This man is an amazing human being. Not only is he responsible for decades of amazing music, but he also has a big heart. Im 44 and not particularly into model railways, more into music, but would love to shake his hand. All the best, Pete, Wes, Solihull.
What a great interview. I never knew a chat about model trains could be so heartwarming. So much more respect for Pete and his club for what they do for younger generations.
I couldn’t agree with Pete more. I bought my son a great western Pullman years ago at great expense and he only used it a few times and it sat in my cupboard for over ten years. I suffer from depression so I got it out the box and started to mess about with it…it diverted my mind from the imbalance in my brain. I’m glad Pete bought it up. Thank you sir
Have to say it Dawn, you produce videos that enrich, entice and enlighten the soul. I genuinely mean that you are where you need to be, insomuch as, you enable us to enact our dreams. Speaking to Pete, probably the hobby's most ardent and well known ambassador, you've unlocked and enable us to unlock, our untapped talent. I honestly don't know how you can improve on this now. I'm so thrilled and proud to be a small part of this wonderful community. Thank you for showing us the way our very own first lady of model railways.
Aaron - you are so so kind. I'm very humbled by your comments. Great use of word - ardent - that's exactly the perfect word to describe Pete's passion for the hobby (and I have 'borrowed' it on my other social media accounts - thank you!) Thanks for being such a fantastic supporter of the channel. Hope to see you this evening?
Lovely interview. Particularly like Pete’s comfort blanket analagy which is so true. Your model railway is your world that at any age you can lose yourself in and for a while forget your problems!
Pete's really got it with the next generation and people with special needs that he's transforming. Pete's brought into the open what was happening in some clubs, where people were been helped and transformed by the hobby.
I have know Pete for many years, mainly from when his company used to maintain our locos for us, good and down to earth no airs and graces. He would sometimes come into our offices in Euston just for a chat, one evening i was working late when Pete showed up, and asked if i had five minutes for a chat whilst he was on route to his studios... he just wanted to talk about bogies, which we did, several hours later, i asked, i thought you were going to the studios? Pete just said, i would rather be here talking about bogies/// fair play.
This is an excellent interview Dawn. You really brought out his passion for the hobby, forward looking attitude and humanity. While he was with us he spent time with one of our new, young members and gave him great advice and genuine encouragement. A little sprinkling of “star dust”that will endure. I am looking forward to seeing his skyscrapers! Thank you too for bringing “Brief Encounter”.
Thanks Pete - it was a pleasure to be there and thank you for looking after us. Pete is incredibly inspiring isn't he - and lovely that he got to spend time and dispense wisdom to your younger members. Our video of your show will be out soon!
Really enjoyed this. A few zillion quid better off but his heart is in the right place. I would love to spend a couple of hours with him and a pint talking trains. Well done to Questy for sorting this.
Super interview Dawn, well done for getting such a relaxed chat with Pete. How smashing he clearly loves seeing kids & adults being themselves and being super excited about trains, regardless of whether they fit into societies "norms". Comes across as a lovely chap. Rock on Pete!
"Am I on the spectrum?". Everyone is, to some extent. Don't worry about labelling yourself, you like what you like and you should embrace it rather than be embarrassed about it. Love Pete's straightforward honesty, enthusiasm and willingness to share.
Congratulations Dawn - what a great interview. My surname-namesake has a fantastic view of life lived his way! Along with Rod Stewart, Jools Holland and a few others in the music industry, they make the public take notice - and take seriously - the model railway hobby.
Thank you Shane - it's great to see more high profile people share their love of model railways. I think Pete might have been the first to "break cover" though :-)
Lovely interview with a real hero of mine. Will have to visit his next creation to take inspiration from it. Love the story about helping the kids. Keep it up Pete.
Great interview with a great railway modeller. Pete is right about it being a comfort blanket, has helped me get through a few tough times as it promotes positive thoughts. Good to hear he's getting kids involved in the hobby as they are it's future really. And well done to Grumpy for getting the steam trains and boats in the background.
I like the live steam models that we can see in the background, and the RC boats. This is the type of interview about the hobby, that we should have more of. Not the silly ones that sadly we seem to have too many of.
Thank you Mike - that's lovely feedback. And yes, the live steam models were fantastic - O and G gauge, and I'll be including them in my highlights video.
Great interview, it was very nice to here from you with Peter Waterman. Good back seen with the boats and steam trains. Your camera man got the right shots.
Thank you Dawn for such a great chat with Pete. I agree with most of what he says. I am only 4 years younger than him and was a teenage member of a model railway club in the 1960's.
Thanks Simon - I think that was a surprise for most people. Tom from @buggleskelly says that painting resin protects it though so it shoudn't turn to dust.... a point for discussion on Wednesday?
Lovely interview Dawn, it was lovely to hear the passion that Pete has about involving kids in the hobby and what it has given him over the years. There is nothing as uplifting as sitting in front of a couple of pieces of wood or plastic and a couple of hours later you have created something fantastic listening to trains running round a track, ❤
Thanks Maura - I could have sat and chatted with him for ages, sadly he had an official club house opening to take care of! I agree... his passion for the hobby and respect for young people is incredibly inspiring.
What a terrific interview. Certainly puts a whole new perspective on the hobby. Perhaps the definition of model railways should be “escapism”. Escape the riggers of everyday life and enter your own world in miniature. Excellent…
Nice little interview, as to kids and children coming into the hobby, our club, albeit a generic model group we welcome all ages, but they do have to be accompanied by an adult. As to the Australian government scheme, I feel a petition is needed for something similar here!
Nice interview Dawn. Interesting to hear his thoughts on resin printing. Resin is like any other plastic so will not last for ever, but usually only gets affected by the sun if it's unprotected. Any paint cover will make it last for years.
Great interview with the man who brought Bananarama and Rick Astley to the world! He probably has much more fun with his O-scale Leamington Spa empire than all the Ferraris he used to own!😊
I have to agree that you get kids into a hobby at 5, 6 years old. This is the problem, Spot on about mental health issues. Hobby is expensive, ridiculously expensive. Mainly on Wagons and coaches rather than engines. You only need a few engines, you need 25 Wagons and 7 coaches I've got back into the hobby to help with mental health. I don't think I'd go to a club meet though.
One of the many model railway problems is that many of the "modellers" are quite moody and not easy to chat too. This applies to many full scale rail enthusiasts too. Also, too many purists, obsessed with specific eras or counting rivets or the wrong location of that handrail. It's good to know what you're doing but essentially it's expensive toys on a table. It should be fun and a lot of model railway enthusiasts don't like that. Another problem it has is that many folks enjoy it because they might have introverted lives. Many rail fans don't have confidence to socialise, that's why Pete is wrong, model railways can be a socially active hobby but most folks play alone in their attic with maybe one or two trusted friends. I like Pete but his perspective is altered by his confidence and financial security.
Model railways are the perfect hobby for that - a hobby we can do alone, but there are clubs and shows if we want to be social. I agree about the fun element - we don't take ourselves too seriously. Have you joined one of our livestreams yet? The Wednesday Express (Not Stopping at Peterborough) - 7:30pm every Wednesday. We do have a lot of fun. Thank you for watching.
hi pete re pendon you said you could build that in an hour BUT dont you think that you are taking the pleasure and mental reward by 3d /lazer printing..
That was my question to him... I guess, we use tech to make the stuff we don't like doing, so we can use the extra time to focus on the bits we love doing.
This man is an amazing human being. Not only is he responsible for decades of amazing music, but he also has a big heart. Im 44 and not particularly into model railways, more into music, but would love to shake his hand. All the best, Pete, Wes, Solihull.
Excellent video. I really enjoyed listening to the enthusiasm of Pete Waterman, it’s contagious.
What a lovely view of life. Kids can be kids and let them be so. This is a high quality interview, not just two model train people chatting.
Really pleased you enjoyed it - a truly fascinating man and very kind and generous with his time.
Great interview - good questions and good insight.
What a great interview. I never knew a chat about model trains could be so heartwarming. So much more respect for Pete and his club for what they do for younger generations.
A lovely man and yes - huge respect for him.
Fantastic interview. Pete is so honest and genuine. A lovely man who has , and will , inspire positive attitude in people for generations.
Agreed!

@@modelrailwayquest I wouldn't miss it for the world! It's a firm fixture in my permanent diary now.

I wholeheartedly agree!
Pete's really got it with the next generation and people with special needs that he's transforming.

It's changed my perception of him. I always thought he was a total ....
Excellent interview Dawn. As for Pete, that is a true passion for the hobby enthusiasts, particularly encouraging for children.
Indeed - he is truly inspiring!
Really enjoyed this. A few zillion quid better off but his heart is in the right place. I would love to spend a couple of hours with him and a pint talking trains. Well done to Questy for sorting this.
I was incredibly privileged to have some time chatting with him - could have listened for hours.

National treasure is used to often but hear is a national treasure
You used it too often
Great Interview ❤
Thank you!

This is fantastic! Thank you both for these humane insights.
Thank you Freddy!

And well done to Grumpy for getting the steam trains and boats in the background.
Thank you - and yes, I loved that comment. He was very open and honest - which made for a great conversation.
Most enjoyable and revealing interview!
Thank you
A superb interview. Pete is and remains a great ambassador for the hobby.
He is!

Pete Waterman, a true model railway legend we need more like him Best Regards Andrew from Downunder
Thanks Andrew! I agree!
Great interview, it was very nice to here from you with Peter Waterman.
Good back seen with the boats and steam trains. Your camera man got the right shots.
Thank you - glad you liked it, and yes, the boats and swallows were very relaxing.

Thanks Trevor - glad you liked it!
That was a fantastic interview and honestly didn't knew 3D printing items can turn into powder.
Thanks Simon - I think that was a surprise for most people. Tom from @buggleskelly says that painting resin protects it though so it shoudn't turn to dust.... a point for discussion on Wednesday?
