New Year, New Pedalboard? [Mick Goes Back To ‘Basics’]

- Goodbye option paralysis, hello whole new can of worms
Welcome to the show - Mick here, hello! The top line of this show is me wanting to put together a more simple pedalboard, after years of relative complexity. We explain the reason for doing that in the intro section, but what then unfolds is a kind of pinball machine of thoughts and issues. For which I should apologise…
Having watched the show back prior to upload, it dawned on me that the sketchy general narrative and incessant technical terminology will be annoying and alienating to anyone who doesn’t know me and Dan very well. But… It is what it is, and it happened as it happened so this is undoubtedly a show for the TPS faithful.
In any case… I will do a mercifully short follow-up show in the next week or two to explain what happened next, and show the final choices along with a signal path diagram and all that. Watching the show back has cemented a few choices.
I also want to say that listening back, many of the tones in this show just had waaaaay too much gain and flub. It sounded massive and exciting in the room, but in hindsight the loss of articulation, definition and harmonic interest is pretty much the exact opposite of what I’m actually going for… especially with the new/old ES-345 which feels somewhat desecrated by all that mess. It really deserves better, and again, that helps cement a few choices.
Aaaaand, we also had a serious earth problem, hence all the buzz. We’re trying to track that down, but it does rather highlight the issues arising from just chucking a few pedals on a board with no switcher and expecting it all to play nice at 105dB! Not today old friend.
So with apologies for all the apologies, I’ll say a big thank you for sticking with it, and also to Dan for indulging me. Sometimes doing shows with no preparation ends up in an interesting journey with fun discoveries. Today it was a bit of a mess. Such is life, and we move on.
One final thank you. To Thorpy, Dan Coggins and Rob Francis for all being involved in me being able to acquire this AMAZING 1965 Gibson ES-345. Holy mama.
‘Enjoy’ the episode if you dare!

I think we can all agree the best thing about this vid is the fact our fearless leader Dan is good and well 💪

Very true!
I am very glad you're good Dan. I hope the analogue midi port was funny
Guys a bit late for New Year resolutions but please
1. No more apologies for long videos
2. No more worrying about tangents
3. No more apologies for the long talking sections
Cheers guys Loving every minute
They can apologize all they want, as long as they don't try to "correct" it! Listening to these two banter is just wonderful.
No need to apologise for taking time and enjoying the experiment Mick. It’s why we are all here.
Thank you.
Here, here!
I absolutely love episodes like this where D&M talk through building rigs. Not the physical building, but the pedals selection, interactions between guitar and amp, all the things. So much to learn and take away. Thank you Leg-Ends! 🙏🏻
Yeah and great playing!
Indeed, there’s always something new to learn bout the coupling of this and that in a creative way that you might not expect!❤
Wishing you continued health, Dan. Thank you for another great episode, gentlemen!
It's worth coming here just to read the comments. I feel reassured that there are actually lots of nice people in the world who look at things on the internet and find something enjoyable, comment on it constructively and make friendly polite remarks to the video creators.
Also thanks to Dan and Mick for sharing their huge knowledge around.
Thank you Robert. A few more people like you, and the world gets exponentially better, instantly. Thanks man.
don't be sorry, this entire video is THE exact reason I (and dare I say we) watch TPS.
Guys do not apologize for the long vids. You go through a lot with timestamps and labels to make it easy to skip through if your crazy. But watching you make those decisions helps us understand and hone in our our gear and taste even more. It's high quality stuff, thanks for all you do. Loved that 345.
Loved the final board
I came here to say the same thing! I love videos like this because it reminds me of things to look for as I’m building my rig, and t ones that may be great in the room, but would be problematic in a gig!
well said . ditto (looper)
I don't quite grasp what you were apologizing for. This show, as far as I comprehend it, is all about finding the right tone, experimenting with gear. At times, you explain things; sometimes, you show things. Occasionally, you delve into exploration, and we get to watch. And sometimes, we're just the fly on the wall while you're on that never-ending quest for that little extra. That is wonderful, that is, why i follow this channel. Thank you for your awesome work.
You know, I really don't care what you are doing, there are no two guitarists on UA-cam I want to watch more than you guys. Bless you, and never stop!
Hahahaa! Thank you!
Dan...whatever that thing was....im glad it's gone. To both you, Mick and the TPS team a very healthy and happy 2024. Cheers!
-Dorian
Dan, congrats, whatever you’ve been through, it must have been tough. ❤ Fellow BJJ practitioner and guitar nut.
Never apologise, that was superb. Love that guitar Mick, enjoy. 👍🏻
Please don't apologise for the longer videos or when you think you're rambling a bit. We love it. The more we get to see and hear you two nerd out and make glorious noise the better. Love you guys
🎸🎶"I had a thing..." Buh-ba-buh-dee-bump...🎶 "And now it's gone..." You guys are priceless.

Dan’s Blues
==========
I had a thing
Like lumpy bread
Bulging out
The side of my head
Went to the doc
To get checked out
He took a look
And had no doubt:
“You’ll be just fine…
’Cause we caught it in time.”
But I had to know:
“Will I slip into a coma?”
“No, not a chance”
“Will I dream of Tacoma?”
“No, just Impy Dance”
“Will I smell weird aromas?”
“Naw, Dan-relax… It’s just a lipoma”
I had a thing
And now it’s gone
I can Gig with my Rig
And carry on
Hanging with Mick
In Schwangri-la
Strumming on Red
We sing, la-di-dah
My fetish with hats
Is a thing of the past
Shaving my head
Is a trick that’ll last
I had a thing
And now it’s gone
I can Gig with my Rig
And carry on
Tone is the fuel for inspiration. We Tone Pilgrims will pass through many gates on our journey. May the inspiration I see on Mick and Dan's faces and, hear in their incredible playing, accompany us all on our journey. Great episode!
It feels likes ages since we've seen Dan without a hat! Happy new year to you two too. Awesome new pedalboard, as usual!
I was completely enthralled from start to finish. There is no need to keep apologising. This is the type of content we love.
Here, here! 🙌🏻
LOVE THOSE PEDALS!! TPS could use a Kossoff
@@wolvesandguitars defo! Love to hear it in the hands of those lads!
All the best for a full recovery, Dan!
345 wins! DAMN! Varitone actually lets you get some crazy cool tones 😎. Don’t get me wrong, that Strat is magic but, BLOODY HELL?
Glad to hear all is well, Dan. Happy New Year to you both!
Happy New Year guys, all the best for 2024! So good to have you back - another epsiode and another chunk of info for my sonic database! I've learned so much from you two, thanks for everything you continue to do.
Glad to hear you’re well, Dan. Thanks to both of you for the continuous outstanding content!
Thank you Dan & Mick for the ever inspiring content on TPS ! Looking forward to seeing what you get up to in this one. With Gratitude - John
Thanks for being here John!
What a great show! I have a sweet spot in my heart for 345s. The parallel inlays just looks beautiful. Great board! Great guitars! And get well Dan!
Happy New year, so pleased to see Dan all well. Mega tones as always, and thank you for bringing me into the 21st century of guitar 👍
Happy New Year!!! Glad I took the journey with you on this one. New Year, new board, new sounds! Get it!!!
Love that 345 omg .. and the Jam delay is stunning!!
Good health to you both.
A fantastic episode guys! I must say, at the end, that was the most beautiful I have heard Dan play! Best of health to you, Sir, and bring on that jazz album!!!
always a pleasure to hear you both play.................and play. Good health and great tone to everyone in 2024.
Cheers chaps, always happy to have some nerdy tone-hounding. Dan's expensive chords at the end were flipping fabulous.
No need to apologize, Mick! That was a glorious episode. It's super cool to get to watch you guys put together your personal boards! ❤
Great show guys, love the in depth look at how the pedals interact with one another and particually loved Dan's playing at the end - magical stuff.
Happy New Year to you both! Dan, whatever you had, I'm happy to hear that it's now gone.
This is the exact detail that I enjoy… amazing tone guys! Thanks
Great episode.......no apologies needed.......thank you both for all that you do for us !
That 345 pulled something beautiful out of you both. Thoroughly enjoyable episode chaps. Good health to Dan.
Over the years I've learned so much from this show. Including an understanding of why I love the sounds I love, where to find them, and how to continually expand that into new sonic territories. Because tone.
Dan, great that everything is well now! Mick, I just love the way your playing lightened up more and more as the sound was there with the desitions on pedals. And the new quitar, it light up the playing for the both of you, best thing that can happen and it really excited me as well while sound was just something else. Please don't apologize for the longevity of the video, I think this was the most captivating one in a while. Positively saying, the enthusiasm that grew and grew was the main point in this video that made it really great. Representation of the pedal and sound hunting feeling that we all share❤
Great episode! Great minds think alike. I consolidated my pedalboard based on our current set list. And lo and behold 5 pedals is all I need. My gigs are all in mono so that helped with my decision making. Dan stay well and cheers for an awesome recovery.
Had to put the headphones on as soon as i heard the first few notes. Probably one of the best sounds you've gotten out of that strat!
More episides like this! Loved it! Getting down and dirty selecting gear is what we all relate to and seeing and listening to the discussion was the perfect show
Greetings from Finland! Thanks for the show and above all, all the best both of you gentlemen!
No need to apologise, these are the ones we learn the most from, am in the middle of rebuilding a board so hearing you talk through the decision process and options as you consider them is invaluable. Strong start to 2024!
One of the most memorable episodes!! Really loved it! Dan, all the best!!!
Happy new year guys!
I like long videos, because the weekly episode is my "Dad hour" in my cave. Don't mind at all if it's two hours!
Hugs to you, Dan and best wishes to a complete and speedy recovery!
Love you gents! So very happy to be back in the TPS groove! A Very lovely and belated HNY Mick, Dan and team!
Congrats on the awesome new axe Mick - sounds fab, obviously! Love the simpler pedal set-up too
Glad to hear that Dan is longer in possession of " the thing " . Let's look forward to the continuing of that trend. Happy New Year and good health to you both .
I actually enjoyed this journey of exploration. Thanks guys!!
Happy New Year Mick & Dan.
Great so see you both on this beautiful cold Friday morning here in California.
Looking forward to this show.

How good are you guys?!! Bloody brilliant!! All the love and appreciation your way. Thank you for making my day everyday. Big love from Mullumbimby in OZ 🎉
Really enjoyed this episode … learnt a lot seeing Dan and Mick’s thought process … this is why we love TPS … always asking better questions !
Great video guys, the pain of board downsizing is real!👍😂 Glad to see you are ok Dan! Loving the 345 Mick, looking forward to a future video on it!👍
Looking forward to this one 🎉
Have spent the last few months trying to do similar.
A huge thank you to Dan, Mick, and the entire That Pedal Show Team! Since becoming a TPS fan, every day is filled with inspiration fueled by the awesome content and community you guys have built!!!🤘
The neck pickup tone on the 345 😮 🔥🔥
Happy new years to you too guys ! 🙂
Happy new year pedal nerds!
Loved your channel since the start! Thanx again for everything.
T-shirt idea:To wah or not to wah, that is the question.
Currently playing with my new effectrode mercury fuzz…, holy moly!
Fellas fellas, we're here to watch and listen to you talk just as much as play! Your insights are always welcome- wishing good health for Dan!
Thoroughly enjoyed this one lads! What sounds there at the end with the new Gibson mate, just gorgeous.. Congrats on the new guitar Mick and the simplifying is inspiring. Thanks again for the wonderful and informative content. Love you both
Thank you Mark!
Happy new year TPS and all followers. Dan 👊
Always reliable, relevant content to enjoy and create thoughts and opinions.
Happy new year - Peace and Love !!!!!
A couple of months ago, I stripped right back to amplifier and guitar. The back to basics thing works. It allows a reset, and a reevaluation. A simple board makes sense, especially for a gig, but even for home practice. Focus on the playing, not on buttons and knobs. Love it. Also, that 345 is a thing of beauty. Well done.
Some GREAT lick-age in this episode! Here’s hopin’ you’re back out playing live again soon. ✌️Always look forward to Fridays here in Nashville when you appear here from across the pond.
So great seeing TPS again...I owe a great deal of gratitude to you both. Mick and Dan....
I started watching a year before you moved the second time..Ive learned so much..and I thank you
Ps: Dan so glad you are on the mend
Love and prayers for you both moving forward 2024...🎉🙏🎸
Dang. Strong start to the year! Great episode!
Very grateful for what you guys do
Happy to hear that you're recovering well, Dan
Im here for the indulgence!!! About to rewatch
Love this episode, really cool to see the thought process and simplifying. I’m a big fan of a good simple setup and while I sometimes let things get out of hand and go bigger, it’s never long before I downsize again. Fuzz, couple overdrives, delay and modulation can usually get it done.
@That Pedal Show - Really enjoyed the gamut of sounds Mick’s board produced in this video. But, I was very pleased to hear Mick using Licks from Bill Wither’s Grandma’s Hands. One of my favorite tunes by him.
No need to apologize to anyone, thanks for allowing all of us to follow along on this journey with you 🙏🏻❤️
Very coooooooool, nerdy video. I love it when you guys get WAY down into the tone weeds. You definitely ended up in a very cool place!
Brilliant. This felt like a classic TPS episode. Of the many possible comments, here are two. First, I was looking away when the Delay Llama came on and my head literally snapped back to the screen. What's that?! Second, which wasn't the point of the episode at all, was that when the 345 came out, both of you allowed yourselves to swim in it. It wasn't comparing micro-tweaks to a pedal's EQ or something. It was yielding to the inspiration of that (yes, new) guitar. You both allowed the inspiration to take the reins. So whatever the source, a new guitar, pedal, amp or combination, your playing was inspired and inspiring. Cheers, guys.
Wishing you the best fellas, love your work. Your show is brilliant, a rare find in this modern era of UA-cam.
Thank you kindly!
Great show! I really comming into the same direction... Simplify! It is really a great "know yourself" exercise! Congratulations!
I loved this back to basics episode ❤
Gotta be honest, its been beautiful seeing this journey unfold for you Mick over the years. Its a living document of a tone/music/artist journey and proves its worth the fuss haha At least in my opinion, youve landed on some truly special tools to open up your voice as a player
Thank you Justin! You gotta go there to come back I think. :0)
I really enjoyed hearing Mick play the intro!
Glad you’re good, Dan ❤ That juggler sounds dope!
This was a great show. I'm working on building a pedal board and it's tough to make decisions about which pedals are useful to me. Thank you
Dan, may you continue to heal. I had a thing removed from my head too. My dad had the same. He called them potatoes. ( we were farmers) All the best
Great one, you guys... very inspiring to watch, actually... No need to worry about running long, as everyone who follows the channel knows the dilemma of wanting to cut down to the essential few versatile, perfect sounding pedals knowing that it means killing some darlings... but the way that 808 complements the Juggler, ...man...!! Oh, and congrats on the ES345 - truly magnificent!!
This pedalboard has so much character, love it. It sounds like you.
I loved this video, would love to see a series like this, like the best simple cheap baords, then mid priced board’s etc but in depth like this that be so cool
Mic has such great touch and amazing tone.
I appreciate the direction you're going here. I just recently put my giant pedal board that resembles the console of the Starship enterprise on the back burner for now and have gone to a smaller board with a dual drive, boost, one wobble pedal, one delay and a whammy ricochet and find that I'm making more music rather than just sitting and twiddling with knobs
Very interesting. I remember a few years back Mick did a vlog (during isolating, I think) about "how much gear do I need?" This feels a bit like that mentality of "how do I do the most with the least stuff" :) Great show as usual!
Great video as usual! Sometime it would be great to experiment with hearing how things fit in a mix when we are working with tones (i.e. playing to a track ).
Thanks for your inspiring work!
Wishing you both all the best in 2024 and to Dan a full & speedy recovery brother. oNe LovE from NYC
The new 345 looks and sounds fantastic, Mick. Can’t wait for the video about it. Would love to see a comparison between it and your 58’ reissue 335.
All the best to you both, glad Dan is on the mend!
i watch this as i have literally just returned from hospital as i also had a thing, which is now gone. best wishes to you, dan. and of course, mick, simon and frazer!
Watching you two noodle is like a free guitar lesson, awesome! Would be nice to see some Strymon stuff on the boards other than reviews. I have 7 of them on my huge board, guess I am biased and chasing the ultimate sounds as we all are. Excellent show as always!
Thx for the basics and thx for the high gain stuff, excellent!
I was 7 minutes into this video and already so pumped. I’ve been missing, a bit, the thoughts and musings of Mick and Dan as you nerd out on pedals, but more importantly, how you’re thinking about them working together in a rig. It was Friday. It was a long week, and this is exactly what I needed. Happy 2024. Looking forward to all the TPS it brings.
Cheers Hugh! Hope you’re well dood!
That sixties strat is the star of the show.
Looking forward to this one, ive been downsizing my own pedalboard recently and trying to see what i can get out of just s few pedals and my guitar's controls but the feeling of needing another fuzz or drive on the board is hard to ignore 😂
One of the best videos. I'm happy to watch to the end, I actually prefer longer videos, more playing, more talking, more more. Everything in life is so speedy, I like sitting on the sofa for an hour of guitar tone at its best.
@thatpedalshow that 345 really brought something profoundly beautiful out of you both! What a sweet, articulate and balanced sounding guitar ❤ keep it up lads
No aplologies for the lenght I LOVE this sort of videos. I feel like I'm hanging out with you guys!
+1 for the Tube Driver! Love that pedal.
I just went through the exact same process to build my 2024 rig. Love the long-form, nitty gritty detail stuff.
