Sounds like Project Farm could do a test.
Agreed !!
Project farm is one of the only UA-cam people I'll take product purchasing advice. I will say that I've taken Mr. Whisperers advice and have not been let down
Been using Carbon Coat on the Table Saw, Jointer and Band Saw. I build custom doors so the tools get used 45 to 50 hours a week. Also I’m in Missouri. Carbon Coat is far superior than any thing else I’ve used.
After your first video i tried some leftover ceramic coating i had for my car and very sloppily applied to my table saw. One winter in, and it's very apparent where i missed in my application, but the bulk looks great. Be very interesting how a proper application of a proper compound will do.
Been using Johnsons paste wax on my tools for over 50 years, no rust. Seems like nano coatings are the latest snake oil; put it on your projects, car, floors, now tools. I'll just keep using paste wax and keep that money for buying wood.
I did this process to recondition my saw stop, jointer and bandsaw. Amazing product and results - the reconditioning products and the carbon coat itself. However, all that pad work destroyed my festool sander pad. It eroded the hook and loop "hooks" right off of it so it wouldn't grip sanding discs anymore. It's a simple solution, as the sander pad is obviously replaceable but just a heads up. If I were to do it again, I'd use a crappy RO sander as I could get a sacrificial sander cheaper than the festool pad.
Or buy an interface pad for your sander. Their details says:
Use of this interface pad has several benefits. Particularly when using net style abrasives, it provides a much improved connection between your sander and the abrasive disc. The protection pad also minimises wear and tear on the hook and loop facing on your sander’s base, greatly extending the working life of the base.
When the interface pad eventually wears simply peel off and replace. The pad comes in a pack of 2, so you will immediately have a spare to hand.
I had a table saw outside for years. I sprayed it with lacquer and it held up quite well.
Slightly off topic, apologies. When you came to STL for book signing. I wanted to thanks to your wife who was so nice. I wasn’t able to wait, but want to support you. I went behind you two and asked if I could buy a book. She was so nice, and even got you to sign it for me. Class act. Thanks.
i swear by Rust Free and Boeshield by Boeing. Rust free is like magic, and Boeshield has not failed me yet.
Agree with you, @crashkg. No disrespect to Marc, but my routine is scrubbing my saw bed with WD40 (for lube) and 400 grit paper on a flat scrap block, cleaning off the WD40, then a liberal spray-down of Boeshield. I plan it so that this sits overnight to soak. I find it builds up in the iron over time, so you progressively need to hit the saw fewer times per year. I live in Virginia as well, so understand the evil that is humidity, and am still on my first can of Boeshield after about 4 years.
Just purchased the reconditioning oil with your code to restore my late father-in-laws cabinet saw, drill press, and jointer. Fingers crossed it works well.
This would be an interesting thing to try on handplanes since they are cast iron. Rust preventive and slick surface to boot. Me likie idea.
Hi. Thank you, perfect timing. I just bought a used 6” Powermatic jointer. It’s not to rusty but it definitely needs a bit of TLC. Here in Michigan I am constantly chasing the problem of rust. I will give this product a try. Thx!
if there is a citrus smell I bet it contains D-limonene which is a good cleaner, but it is very harsh on certain types of plastic so just be careful you don't over spray any
I live within 15 miles of you shop, and have had cast iron surfaced machines for over 10 years in my non-insulated garage. I apply paste wax twice a year, and have experienced no rust. More tool use would likely necessitate more frequent paste wax application, which takes only a few minutes.
I will give that a shot! I live in Iowa. In the summer you can walk from the front door outside to the back door, and, need another shower. I also run a free standing dehumidifier in the garage. While we run the heat & AC in there, the dehumidifier helps really keep it nice with doors going up and down. I have to admit to. I am a huge fan of Evapo-Rust. I have used Rust Free as well. Most good stores that sell wood working tools carry it as well as Boeshield T9.
Was this video sponsored? Did I miss something at the beginning?
- Ah ha. Just rewatched and noticed the “paid promotion” tag at the beginning (small, in upper-left corner).
What should I know to make an informed decision?
Also in MO, not far from you at all, will be getting this stuff!
I don't care about myself as much as this guy cares about his drill press. 😂
In south Georgia rust is a way of life. Have to check out this product.
I've been thinking of doing this and took advantage of your discount code to get both the reconditioning oil and the coating kit. Hopefully it will work as well for me. - Chris
show us the drill chuck process
Would this work on hand plane bodies?
Not sure why I had to look at an opening commercial to get the this video when the whole video was a commercial itself.
That misery humidity ain’t no joke… RCJH 😜
Did you remove the machining marks from the cast iron or do any polishing previously? I'm wondering if doing so to my bandsaw would make this product more effective
Man, you move around a lot...over the years. What a pain to break down and set up shop again. I'm too lazy to just clean up my shop, never mind move it. lol.
The Emperor Protects!
Do you think this product, if applied to the sole of a metal plane, would be durable?
You said dog ear. The cat woke up. I think your in trouble 😂
Shout out wood working, and the Zelda t-shirt. Probably gold cartridge. Ultra-based.
Nice.
Great product it’s hard to tell on camera but it looks great. I like the look of your keyless chuck could you tell me what brand that is thanks
How did we get by before this product😱
Surprised you didn't mention electrolysis, though it wouldn't be suitable for table tops and huge pieces.
What do I use on my CyberTruck?
Great job! Out of curiosity, did you coat the entire column or just the rusted area? Do you dehumidify your shop in the summer? And humidify it in the winter?
I was lazy and only focused on the rusted are for the rust removal. But when adding the carbon coat we tried to hit the entire column. I do run two dehumidifiers in the shop. I do not add humidity in winter
I did not know that you moved! Shows you how often I get notifications if new videos 😔 I hope that you enjoy tge new place. Looks like a possibly bigger shop area 😁
As part of the move he was able to go from a garage shop to a detached building, so he definitely upsized.
As I get my shop set up in Hawaii with a number of used tools that are showing the effects of a very humid environment this will be on my list of things to try to get things cleaned up. Thanks for the video and observations on it.
Powermatic back on board?
Nope.
Haha Zelda!
is this not just scotch Brite
Would have been better if you did half with and half okd school.
Similar results with steel wool and wd-40. No power tools needed
Hmm... a regular application of Pledge (furnisher polish) or the more expensive WD40, say weekly(?) would also prevent such rust from ever gaining a foothold, me thinks. Still good to see you got it almost looking new again.
DO NOT use wd40
As a clarification: wd40 is not a protectant. Your stuff will rust if you use it that way
@@1320crusierjust curious your reasoning as to why.
WD40 with scotch brite, Naptha to remove WD40, and paste wax with a scotch brite in that order are effective.
I’ve been using a homemade soft wax with Orange solvent and scotch brite lately myself.
I used the WD40 method as mentioned previously. It works but I prefer my wax now myself.
@@1320crusieryour clarification was posted after I added my comment haha
@@1320crusier In the old days, as I remember, folks would keep a greasy rag nearby and wipe down the equipment with the rag. Would that suffice?
Don't ruin Missouri
It was ruined before I got here.
I cringed when I saw him wearing latex gloves while clenching the abrasive pad around the spinning chuck. Wearing gloves around an active drill press is extremely hazardous.
If you have high humidity in the workshop that causes rusty tools then why not put a dehumidifier in and dry out the air a little. I live in the very damp north west of the UK and my workshop is a large shed size 20' x 7' and stays dry and no rusty tools with a small unit.
Start out teaching techniques, end up being a salesman. Gotta pay the bills, but don't loose site
Dude, he just did an in-depth 11-part series on building a sideboard that was going to be a paid course, but he released it for free. I don't recall there being a single in-video ad, and about the only product shout-out was for his backside sandpaper. Also, this was a short stand-alone video specific to the product, not an infomercial hidden inside other content. If you don't want to watch it, don't click on it.
Have you heard about some of the new car waxes Ceramic + Graphene? Turtle Wax makes this paste wax. What do you think about using it for tool tables?
Pretty interesting indeed, Marc! 😊
Thanks for sharing!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I live in MD and ill try this out, but my usual go to is Boeshield T-9
I have that same shirt. Greatest video game series ever.
I use Fluid Film for this.
I live in Georgia so we have plenty of humidity. I have been working with Carbon Method for a while now and they have been a supporter of my channel. I use This on ALL of my cast iron and it has saved me major headache. I also use their nano coating on all of my table builds and it is also amazing. You should give it a try.
Been looking for something like this for my table saw, jointer, and drill press. Definitely going to search for the other video you mentioned. Thanks for all the hard work making these videos!
Would you use “Glide” in place of one’s favorite wax for periodic maintenance?
I live in a temperate PNW rain forest (120+ inch rain per year). My shop is large and unheated (impracticable to dehumidify). I haven’t tried Carbon Method yet; however, everything else I have tried fails, as I often get condensed water overnight. My current workaround is to cover the flat cast-iron surfaces with cut-to-size wood/particle board after applying Boeshield. This is satisfactory as long as I immediately cover the surfaces after use. I’ll try Carbon Method even though the cost seems unreasonably high.
Excellent !
Awesome, now you can check your hair in your drill press table too. It is a two-fer.
I may need to try this in swampy north Florida.
thanks for the reminder. In Florida here and I must get after several rust spots.
Interesting stuff, but you really buried the fact this is a paid advertisement. Kinda surprising to see, if I'm honest.
Seriously?! The first word in the description is #ad and the first thing you see when you press play is "contains paid promotion" at the top left of the player. Furthermore, the second sentence in my descriptions says explicitly that this is a paid advertisement. I guess "kinda buried" means something different where you're from because to me this is what I consider "kinda overt and obvious."
@@woodwhispererThen this may be reflective of the other channels I follow on the site that would have verbally mentioned it in the script and added something like #ad or #sponcon into the title itself. But thinking about it, those channels are all EU or UK based, so they may have legal requirements they need to follow. So perhaps it's both, that it _is_ obvious to you and buried to me. (Also speaking for myself, I've grown to block out all the toasts and cards that flash at the edges of the screen because I want to engage with the video itself, and I rarely read descriptions unless it's to seek clarification of something in the video. So the way you highlight the fact it's paid content is invisible to the way I (and maybe only I) consume content. I hope it is just me, then.) Sorry to have caused offense.
No worries. But if you're bothered by things like this enough that it causes you to leave a comment, it might be worth taking a few seconds to read descriptions and pay attention to the on-screen messages designed to keep you informed of the very thing you're concerned about. I also consume a lot of content from the UK and other niches outside of woodworking and almost never see anyone do anything more than I've done here. In fact, most times they're much less obvious than I am.
Will it be available in europe?
Wisconsinite here. Basically swamp level humidity when it’s not freezing. Going to give this kit a shot this summer. We’ll see how it fares. Really tired of having to remove rust before I use my shop tools lol.
From a fellow Wisconsinite, you said it all exactly right. I’ll be giving it a go as well. Good luck!
Have you realy said:"....take of the Schmutz... ?? 3:28
"Schmutz" is a german word. Is there no word in English language? @woodwisperer
It's pretty common up here in the Northeast, coming both from German and through Yiddish.
English is a Germanic language, so Deutsch words aplenty.
Ah! Now i know. Thanks.@@abydosianchulac2
I’ve used CorrosionX for decades and it never fails. Good enough for the military, good enough for me.
