A photo challenge with a difference this time as I descend under the streets and houses of Brighton to take a tour of the Victorian sewer system.
Photographically it was a major challenge as the lighting level was exceptionally low and there was not time to stop and take photos.
Camera: Canon 5D mkii
Lens: Canon 24-105L
Strap: RS-Sport from Black Rapid
I always enjoy your videos, Gavin, whether they're Photo Challenges or Tips. Thank you for sharing.
@tomber220 It's called split toning. Basically it's a mono shot but you tone the shadows one colour and the highlights another. Can be done in either Photoshop (Adobe Camera RAW) or Lightroom.
watching your videos is always a pleasure. thanks for this one
Can't wait to get this camera. What a great demonstration!
Thank you for all of the hard work you put into your videos. I am a big fan. Budding new photographer who is trying to learn as much as I can on my own.You are a really good teacher and I would love to hang out with you for a day and soak up all you could teach me.
Your pictures of the most mundane things are really inspiring and touching. thanks again.
Very Nice.......I'm am new to the hobby....just bought a Nikon D7000.....there is so much to learn. People like yourself are making it a bit easier.......thanks so much!
This is a great video....What a great environment to set a good moody kind of tone. The pictures were really awesome! Thanks for sharing!
your last one is really a masterpiece. What mystery it holds
@DannyO1988 Yes I have. Mind you I had put the lens through 3 years of constant use and abuse. The error was caused by a failed aperture motor. It took 3 month to fix (long story) but has been perfect ever since.
Gavin...you really must do more of these photo challenges! I get a lot of inspiration from them and learn a bit too. Now I just need to find some interesting places around my neck of the woods to try my hand at a challenge.
As always - great photos and great post-processing.
Very nice photos! I went to the tunnels under Toronto's Casa Loma (I didn't know they existed) and it was a similar atmosphere. Dark, cold, and most of all, very hard to take good photos because of the lighting.
@dylken21 It was a "mystery challenge" so I had no idea where I was going until I arrived. The 24-105L has a three stop image stabiliser which, if you do the maths, make its handhold ability equivalent to an f/1.4 lens
This was great to watch. Next time you should do the unofficial tour! So much better and you can go to iso 100 and do some torch wiggling! If you're ever in Manchester i would happily show you some fantastic places like this!
I mean seriously...You take and make photographs...hats off to you...
As always a pleasure to watch your video !
I think the split toning is the best way to go with those high ISO Photos to reduce the visible noise without loosing too much details.
I'd prefer another color. But anyway, this is your personal taste.
Great PP as always. ;)
Hi Gavin i look forward to your "15 min challangers " but you dont do enough , i wish i had 1/2 your talent
Only just seen this! Welcome to the world of Urbex! Drains give for some spectacular photos!
@dmoosh It was a "mystery challenge" so I had no idea where I was going till I arrived. Not sure they would have let me in with a mono pod and direct flash would have killed the atmosphere (ambient lighting)
Gavin, stop being so amazing. You're intimidating me.
Very nice! I really hope to see more Photo Challanges from you in the future. They give me very good guide on linking your reality with the framing of the final picture.
Thanks :-)
And now, as always after photo challenges, i'd really appreciate a video where you guide us trough some of the post processing you've done. Especially with these dark (i imagine noisy?) pictures.
i've been waiting for your new vid. yoohoooo!!! Thanks, Gavin. you're the best
Wow great pictures.. The place looks spooky.. its like the setting for a scary movie.. lol
the photos reminded me of old Resident Evil games!
Fantastic shots!
@devonmale69 I took the photos with the Canon 5D mkii, the video was shot on a little Sanyo Xacti HD camcorder
Great video Gavin! Love it.
Nice choice of music. Regards to the cinematographer. And nice pics !
i love your photo challanges Gavin keep em comming=)
@killsharky the 5d mark II is a full frame, so the noise on that is very good, at iso 6400 is very bearable. plus when u edited in lightroom u can take a lot of the noise away as well.
Gavin you do manage to get yourself into some of the most amazing places. Lol
Imagine doing this with your old 40D :O
ISO6400 is just MASSIVE!
Amazing photos! And an exiting adventure :) By the way, you forgot to give the helmet back :D
Nice work like always.
The only thing I didn't understand is why you took a f4 zoom lens into such a narrow and dark place: Wouldn't a prime (f1.8 or bigger) been the better choice for the sewers?
wow ur amazing i wanna be like u in the future
thank you for ur helpful videos
keep it up
1:48 The key tip and I can't make it out! Put it in _____ mode. Sequence of shots. Help?!?!?! Amazingly gorgeous shots.
@gronki1
well it is a full frame Camera (meaning almost double the surface of a aps-c sensor -> very neat noise performance): That and probably some post processing in PS^^
Hi Gavin,
Really enjoyed this one, however I'm really surprised with such low light you didn't use a faster lens? Or did you have a cunning plan?
@svv21 ISO 6400, if you look at the pictures in the video.. You see exactly what aperture, shutter speed and ISO. :)
enjoy your post again. would love to see you give some photoshop tips
I wished the music was a bit quieter and strggled to hear some of your settings - even though I constantly repeated it .
You are a photography idol
3:33 Gavin, is she wearing one of your shirts!?? I wonder if she knew you were there. Or was she with you?
Why didn't you use a prime with a big aperture? What was your reasoning behind taking an f/4 lens? Sure the 24-105 has good range, but all except 1 photo of yours was taken at 24mm.
Would love to hear the thought process of a professional photographer!
loved the pic at 2:24 but as an amateur photographer myself i have a question. Would that particular picture pass (technically) with your shadow in the frame if one has to judge this pic as a critic??
@rskmagic Maybe a BlackRapid RS-Sport?I must get one immediately!!
Hi there gavin! Can you make a tutorial on how you effectively remove noise without loosing the details? Thanks in advance! :)
very nice photos , i have a question if you don`t mind :
how can i make a StereoGraphic 360 Panorama picture ?
waiting for your next video , good luck
Great....I was waiting for this :P
Great video, how did you manage such slow shutter speeds on the run without camera shake?
Hello Gavin!
I`ve got a question, too... I`m thinking about changing from the Pentax K20D to the Canon 5D MK II... Is the Canon the right one or would there be any better... I want to use it primarily as a portrait and landscape camera but also don`t want to spend too much money...
Here in Germany it`s about 2600€ (about £2160) with the 24-70 f2.8 lens and I think that price is O.K. for that camera.
Anyways I`m open for other full frame cameras.
Greetings from Germany!
I do this all the time except without the lights.
Would you say that the IS was more beneficial to less blurry images than if you had taken the 24-70 2.8 L ?
The pier reminds me of Bioshock Infinate.
Cool photos! Very creepy...I like it :D
Let's see you use just the EF 24mm f1.4L II only!
At the start you say on screen Canon 5DmkII was this the camera you were taking photos with or what the video was shot on?
Gavin i have a question. Im actually gettin the 5dmkII with the 24-105 but ive read some reviews and quite a few people have said theres an error1 thats comes up. Contact error. Have you experienced this? Great vid and photos
i love this music! where is it from?
Why didn't u use a fast prime lens Gavin, like a 50mm 1.4.
Did you upgrade finally? 5D MKII....
How do you get so low noise level and smooth images with ISO 6400? Is it just pricey camera, or do you remove it during processing in photoshop, or maybe any other secret?
hey gavin, are your shots processed with increase contrast and sharpening?
@Everywhere2 "burst mode" i believe....
why did you bring a lens that only goes down to f/4 to such a dark environment?
How much noise do you get at ISO 6400? Just for comparison sake, I use Olympus E3 and at ISO 1200, it gives lots of noise.
i was wondering bout the color of the photos did they come out like that or did you chanage it in Photoshop or light room?
What kind of metering mode where you using?
I really appreciate your videos. Thanks.
who operates your video camera
why havent you took with you a monopod or flash?
and did you use spot metering in your metering?
What were you using for focus if it was so dark?
A f/4 lens in low light conditions. Hmm, sketchy...
I would have used a f/2.8 or lower if possible
Another great video. But a prime was far more suitable.
@PhotoGavin could you make a tutorial :)
@Everywhere2 burst...
3:01 Whoa moment. :)
He saw he used manual focus.
and why is that a tourist attraction again? lol
they way you compose is very strange to me... i guess i am too repetitive and old fashioned, i have to start thinking in new ways to do it
wow .. i was waiting for britney spears
You could have probably gotten way cooler stuff if you were free to roam and not with a tourist party :P
you sound funny...lol..
