad and they’re still married, but that is so rare.

With good support, these girls can achieve their goals. My cousin was 14 when she became a teen mother. She didn’t allow that to stop her from becoming a pharmacist. Her baby graduated from grad school and is doing great. A coworker had her only child at 14 and is a healthcare executive with her PhD and recently graduated with her JD. It might be harder but not impossible. See yourself leading your baby by example.
A handful of cases here and there. Those who have resources and help. Either way.......14 years old?? Not physically nor mentally healthy!!
Those are the exceptions not the rule. Most teen moms won't see that success. And others don't want to inconvenience their lives to allow that, and they don't necessarily have to.
@@jellybeans9283 Actually, recent stats (2018) have found that most teenage mothers have caught up to their peers in terms of career and education by the age of 30. Their children tend to experience long term side-effects from growing up in a stressful situation however.
If you're someone who grew up in poverty, you'll be more likely to remain in poverty regardless of how old you are when you have children (being a teen mom of course makes this more likely), but if you grew up in a financially stable household and you have good social support (ie. a village to help raise your child) you'll probably be fine.
in my opinion, the teen mothers who do end up succumbing to mental health issues like anxiety, depression and drug addiction are the ones with bad parents who kicked them out on to the street instead of supporting them so that they could finish high school and go to college.

As much as Americans like to think people can do it on their own, those people are the exception to the rule. People in poverty need help to climb the rungs of a caste system, and they definitely don’t get it from a society like the US that constantly punishes the poor and under privileged. Read any journal articles on the subject. The proof is in the pudding. All societies that help each other (Higher taxes, more government help) have better societal, health and education standards. I live in Canada and we aren’t perfect here but damn, living here is a dream compared to the US.

To all teen moms (and responsible teen dads) watching this video: Do NOT allow the put downs and bad predictions influence YOUR outcome in YOUR life. Instead, use that negativity to light that fire in you to prove it all wrong. Even if at times you feel as though your life is over--trust me, it's not. RISE ABOVE. Your child(ren) is/are your motivation to improve your situation in life. Be constantly resourceful. Make a plan. Adjust your plan frequently and as needed. Keep fighting and moving forward. Yes, your education and dreams may be harder now to accomplish, but you can still obtain what you want in life while being as good a parent as you can be. I wish someone had had ONE good comment or word of encouragement for me--but as this documentary illustrates--the vast majority of influential adults around a teen parent will only offer prejudiced and negative commentary. I was a teen mom at age 15 and at age 18. I lived through abject poverty even bouncing from homeless shelter to homeless shelter for a year in my early 20's. I never lost hope I would one day be able to go to med school to be a doctor which was a lifelong dream. In any way I could, I was always working toward it whether getting a GED, taking college night classes after work, working 2 jobs and selling Avon on the weekends--- anything I had to do to always be responsible for my children's livelihood and the attainment of my goals. It took me until I turned 42 to graduate from residency as a physician. Not one of my 3 children ever became parents in their teens. In their 30's and late 20's now without children. All of them responsible, productive citizens. And I now earn a very comfortable living and it gives me great joy to help them in any way possible. You can do it-- don't let anyone or anything tell you differently. They harder life pushes you down, the harder you push back! Sending you all prayers and love.

Yes, it’s hard (er), but like you said, my children are my motivation. I’m now a mother of 2 (with the same father, we are now married) and earning my masters degree at one of the best universities in the country. And I have lived experience that aids in my abilities to grasp concepts and be of service to others. I commend you for continuing to follow your dreams❤️❤️❤️ it’s not easy but it is possible. I’m 24 and considered too old to have kids in my culture. My partner and I want to wait until I’m at least 28 and he’s at least 31 to have kids. His mom and my mom were both teen parents. We broke the cycle and are going to consciously and responsibly educate our kids when they are entering those teenage years about being safe and how to use birth control and condoms to prevent pregnancy and STD’s. There are so many resources available now to prevent pregnancy. We should not take those for granted.

I thank God my kids decided to wait. These grown behind men getting these girls pregnant, would be underneath some dirt. These girls have no clue what serious life decisions they have made. I'm multiracial and there are many white women who admitted to having abortions and/or taking Plan B in my family. Black and Latinx people tend to be Evangelical (or Catholic) and abortion is a big "No" in those communities. Additionally, those religious views preach abstinence which isn't realistic. So they don't even broach the topic of contraception.
Plan B isn't abortion, and it's a great option on the market today. Just don't make it your go-to method of birth control - it is truly as the name implies, a 'Plan B.'

I was 19 and married when I had my oldest and my youngest followed 2.5 years later. They are now both teenagers and its tough. I was a single mom long before my divorce. I couldn't imagine being any younger. I was 11 when my sister was born. That was amazing birth control lol
And this is why I had the talk with my teenage daughter early on and continue to have it and made it clear I will not be angry if she needs to be on BC. And my son who just turned 12 will also be taught and reminded about contraception and the consequences that can come from not using it.

I have the perfect solution. Have these teens in at-risk schools do community service at a day care. Ive been a preschool teacher for 4 years and it really put me off from having kids.
Once they realize all the work that goes into taking care of a baby and then when they realize it gets even more difficult when they turn 2. They will really think twice.
Plus itll be great to have extra helpers in the classroom, especially since teens have more energy to run around with and bond with the kids.
Even though this comment is three years old it’s interesting. In high school I had a friend named Lizbeth. She was one of the oldest of five. I believe she is the 2nd or 3rd oldest. She usually took care of her younger siblings since at the time they were pre-elementary school age.
She would always tell me about how awful it would be sometimes and other stuff. She still wanted kids.

Pastor Floyd is really doing God's work. Preaching abstinence does not work. Teens need guidance that is realistic. Focusing on boys and men is very admirable too. It always falls on the backs of girls/women.
My friend's child just had a baby. He is 14, It's a "village" helping to raise the baby ❤ thank goodness for family
my mother had 5 kids by 24 and was a single teenage parent. she whipped into us to be careful. as a result neither me nor my brothers have children. i'm 27, married and have a stable job in education. as much as i would love kids, me and my husband just aren't ready. we're waiting. i've currently got a contraceptive implant and we still use condoms to be extra safe. we've agreed that in 3 years we will have another serious talk about children and if we're not ready then, then we won't have kids for another year or so.
Where’s the follow up? I’d love to see where these girls are right now.

I was a young mum 19 and I had 2 girls unfortunately their father was abusive to me. he got 6 years for GBH and false imprisonment. I still have PTSD from this 20 years later but I grew up quickly moved away and raised two caring, independent young women. I was also a blind mum and am proud of raising good people. I now have 3 grandchildren and my daughter is also a young mum with 1 year old twins and a 2 year old and no she isn’t a scrounger and will return to work as soon as they attend nursery. Their father also works hard full time and they are an amazing little family. I’m glad I had my girls when I did before my sight deteriorated and other health conditions presented. Please don’t judge young parents as many do an amazing job and work extremely hard.
Why the HELL didn’t the mom of the two girls get her younger daughter on birth control. The instant she knew the older daughter was pregnant not once, but twice, it should have been done. 9/10 times I blame the parents. She’s a kind woman and I feel for her, but what a massive mistake.

I think this young girl made a great decision. I have never heard any one talk about the mental health part of being a to young parent. The frontal lobe has not developed. I would love to also put the spot light on the BOYS and giving them the responsibility also.

The netherlands also has a medical approach where children must go to an appointment once they reach a certain age; at that appointment they are congratulated and informed about what puberty is and how it will change their bodies and feelings.

Where is the accountability of the parents? Who lets their child decide about birth control. Why is no one making the boys accountable? No one makes a baby by themselves. A boy or man can just decide to bail on their baby but the mother has to always be there...
I had my son at age 19. His father bailed immediately. I was nearly homeless several times during my pregnancy and far from my family home. I was so afraid. It was very difficult. Now, I am 26 years old. My son is 6 years old and absolutely beautiful. His father is now attempting introduction. I’ve done this alone for so long I’m wondering if I should even allow it. Being a teen young mom is hard. Please use protection!!! Be careful!!! Be responsible!!!

I am 36 years old and just ad my first planned baby. I’m married and we both have good jobs however I still worry if I can give everything to my child as she needs. Everything it’s so expensive and it’s hard to raise a baby. I cannot imagine what these girls are going through alone. It’s so sad I wish them all to have a good life and their babies too unfortunately that’s not reality

I literally feel anger and upset for these girls at the same time. Things happen to people but babies having babies is a lot. Some people make it work but others have real difficulties. I really wish them all well with their futures though.

The US is really a third world country. In third world countries teenage girls are forced to marry. If given a choice these girls would have preferred to study. But in the US, with all the freedom, these girls get pregnant. And the vicious cycle will repeat itself in the next generation.

The young Appalachian Dad of 2 is a very unique young man. Most young dads just bolt...this young man should be commended for doing what is right and trying to be a parent and provider. We need to have more education available to young teens so that they don’t make these life altering decisions that’s never good for all involved.

If you are shocked by American prices, check Canadian ones! 500g of baby formula costs about $45-60 for the powdered stuff. Liquid or ready to feed is even more expensive. Plus diapers, food, child care if you don't have someone to babysit. Usually in my area a daycare charges $1200 month per child.
