To me, it was one of those "aha" moments - given the historical context, the language used and traditions of the times, along with physically seeing the landscape in front of us - it just made complete sense!

On the ceiling in front of, and between the large and small niches in the cave wall, is there a vestige of an interior wall, a partition reaching to the ceiling and dividing the two areas (guest room niches and manger)?

You didn't address the possibility that they might have been in the stable because of the purification laws Leviticus 12:1-8 that required a woman to be isolated for 7 days after she had a son. Otherwise the whole household might have been considered to be unclean. What do you know about that?
