My wife saw a product on Etsy for plants using pipes and wood for floating shelves. They wanted 150 each. She says can you build this? 89 bucks later I built 4 shelves. Never did it before but I looked at the pictures and figured it out. My point is, save money and do it yourself, if you can. Love your build content as well as all your other content, Matt!
I built some floating shelves recently too! Glued together 2x4s and metal rods in the studs and shelves. Solid as a rock and look pretty good too! Thank God for UA-cam and great producers like this guy.
@@davidcorliss there are several youtubers who pretty much do only build videos and have 100s of thousands of people that watch. So I don't know why people say build videos don't bring in views and likes.
Thanks Matt. That's unbelievable that anyone would think about either charging or spending at that price! If you sell them for that I'm happy for you. Couple tips: My favorite method of splitting a 2x4 to get the same width as the 1.5" thickness is to first set the fence to split it exactly in half, then set the fence to 1.5" (often using the thickness of the board to set it), put the cut edge to the fence and cut off whatever of the rounded edge. There might be a slight bend at the edge, but this is usually hidden by my sanding to ease the edge, so it works out. The second tip is to not use a 2x4 to get 2x2s, but instead use wider stock like a 2x8. There's not as many knot holes, and it's not as wonky with twisting and warping, because it has to be cut from a thicker (and therefore more stable) tree, or at least not at close to the edge of a larger tree. The cost isn't that much greater, and you end up with much straighter towel bars -- especially if you're gonna be charging a couple hundred bucks for them! :)
I agree with you but I must say, the 2x4's in his area look better than the ones in my area. I think his is yellow pine. My area has twisted up clearer pine.
Nice build! I had gotten some 2X red oak, real cheap. My wife saw these on social media and asked if I could make these. I made two towel holders and one smaller (using 1X) one for wash cloths. I was patting myself on the back after completion and upper management loved them.
I was wondering if you could make a video showing how you power all your tools. Like how many 240v outlets you have, any extension cords you use and how they are organized out of the way, or any tools that are basically permanent due to cord length, etc. I can't seem to find much demonstration on this. The cat that pretty much lives upstairs in me and the wife's bedroom loves laying on towels. Sadly our bathroom upstairs, we remodeled the extra space in our upstairs so our bedroom is the whole top floor of our house, is the size of a spare bathroom so we use a shelf for our towels. I soon as I check 10-42 in the morning I'm heading home, changing, going to Lowe's and making a few of these for our bathroom. The wife will finally stop having to yell at the cat for laying on her fresh towels lol.
This is a cool project! Nice and easy, and I can see it being really quick to batch out a bunch of them! Thanks for sharing Matt! And thank you Mrs. Amy for convincing Matt to build it 😁
Yes, as I have often heard since my childhood: Money focuses the mind! I've tinkered in my wee workshop for years, and I've had the same issues with material cost versus end product price. I have to admit, it took me a while to graduate from 'busy fool' to someone who values their own time and skill set. I was recently quoted £5,600 to have the exterior of my house painted. Well, like your good self, I decided to make the time to do it myself. I just loaded an Audible book and set to it. Not really in my comfort zone at the top of a ladder, but with the aid of an extension pole, was able to get the job done over the course of a couple of weekends. Whilst it cost considerably more than eight dollars, I can safely report that I was able to shave a zero off the price with ease.
Your build videos are the best, great job!! It always seems like its been a while for a new build but thats probably just me and my son itchin for a new build video haha🎉 keep em' comin plz!💯
My most popular item is a step stool made from a single 2x4 and some simple dowel joinery. Sells for $35. I've now started making different sizes from 2x10s and selling anywhere from $45-$65!
Thank you Matt. I wish I could join the sawdust start up but There is no way I can afford it.( we are in deep financial trouble) Plus my chemo and all that. I'll always continue to watch 731.
My building started when the wife said "I really like this $2000 entry way table" that was at a local shop. I smarted off and said I can build something better than that if you let me buy a few tools. My first woodworking project started with an entry table built out of Walnut with a live edge top. I spent about $600 on materials (and had leftover walnut). I bought a Dewalt 735X planer, a track saw (yea...could have done without but hey I had a $2k budget), a doweling jig, some pipe clamps, a few other tools (already had a table saw) and a bunch of labor hours and it was all done. I came in right under $2K excluding labor. but I learned a lot and had fun too so I don't really count the labor hours. LOL. The wife loves the table and has tons of photos on her phone to prove it. Moral of the story, that $600 in material saved me enough to buy a bunch of tools. 🙂
Hey Matt great video. As far as stain goes you can skip using the conditioner if you use a gel stain. Also try the Total Boat Halcyon finish. You can get gloss or satin, water based so clean up is easy, and you can brush it on or spray it.
My problem is when I think like a customer I ask myself "what would I do before buying this item from someone else?" So I go search online and find these items on amazon/ebay etc for $20-$30 or people on fb market place fighting each other in price until it's literally pointless to even make it for myself, much less to try and sell.
WOW, you DO build things! I'm kidding! That's probably how I initially found you. I also greatly appreciate your tool comparisons. I have bought more than one tool on your recommendations.
Great video Matt it’s great to see you build something again along with the tool reviews have got a lot of great deals from your deal alerts. Thanks as always for sharing.
Two cents worth. Clamp the short pieces to your workbench to where the edge is level with the bench top. Lay the long piece on top of the shorties and fasten. If you have a woodworking vice you can always use that. I always enjoy your message. Tim StC
I would love to see a video that shows me where I can buy wood plans for projects. I really want to build a music stand, but am not sure where to find a good set of plans. Love your content.
Great build video! I do think those racks look good. I took a quick Google search. Amazon has them for ~$20 in Pine, and another Etsy seller was selling 2 for ~$60. It's interesting to see the differences in price that are out there (Not counting Amazon). And great note you had about not under pricing yourself. Tough to know where to price yourself.

That was FREAKING hilarious!!!! 😅😅 I think we all are like that. I can build it BETTER and CHEAPER...........Eventually 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Might take me a week but us Woodworkers.....Man o Man.....We cannot STAND paying "Woodworkers" prices on things we KNOW we can do ourselves. It's almost a SIN to do so. And if we do buy something....We critique the ever living POOP out of it. This is crap, that's done wrong. Here's a blemish, there's a crack. This edge is loose. You just went from "Subscribed" (because I like your work and your style) to "With a bell" because you made me sit up and think "I can sell this shit too!" So thanks, and happy Sunday, and I'm itching to start doing and selling on Monday!
I would like to offer that it's okay to flip that cut if it helps to achieve a fit up. So maybe you ripped a board and match it again - sometimes it works great. Sometimes it flexes like crazy after the cut. Sometimes that opposing flex is a good thing once it's glued and fastened. Depends on what you're doing or trying to achieve!
11:23 Classic woman gets what's she wants move 😂 Half my projects start like this. And I only starting woodworking when my new saw arrives (beginning with attact closets, nothing fancy
Matt! Thanks for this. I'd like to see more of these projects. And where do you get your shirts? How about a link to the shirt seller in the descriptions? Keep up the good work and God bless you both.
Hi I was wondering if it’d be plausible to route the rounded edges of the 2x2 before construction to avoid having areas where the router cannot reach. Would this actually be possible? Or would it cause some edges not to be flush. Thanks
The other part about pricing is besides skills, the tools required to do such work. Yes the material is a few dollars and a few hours time so $195 seem excessive. But you need to take into account the tools required to make it if the consumer has none. On some of my turnings yes I have only $5 of material and a few hours of work in it. Why do I sell it for $100+. To make this you need a lathe, turning tools, turning accessories, etc. For a mere $1000.00 in tools later you can make your own and "save" that $100 cost. Your work is not typically marketed to other makers, but rather those that do not have the skills or tools to make the item that they need/want.
In addition, when you are selling, you need to pay a commission to the platform (Etsy), collect sales tax, and pay for shipping, account for possible returns. It all adds up, but may be not up to 200 bucks
You’re making a lot of people happy wanting build videos. Hope this gets a million views buddy. Can’t please everyone. You do you Matt and the right people will follow you. They’re not in your shoes. I have the best video idea ever and nobody is doing it. Wish I could talk to you.
Another thing that may cause us to under price our items is what seems to be too much competition to do otherwise. It happens to me. However, we need to keep in mind that while the competition may number in the thousands, populations can number in the millions and we live in an age when most everyone has access to the global market. You don't need, nor would you probably want, all of the business. You just need your niche.
I know you are a professional and can do these projects faster than we mere mortals, but how many hours did you have it those two pieces? I would assume if you can do it in 4, I need to allow myself 8 before I get frustrated and I will probably have it done in 6..
I did notice when you were trimming off the dowel, you were cutting it with the flush trim saw and it was cutting towards your other hand. I won't tell you how that could go wrong, because I am not the safety police. You already know the answer and why I brought it up.
Most woodworkers already have the tools. If you're starting out just think like this, the tools can be used over and over to make many different things.

Don't worry lol, I wear my wedding ring once while and I forget to take it off especially my necklace lol
When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at,change
Really great to see a build video, thanks.
I really like your build videos...and you did such a great job with this build and explaining it so well. The towel racks turned out great!
11:23 Classic woman gets what's she wants move 😂
Half my projects start like this. And I only starting woodworking when my new saw arrives (beginning with attact closets, nothing fancy
Thank You for showing and sharing this video and information… Question 🙋🏼♂️- Why use a bristle brush vs foam brush for poly coat??
I prefer the bristle brushes. Foam ones tend to catch on any rough wood more.
Matt! Thanks for this. I'd like to see more of these projects. And where do you get your shirts? How about a link to the shirt seller in the descriptions? Keep up the good work and God bless you both.
Thanks. I get most of the shirts from one of 3 places:
Kerusso.com
ShieldsofStrength.com
my own designs 731woodworks.com/store
@@731Woodworks Thank you.
Hi I was wondering if it’d be plausible to route the rounded edges of the 2x2 before construction to avoid having areas where the router cannot reach. Would this actually be possible? Or would it cause some edges not to be flush. Thanks
Awesome video! I also noticed that the end screen elements did not show up at the end of the video but it could just be me.
Good video. I love that iron sharpens iron shirt.
Thanks 👍
So what would be a good thing to build during the fall and winter
What program are you using to draw up projects before the build? Can you suggest someone that can draw up a King sized bed?
You should do a video on how to fold towels like that.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🔥 thank you
Beautiful job bud
Thanks 👍
You’re making a lot of people happy wanting build videos. Hope this gets a million views buddy. Can’t please everyone. You do you Matt and the right people will follow you. They’re not in your shoes. I have the best video idea ever and nobody is doing it. Wish I could talk to you.
Hey Barry, just go to my website and use the contact form. I get the email directly.
I have made these out of black walnut for a client, total of 4 racks $900. $80 in materials. They do sell.
Nice!
Thanks for stating the length of the 2 x 4, too many woodworking plans don't state the length
I know you are a professional and can do these projects faster than we mere mortals, but how many hours did you have it those two pieces? I would assume if you can do it in 4, I need to allow myself 8 before I get frustrated and I will probably have it done in 6..

Can you wear a watch when cutting?
I did notice when you were trimming off the dowel, you were cutting it with the flush trim saw and it was cutting towards your other hand. I won't tell you how that could go wrong, because I am not the safety police. You already know the answer and why I brought it up.
🙄
My daughter wants me to build something like that but for blankets
What did you use to attach them to the wall
Don't forget the cost for tools and knowledge! That's a lot more than just the wood.
Most woodworkers already have the tools. If you're starting out just think like this, the tools can be used over and over to make many different things.
Great video as always, Matt. It was good to see y'all again today. God bless you both!
Thanks! Great to see you too!
I was blown out of the water @ $195 ea! Thinking it over, if shipping is included... with that size, it might be close to ½ the selling price 🥴
Just use 50% shellac and 50% denatured alcohol to seal the wood, before staining
