Planes are the subject of this 15 minute photo challenge. They make great subjects even on a cold, grey January morning like the day I visited.

The contrast and colours of the photos really bring out the taste of old days aviation.. NICE~!
I started drooling at the endless photo opportunities that could be had there.
Thanks I really enjoy your 15 minute challenges.
I find these 15 minute challenges so inspirational!
I love the way you edit your photos. They always look so bright and crisp. Great work, as always!!
Great 15 min challenge Gavin! I really enjoyed your enthusiasm and the walkthrough of your thought process for each shot. I love shooting planes so there's no way I could have spent only 15 minutes there...
Thanks for sharing this and please keep them coming!
Fav moment "It moves!" That cracked me up.
Love all your challenges but this was the best one yet. Excellent ! thanks for sharing.
that shot where you moved the prop is amazing!
Great video Gavin! Love these 15 minute challenges. Keep em coming!
Beautiful photos. Great master of photography.
Love your videos. We use them as inspiration for photo class at school. Keep it up. They rock.
I love the 15 minutes challenges ! I found it so fun when Gavin found out the propeller moved! Great shots as always .
that's so coooool! in the aviation museums i've been in they dont let you go near or touch any aircraft. many planes are suspended from the roof as well. I wish there's a museum like gatwick near where i live.
The shot at 5:15 is breathtaking!
Great shot Mr. Hoey.
Another great video Gavin. I didn't realise there was an aviation museum at Gatwick - I'll check it out. The Imperial War Museum at Duxford is another really great place to photograph a huge variety of aircraft .
Hi all. It nice to see the merging of two images; I made a similar montage, when photographing Smithfields market (nr St Pauls, London).
The problem with this location is the four phoneboxes which are are under the canopy, are practically in the dark, so exposing for the phoneboxes left the daylight in the background blown-out.
Using the cross-hairs in my viewfinder, I composed the photo, positioning them at a precise point. I then set the exposure for the phoneboxes, and took the shot.
Next, I aimed my lens at the daylight in the backgrouind. I set the exposure (press your shutter button half way down).
Then I repositioned the crosshairs where I had them in the 1st photo.
I now had two images which were aligned identically. One was exposed for the light detail, the other for the dark detail.
In photoshop, I selected the daylight portion, using Quickmask - You can do it thus;
Open both images.
You will have one which was exposed for the phoneboxes (under the canopy) and one which was exposed for the daylight in the background.
Using the image which was exposed for the daylight in the background;
(i) Press D to return your foreground and background colours to the default setting. (Black and White - this is essential).
(ii )Press 'Q' to turn on Quickmask, then select the paintbrush tool. Now paint over the portion you wish to select.
Your selection will appear Red.
(iii) Press Q. Your selection will appear with dotted lines around it. Now press shift+Ctrl+ I. This will inverse the selection.
(iv) Now press Ctrl J. This will turn your selection into a separate layer.
(v) Select the layer; Press Ctrl+A, Then press Ctrl C to copy the selection.
(vi) Then go to the image which was exposed for the phoneboxes and press Ctrl + V (paste). You will see your selection appear on the image.
(vii) Position the selection, then finish off with the eraser tool.
I use this method whenever the composition has big differences between light and dark.
It never fails.
I'm sure there must be a photoshop tutorial on You Tube, somewhere! Practice. And more practice. Or better still buy a book.
Selection skills are a must when using Photoshop.
Good luck to all.
10/10 for the video, Gavin.
I'll be visiting the museum pretty soon.
Cheers!
Wow, this was yet another fantastic 15 minute photo challenge video! This is my style of shooting. Great Job!
One of your BEST photo-shoots :))!
Great as always.
Great pictures Gavin. Great work altogether.
Great as always!
Another great photo challenge. great post work
Brilliant photos mate. Brilliant.
Agreed.. Gav show how you did those post process.. Nice video once again and really cool pictures..!!
@MHammondOrganist Vibrance was the key, but also pumped up the fill light to open up the shadows.
Oh my word, the picture at 5:16 ish is amazing!!
Hi Gavin. Im an aviation photographer myself! Nice to see a video about it. Some great shot's there as well. Thanks.
thanks Gavin! wonderful photos and tips
my friends and I in Saudi Arabia love your work and tutorials Gavin. we really enjoy watching your vids and and apply them in our photography :D
thank you so much for the effort man :)
Thanks for this informative video. I Will be going to the Melbourne international air show in a few days and will be taking photographs of the aircraft on the ground. I do not have a telephoto lens for close up air shots.
Sounds like you use Magix Music Maker for the music :)
Thanks Gavin! :-) I can´t wait for Your next 15 min photo callenge. It aspire me to photograph. I got my Canon 60D for x-mas and Tamron 18-250mm. I have lots of fun with that, and try to have your lessons back in my mind when I take pictures.
wonderful shoots!!!
Great video Gavin!!! Thanks.
@svinehunden I used a fair amount of vibrance in Adobe Camera RAW, so the colours will either pop or mute depending on the look I was after.
very nice video and cracking editing on the shots for the video. great work!
Gavin, i would be very nice to see an extra episode where you give us an example of some post processing of the 15m challenges.
@gronki1 Look WAYYYY back and you'll find a couple of early 15 min photo challenges with the 50mm f1.8... about time I did another I think.
Great stuff..... will be trying the 2 exposure trick in my next outing... Cheers!
The 1 dislike is the guy that found out you turned the propeller! xD
It was great when you found out the propellor turned ahahaha :D Great shots mate.
@PhotoGavin I was also impressed by the result you got merging two images into one. May be it is possible for you to make such kind of photoshop video lesson. I think it can be interesting for many people.
I really loved this photoset, thank you.
Nice choice of music, great video again
@xdownthelightx I use the noise reduction features found in Lightroom 3 / Photoshop CS5 which are very impressive.
You nearly kneeled in a puddle of oil at 4:41 LOL.
i love your shots and framing. alot of your shots have this graphic poster design to them =] amazing
-graphic design student
Man you are talented!!
Hey gavin,
Thank you so mutch for giving me inspiration to take some pics at my local (military) aviation museum in Soesterberg.
I will send you a PM with a link to the shots I took
Thanks again, really looking forward to your next vid!
5:15 is gorgeous, as everyone is saying ;)
But yeah, I could've spent all day here with my DLSR. SO many unique planes, lots of great angles. There were some planes with twin propellers (see how there are actually 2 propellers on each engine on the plane in the picture at 6:07 and the yellow one in the background at 4:19), and I was really hoping you'd do something with those. Great propeller shots possible there
Very Nice Photo's
those pictures were fantastic!Gavin (Y)
Awesome work....
"IT TUUURNS" :D
Gavin, This has been the best shoot so far IMHO, one request though, could you do a video on putting a panorama from a hand held photo to be perfectly aligned?
Thanks so much for your videos, they are so helpful!
Cheers m8 ;)
@ktrwcm2010 General rule for (handheld) sharp shots: use a shutter speed of 1/millimeters. E.g.: he needs a shutter speed of 1/24 (1/30) or less when he shoots at 24mm (zoomed out). The more you zoom in, the faster your shutter speed needs to be in order to get a sharp picture.
To get a higher shutter speed you can: 1) increase sensitivity (iso) 2) decrease aperture
But he wants to keep his aperture so he doubles his ISO, resulting in a doubled shutter speed.
You are great. Respects from Poland. :)
Like a few other comments i would love to see some of the post work you have done, the pictures have turned out great for the conditions you are in with the weather and lighting.
Have you got any tutorials up for colour correction/colour enhancing type stuff already..?
@tudajfor Not much to show if I did. Photoshop's Photomerge has been so good since CS3 that I don't have to do any retouching.
@reik2006 A little to perfect, don't you think :-) Might just be a video coming on that one.
that was such an optical illusion at 6:30 - at first i thought the jet engine wasn't that big, but then when you walked closer, it became giant!
@PhotoGavin I'm looking forward to it ;)
Hi Gavin,
Great photo challenge as always! I would love to see your post-processing steps on this one - especially on the RAF decal earlier on the piece and the very last jet engine shot. I love how you brought out the "grunginess" of the old aircraft.
Also, for one of the first pictures you had iso400 and a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second. Is there are reason you went for this combo and not iso100 at 1/125th of a second?
Cheers,
Carl
it turns master!!
@FanboyRecording I briefly covered it in my last 15 min challenge video... Take an meter reading from the centre... set that reading in manual mode (all images the same exposure)... overlap the photos by roughly 30%... stich with Photomerge in Photoshop
@Scoobymad007 They have opendays twice a month. Outside of these times it's by appointment. Check out their website for info and remember to leave them a decent donation.
@computersguy13 The link is at the end of the video and that ditty was HEADDING_FOR_THE_BATTLE which seemed rather apt I felt :-)
absolutly awesome, thanks for your videos..
¿wich mode you used the camera?
I'm always a little curious watching your videos (which I like, I hasten to add!) why you don't make use of a battery grip? I notice you reaching over your camera a lot in portrait orientated shots. I find that the second shutter release button my my battery grip makes taking these significantly more comfortable. I also like the added bulk in my hand even for landscape shots, it lets me little finger help more with the grip.
real nice shots Gavin, i got to a lot of car meets i'm a car enthusiast and there was 2 guys with better cameras and lens have an Olympus e520 with a 14-42mm i believe lens i told the guy they were making me look bad with there better lens. He said its the way you use it that matters. i really want to get a bigger lens but what you think. I just started Photography, but been a a fan for a while.. Thanks Leo
Hey Gavin, I love your style of photography so much! Just one concern, as a pilot and aspiring aviation photographer just be extremely careful turning those propellers! Otherwise I would love to see more pictures of the museum or even spotting at Gatwick ;)
@hassoun6 A tripod would help, but it's not "needed", Photoshop's Auto Align Layers is the answer you're looking for.
@PhotoGavin I have not even thought of. I plan to buy 7d so I wanted to see some photos from him.
As others have mentioned, you should show us examples of post-production.
Also I think you forgot to mention that the HDR at 2:23 would require a tripod, even though it seems that you didn't use one.
And, last but not least, let's see more videos please!
Hi Gaving, do you mind giving a tutorial on how to take those panos you take handheld please?? it would be great, i've been hanging to a tripod to do so, and it really sucks some time! cheers! great job BTW.
Great photos! Are those original photos on the video without being retouched or manipulated in photoshop?
Yeah 5:15 was my favorite by far!
Hey Gavin,
I love this video. Can I ask for a suggestion? I love and regulary do Aircraft photography, speccially during landing. Normally I use f8 - f9 Do you think I shuld use much more?
i agree with everyone else, a video on your post production would be a massive help.
The panoramic, the propellors and tne engine... My favourite shots !! STEPPHAN2733/twitter and Flickr... Great job Jedi Master!! Cheers from Trinidad and Tobago
Love how you bring the colors out. The photos of the plane decals look so dull in the video, but the images you took seemed to pop with color. I have big trouble doing this. Can you explain? Vibrance?
@PhotoGavin any chance you can make a photoshop tutorial on your panoramic image you made?
I love your photo challenge!!!! But could you tell me why did you put the ISO at 400 ??? The weather seems cloudly but not as dark....
yep c'mon gav, vids on post production of one of your 15 min videos please??
Awesome!!
Why don't you go airplane spotting for your next 15min photo challenge? I am a airplane spotter myself and I would love to see what you come up with!
Oh, yes propellors move:p really liked that one
Hi Gavin - Love your work, and your videos! I'm just wondering, regarding the last image you took inside the jet engine (the wide angle one) - how did you get those striking colours in photoshop? Was it just increasing the saturation/vibrance, or was there more to it?
If you have a spare moment, I'd be honoured if you could have a look at some of my work (I have a couple of videos of my photos here on my channel) and give me a bit of expert critique. But don't feel obliged ;)
Many thanks
Martin
could you briefly explain how you merged the two image of the airplane and the sky (2:00 mark) together to get that great result ? thx
oh man so many nice aircrafts for a photograf a dream but for a pilot or a aircraft lover :( oh my gott these aircrafts must be restera and didn`t rot where only a few people can see these aircrafts :D
I dont know when or why did I sub U, but I am glad i did :D
I really like the plane panorama picture. Do you have a website that i can buy prints on?
maybe you can explain to me how you made the last shot to look like HDR pic?
Can you please use the following challenge Canon EOS 7D?
OMG can you please teach me how to photoshop at 2:23? what tools did you use? can you please briefly explain plz plz plz....
PROCESSING TUTORIAL PLEAAAZZZEEEE!
I think this is all HDR (High Dynamic Range) isn't?
I thought that with a high ISO pictures came out grainy? How do you get good shots with 1600 ISO?
@anyvid100 Life on the edge, my new motto for 2011 ;-)
What song is in the background? I saw where it came from, but that doesn't give the song name or link/location.
hi, what mode do you usually use? i'm a beginner and i find it hard to use full manual mode..
@PhotoGavin Ok, but maybe combine it with some other things that you did on the other photos in this video?
Anyway, thx for a quick response!
Plane of the panoramic picture looks like he's smiling :p
Talk about photoshoping! Awesome photos though, good work and nice angels.
PROCESSING TUTORIAL!!!
It turns LOL !!!! ha ha ha ha :)
