ModelU very kindly sent me some figures to paint up and add to the layout. Having used their loco lamps for years, I knew these would be good but they still surpassed my expectations!

Fantastic figurines and you did a great paint job. I like to change scenes and also do stop motion scenes so I use transparent plastic to glue my figurines on, but glueing them directly to the layout is of course a more realistic effect.

@@MouldyRaspberry If you would consider stop motion: it's a very pleasant addition to train videos, but it takes steady hands 😁 mine are sometimes a bit to shaky, causing a scene to be re-recorded. But it's very satisfying to have that extra life in a video. I use a compact camera with stopmotion function, but there are alternatively also smartphone apps available.

It really is guess work as to what colours of clothing they wore in the days of steam. There seemed to be well faded blue and charcoal colour and they wore a cap known as a "grease top" because it was shiny. It's very difficult to find good colour photos from the steam era. I have two books both from the western region with every photo in colour from the 50's to the end of steam on the western in 1965. On photo taken at Challow with the fireman on a 47xx and he's wearing a white shirt with a west coat over it. His sleeves are rolled up.
Signalmen didn't seem to have a uniform for from one of the books is a shot inside Reading West signal box in 1963 and they're wearing casual clothing of the time.
Preservation crews aren't good for they often wear safety day glow orange which doesn't suit the 50's and 60's.
Those Model U figures are very good Lewis with loads of detail and you did a great job in bringing them to life. Aren't you a lucky boy that they sent them to you. Roy.

Those figures are really excellent, way better than the Preiser ones. To paint them though I prefer using the Vallejo model color acrylics or the Ammo by MiG figure paints (also acrylics) and using a wet palette to keep my paints fresh and fine marder sable brushes for detailing. (I'm an avid historic figure painter - mostly WW2 and Napoleonic Wars - which explains my experience with painting OO and HO figures as well as 1/35 scale or even bigger 1/16 scale ones). Also Ammo by MiG releases now acrylics for model railways, even for British trains, and for buildings and figure painting. Those are quite good, like the Vallejo ones , and both mix well together.

A signalbox needs a Signalman. The one on the bottom step looks like he might be a relief-man, for a shift-change or something. All steamies need a footplate crew. Other than that, Misselthwaite is already looking attractive. What would you say was your best trait?
